Traumatic causes can be further divided into macrotrauma or microtrauma. An example of macrotrauma is an injury to the joint such as a bone break causing the bones to line up improperly (misalignment), lose stability, or damage cartilage. Microtrauma may occur over time (chronically). An example of this would be repetitive movements like carpal tunnel.

Another common actor to developing OA is being overweight. Studies have shown time and time again that overweight people tend to have a higher affinity for developing OA. This happens because of the excess force that the joints are required to hold.

Other factors are:

Endocrine is another predisposing factor. People with diabetes may be more prone to osteoarthritis. Other less common endocrine problems also may promote development, including acromegaly, hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, and obesity.

Inflammatory joint diseases like infected joints, chronic gouty arthritis, and rheumatoid disease can also predispose a person to osteoarthritis.

Congenital, developmental, genetic can also cause a predisposition to osteoarthritis like abnormal anatomy such as unequal leg length or genetic defect may promote breakdown of the protective architecture of cartilage.

What happens in OA?

As you age, have a major trauma, repetitive micro trauma (wear and tear), genetic predisposition, and metabolic disease can lead to a break down in cartilage.

In each joint you have synovial fluid, cartilage then bone (this is a simplification). So if you have repetitive trauma it wears on the synovial fluid and after time the synovial fluid begins to lose viscosity. When the synovial fluid loses viscosity then additional stress is put on the cartilage. The cartilage begins breaking down and ultimately leads to cartilage calcification and potentially bone on bone grinding.

So what can I do about it?

Chondroitin sulfate consists of repeating chains of molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). This provides the structure in the synovial fluid by holding both water and nutrients in the synovial fluid. This is extremely important since cartilage areas have little or no blood supply.

Studies have been performed on supplementing with oral chondroitin sulfate and have consistently reduced pain, increased joint mobility, and healing within joints (shown on x-ray).

1) Omega 3 oils are a huge topic and widely debated. In my office I recommend fish oil over flax oil because fish oil contains both DHA and EPA. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) both have anti-inflammatory effects ultimately leading to a reduction in pain. Flax oil contains ALA which can ultimately can be converted into ALA but the body has to go through many chemical processes to manufacture EPA and DHA. In order for this process to work a patient must have a functioning thyroid.

What to look for when you buy a fish oil. A high grade fish oil will be pharmaceutical grade or molecularly distilled which removes chemicals, PCBs, and mercury.

To help prevent joint damage, is it important to exercise?

2) Exercise is important because diabetes and obesity are rising quickly in this country and are risk factors for OA. It is important to do some form of exercise increasing mileage 10 percent each week. This increases muscle strength which ultimately increases bone strength. Studies have shown the more muscle mass you obtain has a direct correlation with a decrease in insulin levels. This decrease the risk of diabetes. It is important to perform exercise with the correct biomechanics and have all of the bones moving how they were designed to move.

3) Get Chiropractic care to increase the mobility of your joints and stop the process of degeneration. It is important that all of the bones and joints in your body are moving. Chiropractic is very effective in decreasing the side effects of an already present disease process of arthritis and also preventing osteoarthritis all together.

Am I at Risk?
Are you over 45 years old?
Have you had injury to 1 or more joints?
Are you stressed?
Does Osteoarthritis run in your family?
Do you experience muscle weakness
Do you exercise regularly?
Do you stretch?
Are you overweight or obesity?
Do you have pain during or after movement?
Do you feel tenderness when you apply light pressure to an area?
Do you get joint stiffness when you wake up in the morning or after a period of inactivity?
Do you have a loss of flexibility? Do you notice you can't put a joint through its full range of motion?
Do you hear or feel a grating sensation when you use the joint?

Find out simple tips to prevent or manage arthritis at my Longmont Chiropractic web site at http://www.altfammed.com/.

View the original article here

Market Ready for New Knee Arthritis Treatment: APOS Device Gets Funding

APOS Medical and Sports Technology Ltd., an Israeli company, recently announced that it has raised $8 million in venture capital funding for further development and marketing of its unique device designed for osteoarthritis treatment for knee pain sufferers. Pitango Venture Capital, a large VC firm also located in Israel, made the investment. The VC firm has a history of investing in successful technology companies, with over 120 investments since 1993.

The APOS device is designed to treat knee osteoarthritis by creating multi-directional instability. The device looks like a shoe with two half balls glued to the sole. APOS is an acronym for "All Phases of Step Cycle" and was developed by Dr. Avi Elbaz and Dr. Amit Mor in Israel. Development of the device has been underway for over 10 years.

The APOS device, which contains the semispherical balls, is attached to a patient's shoes. The platform's balls create an unstable gait, mimicking natural walking on uneven surfaces. While seemingly odd, the instability both relieves pain and strengthens a person's muscles. Patients use the APOS device for 30 to 60 minutes each day. As the patient uses the device, the instability forces the patient's body to a proper alignment, reducing pain. Also, the person's muscles are retrained, creating improved motion and increased function. The treatment is administered by specially trained physiotherapists, and includes computerized gait analysis.

Clinical trials have shown that the device improves the patient's posture and walk, and relieves knee and other leg joint pain. The system was designed around the concept of functional rehabilitation. The APOS device simulates real life conditions, where many current techniques teach a patient to stand in a clinic. APOS' designers attempted to simulate the way mammals rehab in nature.

APOS has conducted trials that have shown the platform can

* reduce the intensity of knee pain by 66% after eight weeks

* eliminate most lower back pain in 70% of patients

* enhance patient's quality of life by significantly improving joint function

Drs. Elbaz and Mor have seen over twenty thousand patients to date with the APOS device. Half of the treatments were conducted in Israel Additionally, in 2009, the company jointly conducted a commercial trial in the United Kingdom with Bupa, Britain's largest private health insurance company. As a result of the trial, the companies formed APOSTherapy, which is now a stand alone entity that is a member of the Association of British Healthcare Industries.

Dr. Mor, APOS' CEO says, "The product has several applications. It can be used for stabilization, improve athletes' performance, and prevent knee injury." The device can also treat knee damage caused by aging, or injuries from sports or accidents.

So far, APOS markets its product in Israel, Singapore, and the UK, where it operates with Britain's largest private health insurance company BUPA Ltd. APOS intends to use the proceeds from Pitango's investment to finance the launch of its device in other countries, especially the US, Germany, and Japan. APOS is currently seeking US FDA approval.

The Apos device is a novel new arthritis treatment and osteoarthritis treatment. It is an auto immune disease where the body's cells are attacked by its own immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis patients may not experience any symptoms for a long period even though it lasts for years.

