Local artist Roger Goode will have a number of his oil paintings on display at the “Summer Comfort” show in the Monadnock Community Hospital Healing Arts Gallery.

The exhibit features the work of artists Roger Goode, Laurie McGowan, Padma Pali, Michael Reilly, Edith Tuttle, and Lauren Welch. The works in the show cover a range of styles and mediums, including paintings, handcrafted jewelry, and photography.

 There will be an Opening Reception on Thursday, May 9th, from 4:30 to 6pm. All are welcome to come meet the artists and enjoy the show. 

The paintings of Roger Goode reflect his lifelong love for nature and wildlife. He takes particular pleasure in painting animals and trying to capture the expressiveness in their eyes and the story they have to tell.

Join me on Saturday, December 1st from 11am to 3pm for an Open House opening of the Six-Pack Art Show. This will be our “soft opening” of the show. An official reception will be held on First Friday, December 7th from 5pm to 7pm, and will include music, beer, pretzels, and other refreshments

The exhibit features the work of artists Brian Cohen, Lee Dunholter, Michael Havey, Bob Marrone, Kevin Whitfield, and myself. 

We will be at The Gallery at Depot Square - 20 Depot Street, Peterborough NH 03458, 3rd floor. Enter through door next to Hobbs Jewelers.

The Gallery at Well Sweep in Hillsborough, NH is open for it’s summer season, and included in the 2017 summer exhibition will be six of my recent paintings.

The Well Sweep Gallery has been a destination in the Historic Hillsborough Center for many years. They are open summer weekends and by appointment. Be sure to check their Events page for information on special events throughout the summer.

Painting “Ala Prima” (in one sitting) has it’s joys… but sometimes working into wet paint doesn’t go quite as smoothly as one would like. Particularly on these smaller panels. So sometimes the answer is just to put them aside to dry and then have at them again another day.

Of course, that will take some discipline as well… Given that I seem to enjoy starting paintings a lot more than I do finishing them.

I began these three this week. Let’s see how soon I finish them.

Both of these paintings are from this week, but neither is finished yet… I don’t think. Even though Tulips No.3 is signed, I may let it dry and then revisit it in a few days. I’m gonna sleep on it.

This is where you get to weigh in. Should I let them be, or fuss a little more. I just never know when to quit.

Who doesn’t love a donkey? I think they are about the most endearing farm animal I can think of. If it wasn’t just totally impractical, I’d love to have one here.

I’m a little surprised with myself that I haven’t painted one before now. But this one certainly won’t be the last.

After I completed Fresh Fish No.7, I was left with a fresh palette and a small amount of time in the day, so I pulled out a small 4" x 4" panel and played with this small painting of a damselfly. The jury is out as to whether I take that one any further or not.

It was a somewhat scattered week and some of my painting time was broken up into little chunks. So I pulled out an older fish painting that needed some work and finished it up.

I’m back in the studio and the painting is going well. But the writing has always felt like a chore at the end of the day. So I’ll be brief…

I’m finding butterflies on flowers to be a good fallback subject for me. The colors and patterns are endlessly entertaining and it’s hard not to feel inspired. I just hope that you like them as much as I do.

I’ve actually got a few other things to post from this week, but I’m too tired and hungry now to add it all now. So I’ll post an update this weekend.

OK… My apologies for the bad pun. But I really do need to ask you to bear with me now. I haven’t painted or posted for quite a while—at least a month I think. 

Trying to “make it” as an artist has been taking it’s toll on me, so I just had to take a sort of mental health break and turn my attention to other things. Bees, chickens, woodworking… whatever I could do to keep myself busy and distracted.

So… now I’m back in the studio. Determined to keep moving forward and try to make this work. I’m not quite ready to flip burgers or bag groceries, and Wal-Mart won’t be here for at least a year, so my career as a greeter is on hold.

I have about 18 panels sketched and prepared to paint. So hopefully you’ll be hearing more from me in the days and weeks ahead.

The Mill Brook Gallery will be having it’s annual Spring/Summer exhibit beginning in May, and I have been invited to include some of my recent paintings.

