That’s right! Keg art! Pacifico had a great idea to go to some major cities across the USA to promote and party and make some art in what they call “Adventures on Tap”. Starting in Pheonix, AZ, they stop in each city for a couple days to tour around with an artist to get a feel of the locale and then commemorate that trip on the side of a Keg. I can’t wait to see what the final results are, as the current kegs are looking great. This is a wonderful example of a company promoting art while still marketing themselves in a unique and creative manner. Hopefully, more companies will take notice and we will see a rise in art done NOT for a company, but because of it. Take a look at some of the great results and artists:

Josh Keyes, an American Contemporary artist, works on art that reminds me of a scientific diagram in a post-apocalyptic world. The surrealism that he displays creates some great, stunning and creative works. It has symbolism, it has archaeological context and it has animals doing some crazy cool stuff.

As always, I find that the greatest images to look at are those that give an idea of the process. A look at the studio during one of Keyes’ recent shows, gives you an idea of the process that he uses. A simple, yet well-worked sketch on the wall shows that the idea is well worked out and that it really could stand on it’s own, but the artist has different ideas on size and structure. It’s something I could always learn!

If you’re like me, you enjoy reading, and being around books, but you’ve always thought one thing could make it better: booze. Well, my friends, we are both in luck because the idea of combining literature and libations is a reality! In all areas of the world, bars are opening up for books to be read. The three I show below (Hemingway’s in L.A., The Library Bar in L.A., and The Beijing Bookworm in Beijing) are just a small sample, but show the elegance of this idea. There is something comfortable and communal about this that really resonates with me. Part of my problem with the library (besides the smell and the laminated book covers) is that they are deathly silent and seem more of a nap zone than a reading zone. Now that the idea has wormed (pun) it’s way into my head, I definitely know what I want to open up in the next few years, so be sure and stop by when I do, all right? If anyone has any other bars they know of that are like this, please comment.

Post Its are the site of notes, of grocery lists, and of reminders. The worlds they portray are usually those of work life. Very seldom do they transcend their industrial settings. Yet in the hands of Don Kenn they are transformed into tiny windows into worlds of monsters who prey on children who carry balloons and appear to be generally unaware as to their surroundings.

Kenn creates worlds of monsters and children on yellow post-it notes that Kenn describes as “a little window into a different world, made on office supplies.” The whimsy, and personality of these monsters is reminiscent of “Where the Wild Things Are” or the images of a Shel Silverstein poem. It is great how these images invoke feelings, especially in their small, compact style. The detail is amazing, as is the variations between each of these Post Its. What is really telling, is the talent of Kenn, who can use something so confining to create something so expansive. There is a world that invades around the outside of the Post It that you can’t see, yet you know it is there, just waiting for it to be discovered!

Minimalism is something I can’t do all that great. I always try, but it becomes way more detailed than it needs to be. But that is the great thing about people who are good at minimalist art: they know how to take something we all know, and give it back to us with enough information to deduce what it is (although just barely). It is all about how we view the world, and how we can understand what we see visually. So of course I was floored when I came across the Minimalist Muppet work of Eric Slager. It takes something so nice and retro and part of my childhood and gives it a symbol. So I take it as a good sign that I can name most of these characters. Or a bad sign because I spent too much time watching TV as a kid. Either way, this is going up as my computer background.

I was never the greatest at Art History. That is to say, I’m terrible at names, dates and places (which is really all you get tested on in Art History…sadly). Yet some things always stuck with me; the emotional spaces of Rothko, the expression of Pollock, the pop of Lichtenstein. And the idea that some greats had during the early 20th century (including Van Gogh) that the art of children is the purest form of art. I never quite understood it, but thanks to the great people over at WHATtheCOOL, I have been shown the light.

The idea was that the naive painting of children’s art can be used to understand the nature of creativity. To be creative meant to return to a primordial nature — the implicit goal was to be as creative as nature. It meant the recovery of primordial human nature from its social structure, which is what children’s art was thought to accomplish, as children do not have ideas of what society determines to be right and wrong. Here is where Korean artist Yeondoo Jung would agree, and he takes it a step further.

In 2005, Jung looked at over 1000 pieces of art done by Korean students and children, and then tried to recreate those that he found to be interesting (and doable) in photography. The result is stunning. I think it really gives inspiration to anyone who looks at it, and shows that the spark of genius doesn’t have to be thought of as static and set. These kids all have a great sense of creativity, even if their work is overlooked. Maybe it will take someone like Jung to call attention to it, and (perhaps) to get us all to try to take a mental step backward and create those artistic pieces we seem to have lost when we “grew up”. Here’s to staying young!

The work of Gregory Thielker is amazing on many levels. It is the use of color and light that draws the viewer into it. It is the compositional wackiness of looking at a scene through a windshield. And most of all, it’s the fact that the piece is a photo-realistic painting. It’s amazing that anyone could create something so realistic and natural looking, especially when skewed by the windshield water, which Thielker describes as creating “a shifting lens for the way we see the environment: it both highlights and obscures our viewing. Perspectives slip and compress, while shapes and colors merge into one another.”

What some of you may know is that I have always loved photo-realistic paintings, especially those of Chuck Close (although those done by him in his later life are even more stunning to me), so it comes as no surprise that this artwork came across my eye. I have great trouble creating anything remotely resembling something “realistic”, so it may just be that I have an admiration for what I can’t do. Whatever it is, take a look at some of this work!

The works of Van Gogh are vivid and unique when altered with the tilt-shift camera effect that has recently begun popular.Artcyclopedia took some known and unknown work of Vincent Van Gogh and, using the techniques used for faking tilt-shift, turn them into something completely different and interesting. It’s incredible, especially since they say that the effect is completely done through effects: no changes to dimensions or alterations to the picture were used, “the effect is achieved simply by manipulating the light in the scene and adjusting the areas of the image that are more and less in focus, as you will see.” Check out this amazing work, which I, for some reason, imagine is done to some great piano music.