Chronic rheumatoid arthritis can cause permanent joint destruction and deformity. The exact cause of this rheumatoid arthritis is not clearly understood but it is known to affect people of all ages. It is suspected that environmental factors or infections trigger the immune system of the body.

Symptoms and signs of rheumatoid arthritis:

Depending on the degree of inflammation, the symptoms may come and go. The intensity of the disease varies depending on the degree of inflammation. The disease is active when the body tissues are active and the disease is inactive (in remission) when the inflammation subsides. When the disease is active, symptoms include the following:
Loss of energy and appetiteFatigueMuscle and joint achesLow grade feverStiffness of joints (more noticeable in the morning)
Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis:

There is no cure for this disease. But the treatment plan involves reducing the pain and inflammation of the joints, maximizing the functionality of the joints, and preventing joint destruction and deformity. Treatment for arthritis involves usage of various medications, rest, exercise to strengthen the joints, and educating the patient about the disease.

The arthritis treatment usually entails a combination of drug therapy and non drug therapies that will control the inflammation of the joint and minimize joint damage. In some case, surgery may be required.

Also the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis should be tailored to individual patients needs. This includes the severity of the condition, effectiveness of particular therapies, side effects etc. Also if the person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis is suffering from any other ailments, then the treatment plan should be planned in a different manner. This usually happens with patients who suffer from kidney related problems.

Medications that are used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis includes:
NSAID's which helps to reduce pain and inflammation of the joints. It does not reduce the long term effects of this disease. The side effects of these drugs should be weighed before it is taken.Disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs reduces inflammation, prevents damage to joints, preserve joint structure and functions and helps the patients to do their daily activities with ease.Biologic agents target the cells of the immune system, joints, secretions of the joints etc that causes inflammation and joint destruction. Since these fights with the immune system of the body, it should be used cautiously with patients who suffer from infections.Steroids have strong anti-inflammatory properties which has the potential to provide quick relief to rheumatoid symptoms.
Apart from medications, non pharmacological treatment for arthritis includes:
Educating and counseling the patients about the disease. This will help the patient to understand about the disease and cope up with the challenges of the disease.Fatigue is a common symptom that is associated with rheumatoid arthritis. It's manifested through a swollen joint, and most commonly affects the toe, though it can occur in other parts of the body as well. Gout is additionally a recurring condition, and having it means that you have to live your life in a particular way to avoid triggering it and prevent gout attacks from occurring.

Preventing gout from showing up is the best way to deal with it - and for that, you must know what causes it and what you can do to avoid it. Gout is caused mainly by an increase in the levels of uric acid in your blood - so naturally, controlling its levels is what you have to do to prevent gout from bothering you. This mostly boils down to your diet, though your lifestyle in general will play a role to some extent too. You must cut down on foods like meat and certain kinds of seafood, while also increasing your intake of Vitamin C. Alcohol and weight problems must be brought under control as well, as they're also serious contributors to gout-related problems.

If you're suffering from a gout attack, getting relief for it can be achieved in various ways. If the attack is of a lower magnitude and came about suddenly and recently, you can get some gout relief by applying ice on the affected area a few times for one day which should reduce the swelling and relieve your pain to a good degree.

On the other hand, gout relief may also require the appropriate medications, as your condition may be more serious and beyond what an ice pack can do to help you. The most commonly applied types of medicine for treatment of gout conditions include anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids as well as colchicine.

Of course, steroids are certainly not for everyone and appropriate precautions should be taken to avoid damaging your body even further. Always talk to your physician if you're planning on using steroids to get gout relief, and always use them responsibly too - there are certain limitations which you should never exceed, and knowing yours is the best way to make sure you won't get into any trouble.

So in the end, it's a sad truth you have to accept that gout is more or less a permanent condition, and if you've had it once it's likely to happen again - but only if you allow it to. Remember, gout still relies entirely on the levels of uric acid in your blood, so gout relief more or less comes down to keeping those levels in check. Of course, this may require you to change your lifestyle a bit and adapt to living in a way that prevents gout from manifesting - so that you never need gout relief at all - and this will certainly take some effort, but in the end, it'll be well worth the effort. There are a myriad of great cures and remedies available online for gout symptoms as well.

If you want a reliable cure and treatment regimen for you gout symptoms make sure you visit and learn what you can do about Gout right now.

There's no need to keep suffering with your gout symptoms. Glucosamine is needed in the production of glicosaminoglycan, a significant molecule that is needed for the repair and formation of the cartilage and other tissues of the body.

As we age, glucosamine production slows down thus the ability of our body to repair damaged cartilage also slows down, making us susceptible to osteoarthritis. Glucosamine is very beneficial to osteoarthritis sufferers since it aids in the formation and repair of a new cartilage.

The combination of these two supplements is very beneficial in treating symptoms of osteoarthritis. It is a perfect combination where in there is a repair of the cartilage and maintenance of a healthy cartilage.

However, not all uses of these supplements are approved by FDA. This is generally thought to be caused by accumulated damage to the connective tissues that the body can no longer efficiently repair, which is why most of the people affected are of more advanced years. While injuries, disease and general wear and tear of the connective tissues are factors that increase the chances of developing osteoarthritis, the exact causes are yet unknown.

Because of this, there is no known cure to osteoarthritis, and most treatments instead seek to relieve the symptoms of the disease. This usually allows most people with osteoarthritis the ability to live relatively normal lives, despite having the disease.

Conventional medicine's first approach is to prescribe analgesics to deal with the pain, while anti-inflammatory medication may also be prescribed to deal with any inflammation in the joints. Stiffness and the loss of mobility are treated with physical therapy, and most will also be advised to follow a regimen of moderate exercise to strengthen surrounding muscles. These methods are usually very effective, though more extreme cases may require other steps, such as surgical replacement of the joint.

Aside from conventional methods, alternative natural methods of treatment are also available. These methods include a wide range of disciplines within the classification of alternative medicine, including but not limited to herbal medicine, acupuncture, and the use of natural supplements. In general, conventional medicine does not advocate the use of alternative methods, though some doctors are beginning to accept the use of some alternative methods.

Despite the lack of support from conventional doctors and medical professionals, alternative natural remedies for osteoarthritis continue to be used, with a growing number of affected individuals admitting to have at least tried out these remedies. In fact, a good number claim to continue to use alternative methods, and testify to the effectiveness of various natural methods.

Why do these people choose to use natural remedies to treat their osteoarthritis? Here are some of the most common reasons:

1. More Practical: In some cases, these natural remedies are considered more practical, as well as economical. Many natural methods advocate the use of remedies that are readily available at home, reducing the expense of treating osteoarthritis. Many of those same methods are also easy to take, or apply, with little need for special instructions or even equipment. In some cases, even using natural supplements for treatment can cost substantially less than prescription drugs.

