In this interview I am talking to Steve Hearn an artist that works creating caricatures of his victims, I mean customers. LOL. His business is weddings, drawing the bride, groom and guests. Caricatures that are drawn by Steve anytime, anywhere, both indoors and outdoors, Steve can be there to draw and entertain for you and your guests! Caricatures are great fun! A Caricature makes for the perfect memento!

Steve also does his thing at business events and lately has been using the iPad to draw people and entice them to visit the stand of the business. He also uses his iMac for his photography as well as for his art work. He tells me he is more of an entertainer than an artist because he tells bad jokes as he is drawing people at the weddings.

Drawing on the iPad

Recently he has bought an iPad and is using the iPad to draw with an application called ArtStudio. I have bought it and I will be doing a review of it on the Amazing iPad website soon. I have given it a bit of a try already and it looks pretty good.

Backing up your data is important

During the interview Steve confessed to not backing up his data and was happy to be told off severely for this terrible omission in the life of a Mac geek. I put him on to the idea of using DropBox for some off site storage and implored him to get a hard drive at least twice the size of the drive in the iMac to be able to use with Time Machine. The price of drives is so low now that there is now excuse really to not back up. In his defence he could say that he did try with the Time Capsule from Apple and had difficulties, but that is known to have problems and it is certainly better to plug in a USB or Firewire drive directly and run Time Machine. I also would recommend to use SuperDuper with another drive once a week and keep that data off site too.

What do you do to back up your data?

Here is the full interview of Karl Sasso, You can see the show not for this podcast in the Video20Q category on Answer20Q. Full Show notes

Kurt has been podcasting since 2008 and his topic of interest and expertise is Web Comics
He has interviewed people like David Reddick who created the Legend of Bill and Star Trek comics
Phil Foglio and many other comic artists.

This version of the podcast is the short version concentrating on the video end of things. There is another podcast that is quite a bit longer in which Kurt talks more about the worlrd of comics.

The reason that Kurt is being featured on the Video20Q podcast is because he told me some of hos plans to extend his podcast with video and is going to do the lone gun video interviews at a comic convention taking place in Chicago. Well not quite lone gun as he will have a friend helping him out with the video. He has an inexpensive JVC camera and will be interviewing artists at the show.

Kurt likes the manga and anime influence on comics is a manga fan, comics such as Dragon Ball but grew up with the Marvel style also

We also talk a bit about comic influenced movies such as, Sin City – Frank Miller
Watchmen – which I have not seen yet but Kurt reckons is too long, dry and painful to watch.
Kick ass Movie – story based on comics

Moving from tape to a hard drive camera bought a JVC for 600 dollar with a 80 gb HD
He is working with a friend called mike to record the interviews at the comic conventions
Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame will be at the event also.
Kurt is an Audacity user for the editing of audio, he tells me that he loves the Mac and may think of getting one for when he needs to do the video editing. Kurt has been known to make really long podcasts – up to 3 or 4 hours, he was using Talkshoe for the podcsasting but the quality was bad – still uses it for the hosting of the audio podcasts.

He was or is a World of Warcraft player and that got him into podcasting since 2008 has done 97 episodes, starting with WebComicPlanet.com

Here are a few links for those amongst you interested in the world of comics.
The Drunken Fools – created by Antoine Gagnon, this is the comic that I’m helping co-write based on my character submission Stubby the guardian angel skunk.

Web Comic Planet run by Byron Wilkins it’s a combination collective site run by fellow webcomic creators and links through a database over 2200 webcomic sites. This site also has a batch of tutorials and processes for up and coming webcomic authors and artists from veterans in their fields.

1977 The Comic – is Byron Wilkins actual webcomic site. About 1977 in Chicago loosely based on his life.

Danielle Corsetto, wonderful person and very active in the community

Penny Arcade These two are pretty much the godfathers of Webcomics. They didn’t start the community but they have been the most consistent and successful at it.

Eldon Cowgur created this and I’ll let you decide what you think about Astray 3.

Devils Panties – Jeannie Breeden consistently updates every single day without fail for many many years.

