Give It A Whirl

At the end of 2025, I decided to try my hand at creative writing. After a quick Google search on how to structure a short story, I mapped out the setting, the characters, and the plot. Then I began scribbling onto the paper.

Much like creating visual art, the story seemed to pour out of me onto the page. The process felt completely natural, but it was also all-consuming. Naughty as it may sound, I even started skipping my strict yoga practice because I was afraid I might lose the thread of inspiration.

My sister Celia, one of the most avid readers in the family, generously corrected my spelling and grammar before my 300,000-word manuscript was shared with a few select friends and family. To everyone who has read it, thank you.

So what is it about? Why did I write it? And who is it for?

I hope those questions spark a little curiosity. The title, SWAMPLAND, may reveal more than I intend. For now, I will simply leave you with a short excerpt from one chapter, along with a handful of the accompanying illustrations.

I have not illustrated Samuel the seal pup yet, but I hope you enjoy meeting a few of the other characters.

“Cafe visitor causes heart attack”. Everyone knew of this news story. The problem was it had given fur seals a bad name. Samuel seal pup hadn't meant any harm when he padded through the back door. The truth was he was in heaven. It had rained so much that his usual play pen had become much bigger. The water temperature certainly had been fluctuating lately, but 1080 corkscrews, and air-to-fakie to surf-break-wakies were so much easier to pull off with the extra absorption room. He had never meant to give anyone a FRIGHT but the lure of the ‘half pipe’ water race was TOO much to resist.

The tabloids had named him Samuel. Whatever that sound meant. So Samuel seal pup it was. He had made the wrong turn and had ended up in the Tāne bathroom, inside the first toilet cubicle. How was he to know he would end up there? He was just after some salmon. For some reason the delectable fish had changed their pathways and weren't swimming through the colony's usual fishing spots, and cafes apparently magically served it. “So where is the ark! ark! Is the kitchen?” This cafe did not seem at all majestic.

Birds, Not Rugby

One of my favourite things about travelling is talking with people along the way. Someone will often say “Kia ora” with great pride after mastering our national te reo Māori greeting, then confidently offer up “rugby” or “birds” as possible conversation topics. I usually steer away from rugby as quickly as possible, but our wildlife is always a welcome place to begin.

Aotearoa is known around the world for the diversity of our bird life, and Fiona Pardington’s photographs are among the most powerful examples of honouring, respecting, and cherishing these taonga species. Her work carries both beauty and weight, drawing you in with quiet intensity.

Representing Aotearoa, New Zealand at the 61st International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Taharaki Skyside is a breathtaking series of large scale bird portraits created from taxidermied specimens held in museum collections across Aotearoa and Australia. Some images are haunting in the way the birds meet your gaze, reminding us that several of these species are now extinct. Against dark backdrops, each bird is given a remarkable sense of individuality and presence, as though their mauri has been gently restored through her lens.

For those of us back home, the exhibition can only be experienced online. I was one of the 241 people who missed out on the opportunity to be among the ten attendants selected to support the Venice pavilion. Congratulations to Fiona, her creative team, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, and Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa for representing Aotearoa with such extraordinary work.

Taharaki Skyside feels both deeply personal and nationally significant. Fiona Pardington’s work is not only visually stunning, it is profoundly moving, reminding us of the fragility, dignity, and enduring presence of these treasured species.

13th Annual Autumn Exhibition

Elemental Series - EARTH, WATER, AIR and FIRE

I’m absolutely delighted that Elemental has been selected for the 13th Annual Autumn Exhibition, on show through March 2026. Expertly curated by Melissa Reimer, this year’s exhibition promises to be another inspiring celebration of art in nature, and I’m thrilled to be part of it for a second year.

Elemental began in Aotearoa as a line drawing series of fun, fictional supernatural, deities/atua- like characters representing earth, water, air, and fire.

“After travelling through Nepal pre-pandemic I began practising yoga on a regular basis and I loved how I felt. I met a highly skilled teacher on my return to Aotearoa and began to incorporate a short morning meditation and found the space between thoughts when the mind is quiet is a fascinating feeling to try and put to paper. I grew as an observer both inward and outward, letting the experience change the way I drew”.