2. Safe To Use: Most people who take natural remedies for osteoarthritis perceive these remedies to be safer to use than conventional drugs and medications. Most conventional medications, specially those which are more potent in nature, carry with them risks of harmful side effects, particularly through long-term use. Generally speaking, most alternative natural methods do not have such harmful side effects, or if they do, they are relatively minor when compared to the risks carried by conventional drugs.

3. Healthier: The growing perception of many people today is that "natural" equates to "healthy" and that carries over to the remedies and methods used to treat osteoarthritis. While this is not always the case, the fact is that a good number of natural remedies are healthier for the body. Herbal remedies, for example, may also include vitamins and minerals that the body needs, and are also often used to treat more than one condition as well.

4. They Are Effective: Perhaps the best reason that natural remedies are used to treat osteoarthritis symptoms is the fact that they are effective. This is after all the bottom line in any arthritis treatment, and the bottom line for anybody who has arthritis. Proof of their effectiveness may come in the form of a few tests and studies, or even from testimonies of others with arthritis, but for many, these are enough reason to believe that they are effective.

Meredith Walker is a Houston, TX-based online researcher, writer and provider of information on arthritis natural remedies to relieve sufferers of arthritis and arthritic related symptoms, that hopes to help persons suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, C osteoporosis, gout and general joint soreness or stiffness. If you are looking to eliminate physical pain, a chronic pain treatment specialist is someone that can help. There are many types of treatments offered to help relieve and essential eliminate discomfort.

What is chronic pain? While acute pain may mean experiencing discomfort for shorter periods of time, chronic pain can negatively affect a person's lifestyle for months - or even a year! This type of discomfort can take a toll on both physical and mental aspects of a person's life. On top of the obvious physical complaints, many are taunted by depression. Being in constant discomfort often prevents people from exercising, and as we all know, lack of exercise can lead to depression as well. As some describe is, chronic pain is when the discomfort won't go away for an extended period of time - even when the expected healing time has already passed.

What areas can be treated? A specialist can help with anything from acute to chronic pain. Main problem areas they are trained to help treat are in the back and lower back, in different joints, in the neck and any other problematic areas.

What do they do? They help people overcome their discomfort by performing different forms of pain therapy, depending on what is provoking their discomfort. For example, many people see a specialist for problems like arthritis. This is a painful condition in the joint that has literally more than 100 different diagnoses. There is no cure to arthritis, and the earlier it can be treated, the better. A specialist can help distinguish which type of arthritis a patient is dealing with and exactly which treatment(s) will help "cure" them. This condition may not have an absolute "cure", but there are definite effective ways to control the problem and live a normal life. Lupus is another known disease that a specialist can help control. Lupus is similar to arthritis because it brings out joint inflammation pains, but lupus is spread throughout the whole body and can cause discomfort in kidneys, blood, skin, and joints. There is not a cure to lupus, but a specialist can seriously help their patients live a comfortable lifestyle on a daily basis.

Research will back the advances made in the therapy and pain management that a specialist can offer. It is really quite a remarkable difference the amount of pain that can be avoided by seeking the help of a chronic pain specialist.

View the original article here

Instant Gout Pain Relief - Does Baking Soda Really Work Like They Say It Does?

Searching for immediate gout pain alleviation? Sometimes this scary molecule gets lost in a sea of fish oil supplement benefits.

There is a lot of omega-6 already in the American diet--remember that the purpose for taking omega-3 is to balance out the amount of omega-6 that you're already getting. I'm always saddened by the sheer amount of people who are not aware of this basic fact.

Actually, omega-6 is in general, bad for you.

Omega-6 has been directly associated with the inflammatory causes of arthritis, and has also been associated with depression. Part of the reason that omega-3 is able to solve some of these problems is that EPA fish oils balance out omega-6, and compete for the enzymes that omega-6 needs to function.

So, taking EPA is a good way to prevent the harm of a diet high in omega-6.

Both omega-3 and omega-6 use the same enzymes, and when they are both present in the blood, they prevent the other from doing it's job. Since omega-6 usually does a bad job, it's good for there to be more omega-3 in your system.

Omega-3 molecules hog the enzymes, and there's more good accomplished in terms of cellular function.

One example of harm caused by Omega-6

Omega-6 aggravates the inflammation which causes arthritis. We know that the basic cause of arthritis pain and swelling is the inflammation response.

Inflammation causes arthritis, arthritis causes pain, and pain causes many of us not be able to do all the things that we would like to do in a given day. Omega-6 can also aggravate gout. One good way to eliminate omega-6 from your diet is to cut down on the amount of vegetable oil you consume. This is one of the primary sources of omega-6, and is really the reason that most people need to take omega-3.

Gout can, in some cases be viewed as an extreme form of arthritis, and gout prevents many people from walking. One of the best ways to cure gout is a daily regimen of omega-3, in combination with some simple pain relievers. Some people are surprised when their doctor recommends this treatment, but it is standard and effective. It's also a good idea to maintain good hygiene, especially with your feet.

Many people may have these problems, and gout or arthritis are serious concerns for them. It's important to remember, though, that these concerns develop over time. Preventing harmful chemicals from accumulating within your blood today will prevent you from having to deal with gout and arthritis tomorrow.

Ingesting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, like EPA and DHA, is probably the most important step that you can take on a dietary level in order to prevent gout and relieve arthritis pain at the same time.

View the original article here

Nutrition and Vitamin Supplements - Don't Throw Your Money Away!

Studies have shown that nutrition and vitamin supplements are only partially dissolved, and only about 50% of the supplement is absorbed by the body. Depending on how well your digestive system is functioning depends on the intake of these supplements, and how much passes straight through the body. Any excess not absorbed by the body is lost through your urine, which gives true meaning to the statement, "flushing money down the toilet".

Sewerage treatment plant inspections have found nutritional supplement tablets which have only been partially dissolved, and believe it or not, some tablets bearing an insignia of the product name or company STILL visible. An occupational therapist can pinpoint areas where difficulties may arise and suggest simple but effective solutions. Rails on the bathroom wall are useful, and rails on the edge of the bath are vital as soon as getting in and out proves painful. A non slip rubber mat on the bottom of the bath is a wise safety measure. Taps that have push up and down controls are easier than ones that have to be turned. If you have problems with your wrists and shoulders, a back brush may be awkward to use, opt instead for a back scrubbing strap.

