I am a third year biology major at SFU and am currently taking a Conservation Biology Class. We have been assigned a project to make an impact on the environment by invoking a conservation action. I have created an ongoing online petition as my project which is promoting the decrease or elimination of the use of Styrofoam. The process of making Styrofoam is the 5th largest contributor to hazardous waste and it poses serious threats (respiratory and gastrointestinal tract infections, headache, depression) to the makers of the product. Styrofoam is not biodegradable, and a styrofoam cup lasts for 500 years in a landfill before it is completely broken down. As the product is slowly broken down, it releases a harmful monomer called styrene which combines with nitrous oxides to increase greenhouse gases. The petition will be sent to major electronic companies to increase their awareness on the issue and hopefully get them to reduce their use of Styrofoam. I would appreciate your support in this cause with a link to the petition on your website to raise more awareness. Republicans are furiously raising money, and they'll have help. The largest U.S. business lobby for insurance companies and big corporations is planning to spend $50 million to elect "big business" candidates. And the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision allows corporations to give as much money as they want in support of candidates. Candidates who stand up to corporate influence risk their voices being drowned out by the big dollars of special interests.

In contrast, the Israeli navy had worked hard to plan a peaceful interception of the six ships and its personnel only used force when their lives were at risk. In Canada for the Group of 20 summit over the weekend, President Barack Obama called on Congress to pass a $90 billiion bank tax that will last for 10 years. Congress has just approved the president's financial regulation package, and Obama looks at this as the next logical step in reining in Wall Street.

"We need to impose a fee on the banks that were the biggest beneficiaries of taxpayer assistance at the height of our financial crisis -- so we can recover every dime of taxpayer money," Obama said in his weekly address.

Germany, France and Britain have called for a global, one size fits all, bank tax, but many other G20 members including the U.S. have been less receptive of the idea.

The situation in the Gulf has become intolerable. Now, I have to admit that I was quite surprised when President Barack Obama announced that he was allowing an expansion of offshore oil and gas drilling some time ago.

As someone who had supported Obama even before he formally announced his candidacy in Feb. 2007 and who closely followed his green agenda, I did not remember him supporting offshore drilling. I do remember that he did voice some support for nuclear energy and "clean coal." While I disagree with him on these latter forms of energy, I never expect any candidate to agree with me on every issue.

However, when you are faced with the truth of things, then you have to change your opinion. You can no go against the tide of evidence. We now can see very plainly that offshore drilling is not worth the risk of the dangers that it presents.

Many people do not realize that even the relief wells that they are digging might not work! You do not have to be a genius to figure out what kind of catastrophe that would entail. And no one has suggested that the amount of oil offshore is anywhere near what we need to solve this country's dependence on foreign oil.

No union or bunch of workers has the moral right to clamor for jobs against that kind of threat. They have no right to risk other people's lives and livelihood for a high-paying job on an oil rig. They have no right to destroy a vast habitat for untold generations just because they do not want to look for a new job.

Obama releases National Security Strategy report

President Barack Obama's National Security Strategy was released today and the document shows a shift from the Bush doctrine of unilateral engagement.

Obama's strategy gives more weight to non-military means of achieving security and the new 52 page summary states: "The foundation of American leadership must be a prosperous economy."

The president said that the battle against extremism was "only one element of our strategic environment and cannot define America's engagement with the world."

The report also stressed areas like energy independence and climate change as important security matters that must be part of an overall security strategy.
