The University of West Georgia will present its annual A DAY Music Faculty Concert on Monday, Oct. 13, at 8:15 p.m. in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts.

A donor reception will be held before the concert in the Townsend Center at 7:30 p.m. The events are free and the community is invited to attend. Dr. Kevin Hibbard, chair and professor of music, is coordinating the event.

“The annual A DAY Music Faculty Concert showcases the spectacular talent of our faculty as a musical gift to the community,” said Hibbard. “We perform for A DAY to show our appreciation of the wonderful support that the community provides to the university.”

“The music faculty spends all day long teaching. They lead rehearsals, research, write and supervise student teachers, yet they still find time to keep their performance chops in tip top order. This sets a superb example for our students.”

This year’s concert will feature two new faculty: Peter Mueller, a trombonist who plays in the Macon Symphony, and Dr. Reverie Berger, a mezzo-soprano with extensive operatic credentials.
Performances for the 2008 concert include a piano duet performed by Jan Adams, instructor of piano, and Dr. Dawn McCord, assistant professor of music education; a violin and piano duet featuring Dr. Carol Gingerich, associate professor of music, and Dr. Elizabeth Kramer, assistant professor of music; and a trio led by Dr. Daniel Bakos, a jazz studies and music professor.
Also performing are Dr. Larry Frazier, a bass singer and professor of music; Melanie Fuller, an instructor of flute; Michael Lanier, instructor of trumpet, guest Terry Lowry, conductor and pianist.

The community is invited to enjoy the musical talents of West Georgia’s faculty and staff. UWG students benefit from scholarships obtained through the generosity of donors who contribute to the university’s annual A DAY campaign.

For more information regarding the A DAY for West Georgia campaign, contact the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at 678-839-6582. For more information on the 2008 A DAY Music Faculty Concert, call the Department of Music at 678-839-6516.

-----
www.fayettefrontpage.com
Fayette Front Page
www.georgiafrontpage.com
Georgia Front Page

(NASDAQ: CKEC) announced October 8, 2008, that The Royal Opera House in HD “Series of Five Masterworks” will be featured on 42 digital High-Definition screens through DigiScreen, at local Carmike theatres in 26 states.

The Royal Opera House is the home of three world-class performing companies – The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera, and The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. It is a focal point for England’s national and international artistic excellence, where the evolving traditions of opera and ballet are taken to the highest levels. Excellence without compromise. This is the Royal Opera House.

Starting Thursday, October 16, 2008, Carmike Cinemas will feature a series of five masterworks - including two operas and three ballets. The five stellar productions exemplify the extraordinarily high levels of artistry and entertainment attained by one of the world’s foremost opera and ballet companies.

Carmen: Thursday, October 16, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 19, 1:00 p.m.

Bizet’s Carmen is one of those rare operas in which every number seems to be a familiar, favorite melody. It is jam-packed with sexy solos, rousing choruses, impassioned arias and delightful Spanish dances. Tuneful, colorful, evocative and dramatic!

The Spanish heat and gypsy passion of Carmen comes to life in Francesca Zambello’s production, recreating the sun-drenched and sensual world of 19th century Spain, with its ranks of soldiers and crowds of peasants, gypsies and bullfighters, its spectacle and its deadly, white-hot emotions.

At the heart of the story of one woman’s tangled relationships with two men is Carmen herself, played by the fabulous singer-actor Anna Caterina Antonacci. The great Italian soprano is matched by two devilishly handsome men as her love interests; steamingly sexy German tenor, Jonas Kaufmann and the smouldering Italian baritone, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo.

The Sleeping Beauty: Thursday, October 23, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 26, 1:00 p.m.

Britain’s Royal Ballet brings to the screen one of ballet’s most loved classics. The Sleeping Beauty combines, in a single work, all the charms and virtuosity that ballet has to offer. This famous staging was created for the Royal Ballet in 1946, from the original 1890 Marius Petipa production in St. Petersburg. It was revived for the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Ballet in 2006.