Put the soap somewhere where there is no risk of slipping on it. If your fingers are even moderately affected, you may find using an ordinary toothbrush or razor difficult. Long handles can be fitted to tooth brushes. Electric razors may be easier and safer to use than ones in plastic handles. Getting on and off the lavatory seat can be a problem with painful knees, hips and weak legs. A higher toilet seat to reduce the distance you have to raise and lower yourself helps. It can be installed with the toilet or bought as an add on.

Arm rests can be attached to the toilet and rails can be fitted to help you get up and down. It is important to have these aids properly fitted. Avoid clothes that are done up at the back. Where you keep your clothes matters too. Bending down to pull open low, stiff drawers should be avoided as far as possible. So should cluttered pathways between the bed, bath or shower, chest of drawers and dressing table. Clothing should be stored in as open a way as possible, perhaps on open shelves behind a curtain.

In the kitchen, store items used every day in easy to reach places, where you do not have to stretch or bend excessively. You may need a variety of gadgets to make your life easier. You can buy an electric can opener to open tins, for example. Corkscrews should be the double action type that avoids the need for pulling. Occupational therapists can advise on a range of aids for eating and drinking. Serrated knives help in cutting up food. High friction plastic or rubber mats placed under the plates stop them from slipping around. Specially designed mugs and other utensils that are easier to grip are also available.

View the original article here

Turning To Herbal Remedies To Treat Arthritis

Literally millions worldwide are affected by arthritis in one form or another, with the numbers on the rise yearly. In part, this is because there is no known method to cure the various forms of arthritis. Also, to some degree, it is almost inevitable, as one of the most common forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis, is likely to be developed by those past the age of fifty.

It is not a new disease, and there are cases where the skeletons of prehistoric man have been found to bones that showed signs of arthritis. It is likely that this disease has been with mankind for as long as the human race has existed.

From the beginning, it is likely that man has sought out sources of relief from the symptoms of arthritis, and some of the herbal remedies used today may very well have first been discovered and used at the dawn of humanity. One can almost imagine prehistoric man suffering from arthritic pain, then seeking out herbal remedies by trial and error, to find an effective source of relief.

The funny thing is, that very quest for an effective arthritis remedy seems to continue today, despite all the available treatment methods and remedies. Prehistoric man digging through the various leaves and plants has been replaced with modern man popping every pill, checking every web library, trying every remedy to find relief.

Is it really so difficult to find an effective remedy for arthritis? To begin with, conventional medicines can be very effective in relieving the symptoms of many forms of arthritis. Aside from the use of drugs, conventional medicine can also utilize physical therapy to restore mobility to stiff joints, and in worst cases, can also use surgery to actually replace the joint. These on their own should seem sufficient for those who are affected by arthritis.

However, there are some actual problems with even conventional treatment methods. Conventional medicines, as effective as they can be, may eventually require higher doses or more potent medications to relieve the pain, as damage to the cartilage continues, with the body building up resistance to the drugs as well. Long term use of the more potent medications may also bring about harmful side effects, in effect trading one condition or difficulty for another.

Even physical therapy and exercise has its limits, and can basically only slow down or halt the degeneration of the joints, with no way effectively rebuild the damage already sustained by the connective tissues. Surgery does replace the joint to restore mobility, but also requires some time for rehabilitation, which may not be an option for those past a certain age.

In some other cases, people may simply want another option aside from conventional methods, to treat their arthritis. Perhaps they distrust modern medicine, or simply believe that alternative methods are healthier. Whatever the reason may be, individuals then return to the quest began by our ancestors - one for an effective remedy for arthritis. Unsurprisingly, many turn to herbal remedies for their relief.

Herbal remedies, as I have previously mentioned, may well be the very first real remedies used to treat arthritis. Some herbal remedies are passed on from generation to generation, part of the legacy of our elders and shared to the young for use when they grow old. Schools of herbal medicine can even trace their knowledge over the centuries, with some claiming to have served Kings and Emperors around the world.

It is no stretch of imagination that herbal medicine actually once held the spot in people's lives that modern medicine now holds. Admittedly, much of it would have been bound in superstition and mistaken beliefs, and yet it cannot be said that there is no truth to the effectiveness of herbal remedies in treating arthritis. And while not every plant that grows on the green Earth can be used to treat the disease, there are herbal remedies that can provide adequate, long-term relief.

If this is true, why then does modern medicine seem to advise against herbal medicines? Actually, this may very well be a mistaken notion, as many doctors and other practitioners of conventional medicine are actually aware of at least a few herbal remedies, and may even recommend them to their patients.

The conflict comes with more exotic herbs and remedies, that make use of less well-known plants. Given the scientific approach of modern medicine, combined with the lack of research performed on these other types of herbal remedies, most doctors will prefer to err on the side of safety, and will advise against the use of such remedies. After all, "first, do no harm."

Despite the lack of research and endorsement from conventional medicines, many people continue to seek out and use herbal remedies to treat their arthritis. A good many of them find effective relief in one or a combination of herbs, and even recommend these various methods to their friends and family, much like how many folk remedies are passed on. A new media even makes it possible to share their experiences with herbal remedies around the world - the internet.

Why then do some people still find it difficult to find an effective herbal remedy, if so many use them and find relief? One reason could be because different people have different metabolisms and body chemistries, which can mean the dosage and formulation that works for one, may not work for another. Another involves inadequate preparation methods - perhaps a step that was very important to the remedy has been lost along the way. In other instances, the reason may even be confusion as to the type of herbs to be used, as some herbs are called by one name in one part of the world, and another in another part of the world.

Thankfully, these difficulties are not insurmountable. Modern medicine does continue to look into the effectiveness of certain herbal remedies, and studies and research continue to be performed to understand and verify the properties of certain herbs. This will help determine adequate dosages and formulations, and can even lead to new, more effective drugs and methods. Confusion about the types of herbs to be used slowly disappears as more information is shared around the world, and people are better able to match the right plants with the right names.

Today, if you want to make use of herbal remedies, it can be as easy as turning on your computer then finding a trusted website to learn the proper herbs to be used. You can then even purchase the remedies online, as teas or liniments, or even as part of supplements that are easier to use. If you are lucky, then you may even find an authority on herbal medicine who can diagnose and prescribe the right remedies to use for your arthritis.

Herbal remedies are here to stay, and before long, modern medicine will be able to unlock its secrets - secrets that some practitioners of herbal medicine already know - and even more people will be able to find effective herbal remedies for arthritis.

Hyperuricemia is a condition in which the level of uric acid in the blood is abnormally high due to either under-excretion or overproduction, with under-excretion being the most common reason for developing hyperuricemia.

Causes of hyperuricemia include excessive consumption of purine-rich foods, alcohol consumption, obesity and hypertension, with alcohol consumption being considered the highest risk factor. People who suffer from kidney disease or take certain medications may also suffer from hyperuricemia.