Over the past year, this body of work has grown through the support of many generous collaborators ranging from technicians, engineers, programmers, builders, family, friends, and mentors.

Fabricated from marine-grade stainless steel (316), this material is resistant to corrosion and weathering, ensuring longevity and minimal environmental impact. The series explores the interplay between nature, technology, and the environment.

For the first time at Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden, the complete series will be presented together in exhibition. Earth, Water, Air, and Fire will stand side by side as I have always imagined. Seeing them united feels both grounding and expansive, a quiet milestone in my practice.

Elemental has marked a welcome creative shift, moving my work into unpredictable territory and encouraging me to trust instinct as much as intention. The sculptures sit confidently among the kānuka, their forms alive against the rich dark backdrop. Taking onboard the curators advice the tall black plinths recede gently into the landscape, allowing the lines to extend into the surrounding deep green environment.

It is a privilege to present the complete series and to offer collectors and emerging enthusiasts alike the opportunity to engage with this important body of work at a defining moment in its evolution.

My gratitude also goes out to Peter Joyce and Annabel Menzies-Joyce, co-founders of the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden. To Melissa Reimer, the curator; and to all who continue to nurture this extraordinary space for art and community.

Installing Elemental

Returning to the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden for a second time is a joy, and I feel deeply grateful for the journey that has led me here. Elemental has been selected as part of the 13th Annual Autumn Exhibition, running through March 2026, beautifully curated by Melissa Reimer.

This has been a very different kind of art adventure. The artworks incorporate technology, and I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with a group of highly skilled individuals: Roberto Carvalho, Michaela Lang, Liam Paterson, Damian Hanrahan, Emmanuel Mururi, and, more recently, Vincent Pancha and James Huson. Together, we have brought Elemental to fruition.

This sculpture series explores the importance of inner peace through connections with the elements. Here are a few photographs capturing the process and the people involved.

It’s 2026 and what better way to hop into the new year than to celebrate another artist's work.

What do you get when you combine rabbit poo, sewing machine magic, and plastic waste recycling? The amazing mind of New Zealand - born artist Anna Borrie, that’s what!

I’ve known Annie since we were five years old. We were both whirlwind children with copious amounts of energy. Our inherited work ethic and shared enjoyment of making meant we had a lot to contribute, using art as our language. Anna has always been a greenie. We lived rurally, I remember climbing an enormous tree together at Whitecliffs camp and taking a photograph at the very top. After looking through various boxes in the garage I couldn't locate the photo but trust me, not much has changed. We still both hug trees.

Anna has produced some fantastic work over the years, exploring a wide variety of mediums that I wanted to share. Rabbit poo pellet bra with LED lighting made the World of Wearable Arts Finalist of 2012.

Not to mention the work with Wairarapa’s Trust House as the 2014 ANZAC Fellow: a 10-metre harakeke cloak unveiled on ANZAC Day. Made with aroha and in collaboration with NZ Pacific Studio, the project was supported by many contributors from the local community, including descendants of the fallen soldiers honoured by the Bridge.

Her latest projects include dabbling in music and experimenting with more temporary installation works, such as the Hybrid Flower series, consisting of feijoa flowers made from food wrappers and cigarette butts. Another work, Wrapped in Plastic, is an installation made from recycled plastic that imitates the exterior of an entire pharmacy shopfront, created for C.A.L.L.E Lavapiés 2019 in Madrid.

In June this year, I had the pleasure of spending time touring the streets and galleries, including PhotoESPAÑA. Annie carried a lomography camera, snapping photographs every so often as we explored (read more about our adventures on a previous post).

It goes without saying that Anna has achieved a great deal whilst going through some scary health problems in recent years.

Her idea had been brewing for some time and has recently begun to come to fruition: the A Letter To An Artist project. It is a way of sharing solidarity, starting conversations, and opening up dialogue with creative minds who have left a lasting impression. Anna is a wonderful writer, so the letters promise to be an enjoyable read or two. Stay tuned for new letters, released monthly (ish).