The Sleeping Beauty is led by two of the Royal Ballet’s finest dancers; the beautiful Alina Cojocuru stars as Princess Aurora and the dark, handsome Federico Bonelli stars as Prince Florimud. Tchaikovsky’s glorious score for this beautiful ballet is played by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

This ballet is a great showcase of the Company’s many talents and a living milestone in its history. This Sleeping Beauty’s style and visual splendor are unique to The Royal Ballet.

Tales of Beatrix Potter: Thursday, October 30, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 2, 1:00 p.m.

A special performance for children of all ages, and for those who are just young at heart! The London Royal Ballet’s production of Tales of Beatrix Potter brings the characters from her famous stories alive on-stage.

In 1971, Fredrick Ashtown choreographed Tales of Beatrix Potter for film. Two decades later, Anthony Dowell staged Ashton’s choreography for The Royal Ballet, giving the company one of its more charming offerings. The production’s ingenious use of scale when designing the sets and their spectacular costumes and masks quickly draws audiences in to the wondrous world of Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddleduck.

Only in the Royal Ballet’s Tales of Beatrix Potter will you behold the delightful dancing of naughty mice, see Pigling Bland and Pig-Wig perform a wonderful pig pas de deux, witness an overly excited Squirrel Nutkin leap, twirl and whirl around the stage and cheer as all of the much loved characters join in the glorious grand finale. John Lanchbery’s music, based mostly on forgotten Victorian melodies, is utterly captivating, inspiring spirited playing from the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Paul Murphy.

Le Nozze Di Figaro: Thursday November 6, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 9, 1:00 p.m.

Mozart’s music makes Le Nozze di Figaro one of the finest jewels in the opera repertory, with a wealth of famous melodies that commence with the familiar first notes of the energetic Overture.

A London highlight of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, David McVicar’s spellbinding production illuminates Mozart’s masterpiece, shifting the action to a French chateau in the aftermath of the 1830 revolution. At the tragic heart of the opera, Gerald Finely’s suave, dashingly self-absorbed Count and Dorothea Roschmann’s passionately dignified Countess are deadlocked in a romantic contest that impacts dramatically on the court’s feisty valet Figar (Erwin Schrott) and his fianceé, the sassy Susanna (Miah Persson). The late-summer beauty of Paule Constable’s lighting and Tanya McCallin’s evocative sets provide the perfect backdrop for the invigorating wit and emotional depth of Antonio Pappano’s conducting of the Royal Opera House Orchestra.

Romeo and Juliet: Thursday, November 13, 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 16, 1:00 p.m.

The Royal Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet is a major event, featuring the much anticipated partnering of extraordinary prima ballerina Tamara Rojo and superstar Carlos Acosta in the title roles.

Kenneth MacMillian’s great interpretation of Shakespeare’s enduring tragedy is one of the most popular works in The Royal Ballet repertory and one of the greatest examples of 20th century choreography. The setting is Renaissance Verona, where a chance meeting ignites a profound love between Romeo and Juliet, bringing with it first hope of uniting their families in peace, followed by a misunderstanding, and finally tragedy and death. They recently announced a concert by the highly acclaimed Georgia Guitar Quartet on November 13 at 7 PM.

Formed in 1996 and hailing from Athens, Georgia, the ensemble maintains an active concert schedule, performing in a variety of venues, ranging from concert halls to popular music clubs. A typical GGQ concert will feature moving performances coupled with enthusiastic audience interaction. Passion, flair, sensitivity, and humor are characteristic qualities of every GGQ concert. In addition to performing classical music from the Renaissance to the present day, The Quartet explores other styles such as jazz, bluegrass, ragtime and Celtic music. While expanding the catalog of music for four guitars by arranging pre-existing works, the Quartet has a profound interest in the creation and performance of modern music. As a result of their diverse repertoire, the group appeals to a wide range of music lovers.