Hyperuricemia Does Not Always Lead to Gout

Hyperuricemia and gout are not mutually inclusive, meaning that the presence of one does not necessarily mean the presence of the other. There are patients with hyperuricemia who do not develop gout while there are some gout suffers who have normal or even low blood uric acid levels.

Asymptomatic Hyperuricemia is the term used when you have high uric acid levels without manifesting symptoms although having this condition is considered as a precursor to developing gout. Excess uric acid causes the formation of tiny urate crystals in the blood which deposit in the tissues of the joints, resulting in recurring attacks of joint inflammation that causes pain and stiffness.

Common Gout Drugs and Home Remedies

While doctors do not recommend treatment for asymptomatic hyperuricemia since it carries some risk and may not be worth it, treating hyperuricemia and gout is essential to alleviate the pain caused by the condition. For hyperuricemia that has developed into full-blown gouty arthritis, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication is used until the symptoms of inflammation are gone.

Once the most serious symptoms have abated, urate-lowering medicine may be given provided the doctors find the risk of precipitating an attack of acute gout acceptable. To address this risk, all patients who are prescribed urate-lowering drugs also receive prophylactic colchicine coverage.

There are also some home hyperuricemia and gout remedies that you can try:
Get immediate relief from extreme joint pain by taking a mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda melted in a glass of water; You can also alleviate joint pain by taking a mixture of two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water, two or three times a day for a week;Drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day can help flush out excess uric acid;Taking thirty to forty cherries an hour during a gout attack may be effective in alleviating pain; alternately you can juice the cherries if it makes it easier for you to take; One teaspoon per day of vitamin A-rich cod liver oil can also help combat uric acid buildup.

View the original article here

Gout FAQ No 5: Is Gout Genetic?

The answer to the question, "Is Gout Genetic?" is easily answered: Yes it is.

However, as it is with so many different diseases and illnesses, blame is often misplaced on genetics much more often than it should be. Under the guise of genetic responsibility, many of today's pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed to correct health conditions that are the direct result of poor diet, stress, toxic environmental chemicals, chronic dehydration and more. Gout falls easily into this category.

In a recent study, Johns Hopkins scientists partnered with an international team that surveyed the genomes of 12,000 individuals to find a genetic cause for gout. The study helped to uncover the malfunctioning gene that can lead to high concentrations of blood urate that forms crystals in joint tissue, causing inflammation and pain - the hallmark of gouty arthritis.

They found that the ABCG2 gene makes a protein that normally transports urate out of the kidney and into urine before the waste product does any harm. The Hopkins researchers established the role of the ABCG2 gene as a cause of gout, solidifying the connection and theory that metabolic deficiencies, as well as too much rich food and alcohol, are the main culprit for this painful arthritic condition that affects more than 3 million Americans annually. They believe the ABCG2 gene may be responsible for some 10 percent of gout in Caucasians.

The study also showed that the ABCG2 protein is located in the kidney where urate excretion takes place and that it is responsible for transporting urate out of the cells. The researchers also proved that a lack of efficiency in removing urate from the blood leads to its increased concentration and crystallization. In humans, these crystals become lodged in joint tissues, leading to the painful symptoms of gout and gout attack.

The conclusion from the research is that utilizing methods to speed excretion with greater efficiency instead of employing the current approach of limiting uric acid production is the direction of the future.

Conversely, other scientific research indicates that the way the human cells receive information is controlled by signals from outside the cells; not from genes and DNA controlling our biology. The influence of negative and positive thoughts can have a profound effect on the human body as methods of retraining the thought processes is put into practice. The same is true with preventing gout and natural treatment for gout.

If the one believes that genetics are what causes gout and beyond their control, the condition may well likely flourish. From the perspective that the pain and onset of gout can be managed by natural gout treatment, home remedies for gout, and voiding foods that cause gout, genetics have little influence.

View the original article here

Natural Arthritis Treatment For Joint Pain Relief

Arthritis is a joint disorder affecting the musculoskeletal system of our body. An arthritic joint is inflamed, very painful, stiff, swollen, warm and tender. The joints are actually the union or meeting junction of two or more bone heads. The joints of our body bear the weight of our body even while we are sitting and support the entire body structure. Therefore joints are prone to much wear and tear. When arthritis invades a joint, not only the bone heads but also the adjoining tissues, muscles, ligaments and tendons are affected, making mobility painful and in some cases impossible.

Therefore arthritis may be the cause of disability for many. Arthritis may be of a hundred types, of which osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout are most widespread. Osteoarthritis occurs due to friction between bone heads at the wearing out or loss of cartilage cushions that could have otherwise protected the bone heads from friction. Rheumatoid arthritis is the result of a misdirected immune system attacking healthy joints and tissues. Gout results from metabolic malfunctioning and crystallization of uric acid in joint cavity and between bones. Some causes of arthritis may be listed as follows:

1. Lack of exercise
2. Wrong diet
3. Dehydration
4. Sedentary lifestyle
5. Obesity
6. Degeneration of cartilages
7. Natural aging of joints
8. Joint injury or bone fracture
9. Joint infection
10. Faulty joint alignment
11. Heredity
12. Lack of vitamins
13. Over-active immune system
14. Metabolic disorders.

Natural Arthritis Joint Pain Relief

1. Prickly ash tea effectively eases arthritis joint pain by improving blood circulation.

2. A cup of hot ginger tea daily alleviates arthritis joint pain and inflammation.

3. A cup of tea made from nettle leaves or root sufficiently heals arthritis joint pain.

4. Heating pad or warm, damp towel application relaxes muscles and does away with stiffness and pain.

5. Rubbing ice cubes wrapped on fabric on joints reduces pain and swelling.

6. Massaging aching joint with camphorated mustard oil or coconut oil gives much relief from pain. Olive oil, castor oil, hot vinegar or warm paraffin may also be used for massaging.

7. Application of peppermint oil on aching joints gives much relief.

8. Soaking in warm bath water in tub or adding Epsom salt to bath water also lessens arthritis joint pain.

9. Taking walk in sun without any sunscreen is perhaps the easiest way to treat arthritis joint pain naturally.

10. Practicing gentle stretching around stiff joints as many times as possible through out the day keeps arthritis pain at bay.

11. Intake of alkaline juices like carrot, celery and red beet dissolve that deposits in and around joints, relieving pain.

View the original article here

Get Various Body Alignments Treated With the Help of Message Therapy

It is well known by the people, that health is the real wealth. The term "bursitis" describes inflammation of a bursa. A bursa (plural is "bursae") is a small fluid-filled sack that cushions a joint or areas near joints.