Summer is in full throttle, Christmas has passed, and New Year’s is on the horizon. Indigestion seems to be a widespread part of the holiday experience. Eating is certainly one of my favourite aspects of this time of year, and it feels like a good moment to reflect on some highlights.

From an art perspective, adventures through Southern Spain, Lisbon, and London stand out most. Visiting so many fabulous galleries and museums, and walking the streets of these breathtaking cities while taking in the vast array of public art, has been a lot to digest - but a necessary cultural injection.

Return After A European Sojourn

My collection from various art experiences in Europe

Coming back after travel is often both difficult and exciting for me. Settling into a completely different rhythm and accepting the comedown can be challenging, yet it’s wonderful to reconnect with people and pets again. Getting back on my snowboard with my sisters or slipping into the water for a soak feels fantastic.

Playing around with perspective

Losing my dad almost three years ago was followed by a number of consecutive losses. For me, losing a parent heightened my sense of life’s fragility, especially concerning my mum, who features in the photograph above. She lies peacefully, like a precious sleeping giant, beside the sky drawing, Water, on the Lake Wanaka waterfront.

Sharing time with her and developing the Elemental photographic series has been extraordinary. We’ve headed off on some challenging expeditions. She’s been a champion, even when the locations have been slippery, prickly, gritty, hot, cold, windy, wet, filthy, or downright obscure. These shoots demand a high level of physical fitness and often involve me rolling around with my chin literally in the dirt.

Many of the captures fail: the lighting, twigs, grasses, land gradient (honestly, most backdrops) interfere with the linear qualities of these pieces. It’s been harder than I anticipated.

I often have to remind myself to practice self-compassion. After heading home from a failed photography session, I feel like a dog with its tail between its legs. Since losing my beautiful cat Izzy, my current go-to is visiting my older sister’s Pomeranian, Ludo. After that essential dopamine hit and some yoga, I manage to hit reset.

Then, on the next shoot, I get lucky and take a photograph that lights me up. It captures the beauty of Lake Tekapo and its surrounding landscape while allowing the contrast of the line drawing to come through clearly.

The Blue Ted Effect

Pastel de nata! Yes, I love these Portuguese custard pastry delights. Starting the day with a flat white and an icing sugar, cinnamon-dusted dessert is both amazing and dangerous. I have eaten nine of these in three days. It's time to leave the country!

The UK has a strange sense of familiarity. I lived here for four years in my early to mid-twenties. After arriving in Luton, I quickly made plans to head to Shoreditch, a place with art, once so influential.

In the morning, I discovered the café below has none other than pastel de nata. I love how multicultural London is, and with that comes a gorgeous array of cuisine. I have to use all of my willpower to leave behind this newly developed morning ritual.

The heatwave has followed me over, and the Airbnb has no air conditioning. So, taking out my Canon EOS 850D in the evenings and early mornings is my best bet.

To my delight, I came across large-scale murals by artists Phlegm and Shepard Fairey. Graffiti writing is all around, and in areas like Allen Gardens, it feels magical. Bronze sculptures by Stik and D*Face blur categories to reveal how far the movement has come, a notable evolution.

I walked past the Truman Brewery and around Ely’s Yard. Memories of the face etched into the surface of the wall come back. I'm pleased to see a VHILS sculpture in the courtyard, perhaps an honoring of sorts, to where it all started. It's nice to witness and, in a way, on a personal level, it’s a full-circle moment.

Another place to avoid this extreme heat is in museums and art galleries. 'Sing Siren', a solo exhibition of Kiwi artist Frances Upritchard’s work, is on at Kate MacGarry. Some details of these sculptures pull me closer and closer, revealing fantastical strangeness.

I chat with James, who gives me the New Exhibitions 2025 Summer Guide, which leads me to explore: Hayward Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Barbican, Kenwood House, Camden Art Centre, Hales, Lisson Gallery, The National, Clarendon Fine Art Hampstead, Phillida Reid, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Drawing School, Sadie Coles HQ, Serpentine, The Showroom, Stolen Space, White Cube, Natural History Museum, and more.