The Quartet performs regularly throughout the US. One review of their 1999 Piccolo Spoleto Festival performance in Charleston, South Carolina, described the concert as “a dazzling display of technical prowess, versatile programming, and audience rapport.”

In 2001, the Quartet was invited by Christopher Parkening to perform as quest artists in his twenty-seventh annual master class in Bozeman, Montana. The ensemble’s recordings have each won great critical acclaim. Their debut CD was ranked among the top ten Athens albums of 1998 by Flagpole Magazine. Two new albums of the Quartet’s original arrangements and compositions will be released this year on Solponticello Records

The Centre is located on Lower Fayetteville Road several miles east of Newnan. Information on the Georgia Guitar Quartet concert and any other Centre events is available by calling 770-254-2787.

- Forrest Schultz, Coweta Arts Tidbits
---
www.FayetteFrontPage.com
Fayette Front Page
Community News You Can Use
Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone
www.GeorgiaFrontPage.com
www.ArtsAcrossGeorgia.com
---

The festival features outstanding recent cinema from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Uruguay. Its twelve internationally award-winning films represent the best of comedy, drama, thriller and documentary in Latin American film today. The series will include special appearances by “Used Parts” actor Eduardo Granados, “Young Blood” director Leo Ricciardi and Atlanta-based director and media educator Roberto Arevalo, who will present the premiere of his short film “A Cuban Family.”

“The High is excited to present its 23rd year of the Latin American Film Festival as we continue to offer patrons a series deep in quality and breadth,” said Curator of Media Arts Linda Dubler. “With our festival program consultant Sandro Fiorin, we have curated a program that reflects the diverse film culture of Latin America. While themes of social and political justice are strongly represented with ‘The Zone,’ ‘Used Parts,’ ‘Kill Them All’ and ‘Elite Squad,’ this year’s festival also showcases brilliant love stories, family dramas and laugh-out-loud comedies.”

The Latin American Film Festival opens on Friday, October 10, with “The Zone.” Rodrigo Plá’s thriller serves up savage social critique along with suspense. Winner of the International Critics’ Award at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, “The Zone” centers on a home invasion and the panic-stricken residents who band together to mete out their own vigilante justice. This film is in Spanish with subtitles. A reception hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta will follow.

On Saturday, October 11, “Used Parts” is a vibrant film from debut director Aarón Fernández. Noteworthy for its realism, humanity and superb performances, the film is set in Mexico City and centers on 14-year-old Ivan, whose uncle Jaime runs a shady car-parts business. Ivan saves most of his earnings at the shop to pay for passage to the U.S., but when plans change, he is forced to leave childhood behind and face the future with only his street smarts and will to survive. This film is in Spanish with subtitles. Actor Eduardo Granados will be present to introduce the film and for a Q&A following the screening.

Showing on Friday, October 17, “Kill Them All” is an intricately plotted political thriller whose main character, Julia, investigates the kidnapping of a Chilean chemist sought by the international courts as a witness against one-time dictator Augusto Pinochet. Based on real events, Esteban Schroeder’s feature debut orchestrates the intrigue, betrayals and deal-making of its genre, and focuses on a woman with a strong social conscience, determined yet vulnerable, who is struggling to make it in a man’s world. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

“A Cuban Family,” on Saturday, October 18, at 7 p.m., is an intimate documentary short produced by Atlanta-based director and media educator Roberto Arevalo. The film is a warm and revealing portrait of an Afro-Cuban family living in a modest Havana neighborhood. With humor and honesty, they reflect on the challenges, pleasures and sense of purpose that shape their lives. This film is in Spanish with subtitles. A brief Q&A with Arevalo will follow the screening. Admission is free with the purchase of a ticket to “Personal Belongings.”