The exhibit will run from May 4 – August 27, and there will be an opening reception on Thursday, May 4, from 5-7 pm. The gallery is located just outside of Concord at 236 Hopkinton Road, Concord, NH 03301 

This is a wonderful opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the work that will be on display. It's a wonderful setting. Please tell your friends, and I hope to see you there.

Sixteen small panels of Morning Glories… Sixteen! it seemed like a good idea when I started it. I’ve been in a slump, and I thought that a project like this might help me shake it. I’m not sure if it did or not… but at least it got me through the last of our extended winter here.

I’ll be posting these for sale in a few days. As soon as they are all completely dry. My plan is to sell them individually, but to offer a special price for sets of four.

Now onto something else. Anything but Morning Glories…

I’ve been silent here for a bit, but I’m still at it in the studio. 

I’ve been working on a series of small, 4”x4” panels of Morning Glories, and I didn’t want to post until I had the full set started.

Most of these are fairly close. But I want to bring them all up to an even finish before I make them available. I’ll probably offer them individually, and in sets of four—maybe at a discounted rate for the sets.

I’ll do another post when they’re all done and posted for sale. Until then, enjoy this little taste of summer.

I want to play around with my painting style for a while and work a little more expressively. Of course, the first question was… What to paint? As I found myself agonizing and obsessing over this one simple step, I needed to just let go and dig in.

So I picked up an old self-portrait that I had already started a few years back and had at it. I was really unhappy with the existing painting and it was destined for the trash anyway. So that gave me the permission I needed to allow myself to just friggin’ PLAY.

I can’t say that I’m thrilled with where it’s going just yet… But at least I’m attacking it in a way that may lead the way to some more expressive work down the road a bit.

Unfortunately, I neglected to make a photo of the portrait before I started in today… So you can't see just how bad it was. But maybe that's just as well.

I’m in a rut… No, I don’t mean all the fish paintings. I mean I’m just in a rut. How I've been working, and the kind of painting I do… 

Painting every day—or at least as often as I can—is great. But it’s also easy to get into a pattern that way and lose the feel of spontaneity (not my strong suit anyway…)

So for the next few weeks, I’m going to try to shake things up a little. Change the way I work, and maybe even my style of painting. 

I’m not sure exactly what that means just yet… And it may take some false starts and a little re-wiring in my head. I have some pretty deeply entrenched habits.

But now that I’ve posted this, I need to follow through, yeah? So you get to tag along on my little adventure.

I prepared the drawing for this panel months ago in anticipation of winter… And then winter actually hit, and the subject wasn’t quite so appealing anymore. I longed for warmer, sunnier times.

Now that winter is nearly over (fingers crossed), I feel like I can face it again. 

I like the nearly monochromatic nature of the image, and the challenge of working out the values to bring it to life. This is a larger panel than I’ve been working on lately… 12.25” x 22”, so it will probably take a little longer to complete.

Barring any more snowstorms to sour my enthusiasm, I hope to have it done soon. Stay tuned…

I love that I am painting full-time now. I really do. There isn’t anything I would rather be doing. That said, it just isn’t always easy.

Painting is a very lonely pursuit, and it can be easy to lose sight of where the work is going, or if it’s any good. Sometimes it’s a challenge just to step up to the easel.

But the only choice I have is to persist… Keep going and work until the slump is behind me.

For today I chose an autumn landscape… Just to have some of my favorite colors on the palette. Not finished yet… But close, I think.

With all the snow here last week, I managed to strain my lower back doing snow removal and I’ve been moving a bit slow as result.

But I still managed to get into the studio a number of days and started a few new paintings. The theme was fish… lots of fish. I don’t know what it is about these subjects that appeals to me so much. I guess—apart from the great color and patterns—I sort of like the challenge of making art from something as grotesque as dead fish.

I’m trying to learn a little more about business. I guess it’s a bit like teaching a fish to sing… But I have to try.

So for the next few weeks, I’ll be offering a number of my paintings for sale. Hopefully an opportunity for you, if you’ve had your eye on something.

And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, maybe an opportunity for a special gift for a loved one.

I haven’t done a portrait in a long time, and the mood caught me. 

This painting is of a dear friend and fellow artist. Her striking presence and brilliant red hair in this photo was irresistible to me and I had to try to capture it. It’s a rough and quick beginning, but I hope to do it justice.

The background is an interpretation of one of her paintings.