It was, in all honesty, overwhelming, in the best way. Japan’s Yoshitomo Nara retrospective is an unexpected highlight. My emotions are brought out. I have to leave one of the rooms as I begin to cry. I have no words, it’s all feeling. It reminds me of my sister, who I miss. A brilliant show!

Other impactful works include The Rainbow Body by Ugo Rondinone, The Ways of the Underworld Are Perfect by Tau Lewis at Sadie Coles HQ, and Thoughts in the Roots by Giuseppe Penone at the Serpentine, featuring the technique of frottage on a grand scale.

In between all of this, I found myself living in Hampstead with Kiwi artist Amanda Newall. She offers kindness, dogs, and a library of thoughtful recommendations on what to read and where to go.

It was, of course, her work 'Blue Ted', created during her 2020 residency at Joya: AiR, that inspired this overseas journey in the first place. I first encountered Blue Ted at the Dummies and Doppelgängers exhibition at the Christchurch Art Gallery, soon after, I applied for the same residency.

Hampstead was never in my plans, but life, as we know, is unpredictable. I’m now a regular at Kenwood House and its gardens, chatting to locals and tourists alike. And, reminding myself this is a working holiday, I’ve been taking guerrilla-style photographs of my recent prototype ‘Earth’ sculpture in various situations.

My time in London has been both phenomenal and awful, sometimes at the same time. If you know, you know.

When the noise and congestion get too much, I make a beeline for the parks. These green health restorers offer massive trees, quiet moments, and conversations with crows, squirrels, and the occasional fox. It’s no surprise that ‘The Lion King’ was my first West End musical choice, sensational!

Beyond the “arts,” my favourite thing about London is the acceptance, the freedom to be yourself, loudly and proudly. Inspired by this energy, I decided it was time for a change. Booking an appointment with an Italian stylist in Shoreditch, she cut all of my hair off.

Ode To Alexandre And His Team

Cultural overwhelm are the words that spring to mind after my time in Spain and Portugal. I can't blog about everything from my European Art Adventure, but visiting VHILS Studio in Portugal and attending an exhibition opening at Galleria Underdogs were major highlights.

I made my way across the bridge towards Barreiro, where I was greeted by the lovely Catarina Jacques, who had taken time out of her busy schedule to show me around. Her role as Senior Operations and Production Manager is an important one.

Alexandre Farto’s works adorn the walls of the warehouse, showcasing many years of experimentation, some of which I’d seen before, mostly online. He’s a prolific artist and someone I’ve admired since accidentally coming across his art in Shoreditch, London, back in 2010.

Here’s how his method of working had a monumental impact on mine:

There was a face scratched into the surface of a wall. I thought it was fantastic, taking a printmaking technique like etching and turning it into street art. It felt like I had experienced something entirely new. I was both inspired and a little jealous. I wanted to create something that hadn’t been done before (pretty much impossible, right?!).

After hearing about the devastating earthquakes on BBC News from my studio in St Ives, I decided to move back to Ōtautahi, Christchurch in Aotearoa. At the University of Canterbury’s Fine Art School, I was taught a printmaking technique called the gesso release (thanks, Gail).

By combining this technique with my then-newly developed drawing style, I began making large-scale, backwards puzzles (you can definitely see the influence of photograffeur JR here).

Bringing these techniques into public spaces, I began brightening up areas in the city. That’s how my large-scale murals started in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Thanks, Alexandre!

Back to the tour… Catarina’s knowledge of the studio’s various processes is thorough. I met David Monteiro, who had just returned from a meeting, and he insisted I walk down to see 'Rostos'. I promptly set off to find this amazing mural.

I left the studio beaming with joy, filled with a sense of possibility and excitement.

The next morning, I eagerly headed to the photography exhibition 'Time Stands Still' by Jeff Wall at MAAT after admiring the architecture and rooftop garden. Continuing along the Tagus River, I came across the incredible 'Padrão dos Descobrimentos' monument. It was hot, so I devoured ice cream in Empire Square Garden before heading into MAC/CCB, where works by Moore, Dalí, Carrington and many more were right there in front of me!