“Personal Belongings” on Saturday, October 18, at 8 p.m., centers on humor, sensuality and an acute understanding of how the personal and political converge in today’s Cuba. Alejandro Brugués’s feature debut is the story of a group of twenty-something friends confronted by limited opportunities at home, seeking exit visas to work elsewhere. In one central relationship, Ernesto is drawn to Anita despite himself and must weigh the promise of their relationship against the lure of the unknown. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

On Friday, October 24, “The Twelve Labors” stars Sidney Santiago who won the Best Actor Award at the Rio International Film Festival for his nuanced portrayal of a young motorbike courier in this fresh coming-of-age story set on the streets of São Paulo. Loosely based on the Greek myth of the twelve labors of Hercules, director Ricardo Elias crafts a richly human story, syncopated to the beat of Brazilian rap, peopled by an idiosyncratic cast of characters and teeming with life. This film is in Portuguese with subtitles.

“The Pope’s Toilet,” on Saturday, October 25, is set in 1988, the year Pope John Paul II made an extraordinary visit to Latin America. Amidst the frenzy of preparations in a downtrodden village in Uruguay, Beto undertakes his own project to benefit from the influx of tourists—building a public toilet in front of his house. Based on a true story, this multiple-award-winner from directors Enrique Fernández and César Charlone is a bittersweet comedy capturing the lives of ordinary people and the dreams that sustain them. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

Showing on Friday, October 31, “Play,” from Chilean writer/director Alicia Scherson, won the Best New Narrative Filmmaker Award at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. The wry, romantic tragicomedy focuses on twenty-something Christina, a poor Mapuche country girl working in Santiago as a home nurse, and Tristan, a young architect obsessed with his ex. The two travel in completely different orbits, but when Tristan is mugged one night, Christina discovers his stolen briefcase and begins following him. This film is in Spanish and Mapudungun with subtitles.

On Saturday, November 1, Leo Ricciardi’s feature debut “Young Blood” is a poignant drama about a young boy who must bond with his elderly grandfather after a family tragedy. A city kid accustomed to computers and video games, Santiago is left in the care of his cranky, strict grandfather, Juan, a farmer with no use for modern entertainments. This film is in Spanish with subtitles. Director Leo Ricciardi will be present to introduce the film.

“Burn the Bridges,” on Friday, November 7, is an audacious debut from theatrical director turned filmmaker Francisco Franco. An air of Gothic decadence and lurid emotion surrounds the conflicted teenaged siblings who await the death of their terminally ill mother. 19-year-old Helena is a drama queen, and her younger brother Sebastian, the object of Helena’s incestuous flirtation, is infatuated with a new boy at school and grappling with his sexual identity. The tension mounts to a breaking point. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

Screening on Saturday, November 8, “Lovesickness” comprises three stories of troubled love in this beautifully observed comedy from directors Carlitos Ruiz and Mariem Perez and executive producer Benicio Del Toro. Flora, a feisty 70-year-old, enjoys the companionship of her ex-husband, with whom she lives, and finds herself the object of competing affections; Lourdes, a wife and mother, discovers that her husband has been unfaithful; and Miguel, a love-addled man, is dominated by his controlling mother. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

In “The Aerial,” showing on Friday, November 14, Esteban Sapir’s brilliantly original allegory tells the story of a metropolis that has fallen under the spell of a sinister industrialist, Mr. TV, who has robbed the citizens of their ability to speak. “The Aerial” is shot and scored like a silent film, and features a singer named The Voice, her blind son, a television repairman and his broken family as the only ones who can halt the media mogul’s quest for total mind control. This film is in Spanish with subtitles.

Closing the festival on Saturday, November 15, is José Padilha’s “Elite Squad,” the most talked-about Brazilian film of 2007. A searing look at an elite police squad called BOPE that was created to combat systemic corruption among law enforcement, the film is based on a book written by two former BOPE captains and a noted anthropologist. A harrowingly violent thriller shot in a documentary style, it won the Berlin Film Festival’s highest prize and eight Cinema Brazil Grand Prize awards. This film is in Portuguese with subtitles. Print courtesy of IFC Films. This film is not appropriate for children.