Johnny Saturn created by Scott Story This comic could easily rival DC and Marvel

<itunes:summary>Here is the full interview of Karl Sasso, You can see the show not for this podcast in the Video20Q category on Answer20Q.

Johnny Saturn created by Scott Story This comic could easily rival DC and Marvel</itunes:summary>

I have known Frank since we were at art college together. He went to Stoke to study Fine Art and I went to Leeds to study Furniture Design and then Fine Art. We have travelled to Germany together to work in the summer vacations in the Becks Bier Brewery in Bremen. We both had German girlfriends at the same time. Loads of funny stories to tell since 1980 to the point where the families have grown up and he is living in Wales and I am in Spain.

I have always been impressed with Franks’ dedication to his painting and his art. I went off in the direction of using art for a sign business while Frank kept at his painting. When making the visit to his house a few times over the years his house would always be full of paintings. When he came with his family to Ireland to visit me he would spend much of the time walking with a box of paints under his arm. I have some of those paintings still.

Frank has been featured on Welsh television, and has had numerous exhibitions of his work. Seeing as his family is all into art he has had a family exhibition when his wife and two young daughters exhibited paintings too. I love the paintings by Esme also. The family sold some of their work alongside Franks’ sales.

This interview was recorded here in Spain just after a drawing session in my living room. They were taking it in turns to be the model, my son Jack included, who is also at art college. It is all a family thing. I put the sound clips from the interview on top of of some video I shot on a trip to to make some drawings of the local landscape.

Painting isn’t just for artists anymore.

Photographers nowadays are interested in turning their digital photos into paintings in Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop.

And now Painting for Photographers, published by Artistry Books, shows both the art lessons and software steps for transforming photos into works of art.

Written and illustrated by Karen Sperling, one of the world’s foremost Painter authorities, having penned the first several Painter manuals and three previous Painter books, Painting for Photographers is the first art book for photographers.

It starts with a look at the art concepts that photographers need to know to paint their photos and describes the materials needed to create art, in this case, the software program tools and features, in addition to Wacom tablets.

Next, Painting for Photographers provides step-by-step instructions and four-color illustrations for creating paintings in Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop from popular photo subjects, including portraits, landscapes and pets, covering various styles of art, including oils, watercolors and pastels.

Additionally, Painting for Photographers shows how to paint with traditional acrylics and oils on top of the digital artwork after it’s printed to canvas.

Painting for Photographers appeals to everyone from professional photographers who would like to sell paintings to their clients to hobbyists who are interested in painting photos of their kids and grandkids to graphic designers, illustrators, animators, web art creators and fine artists who would like to use photos as the basis for their artwork.

A book trailer video about Painting for Photographers is on view at Youtube:

Photo20Q a blog and podcast where we will find out about how photographers do their stuff. We will talk about the taking and making of the pictures. The editing and art side of working with images, and the software we use to do it.

Famous and well known or enthusiastic amateur, who cares, let’s have a mix and talk to the real people making images for whatever purposes. We will make it inclusive and not exclude photographers. There is always something to learn when we get down to the nitty gritty.

20 questions will be asked and they will be the entry point to find out about that person and what drives him or her to point the lens at whatever subject matter.

Welcome to Artist 20 Questions

The idea of this site is to talk to artists and find out what they are doing. There is going to be a podcast published in which I will interview artists and get some background and try to get a notion of what they are doing artistically.

Hopefully I can ask some sensible and probing questions to get to the artistic nub of it. Show off some of the work and find out about the hopes for the future as artists.

We will talk about the business of being an artist and getting the eyballs in front of the work as well as the critical acclaim when it is due.

The plan will be that it will be published as a podcast once a month with other items being slotted into the blog in between episodes. We can have comment on gallery visits, and I will be pleased to get reviews by guest bloggers, writers. The scope of the site is Art, design, sculpture, photography, illustration and videography, so mainly the visual arts, but not confined to that. No reason why we can’t talk to writers for example.

Thanks for taking the time to read the blog and why not suggest people that would be candidates for being interviewed on the Podcast.
