The key to getting people to buy what you have to offer is marketing, and if you have been working on attracting people to your products and services already, you know there is no lack of vehicles available on the internet to do just that. But that’s part of the problem. There are so many ways available to let people know about what you have to offer it is difficult to know what the best one is. More to the point, there is little out there to help you discover which one is the best one for you.
Most successful internet based marketers that I know of have found their success through a hit-and-miss process that has cost them a lot of time and money. They are successful in large part because they learned from early failures and they did not let those failures dissuade them from continuing to pursue their vision. But depending on what source you read, the percentage rate of internet based businesses that fail is in the mid- to upper-90s. A call for help that I’ve seen a lot lately in the forums, mostly from newbie Internet Marketers but sometimes from the more experienced. I don’t pretend to know everything about de-indexing, sandboxing or Google’s mood swings but I know enough to be able to find out if a site has really been taken out of the index and how to sort it out. So that’s what I’m going to talk about today.

We will start at the beginning for those who are completely new to the game.

What is Indexing?

It’s like a huge Internet directory for websites. When you do a search for something the most relevant websites for your search terms should come up on your screen in list form – that is after the paid for ads of course which you will generally find are not so good, or thin affiliate sites. There can be thousands of relevant sites but the top ten positions apart from the ads are the most important to us Internet Marketers because they get the most visitors. Therefore we work hard to manipulate our sites into the top ten of the index for various keywords to increase the chances of our sites being found.

How do I know if my site has been indexed?

Just put site:yourdomainname into the Google search engine and underneath the search box you will hopefully see ‘About (a figure) Results’. The figure tells you how many pages and tags of your website or blog have been indexed by mighty Google. I tested it with this blog site:patriciajones.org and came up with ‘About 332 results’.

I then made up a domain and tested that getting ‘Your search – site:to.co.uk – did not match any documents’. That is what you get if your site hasn’t been indexed or has been de-indexed. BUT, sometimes your site might disappear out of the Google index and appear again the next day or the next week so don’t panic! Today I was just about to get into the shower when I heard a once familiar call and the clip clop of a horse. I couldn’t believe what I heard and had to look out of the window to check that I was hearing right. I saw a sight which I haven’t seen for many years – a scruffy man with horse and cart collecting other peoples junk from which he was planning to make money – a rag and bone man.

It reminded me of Steptoe and Son (Sanford and Son in the US) the popular sit com from the sixties and seventies, the rag and bone man even looked like Harold Steptoe from a distance. Harold and his father Albert ran a scrap yard and the rag and bone men went out on their rounds daily collecting junk, some free some paid for, the junk was recycled for profit proving the saying that one mans rubbish is another mans treasure.

I used to love watching Steptoe and Son and I’ll never forget the phrase “You dirty old man” said by Harold to his father in such a despising way. The humor probably wasn’t politically correct, but sometimes I think that PC has gone too far anyway.

Seeing the rag and bone man made me think about entrepreneurship and Internet marketing in a roundabout way. It made me realise that just as he collects free products for resale you can use free products and free tools and resources to help build your Internet business and there is no better time to start than now.

We keep hearing about the recession and how it has affected the lives of millions. When recessions hit many people lose their jobs and struggle to find other employment, but it is also a time when entrepreneurs rise from the ashes of high unemployment. Some create empires from real world businesses like my rag and bone man. Others get involved with business opportunities on and offline. Many don’t succeed but some do and it is because of those success stories that so many try.

New businesses need different levels of start up capital depending upon the type of business that is being launched. Real world businesses generally need more start up capital. For instance the rag and bone man would need a horse and cart and somewhere to store his ‘stock’. He would also need the know how to renovate or recycle his ‘stock’ and where to sell his goods.

An Internet business can be started with nothing except a computer, an ability to search and learn, a commitment to hard work and patience and little or no investment capital – but that could weaken your chance of success. However, there is no need to throw your life savings into Internet marketing because there are an awful lot of free products and free tools and resources waiting out there for you to make a start, learn or make money with providing that you realise that it takes time and that you have a lot of patience.

Once you have acquired enough knowledge and confidence in what you are doing then is the time to spend money, but with caution. Throwing money at programmes with claims of high earnings is generally a mistake. Those who make the high earnings are usually those who start the programmes up, but we are talking about tools and resources and it costs nothing to learn using them, a way of earning while learning.

I have a penchant for software, but the majority of what I have paid for I use on a regular basis and most of my purchases have come from profits. The only mistake that I’ve made was spending hundreds of pounds in 2007 on the Memberspeed software. It just didn’t work out for me for various reasons. I’ve still got access to it and may try again but I know that I can use WordPress and free plugins to build a membership site and probably more easily.

Google have been kicking butt during the last week and a lot of the big content sites have lost large chunks of traffic due to the shake up. It wasn’t unexpected, in fact some of the more responsible article directory owners have been predicting Google’s wrath falling on shallow content farms for several years now.

Some of the sites suffering from this blow are Ezine Articles, Articles Base, Associated Content, Buzzle, Hubpages and even Bella Online. As Buzzle and Hubpages require unique to them content it’s hard to tell just what criteria Google are going by as yet. And although EZA have got tougher with authors during the last couple of years it seems that the raised standards just weren’t enough to keep them safe.

Whatever that is I don’t believe that it’s the death of article marketing, just a shakedown for all of those Internet marketers who have been trying to game the search engines to get top rankings with masses of crap content. Personally I don’t believe that most of the sites mentioned are the real culprits. I think that a lot of the directories are at fault yes, for accepting badly written or spun articles and there have been a growing number of blog chains built for the purpose of making money with adsense and whatever crap content they can find whether anybody can understand it or not.