The most common cause of bursitis is probably trauma. Repetitive motion and infection can also cause it.

One of the more common types of bursitis is termed "housemaid's knee." This is a form of bursitis that affects the prepatellar bursa. The prepatellar bursa lies in front of the patella (kneecap) and the patellar tendon. It is called "housemaid's knee" because the most common cause is trauma due to kneeling.

Another bursa, the infrapatellar bursa lies just below the prepatellar bursa and it also may be affected at the same time.

Bursitis in this area can be seen in plumbers, carpet layers, electricians, and other people for whom long-term kneeling is an important part of the work process.

What is seen on examination is swelling in front of the kneecap. There may also be redness and heat. Tenderness occurs if pressure is applied. Also, bending the knee increases the pain felt in front of the kneecap.

The diagnosis is apparent by history and physical examination. Diagnostic ultrasound can help confirm the presence of fluid within the bursa. X-rays are generally not useful and may show soft tissue swelling only.

Magnetic resonance imaging is rarely needed... but it may disclose the diagnosis in difficult cases.

The major concern when a patient with prepatellar bursitis presents, is infection. This is called "septic bursitis" and is considered a medical emergency. Heat, swelling, redness, and pain are almost always present in the presence of infection.

Fever and chills may also occur. The history usually uncovers a history of trauma involving the knee perhaps with an associated puncture wound or scrape. Tenderness is exquisite.

The diagnosis is established by aspirating fluid from the bursa (best done using ultrasound guidance).

Once aspirated, the fluid should be sent for culture. Steroids should not be injected! If infection is present, then the appropriate antibiotic should be started. While oral antibiotics are usually sufficient, intravenous antibiotics may be required if the infection is serious or has progressed.

It may be necessary to repeat the aspiration of the bursa multiple times to ensure sterilization of the bursal fluid has occurred. Prevention of recurrence is importance. Kneepads are extremely useful for this task.

View the original article here

Is Lowering Uric Acid Naturally Through Diet Better Than Using Drugs?

We have two options when lowering uric acid in order to prevent gout; natural remedies (in this case we are considering just diet) or conventional acid-reducing drugs. But which is best? To answer that question, let's first look at conventional treatment for lowering uric acid...

Conventional Drugs For Lowering Uric Acid in the Body

Probably the most common drug used is allopurinol which inhibits the xanthine oxidase enzyme that activates uric acid production in the liver. In this way it can be used to reduce acid levels in the blood over time.

And it has to be recognized that allopurinol is a long-term solution, with most folks having to take it over their life time. This is because they only work as long as they are being taken, they are not a 'cure.' In addition, they can have some negative side effects such as rashes, liver dysfunction, dermatitis, etc.

Another unfortunate 'side effect' is that if they are taken during a gout attack, then they tend to make the gout symptoms more severe. This is why it is recommended to not start this treatment until at least one month has elapsed since the end of the last gout attack.

Probenecid and sulfinpyrazone are uricosuric drugs that can also lower uric acid in the body, but this time by helping to increase the excretion of the acid through the kidneys. These drugs are also a lifetime commitment. One of the side effects of this therapy is possible kidney stone formation, particularly where the patient has an existing kidney problem.

Now let's take a look at lowering acid naturally using diet...

Using Diet For Reducing Uric Acid in the Body

Our bodies contain nucleotides called 'purines' which are chemical compounds. When these break down, as they naturally do during the metabolizing process, uric acid is produced in the bloodstream.

But they also exist in many of our foods and these breakdown in our bodies during the digestive process, thus producing acid in the bloodstream.

Now, under normal circumstances, the kidneys can process the total amount of acid and expel excess from the body via the urine. But, where there is too much being produced, and / or, the kidneys are not functioning to the best of their ability, then excess acid is retained and circulated in the blood. Thus leading to crystal formation and gout.

So diet is important because it contributes to the overall production of uric acid in your blood. An important issue is that some foods contain more purines than others. Generally speaking, foods high in protein are high in purines, so these must be avoided. These are foods such as game, organ meat, fatty red meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, and so on.

Lowering Uric Acid Naturally v Drug-Based Medication

It's safe to say that reducing uric acid through diet is much preferable to the use of drugs. It's clear that the drug-based solution only works whilst they are being taken and can have some negative side effects. This is pertinent when you consider that the drugs such as allopurinol are lifetime commitments.

Dietary changes on the other hand, although perhaps difficult to adjust to in the beginning, are safer and just as effective, if not more so. Although you must always consult your physician before making any significant changes to your diet.

View the original article here

Gout Symptoms And Gout Causes

Gout is a very severe form of arthritis and occurs when there is a profusion of uric acid built up in the body. Uric acid is a waste product and builds up due to overloading of the organs including the liver and kidneys. As soon as there is a build up of Uric acid present in the body the consequence can include such as antagonizing pain in the joints all the way through the body, especially appearing in the big toes. Uric acid build up can also result in painful kidney stones.

It is difficult to predict when an attack of gout will occur. Symptoms can develop rapidly over a few hours and usually last for 3-10 days. After this time, the joint will start to feel normal again and any pain or discomfort should eventually disappear completely.

The sooner symptoms are treated, the more quickly the pain will pass. You may experience symptoms every few weeks, months or years, but it is impossible to predict when the condition will recur. Sixty-two per cent of people experience a repeat attack of gout within a year. However, some people only ever experience one attack in their lifetime.

Many times the gout attack can be relentless and very excruciating; equally it often awakens one from sleep when the attack occurs.

Gout symptoms can be broken down into three key stages:

1. The first symptom of gout is acute (sudden and severe) joint pain, usually in the joint of the big toe. Symptoms often develop during the night, although they can occur at any time. Other symptoms of gout include:
Swelling of jointsInflammation of jointsShiny red skin over the affected jointsItchy and flaky peeling skin over the affected joints
The intense pain that gout causes can make walking and getting around difficult. Even the light pressure of a bed cover or blanket can be painful.

It is at this stage when gout starts to cause injury to the body. The blood becomes incapable of breaking down the elevated level of uric acid and it begins to crystallize and then be deposited in joint spaces. This is when the agony and swelling occurs. Attacks by and large come about during the nighttime and if not treated can continue for weeks at a time. If not treated still the attacks turn out to be more brutal and keep going for longer periods of time.

2. The second stage of gout is the time when an attack of gout has subsided and at this time there are no symptoms but it is because the body's immune system is stabilizing itself for extra attacks on the uric acid crystals which have become overly concentrated in the blood. If the gout sufferer does not achieve treatment by this stage the disease can be very problematical to control.