On my final evening in Portugal, I was lucky to be invited to the 'Memória Material' exhibition opening at Galleria Underdogs. Although I didn’t get to meet Alexandre (he was on holiday), it truly felt like a dream come true. Every Portuguese person I met, except for one cab driver, was absolutely lovely. I’d go as far as saying I love Portugal and its exceptional people. Obrigada!

Art Residency With Joya: AiR

E kore au e ngaro, he kakano ahau I ruia mai i Rangiatea. I can never be lost, I am a seed sown from Rangiatea.

Travel has always been close to my heart. So is my connection to my homeland Aotearoa, New Zealand. The winds of life can whisk us away to unexpected places. Following a week soaking up the abundance of art in Madrid, including PHotoEspaña where I hoped to catch a spark to take with me into my residency with Joya: arte and ecología / AiR.

In the studio I have been working on a set of mixed media artworks that explore the four elements; tierra (earth), aire (air), agua (water), fuego (fire). I have worked experimentally and incorporated techniques that directly play with these elements, by collecting blanco clay, coffee and beetroot compost, conjuring air/bubbles, watercolour exploration and sourcing fire from a candle.

I have been blown away by my experience here. The generosity and knowledge that both Simon and Donna have shared has been phenomenal. To be working close to other artists from different corners of the globe has been eye opening and inspirational. Everyone produces such different work and yet we all share some similar values. What an incredibly special environment to be immersed in.

While these 2 dimensional artworks hold space on their own they are a complementary edition to my sculpture series “Elemental” that has been under development in Aotearoa. These prototype sculptures explore the importance of inner peace through elemental connections and depict the four elements as fun, fictional, atua-like deities, while leaving the viewer as the possible fifth element.

The process started as a simple line drawing, aimed to capture the space between thoughts experienced during meditation where the mind is quiet. For me this was an interesting feeling to try put to paper. Then, working with some wonderfully talented, highly skilled people and dabbling in art that combines technology and the mechanical, we have a rather fascinating outcome (see previous post to read about the people involved).

Stainless steel is a material that is resistant to weathering and corrosion. By showcasing the beauty of sustainable materials this series aims to inspire the viewer to reconsider their relationship with the environment and take action towards a greener future.

My connection and relationship with the sky has been rekindled. Both sunrise and sunset have been an integral part of my day. We have experienced the sun appearing like a ripe apricot and disappearing just the same. The thunderstorms and atmospheric cloud formations have been fascinating backdrops to photographically explore with the ‘Elemental’ sculptures series.

Most days the temperature is 30° plus; this desert environment is like nothing I have experienced. Frida the giant schnauzer and her best friend Fufu the goat make us laugh. There are bugs, birds, snails and a house visiting snake. I am both anxious and enlivened at the same time. While there are these challenges, I reflect on how lucky I am to be here, with gratitude to all of the people back home who have supported me to make this possible.

Qué Pasa Madrid

Hola, well I never expected to be here in Spain.

Madrid is a heat and culture shock. Where do I start?! The answer is Museo Del Prado. I head down Gran Via and are overwhelmed by the grandeur of the Cibeles Plaza. I have a tear in my eye; the architecture is that moving. I continue en route down Paseo de Prado under the trees and past the exquisite fountain. Art , in some capacity, is everywhere you look.

No one is allowed to take photographs inside this magnificent building. I have spent four hours perusing and also getting lost. Hieronymus Bosch's painting 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' has people crowding around and as soon as I see the triptych up close it becomes clear why. This artwork gives me the feeling that it could have been painted yesterday. It is timeless and still as relevant as ever, I love it!

Anna Borrie, a friend and fellow artist, tells me that the three must-sees are Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen which I promptly devour.

Anna is so switched on in regards to knowing what's on and where to go. My navigation anxiety immediately dissolves as we whiz about the city, jumping on and off the metro and buses; she is a wizard who can also speak fluent Spanish!