There is lots of doom and gloom on forums from those predicting the death of article marketing, but that mostly comes from those who have been pushing out quantity for backlinks instead of quality for syndication to authority sites. I’ve had some of my articles go viral and the effect of one really good article beats 10 mediocre articles hands down. Am I worried about my article directories? Not yet, I’ve always been careful about quality and there is some unique content on those sites. Am I worried about my article marketing? No because I would much rather go back to low output and more syndication.

An upside is for niche site owners, expect lots of offers from guest bloggers who are feeling nervous about submitting to article directories right now, but do be careful what you accept.

In my first article I outlined the Basic Steps For Getting Traffic To Your New Website Or Blog and in this article I will outline the ongoing steps that you can take to continue to build targeted traffic and all of them free.

The search engines like regularly updated content, so I try to add something to each site at least every couple of weeks. If I don't have time to write my own original content I either outsource, use guest bloggers or republish free content from article directories but always include the author's and directory links.

Some people only want unique content and won't use article directory content because they believe that their site will be penalised by the search engines. I think that view is wrong, Google wouldn't give high page ranks to any article directories, or indeed send as much traffic as they do to them if sites got penalised for not having unique content - and most directories don't have unique content because the authors syndicate to more than one directory. If you still don't agree with what I say you could always add an introduction to a syndicated article and perhaps a paragraph at the end adding your thoughts on the article at the same time as giving it some uniqueness. There are two different types of interactions involved with marketing a business, resourcing and transacting. Knowing the difference between the two (and understanding when to use them) is key to the success of your business.

In order to show you why, I’ll have to explain the essential differences between these two very different interactions.

Consider this scenario: You go into a store and find the item you are looking for, take it to the check-out counter, pay for it and leave. This interaction is an example of a transaction. You have made an overt exchange of perceived equal value. You gave the store money and they gave you the item. This is all very straightforward and unambiguous.

Now consider this one: You are looking for an address in an unfamiliar part of town and are a bit lost. You show the address to a stranger and he or she gives you directions. You follow the directions and arrive at your destination. This interaction is an example of resourcing. The person who provided the resource (directions) did so without expecting you to provide anything in return. Once again, this is all very straightforward and unambiguous.

Now finally, consider a third scenario, where the line between these two types of interactions was blurred.

While I was working on a website project recently a design tool gave me unexpected results, so I went online, found a website that offered answers on the design tool, typed in my problem, and hit ‘submit.’ The reply I got back was from someone who claimed they could tell me what was wrong and then asked what I would be willing to pay to get the answer. (They even provided me with three amounts to select from.)

This is an example of a mixed transaction/resource interaction. There was no mention of payment until I received the promise of an answer. I expected to be provided with the answer I needed for free, as is often the case when using online forums. The person on the other side expected something in return for the answer, but did not mention it up front. This interaction was not straightforward, and it created a conflict because it was not clear to both sides from the beginning what type of interaction was taking place. My response to this last minute request for payment was irritation, and I abandoned the website.

This example of a mixed transaction/resource interaction is trivial and the consequences small, but that is not always the case. If you market yourself, your products, or your services via the internet, mixed transaction/resource interactions can severely disrupt or irreparably harm your business.

When people interact, the nature of the interaction defines the nature of the relationship. If I am involved in a resourcing interaction, I am sharing what I have, know, or are capable of doing because I care about the person I am sharing with, and I want them to have what I have. In a resourcing interaction, I help you today with the expectation that at sometime in the future, when I need it, you will help me. The essence of resourcing is that an exchange is implied rather than overt, the timeframe in which it is to occur is vague and unspecified, and the value of the resources exchanged may not be equal. Resourcing is the way we build community. Resourcing is about ‘you and me together.’

On the other hand, if I am involved in a transaction, I am bartering, selling, or marketing what I have, know, or are capable of doing because it is a way to exchange what I have for what I need. I will exchange my labor, goods, or knowledge for your money, goods, or services. The essence of transactions is that an exchange is overt, the timeframe is specific, and the value of the exchange is judged to be equal by both sides. If any of these conditions is violated within the context of a transaction, we feel cheated. Transactions are the way we engage in commerce. Transactions are about you and me as separate individuals.

I have drawn a hard and fast distinction between the two, but the boundaries often blur. Internet marketers often have to move seamlessly from resourcing to transactions, while remaining clear about which they are engaged in.

A good example is Facebook. Is Facebook about social community or is it about marketing? Well, both really. Virtually everyone engaged in business on the internet uses Facebook as part of their marketing plan, but in order for it to be effective, it must also be used socially. If you do not create a Facebook community based on genuine community building, it does not matter how many “friends” you have—your marketing efforts will fall on deaf ears.

I recently “attended” a webinar where the speakers made the mistake of initiating a mixed transaction/resourcing interaction. The solicitation offered to teach me something for free. The words “teach” and “free” are key resourcing words and I expected to learn something of value.

I have been involved in enough webinars and teleclasses to know that there would be an offer of a transaction at the end where I could choose to learn more for a price. That’s good marketing if I have already really been taught something of value for free. In this case, that did not happen. The entire webinar was “high level, conceptual, and vague” until the end. The transaction offer was very clear, but I was not interested because I felt that, contrary to what the solicitation originally offered, I had learned nothing of value in the free webinar. I felt robbed of my time, lied to by the presenters, and resentful of their offer of a transaction. Their product may well be excellent, but I will never know. Any good will is gone, and I delete their follow-up emails without even looking at them.

The moral of the story? Make sure you know the difference between resourcing and transactions and know when to use each!
