Summer is our quieter time which allows us to address some loose ends as well as work on new machines.

Over this past weekend, we finished a machine that will soon install at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Or. This machine will premier early fall.

Pacific University Art-o-matŪ, click here.

However, before that kickoff...we'll be installing a machine at the Tiny Studio in Kalamazoo.

Tiny Studio Art-o-matŪ, click here.

Also, we recently were interviewed by an arts and culture newspaper in Mexico City. Hopefully, our friends Diego and Jonathan will help us translate any subtleties that online free translations tend to miss. ;) Anyway, it would be nice if a few new artists from far away became involved after this review.

Excelsior Article, click here.

Sincerely,

Clark and AIC

Art-o-matŪ Kickoff at the Polk Museum of Art!

Hi There!

This Saturday (10:30am) we'll be installing our first machine in Lakeland, Fl. That means the studio is busy. ;) Here are a few things that are going on.

We were recently featured on FLYP. "Ka-ching! You're an art collector". This is a very interesting and well designed online magazine. There are many Art-o-matŪ artists represented in this article. The video of Herbert Hoover casting pewter was a nice visual. It truly represents how much of a human touch goes into making work for the project. The image of Butterfinger napping out is pretty much part of our day to day here in the studio. The dude knows how to relax.

FLYP "Ka-ching! You're an art collector", click here.

Next week (Saturday, April 18th)...Art-o-matŪ will return to Tennessee! Our host, Create Here, is an innovative organization focused on economic and cultural development in Chattanooga. This machine will be one of the brightest machines that we have produced since our Detroit community machine. It is a beautiful Magenta(ish) pink. The kickoff will take place from 5:30-7:30pm. Open to the public.

Info about the kickoff, click here.
Info about Create Here, click here.

On may 6th at 7:00pm, I (Clark) will be discussing Art-o-matŪ with the Dallas Society of Visual Communication. FYI, I was born into Graphic Design and did that thing until Art-o-mat learned how to walk, talk, eat, p@@p, etc....thus, requiring my full attention. This will be the first time the project has been presented to "peeps" from my former profession. Uh.."peeps" was specifically in reference to the holiday timing of this news posting.

DSVC.org, click here.

One more host plug. Canteen, the largest vending company in the country, now has a bright cyan blue Art-o-mat. This machine will be in their H.Q. while periodically breaking out for trade shows, national meetings, events, etc. Their machine can be seen in the the FLYP video. We are very happy to have Canteen as a machine host.

Canteen, click here.

Sincerely,

Clark and AIC

March Artists Highlight

Hi There!

It is cold and rainy with a possible chance of snow. Makes for a good time to stay indoors and feature some new art. Let's begin with an instructional video by Robyn Wells. Basically, we often encounter people who have a difficult time wrapping their minds around what we sell from our machines. Well, Robyn has done a good job of explaining her Art-o-mat work. I (Clark) gave presentations at both venues where local artists were invited to stick around afterwards, discuss the nuts & bolts on how to produce Art-o-mat work and become involved in the project. Some had prototypes in hand!

The machines have been well received. It is an honor to have these two venues as machine hosts.

Pictures from the installations, click here.

Coverage by the Miami Herald, click here.

After the work was done, it was time to kick around some. This vintage 22 column National "Ebongold" machine now has a home in a former Post Office turned arts venue. The town square is very reminiscent of the set from "Back to the Future". There is a courthouse in the middle of the square (the future Earl Scruggs Center) that has a working clock tower, various cafes littered about and many beautiful buildings that will be around long after the nearby malls are leveled. There is positive energy happening in Shelby and we are very happy to the the Arts Council as a host.

A few pics from the install

Also, just in time for Art Basel, we installed a machine in the Miami Art Museum. We are extremely happy to have this museum on our venue list! Our official Miami host, the Lanster Family, made this happen and we are appreciative for their ongoing support of the project. They manage two Art-o-mat machines. One is currently at the Lowe Museum which is affiliated with the University of Miami.

In light of the above, we would like to thank all of our new machine hosts from 2008 (and a few current hosts who got new machines). This is a great bunch who fully understand that the proliferation of pocket size, affordable works of art can be a positive thing for their community.

Miami Art Museum
The Studios of Key West
Lowe Art Museum
Venue Ballard Studios and Boutique
Art251 Local Art Space
Wonderroot Community Arts Space
Krankies Coffee
Utrecht Quality Art Supplies and Alex Khost
Cleveland County Arts Council
Hutch and Harris
OOP!
The Living Room Salon and Art Gallery
Purveyors of Art and Design Materials
Workhouse Arts center

On a side note, we were recently informed that Noah Scalin has a book of his "Skull a Day" series. If you haven't noticed, we kinda have the affordable thing mastered. But, many of our artists have websites to promote their larger, more involved work. If you are looking for something unique and hand-made while avoiding the hectic big box store...please explore our our artist's personal websites. Several have etsy or gallery links. If you like a particular artist's work (and if they do not have store or gallery links )...a direct email requesting more information about their art would just make their day.