We visit various museums and galleries, including some photography expos during photoESPAÑA. I am introduced to a retrospective of Duane Michals which is absolutely fantastic.

12th Annual Autumn Exhibition

It's my first time exhibiting at the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden which has been a delight.

As a New Zealander I am naturally connected to our land. I love the idea conveyed in Māori pūrākau that humans, birds and trees talk to each other. Through this sculpture I aim to explore the importance of inner peace through elemental connections that engage with our communities in Te Waipounamu / South Island

Earth - Elemental Series

In modern life it is rather easy to fall into the demands of urban living, burying our heads into our iPhones and plethora of screens. While the digital age has many benefits in many areas including the art world I always feel immediately better if I take a walk outside through the trees or on the beach.

“Nurturing people to nature's inherent instructions was natural for our ancestors” writes Hinemoa Elder, in her book Aroha. The foundation of healing practices combines the natural elements in Native American, Chinese, Vedic, and Tibetan cultures. Sometimes these theories overlapped with mythology and were personified in deities. Individual philosophers as well as these different cultures had broadly varying explanations regarding their attributes and how they related to cosmology as well as noticeable phenomena.

I am an artist of Māori (Ngāti Raukawa), Dutch, English and Irish descent. I enjoy absorbing the culture around me and working through emotions while creating a personal visual language.

After travelling through Nepal pre-pandemic I began practising yoga on a regular basis and I loved how I felt. I met a highly skilled teacher on my return to Aotearoa and began to incorporate a short morning meditation and found the space between thoughts when the mind is quiet is a fascinating feeling to try and put to paper. I grew as an observer both inward and outward, letting the experience change the way I drew.

The sculpture and line drawings below are fun, fictional supernatural, deities/atua- like characters representing fire, earth, air, and water. Neil Dawson’s first public sculpture; Echo adopted line drawing in a sculptural capacity. Influenced by this, these “sky drawings” combine the interplay of nature, the environment and technology.

Elemental Series - Currently Under Development

'Earth' is the first of four prototype sculptures made out of the highest grade stainless steel; 316. This material is resistant to corrosion and weathering, ensuring longevity and minimal environmental impact. I have chosen a beautiful piece of local bluestone as a plinth.

The fifth element is you, the viewer, known as heart, wairua, other or space. Unlocking the experience as an individual whilst at the same time being part of the collective consciousness/body.

By showcasing the beauty of sustainable materials, these sculptures inspire viewers to reconsider their relationship with the environment and take action towards a greener future.

Installing Earth

My latest sculpture ‘Earth’ has been selected to be part of the 12th Annual Autumn Exhibition running through March 2025 at the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden curated by Melissa Reimer.

It's been quite a different type of art adventure. The artwork utilizes technology and I have enjoyed the help working with some highly skilled people; Roberto Carvalho, Michaela Lang, Liam Paterson, Damian Hanrahan, Renè Kempf, Nick Hills and Emmanuel Mururi together ‘Earth’ has come into fruition.

This sculpture explores the importance of inner peace through elemental connections.

Preliminary line drawings

A new year and time to share a change in direction.

After travelling through Nepal pre-pandemic I began practising yoga on a regular basis and I loved how I felt. Dummies And Doppelgängers is a brilliant exhibition curated by lead curator Felicity Milburn. I had the luxury to listen to her talk about Patricia Piccinini's 'Teenage Metamorphosis' from 2017. Piccinini is certainly an artist I admire. Her ability to disgust and intrigue the viewer at the same time is so fascinating.

Sun and Moon Drawings

Amidst the serene landscapes of Te Waipounamu, a newfound creative spark ignited within me.

The sun and the moon, celestial companions casting their ethereal glow upon the Earth, have become my muses in this artistic exploration. As I delved into this novel direction, a profound realization struck me - the moon, with its calming luminosity, revitalizes my spirit, while the sun's fiery presence, though majestic, sometimes leaves me feeling drained.

