About Michael:

Michael Mapes was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and received an MFA from University of Illinois in 1992.

Mapes is interested in creative science. His installations are created carefully dissected photographs which he reconstructs to once again represent the original image.

Each final piece is made up of thousands of individual specimens consisting of dissected photographs and genetic information about the subject in the form of hair, fingernails, scent, eyelashes, fingerprints, makeup, handwriting and breath. The representations of his subjects are dissected and then reconstructed through artistic interpretation invoking entomological, forensic and artistic methods.

Joseph Crone graduated from the Herron School of Art and Design in the summer of 2010, focusing on the artistic delivery of the human figure and mind. While his attention to visual detail is in a constant state of evolution, the growth of conceptual intensity is his central concern.

Heavily inspired by Film Noir, Crone uses realistic technical drawing to explore intense human experience, often reflecting moments of hazy nostalgia or nightmarish delusions.

Margarita Georgiadis was born in Sydney in 1968.

She paints as if writing a book. Her work is a record of life which finds resonance through its unfolding. Each of these paintings relate to her complete oeuvre, but they also singularly explore a particular period or facet of experience that is crystallized by its title and gives a sense of episode or chapter similar to that of a vignette in a narrative.

Her methodology draws on the autobiographical, but she appreciates that the personal is also universal. Her work functions as an enactment of our human impulse for philosophical exploration. Guided by writings from physics to psychology, her investigations invariably traverse a diversity of realms before the physical process of painting provides an opportunity to elucidate the relationship between thought and emotion.

The act of creation triggered by the artist’s research then finds momentary resolution in its expression on the canvas. It is only on reflection though, when artist and viewer are one, that it is possible to grasp what has been learned.

Sara Zin was born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in New York. She earned a BFA from University of Washington, Seattle, after exploring various disciplines, from printmaking and sculpture to illustration, painting, and design.

Her self-portraiture focuses on personal identity – something she struggled to come to terms with after graduating. To this day, her work is a process of documenting her private thoughts and ideas. Zin aims to inspire her viewer to become more introspective as well.

Questions such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What’s in a look?’ have resulted in a patchwork style of colors and shapes. Her process is a meditative exercise in breaking apart features and then reassembling them into new structures and forms, infused with feelings, thoughts and impressions.

Rumor has it he began his life as a burrowing freshwater larva; toothless, with rudimentary eyes, and a taste for microorganisms.

Ortiz transformed into an adult human through metamorphosis. It involved a radical rearrangement of internal organs, development of eyes and transformation from a mud-dwelling filter feeder into an efficient swimming parasite and sexual tyrannosaurus.

He draws influence from the dead shells of insect vessels ravaged by parasitic cordyceps, naturally careful not to inhale the deadly strings of ascospores created by the flask-shaped perithecia.

Her diminutive paper creations inhabit the territory between sculpture and collage. Her Matchbook Landscapes project started with a handful of promotional old matchbooks inherited from her grandfather-in-law. Charles first finds the origin of each matchbook on Google Maps and then makes a pencil sketch depicting this location on the inside cover of the matchbook.

These drawings takes about two hours to complete. Sometimes the places advertised on the matchbooks are still in business even after decades have passed, others are under new ownership and names, and others still have been torn down and replaced by parking lots or highway expansion programs.

She is drawn to matchbooks as a subject and canvas because while they were once commonly distribute to promote a business, they are now vintage items rarely seen except for in antique stores and junk drawers.

Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery received an MFA with first class honors from Edinburgh College of Art and is currently based in London.

Since 2005 he has focused chiefly on his Words in the City at Night project, echoing the Situationist concept of détournement and hijacks advertising space in the city, often illegally. Montgomery covers illuminated advertising billboards with austere black posters with white letters, which assume the color of the ad posters underneath and steals their light.

His texts are part poetry, part an enquiry into our collective unconscious. They are intended to be encountered by commuters who don’t know they are art, and an attempt to describe in public space what it feels like to live now. He has also made a series of hijacked or altered neon signs with the text poignantly altered, and since 2008 he has made sculptures that use the medium of recycled sunlight. These sculptures hold the sunlight of the day in solar cells and recycle it at night.

Montgomery has a 1st Class honors degree in painting and an MFA from Edinburgh College of Art and he has been the Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas where his work is in the permanent collection.

It sometimes requires perching twenty feet above a flat expanse of the marsh or lying belly down in the mud. Her painted collages re-interpret landscape painting and deal with the tensions and dichotomies in our depiction of the natural world and our relationship to it.

Shaw finds that movement of her paint and ink mix, when it is poured, resembles natural phenomena such as lava, landslides, or avalanches.

Once the paint is dry, she looks within the paint pour for shapes such as tree branches, cliffs or mountains, to cut up and use in her collage. The collage is finished with airbrushing.

Initially, Borer was focused chiefly figurative painting, drawing, and three-dimensional work made of polyester and electrical light, but since 1991 he has using 3D computer graphics to design his work.