Film Series Schedule

All films are screened at 8 p.m. in the Richard H. Rich Theatre, *unless otherwise noted. The Richard H. Rich Theatre is located in the Memorial Arts Building, adjacent to the High at Peachtree and 15th Streets in midtown Atlanta. 'Anne Frank: A History for Today' seeks to continue to teach the history and tragedy of the Holocaust, meanwhile making it clear that prejudice and intolerance are topics as real and relevant today as they were during the Nazi era." - Lorene Flanders

The Penelope Melson Society and the Ingram Library will open the exhibit “Anne Frank: A History for Today” on Sunday, Sept. 7. The exhibit is free and the community is welcome to attend during library hours.

Produced in the Netherlands and made available through the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and the Anne Frank Center USA, the exhibit juxtaposes photographs of the Frank family with historical events of the time period.

With 55 exhibition panels that chronicle the rise of Nazism and a three-dimensional representation of the dining room of the Secret Annex, the exhibit challenges the audience to think about the value of tolerance, mutual respect and the significance of human rights.

Another component of the exhibit features photographs taken by soldier and photojournalist William A. Scott III as he participated in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in a segregated all-black army unit. Scott was also a member of one of the leading African-American families of Atlanta who founded and operated The Atlanta Daily World, the nation’s first black owned daily newspaper.

Adding more historical drama to the exhibit is guest speaker Dr. Leon Bass, an educator from Pennsylvania and an African-American soldier who participated along with Scott in the liberation of Buchenwald. He will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. His presentation will also be free to the community through the sponsorship of the UWG Office of Minority Affairs.

Lorene Flanders, professor and director of university libraries, said that the exhibit would open the eyes of its viewers.

“The Anne Frank exhibit on the UWG campus gives members of the campus community and local residents the opportunity to view an exhibit that is touring the nation,” said Flanders. “We expect to welcome some 1,000 eighth grade students to campus to visit the exhibit and appreciate the volunteers who have agreed to serve as docents.”

Sponsors for the exhibit include the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the Richards College of Business, the Honors College, the Advanced Academy of Georgia and the Office of Minority Affairs in association with Ingram Library’s Penelope Melson Society.

The exhibit will be on display through Monday, Sept. 29. Library hours are Sunday, 2 – 10 p.m.; Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. For more information, call 678-839-5337.

-----
www.fayettefrontpage.com
www.georgiafrontpage.com
www.artsacrossgeorgia.com

The Oct. 12, 1958, attack was linked to an epidemic of hate group activity plaguing the South during the civil rights movement.

The impact of The Temple bombing on Atlanta's Jewish community and on the civil rights movement is documented in a new exhibit opening Saturday, Aug. 23 at Emory University.

"'The Bomb that Healed': Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild, Civil Rights and The Temple Bombing of 1958," will be on display at Emory's Manuscript, Archives & Rare Book Library (MARBL) in the Woodruff Library building through Jan. 5, 2009.

The influence of the bombing was not what the bombers might have expected, says curator Ellen G. Rafshoon.

"The bombers had intended to intimidate Jews, who were seen as co-conspirators along with blacks in the civil rights struggle, but this act of terror had the opposite effect," says Rafshoon, a history professor at Georgia Gwinnett College. "When The Temple's spiritual leader, Rabbi Rothschild, returned to his office the following day, he was greeted with mailbags filled with sympathetic messages from Atlanta and from across the nation."

The overwhelming support extended to the congregation gave Atlanta Jews the confidence to become more active in bridging the divide between whites and blacks, Rafshoon notes. That is why Rothschild's widow, Janice, has referred to the otherwise tragic event as "The Bomb That Healed."

The exhibition, which draws on Rabbi Rothschild's personal papers and includes letters, photographs and published clippings, will show how the rabbi worked openly to build support for desegregation among Atlanta's religious and civic leaders. For example, he participated in plans to desegregate Atlanta's schools peacefully.

"This was an especially significant achievement, considering that some of Atlanta's Jews feared challenging Atlanta's rigid racial order," explains Eric Goldstein, associate professor of history and Jewish studies at