Click here to find out more about our artists!

However, here are a few direct links to get things rolling.....

Lulu's Stabby Critters
Crye's Creations
Krushart.com
Barcodeart.com
Pleasanthillpottery.com
Artwork By Imelda
Weenerware
Dean Walsh
Cory Pitcher
Nikki Wheeler
DeftGurl's Work

Last, many of our hosts have all sorts of cool, affordable stuff.

Official Art-o-matŪ Venues

Sincerely,

AIC

Art-o-mat sentenced to the Workhouse

For Immediate Release:

On Friday, November 7th, a very hardened, former cigarette vending machine was delivered to the Workhouse Arts Center for rehabilitation as an Art-o-matŪ. During processing, documents were presented which proved that this machine's former residence was, of all places, a university dormitory. [Insert crowd gasp, gavel bang, order! order! here]. The machine maintains it's innocence and states the evidence was planted....

OK. Enough with the jokes.

Seriously, the Workhouse is now a machine host and they definitely have a "Swords into Plowshares" thing in common with us. This organization has repurposed a former prison (something normally considered worthless/negative) into an incredibly positive cultural hub for the community of Lorton, Va. Their doors opened in September. Even during this early stage of their conversion process, approximately 100 artists already have studios in the various buildings. We met with several of their artists during the installation and we hope many will be involved in our project. We did not take pictures of their work out of respect for any intellectual property concerns. But many are referenced on the Workhouse website.

The place is exciting. If you are traveling along I-95 south of Washington, DC...we suggest taking a break to check it out.

For the record, this machine was the roughest one we have ever converted into an Art-o-mat. The machine appeared to have been broken into (during it's former life) by being toppled onto it's face. A "before" picture of the machine is posted on our Flickr site link below. A great body shop guy named "Tom" deserves quite a bit of credit for saving this machine from the crusher. An "after" picture that shows his expertise is also posted on that link.

Click here to see pictures of the install.

Click here to find out more about the Workhouse Arts Center.

Uh...one more. Unless paroled early, this machine will be at Workhouse for 20 years to life.

Sincerely,

AIC

European Month of Photography

Hi there.

We were recently informed that our first (and only) Art-o-matŪ artist from Vienna was selected for the European Month of Photography 2008. Achim Gauger creates a series titled "Greetings From" which are spontaneous compositions shot at notable sightseeing attractions using exclusively Polaroid film. He uses this photographic medium as it is somewhat perishable (compared to other photographic materials) and the images can fade...much like our memories.

21 original photographs from this series are in the show. Their official machine premieres will happen on future dates to be determined.

These venues are:

Art251 in Keller, Texas www.art251.com, click here!

Venue Ballard in Seattle www.venueballard.com, click here!

The Studios of Key West www.tskw.org, click here!

Wonderroot Socially Conscious Community Arts Space www.wonderroot.org, click here!

Krankies Coffee www.krankiescoffee.com, click here!

We are very happy to have these new venues as machine hosts!

View pictures from our recent openings! click here!

Sincerely,

Clark and AIC

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e){}"href="http://www.artomat.org/uploaded_images/incoming-733391.jpg">
September Artist Highlight

Hi there.

Everyday is kinda like a major holiday here at the AIC studio. We are constantly surprised with the new work that we receive. Also, we go through quite a few box cutter blades processing the new work and preparing it for delivery to our venues.

Here are a few artists that we unpacked today.

Click Here! What you will see is a pile of incoming shipments

The first series is documenting a unique presentation by Dewitt Young. He makes works from recycled computer parts.
Dewitt Young, click here!

The other box labeled "Kerplunk" is the new series by Rebecca Grantham. She creates wearable paintings from puzzle pieces. If you buy the whole edition...you could assemble the full painting.
Rebecca Grantham, click here!

Last in the series of pictures are works by "Artgasm". This is a collective of student artists from the University of Nebraska's Community Arts Class. There are some very innovative works in this series and we here at AIC were impressed. This group is a fine example of how an art school can use Art-o-mat as part of their lesson plan. How many students can say they have had work in an Art-o-mat in "insert arts venue or museum name here"? This is the second series from this group.

Our University of Nebraska Lincoln machine is at the Ross.

Sincerely,

AIC

Limited Editions now available on www.shopartomat.com

Hi there.

