Patty Carlson, Proving That Music Heals The Brain And Increases Intelligence.

Film score composer, concert pianist and author, PATTY CARLSON and the Numeric Language of Music.

Patty Carlson composes and has produced film scores on the PBS, ABC and Turner Broadcasting Systems for over 12 years. "As much as I love composing, producing and performing music, my greater passion is the development, research and analysis of the language of music as a mathematical science."

In the late 1980's, Patty Carlson's work first appeared in the "Play the Piano Overnight" product infomercial. It went on to become the best selling music instuction video of all time, selling millions of copies. "I originally designed my lessons to introduce a student to the experience of playing the piano fluently from one end of the keyboard to the other. I created a simple numeric system to teach students how to play the piano and compose music." Billboard magazine awarded "Play the Piano Overnight" as Best Music Instruction Product.

Celebrity Barbi Benton was one of Patty's first students. At the time of Barbi's first session, she had never played the piano. Patty introduced her to approximately 20-minutes of information, reducing the structural form of the language of music to simple mathematic sequences. Two days later, Barbi returned playing an original composition using dramatically complex and advanced music structures which had not been introduced in the initial session. Patty realized there must be an explanation for what she had just witnessed.

"The accelerated rate of Barbie's development in composition and performance skills was so extraordinary, I felt compelled to focus on the development and analysis of the numeric system I had designed." Patty began to enroll students in a Development Case Study program. She recorded students from their first session using her numeric system to document the acceleration in student performance and comprehension. The first student in the program was a seven year old boy named Adam.

Adam's performance skills and comprehension level developed quickly. Patty filmed an interview with Tracy Williams, Adam's mother. During the interview Tracy asked if she could talk about something that had happened at Adam's school. Over the 6-month period, Adam's reading skills had advanced from a 1st grade level to a 5th grade, 3rd month level. Adam's math scores had accelerated to 98% in national testing. Adam's hand writing skills had advanced from the absolute worst in his class to the best. The only change in Adam's everyday routine was his enrollment in Patty's Development Case Study program.

More students began showing accelerated development in additional scholastic areas. According to Stephanie's mother, during a 6-month program studying the Numeric Language of Music, Stephanie's math scores advanced from a D- to an A+. Sharon Valadez, also studying the program, advanced from completely failing math to a B. Home schooling mom, Darla Krug reported her son, Jerry, tested a full 30% higher in his reading scores shortly after studying the program.

Patty began investigating neuroscience and medical research studies on the relationship between music and the brain. In a 2008 New York Times article, Dr. Claudius Conrad, a New York surgeon, was interviewed regarding research he was conducting with relation to music and healing. The patients listening to Mozart's music showed several responses that Dr. Conrad expected, based on other studies: reduced pressure and heart rate, less need for pain medication and a 20 percent drop in two important stress hormones... Amid these expected responses was the study's new finding: a 50 per cent jump in pituitary growth hormone.

Dr. John Morely commented "The question is whether the jump in growth hormone actually drives the sedative effect or is part of something else going on." Further on in the article, Dr. Conrad discussed the music of Mozart. "An obvious question that comes up," Dr. Conrad said, "is why Mozart would write music that is so soothing." Mozart's letters and biographies portray a man almost constantly sick, constantly fending off one infection or ailment after another. Dr. Conrad concluded "I think he composed music the way he did partly because it made him feel better."

In an interview with famed neurologist Oliver Sacks, Mr. Sacks was asked "Can playing music alter the brain?" "Very strikingly" he replied. "In musicians... there's more grey matter in the cerebellum". Research has shown the amount of grey matter in the brain is positively correlated with human intelligence (AndReason 1994).

In a 2004 video titled "Understanding Language", Dr. Jefferey Elman, a Professor of Cognitive Science at UCSD, concluded his lecture stating "if there is a language organ, it's probably the brain". It has long been known the study of music is associated with increased ability in additional scholastic areas, though not necessarily to the degree of advancement students of the Numeric Language of Music experienced in such a small amount of time. The main intrigue for Patty, however, was why had Adam's handwriting skills advanced from the worst in his class to the best in his class?

Patty had been playing the piano and composing music for twenty plus years. In Patty's words "my handwriting is still barely legible." Patty recalled the first time Adam's mother mentioned the incident when Adam's teacher had criticized his handwriting. Tracy described the teacher's comments as insistent, almost angry that Adam's handwriting was so bad, the absolute worst in his class, emphatic that something had to be done about it.

In Patty's published exploratory thesis, Patty suggests the possibility the Numeric Language of Music, a system of conveying the vocabulary of the language of music as a series of mathematical algorithms, may be the innate, inherent language of the brain. Patty reasons, "As a remedial language, the human brain may be stimulated to compose music to heal itself. If Mozart composed music to heal himself, the music vocabulary may carry residual effects."

Adam experienced extreme criticism over his poor handwriting skills. "Did studying the Numeric Language of Music stimulate Adam's brain, subsequently comprehending the emotional distress Adam was experiencing and create a remedy to overcome the traumatic emotional experience by advancing Adam's handwriting skills from the worst in his class to the best in his class?" Patty asks. "According to his mother, Adam had no additional training or help in his handwriting skills during the transition from the worst handwriting in his class to the best handwriting in his class. The only change in Adam's everyday routine was the study of the Numeric Language of Music."

Stephanie and Sharon, both age 13, did not want to hear their math grades or talk with the math teacher at the parent/teacher conference. Neither of the girls were aware they had answered the math problems correctly, or that their grades had advanced to an A+ and B. Neither of the girls had any additional training in math during the time they studied the Numeric Language of Music. "These results imply their brain, stimulated from the study of the Numeric Language of Music, developed the capability to perform the math on its own, "says Patty.

In 2008, Patty Carlson was granted a US Patent for the Numeric Language of Music, a method of conveying musical information. Most musicians know that numbers have previously been used universally in music education, so what changes did Patty Carlson make? "In the Numeric Language of Music, the numeric symbols indicate a single point in the music scale from which a pattern of interval relationship between musical tones is derived.

Numeric values are not combined to represent the individual tones of music vocabulary. The numeric values do not revert back to an alphabetic system of symbols previously used as the fixed identity of musical tones" Patty explains. "The simplicity is one of the great advantages of my course. I recently wrote an article published at Johns Hopkins University of Education using the Numeric Language of Music to explain the circle of 5ths as an elementary numeric sequence. The circle of 5ths is a theoretical concept which many students have difficulty understanding. Presenting music as a mathematical science of structural form and motion is a new foundation to begin from. My course makes music composition and theory easier to accomplish and understand".

Having completed the development design of the Numeric Language of Music Course, Patty is actively researching the effects in application. "The mind's relationship with music is so fascinating" Patty says. "To have potentially discovered a key to communicate with, to learn from, or to train the subconscious mind is an amazing concept. As my theory continues to be substantiated through additional medical and scientific research, the Numeric Language of Music, realized as the inherent language of the brain, will continue to present new horizons for discovery."