The enchanting landscapes of Banks Peninsula, offered me a front-row seat to nature's mesmerizing dance. The rhythmic repetition of patterns in the flora and fauna whispered tales of harmony and balance. This organic symphony translated effortlessly into my art, creating a tapestry where the sun and moon converge in perfect equilibrium.

In my artistic journey, I sought to capture the essence of duality - the yin and yang of celestial bodies. The sun, with its fierce intensity, juxtaposed against the moon's soothing radiance, creating a dynamic interplay between light and darkness, warmth and coolness. Through my drawings, each stroke of colour infused with emotions, mirroring the dichotomy of the sun’s vigour and the moon’s serenity.

Unexpected Treats

Visiting Josie Jay Martin's The Giants House was undeniably a moving experience. A much welcome escapism into another world full of colour and optimism.

Next stop was equally inspiring but very different; Hinewai Reserve. Having a cup of tea with local conservation hero and fellow tree hugger Hugh Wilson was quite lovely.

Exploring the beautiful mosaic of native forest, listening to bellbirds, tui, pīwakawaka and kererū along the way.

Below Hinewai's visitors centre and hut. The Maurice White Native Forest Trust have done a grand job planting native shrubs that serve as nurse canopies for regenerating native forest, pushing out extensive areas of gorse, broom and bracken.

Ianthaw (2023)

My dad, Ian passed away in January this year. I dedicate this drawing to his memory.

Tunnelling through the earth the great Taniwha, Ianthaw embraces his role as the protective guardian. Highly respected, this supernatural being reminds us that we are always watched by a power that is stronger than mankind.

Dangerous and determined with a twist of unpredictability his tail reveals the ability to manipulate earth for desired achievement.

His internal conflict against letting go is eminent but through surrender he finally allows mother nature to take her regenerative course.

As a family every Easter holiday we would get the opportunity to experience one of Aotearoa's great walks. The native beech forest was one of Ian's favorite places on earth.

Dad was proud to have an ancestorial blood link to the Māori iwi Ngāti Raukawa, with his roots growing up in the Waikato. In his academic life as a health economist for years he dedicated his time helping the indigenous population. Writing papers trying to help those most vulnerable with diabetes, Hepatitis C, evoking change with budgets and policy. In 2006 he was awarded a Te Amorangi; National Māori Academic Excellence Awards ~ Te Tohu Kairangi ~

He was modest about his work and did this while raising a family, navigating and surviving a huge health battle with integrity and building a gorgeous walnut and blueberry farm alongside my mum.

Ian loved watching and helping my art career develop. Here are a two photographs celebrating this.

What A Delight Seeing Neil Dawson's Equipoise Series

I had the pleasure of chatting with artist Neil Dawson on Friday last week at his exhibition titled equipoise. The 76 year old artist came across as a very humble character, with a child like spark revealing his true passion for his creations.

To my surprise gallerist Jonathan Smart kindly informed me that Neil has been creating these beautiful feathers since 1988.

The exhibition showcases 10 feathers which are really quite remarkable to experience all together.

Up Down, Down Up (2022)

The back gallery installation seen above is my favourite of the show. They most definitely give the viewer the illusion of lightness, as one would expect from a feather floating in space. The overall effect evokes a feeling of calmness.

I was able to complete Rejuvenate over the Easter weekend!!!

It's been a roller coaster of a time. I am incredibly grateful to the community for the wonderful support, the Hensman family, in particular Lynda and Phil Hensman who were amazingly supportive behind the scene. The assistant artists, builders and local workers were encouraging and made the experience that little bit more pleasurable.

Concerns about how to look after our mental health during times of uncertainty and isolation is of utmost importance since the Covid-19 pandemic swept across our planet. How do we look after ourselves and our loved ones? Karma Kiwi bird is a representation of this psychological journey. She is calm, grounded and is being kind to herself. Taking the time to slow down, watch her thoughts and emotions. Cultivating love of self which will inevitably radiate out to help others.

This incredible flying insect not only gives us delicious honey but of course pollinates our flowers and plants, helping us grow food; keeping us happy and healthy human beings.