Keeping with our mission of getting art into the hands of people, we now have limited edition offerings by Art-o-matŪ artists. It has not been slated for salvage (parted out) to create other Art-o-matŪ machines. It is still intact and kerplunking away on location at the historic Kentucky Theatre. However, the charitable mission of this machine is now to support the Mighty Wurlitzer restoration project. Our host, Miki Wright, has arranged for all profits from Art-o-mat sales to aid in this restoration.

Click here to learn more about the Kentucky Mighty Wurlitzer restoration.

Basically, the Kentucky Theatre opened during the silent film era and had all of the luxuries of the day and age. This included a huge screen, air conditioning (via ice blocks and fans) and a high end organ with a talented accompanist.

Over the decades, the theatre went through the typical struggles fittingly portrayed on the cover of the 1981 Styx album "Paradise Theatre". But, thanks to the Kentucky Theatre Group, the theatre was eventually restored and reopened in 1992 with the primary focus to show innovative films, present live music and host private events. Returning the original Wurlitzer organ will be another great step in this theatre reclaiming it's full splendor.

Sincerely,

AIC

New Art-o-matŪ in Costa Mesa!

Hi All:

Next weekend, we will premier a machine in Orange County. We are very happy to have the Living Room as a machine host.

If you are around this Saturday evening, please stop by!

Sincerely,

AIC

New Art-o-matŪ machine in NYC!

Hi All:

Next weekend, we will be swapping out our current NYC Community Machine with an updated model that will accept the newly designed $5.00 bill.

The custom "Heart Mine" faceplate for this machine was created by artist Jessica Guptill. This machine will reside at Utrecht Art Supply, 111 Fourth Avenue (Between 11th and 12th Streets). However, it may periodically move around. Or, maybe not. Utrecht likes the machine and it weighs quite a bit. End of day, we prefer you walk in and visit this machine vs. us moving it via a dolly to visit you. ;)

The original NYC Community Machine was created as an invitation to NYC artists to become involved in our project. The machine was intended to move around the city for events. But, it eventually found a comfortable home at Utrecht. The invitation to NYC artists still stands. However, this machine is open to all Art-o-matŪ artists (past, present and future). So, if you know an artist who may be interested in making art for our machines, please spread the word.

To see pictures of our new NYC Community Machine, click here!

To see more art by Jessica Guptill, click here!

To find out more about the Utrecht Art Supply, click here!

Sincerely,

AIC

<img style="float:left; The machine is located in the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center located on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

With the proceeds from this machine, our host Sandra Williams and the UNL Department of Art and Art History established a scholarship fund to assist students working within the parameters of community art. For her work in ceramics and serigraphy in local schools, the first recipient of this award is Mollie Magnusen (pictured holding one of her custom designed squirrel totes). She received $500 to use at her discretion and the Ross received $150 from this fund to assist with their general programming.

To know more about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Art, click here!

To know more about the Mary Riepma Ross media Arts Center, click here!

Sincerely,

AIC

Random Fun Pics

Hi All.

Spring is almost here. For us, this is a common time to begin the process of converting dirty, smelly "boat anchors" into Art-o-matŪ machines for our future venues. So far for 2008, we have tentative plans to install machines in a few cities that have been on our "wish list" for some time. Some of these are not quite ready to publicize. However, we are ready and proud to announce that the Living Room Salon and Art Gallery (125 Rochester Street, Costa Mesa, Ca) will be our next host sometime in April(ish). When the install date & opening is officially set, you all will be the first to know.

For now, here are some very entertaining and positive pictures of people showing off their Art-o-matŪ art and/or documenting their art vending experience. Between preparing/implementing our swap meet last summer and then launching the Art-o-matŪ online store barely under the holiday deadline....well, let's just say this past year has been a blur.

Basically, we just want you to know that whether you bought art from our machines, became a machine host, sported one of our T-shirts around town, mentioned Art-o-matŪ to an artist friend, or if you helped us move heavy, dirty, unrestored machines, we are very grateful and appreciative.

So, thanks a bunch!

FYI: here is some recent press.

Sincerely,

AIC

Art-o-matŪ Online Store Now Available.

HI all:

After years of having various items available for purchase during our machine installations and at our host venues, we finally have official Art-o-matŪ items for sale online.

One item which will premier on this site will be the Art-o-carton™. This is an open ended edition which is specifically designed for people who cannot get to one of our machines. It is also great as a gift and can be shipped to the person of your choosing. The goal of the Art-o-carton™ is to create an experience for the buyer (or recipient) which will be almost as personal as visiting one of our machines. More information is on our site.

To visit our store, please click Here!

FYI: Since this is a new venture for us, our inventory is somewhat humble until we have a handle on demand. So, if an item is on backorder, please cut us a little slack. ;)

Sincerely,

AIC