3. The third and final stage of gout is when it becomes chronic, which is the nastiest and most destructive stage of the disease. By this stage the gout has caused lasting impairment to the joints and in specific cases the kidneys as well. Equally at this stage the affiliated joint can grow to be deteriorated and cause crippling pain. In extreme cases the kidney can lose its functions, which can subsequently lead to kidney failure and death. Gout is a disease like many others which builds upon itself if not treated at the opening stages. It is vitally important to recognise the gout symptoms at the earliest stages before irreversible damage is done. There are many cases of people achieving an effective cure.

View the original article here

Natural Treatment for Renal Calculi

If you are suffering from kidney stones there are a number of treatment for renal calculi options that are available to you. Kidney stones are crystalline materials formed in the kidney and there are a number of risk factors associated with the development of renal calculi.

Chronically high amounts of uric acid in the blood can cause the formation of kidney stones as can decreases in the amount of urine and dehydration. Having certain health conditions such as gout, urinary tract infection, hypertension and diabetes can increase the risk of urate stones. Having a family history of renal calculi can also put you at greater risk of developing kidney stones.

Symptoms and Diagnoses

Symptoms of renal calculi include difficulty urinating, blood in the urine and excruciating pain in the lower back, side, abdomen and groin. If you have any of these symptoms you should immediately seek treatment for renal calculi. The usual test for diagnosing kidney stones is a helical CT scan that will detect the presence of renal calculi in the urinal tract. For pregnant women who cannot be exposed to radiation, an ultrasound examination may be performed.

Most renal stones will pass through the urinary tract on their own within two days, so long as the patient takes sufficient fluids. If the pain of the passage is too intense, doctors may prescribe pain killers to ease the suffering. If the renal stones are too large to pass through the urinary tract, surgery may be prescribed as a treatment for renal calculi.

Recently, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) was developed to remove kidney stones without the need for surgery. ESWT uses sound waves precisely aimed at the kidney stone that causes it to dissolve into smaller pieces that can easily be passed through the urinary tract or dissolve into the body.

Natural Noninvasive Treatments

There are a number of natural treatment for renal calculi options available to help those with a genetic propensity towards kidney stones from developing them. These include:
Diet modification that includes increasing the amount of water intake to at least 50% of a person's body weight as expressed in ounces (i.e. if you weigh 180 pounds you should drink at least 90 oz of water daily) as well as a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in foods that are rich in purine.Avoiding alcoholic beverages since they promote the buildup of uric acid, processed sugars, fish such as salmon and sardines and refined wheat products such as white bread, cookies and other pastries.Taking magnesium supplements, since the lack of magnesium in the system has been linked to the formation of kidney stones.Aerobic exercise is good to improve the blood flow and sweating is an effective way to excrete excess minerals and toxins out from the body which can help to reduce the burden on the kidneys.

View the original article here

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment - Non-Dairy Sources of Probiotics Supplements

Rheumatoid Arthritis is not inevitable, no matter the particulars of your family history or genetics. Some people have genetics that make them more susceptible, but something must still trigger the disease process. Likewise, it is usually possible, even after the rheumatoid arthritis has been triggered, to "untrigger" it by reversing its underlying causes.

One underlying causes of rheumatoid arthritis is a disruption of healthy gut bacteria. This can happen because of any number of stressors: taking antibiotics, losing a job, losing a loved one, having a loved one seriously ill or injured, divorce, your home going into foreclosure, surgery, taking a board exam, traveling in a third world country, getting some other illness, working long hours without enough rest and more. Even joyful events like the birth or a child, a job promotion or, moving to a new house can cause stress that can trigger RA.

This is because for most people stress has a strong impact on the gut. Once gut flora gets out of balance it can stay that way for years and years, until something helps it to rebalance itself.

This rebalancing of gut flora is one way to help "untrigger" rheumatoid arthritis.

One way to do this is by reintroducing healthy bacteria everyday through your diet.

Most people know about the benefits of eating live culture yogurt because of the healthy bacteria it contains. Most people don't realize the almost infinite number of other sources of probiotics. Many can be made in your own kitchen without much effort and easily incorporated into your everyday diet.

If you can eat dairy, it is easy to get probiotics through yogurt, kefir, and the many commercial probiotics supplements grown on a dairy base.

If you can't eat dairy, you may not realize how easy it is to still get enough probiotics.

Here is partial list of the many non-dairy probiotics-containing foods you can eat and drink:
Commercially available cultured coconut milkHomemade cultured coconut milk, soymilk, rice milk or fruit juice made using kefir grainsUnpasteurized sauerkrautUnpasteurized kim cheeSour picklesOther vegetable ferments, such as sour beets, sour turnips, fermented radishes, etc."Potato cheese" - cooked potato fermented with brine from live sauerkraut cultureBrine from ferments used as a digestive tonic and Soup StockFermented chutneyMisoMiso PicklesTempeh-soyFerments made from other beans such as pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans, etc.Rejuvenac-made from sprouted grainKombucha-a tea fermented with a special kombucha culturePorridge-fermented overnight before cooking to increase digestibility
These probiotics-containing foods start with either an already established culture which you can buy or someone can gift you (yogurt, kefir, miso, tempeh and other bean ferments and kombutcha) or capture wild bacteria from the air (sauerkraut, kim chee, sour pickles, other vegetable ferments, brines, rejuvenac and porridge.)

View the original article here

Avoiding Foods That Cause Gout Can Help Alleviate The Painful Symptoms of Gout

For anyone that suffers from the pain of gout, knowing the foods that cause gout or increase the symptoms of gout is a good thing to know.

Gout is caused by excess uric acid. Uric acid is actually a waste by-product formed when purines, which are an organic compound, breakdown. Normally our kidneys filter out the uric acid but if there is too much then the kidneys cannot keep up. Crystals from the uric acid then form around joints causing severe pain. One of the most common spots for gout to appear is the big toe.

Foods that have a high concentration of purines can cause your gout to flare up. Foods such as red meat, lamb, pork and organ meats do have high levels of purine and should be avoided.

So all that sounds pretty simple right? Well actually no not really. I would like to know what exactly I should be avoiding on a daily basis. Can I eat that yummy hot dog from the street vendor or should I stick to packing a daily boring lunch.

As with anything moderation is the key. It is really hard to avoid all foods that have purine in them. Some foods will affect you more than others and over time you will know which foods will trigger an attack.

Usually when we think of foods that cause gout we tend to think about just meat. However certain vegetables can also cause gout. Some vegetables that fall into the category of foods that cause gout are cauliflower, mushrooms, beans, and peas to mention a few. Although some of these do not even contain purines they are still responsible in producing high levels of uric acid which as we already know is a cause of gout.