Jessica Dunegan was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1977.

Her subjects look solid viewed from afar, but upon closer inspection are comprised of suspended, chaotic lines, with the aim of capturing the animated form of her every subject and its imperfections.

Dunegan paints using a mixture of epoxy resin and acrylic paint. Tubes of paint are emptied directly into a layer of liquid resin so that the opaque strands of paint remain on top of the transparent resin.

Once the initial layer dries, she repeats the process many times to create physical dimension. The result is a unique and organic representation of movement and depth.

David Mach studied at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art then at the Royal College of Art in London.

His style is based on assemblages of mass-produced found objects. These include magazines, vicious teddy bears, newspapers, car tires, matchsticks and coat hangers. Many of his installations are assembled in public spaces and exist for only a limited time.

In the early 1980s, Mach started to produce some smaller-scale works assembled from unstruck matchsticks. These commonly took the form of human or animalistic heads and masks, with the colored match heads arranged to construct the surface. He often ignites his match pieces as a form of performance art. The first time this happened, it was accidental.

Following several shows and public installations, Mach was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1988. In 2000 he joined the Royal Academy of Arts as Professor of Sculpture.

Tomohiro Inaba is a young artist who finished his graduate studies in 2010.

He is attracted to iron as a material among other reasons because it begins to rust and decay upon contact with air, practically the moment it is created. For some his two-dimensional work he has used heat-sensitive paper, a likewise ephemeral material.

Inaba often incorporates everyday objects into his work. His Straight Grass series consisted of household refuse exhibited in bespoke frames.

Though made from solid iron wire, many of his sculptures appear freely woven. Their foundation is an anatomically correct solid form but it shoots off in incredibly complex tangles of steel wire that manifest themselves like violent pencil scribbles.

Makoto Tojiki received a degree in industrial design engineering from Kinki University in 1998 and has since devoted his personal time to experimenting with light.

In 2003, Tojiki embarked on his career as a full-time artist. Light as his primary medium of expression. Initially he produced only small works intended for production, but he found this limiting and eventually branched out into artistic images of objects constructed from light, such as well as jewelry made of diamonds.

His recent No Shadow series is inspired by the interconnectedness of light and shadow – how they can be manipulated and controlled. Tojiki starts by breaking down the light and the shadow to capture the essence of their symbiosis. The result is images as ephemeral and enigmatic as shadow itself.

Bruno Perillo received a BFA from School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2002. His is currently based in New York City.

He is influenced by Italian Baroque and Nineteenth Century French Academies. These stylistic approaches combine the best in realist painting, adding a warm palette and chiaroscuro lighting harking back to the Italians.

John Bernhard

John Bernhard was born in Switzerland and traveled around North America extensively before finally settling in Houston, Texas.

The prevailing themes of his work are climate change and planet pollution. Bernhard uses NASA archive images taken by astronauts from the International Space Station and adjusts their contrast and the brightness. Then, he superimposes portraits of children he has taken himself. The contrast between their faces and these perilous landscapes is intended to convey his message about the way we are mistreating our planet.

Bernhard has been a photographer for over two decades now and continues to devote all his energy to bringing them together to enhance the meaning of his photographs by way of visual interplay. He has authored seven monographs, including Nudes Metamorphs, Nicaragua, Diptych, Evanescence, Drift, China. His most recent book, Body Work, is a retrospective on nudes.

He has worked at art since he was twelve, and was among the youngest artists to have been showcased at Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

His proudest commission is a sculpture he made for the Holocaust Museum of St. Petersburg, Florida of a Tasmanian devil is tearing the roof off of a boxcar, releasing one million butterflies, one for each of the children who lost their lives in the Holocaust.

Butterflies are a continued theme in his work and every piece he makes includes at least one, sometimes visible and other times hidden. Kracov regards it as his signature.

He describes glass as a seductive as well as challenging and particularly unforgiving medium. Its ability to hold elements in suspension, bend light, and layer color in three dimensions, not to mention its mallability in a liquid state, is what first attracted Patchen to glass.

His latest work is an exploration of detailed patterns, colors and transparency, all created through multi-layered cane and murrine. Each project begins with meticulous planning and designing of colors and patterns. He starts by pulling the cane and murrine, then carefully composes these elements to design the final work, all days prior to blowing it.

Patchen is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors at Public Glass and former member of the Glass Alliance of Northern California’s board of directors. In addition to being exhibited nationwide, his work is also collected in Canada and Europe.

Ramona R. Mitchell received an MFA from University of Kassel, Kassel, Germany. Prior to that she studied in Athens, Georgia, and Cairo, Egypt.

Mitchell describes painting in philosophical terms as an intuitive journey on which one is always reconsidering the definitions of “truth” and authenticity. She has no interest in interpreting the visible world on behalf of the viewer, and hopes that the viewer will make his own associations for a unique experience.
