Lonely – Manipulation Tutorial

Although we only need a few stock images for this manipulation, the real challenge will be to create the illumination and the night ambient. It took me a while until I found the right combination of blend modes and Adjustment Layers that worked.

If you’ve already seen my Manipulation Secrets episodes, many of the techniques used here will make sense for you because I’m applying the same ones here. I will try to give you as many details as I can anyways. If you’re not advanced, try to use the same layer names as me because it will be easier for you to follow along. Let’s start.

Web design inspiration is always helpful, because looking at the creative works of others you can find your own creativity. There are obviously different approaches that you can use, it depends usually on the content and the concept, business or organization that the web site represents. One of such design approaches can be using a photo as a key element.

Large photos are becoming increasingly popular in web design, particularly acting as a background of a website. They can help quickly establish mood, color palette, and easily reflect the meaning and the purpose of a website. However, such photos tend to attract attention and it's important to have a really great photo in order to use it as a background, but you should remember that very often photos require some tricky photomanipulations. Besides, it's relatively harder to resize photos based on a user's browser size, some advanced CSS or, in some cases, Flash, is required to make everything look good.

As cool as the site is, this background is pretty catchy and innovative.

This piece was originally conceived as a part of CG set for a commercial spot about hamburgers throughout recent American history. However, the potential also existed for the set to be the stage for a visual exploration in lighting, composition, and cinematography. So the assets were repurposed to try and achieve that goal. The lighting was originally intended to evoke a sense of an old game show stage after hours, think Price Is Right Showcase after the lights have gone down. Although it did evolve, it should still capture that low-lighting feeling. Color correction was performed in After Effects to try and achieve the look of an old photograph. The popular "Instagram" presets were a big inspiration. Mental Ray was the primary renderer and Adobe products were used for texturing, compositing, and editing.