Knowing the foods that cause gout is good but it is not the only thing we should be aware of to avoid a gout attack. We should be aware that obesity can also be a cause of gout. The extra weight that a person carries tends to put a strain on their kidneys. The kidneys in turn do not perform at optimal levels, thus they do not filter out all the uric acid.

Another cause of gout that many people are probably aware of is alcohol. Beer and whiskey seem to have more of an effect on a person's gout than wine but everyone reacts differently. Best to avoid it all together.

By learning about the foods that cause gout we can hopefully have success in treating our gout. If we do not treat our gout properly we could end up causing permanent damage to our body joints.

Remember before you embark on any treatment to seek the advice of a medical professional.

View the original article here

Weight Loss and Arthritis

A light body is easy on your bones.

Arthritis is a disease of the bones. The bone structure is responsible for holding up the rest of the body. If you keep piling on the pounds, the stress on the bone structure will become unbearable. That is why your doctors will advise you that it is in your best interests to cut down on the weight. This is not something that is outside the realms of possibility if you take a good diet and practice some physical activity on a regular basis. Do not go crazy with the dieting or else you might have another serious problem in the form of anorexia. The drugs for osteoporosis might mean that you need to have a good diet in order to allow them to work correctly.

Back pain, ankylosing spondylitis and the antiphospholipid syndrome will all be made worse if you continue to pile on weight. It is estimated that arthritis affects 46 million people. Therefore you will not be on your own in terms of managing the condition. You certainly need to tell your boss so that they can make reasonable adjustment to the work place. They will also understand if you have to take time off work in order to attend a doctor's appointment. Even if you already have osteoporosis there is nothing to say that you cannot develop gout. Therefore you should not let the body go in the belief that the worst is over.

There have been many books written about the subject of weight loss. The reality is that this is one of the most difficult things to achieve on a consistent basis. First of all you need to take a gradual approach. Keep reducing your portion sizes until you feel that you are on the right level. If you have to hide your meals from anyone then there is something wrong. Burgers are not a good friend at this time. The consumption of alcohol especially red wine will increase the risk that you have of developing a serious bout of gout. Citrus fruits as well as assorted green vegetables are a must for the arthritis patient.

The use of dietary supplements is somewhat controversial. In some literature these supplements are recommended in addition to natural foods. Other writers argue that you have to stick to the natural foods. You need to make the best use of your resources at the time. The Mediterranean diet is excellent but some of the ingredients can be quite expensive. Not everyone can live on seared tuna and salads of "Wagyu beef".

View the original article here

Food For Gout Patients - Combating Gout by Eating the Right Foods

What type of food for gout patients would be considered good? Fruits, like red berries and citrus fruits would be good. The berries (especially black cherries) are extremely good for their antioxidant properties and have been shown to lower the levels of acid in your body that actually cause gout. Citrus fruits would be good for the vitamin C you are going to get from them. High levels of this vitamin have also been shown to lower the acid levels of uric acid that is the main cause of gout and kidney stones. The uric acid builds up and crystallizes either in the form of kidney stones or within the joints that cause the pain associated with gout.

Pastas would also be a good food for gout patients. Pastas are a good source of carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies need. You should consider replacing one meat dish with pasta whenever you possibly can. Meat proteins get broken down in our bodies and actually become uric acid. Because of this you should avoid them; especially organ meats and seafood.

Instead use pasta, eggs, peanut butter, tofu, and even nuts as your protein sources. You may not notice the difference right away, but if you make this a lifetime change you should notice that the flare-ups happen less often. Remember that I said kidney stones and gout do not happen overnight, changing your diet will not help overnight either, but it should help in the long run.

Another food for gout patients that should be avoided is many of the vegetables. Green, leafy vegetables, beans, and legumes should not be part of the diet you should be consuming. Red peppers, yellow peppers, peas, onions, carrots, and corn would all be safe for you to include whenever you want.

This is not even close to being a complete list of the foods that should be avoided or included for gout patients. Food for gout patients can really make a huge difference because the levels of uric acid are the cause of the condition. Because of that, it stands to reason that if you avoid foods that increase the level and include foods that lower it you should suffer from fewer attacks. Please note that this will not do much to help when you are actually having an attack; it is more of a preventative measure. This cannot be said to actually cure gout either, though it has been shown to help dramatically.

View the original article here

What Is Arthritis, How to Diagnose and Treatment of Arthritis

Arthritis is a frequent accompaniment of old age. Every third person in America is affected by it. It is a complex disorder that boasts of more than 100 distinct conditions, and remains to be the leading cause of disability among many people who are aged 55 years or older. While knowing about it may not reduce the prevalence and ubiquity of arthritis, it will surely help many with dealing and managing the disease, and to reduce the complications of the disease.

What is Arthritis?

Etymologically, arthritis means the inflammation of joints, or the sections where two bones meet and join. As a result, people who suffer from arthritis usually complain from pain, stiffness, and difficulty in moving usually centered on a set of joints. While most people relate a "cracking" sound when rotating limbs from the joint area as a sign of arthritis, there is no medical proof to support this conclusion. Instead, this "cracking" sound is a result the pressure of joint fluid being pushed around the area of a joint. This joint fluid lubricates the area between the joints and helps protect these bones from rubbing and damaging each other.

In some types of arthritis, the pain is worse at night or subsequently after a period of rest, while others complain of worse pain around the time of their morning shower. Regardless of what time the symptom of pain manifests itself, the general symptom of arthritis is prolonged and sustained pain that emanates from the joints.

How do you Diagnose Arthritis?

Arthritis is diagnosed by a physical examination designed to best characterize the surrounding factors causing pain. These include when the pain was first felt, how long that pain was felt, around which joints or bodily areas the pain was localized in, and what factors worsened or lessened the pain. Blood tests, X-ray scans, and radio-graphs help assess and track progression of arthritis in a more quantitative manner.

If there are indications of other specific types of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis, screening blood tests may be performed. Blood tests will measure their rheumatoid factor, their anti nuclear factor, their extractable nuclear antigen measure, and the presence of other specific antibodies.

Treatment of Arthritis

As is true for all forms of arthritis, the first step in treatment is pain management. This is done through a combination of medication prescribed by a physician to adequately relieve the patient of the pain caused by arthritis. After which, a combination of physical and occupational therapy to help relieve pain and work the joints to lessen or slow the progression of arthritis may be prescribed by the physician as well. For those people whose form of arthritis causes the erosion of joints or may have endangering effects for adjacent organs, arthroscopic or joint replacement surgery may be recommended.

View the original article here
