Don’t let fear stop you!

What reactions do people have when you ask them for their portrait? How to conquer arising fear when talking to strangers?

Getting Started with the 100 Strangers Challenge project is often easier said than done. One of my first thoughts and fears were based on the reaction what people will have.

I wrote a post on an other site on how to manage fear and prevent it from doing the things that we really want to do. You can read it here: What if Fear Wasn’t holding you back

Back to the topic. I remember clearly when I told myself that I was going to pull through with this challenge:

“This sounds like an awesome project. I want to make great portraits and meet a lot of new people. “

It is the same with a lot of activities that make you step out of the boundaries of your comfort zone, a lot of reasons started to pop up in my head and try to stop me from doing this project.

“Nah, don’t do it. People sometimes have strange reactions”.

the truth is:

Fear is excitement without oxygen. Breathe acknowledge fear and make it an exciting day.

People will run away in terror.

Since I managed to overcome various fear I had, I thought I should try to give people who also want to do this challenge a small insight in the different types of reactions that I have experienced.

First I want to show you how I believed my subjects would react, and then I want to you how most encounters actually went.

False Expectations:

I believed…

…People wouldn’t even look at me and continue walking.

… People wouldn’t believe that I was actually doing it for a project. I might be a spy

… I would get strange looks.

…people would grab their belongings and run for it.

Reality:

After having photographed quite a number of subjects I came to the following conclusion. It is amazing. People are amazing. Most, well nearly all of my negative expectations weren’t fulfilled to my relief. At least no one ran away in terror.

At some points I was literally surprised at people’s reactions in a positive way of course.

In summary the reactions from the people I asked where the following:

Happy, smiling, and curious about my project and/or my camera.
In a hurry but still willing to pose with a smile. Some even stayed longer to chat
Sceptic about what I will do with the photos.
A few aren’t very self-confident but still accept
A few who aren’t very self-confident don’t accept.
A very little portion will not be happy at my request.

From all the people who I have asked no one ignored me or kept on walking. Nearly every single individual was polite when they declined their offer, many even said sorry. No one ran away or was angry at my request.

A few facts:

I have a 70% success rate from the people I have asked. This is much more than I could have imagined at the beginning of the project.
My longest streak to date is 9 Portrait in one day. A streak is the amount of people you ask who are willing subjects.
Smokers normally decline my offer 90% of the time.
Have a great day and don’t let fear hold you back from being outstanding.
