The group started in November of 1973 as the Professional Artists of Ashtabula County. As membership grew, the direction of the organization was changed. Membership was opened to anyone interested in the arts and the name was changed to the Lake Shore Artists of Ashtabula County. The Lake Shore Artists invite anyone interested in creative visual art to join them. Dues are $15 per year. In addition to regular meetings, group members also get together during the month to work on their individual projects and share each others company.

Opening on May 11th, Ballet Theatre Ashtabula will launch a spring time dance concert featuring a mixture of diverse works that include many new pieces as well as audience favorites from years past.

Returning to the stage will be two very popular pieces by Clover Robinson. “Blackbird,” a Beatles favorite sung by Dionne Farris, is a female solo that will be danced by Alicia Ngiraingas. The dancer embodies strength from the earth and the natural freedom of a bird in flight. “Half Acre” like so many dances choreographed by Robinson, resembles poetry in motion. The audience will be mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the four female dancers as they move with heartwarming freedom to the beautiful voice of Sally Ellyson of the indie - folk - rock band HEM.

Other classics returning to the stage include “Adagio For Strings” and “Romance.”

“Adagio for Strings” with music by Samuel Barber and choreography by Shelagh Dubsky, is a stunning piece that is considered by many to be Ballet Theatre Ashtabula’s signature piece and has been danced by most of the girls who have danced at the AAC over the many years of the company’s existence. “Adagio For Strings” takes the individual dancers with their own interpretation of the music to a place where the entire ensemble is operating as one. Truly ethereal in its simplicity, the ballet creates an intimate resonance between the dancers, the music and the audience.

“Romance” created for Clover Robinson and her partner Mark Sivy in 1992, is still relevant today. Meghann Stell and Dan VanAllen will dance the roles this year which reveal the deep and eternal love of a man for a woman. Beautiful lines and poetry make this dance memorable.

“Moving to Stand Still” is a new work for the company. Set to the beautifully conceived music of Bach’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in D Minor, this piece incorporates a ballet base with an intense movement style that pushes the dancer to the edge of musicality and physicality. Dancers move in bundles of combustive energy while ultimately remaining true to their classical training.

On the classical side, no performance is complete without a virtuoso Pas de Deux. This year will be no exception with Tim Kolman and Sarah Mudd dancing the charismatic classic “Don Quixote” pas de Deux. Kolman, who has received many scholarship offers for summer study at prestigious dance schools, brings the male role in “Don Q” to a new level of accomplishment as Mudd displays quick footwork to match her partners fire.

Pieces choreographed by instructor Karen Sly include a modern quartet involving boxing gloves and is set to the music of the Adiemus Variations performed by the Smith Quartet of the London Philharmonic. Another is set to Five for Fighting’s “100 Years” and features two Arts Center families. The piece centers around the quick passage of time for both individuals and for parents watching their children grow. In a final work by Sly, Florence and the Machine accompany Tessa and Tobias Deutsch on a humorous journey through the ups and downs of love.

Also on the program will be a series of solos, duets, quartets and group pieces set to the music of Brandi Carlile, Elton John, the Beatles, Debussy, Rossini and Verve with additional choreography by Scott DeCola and Meg Stell.

Come and join us for an unforgettable experience that the entire family will enjoy!

Thursdays for Tots

THURSDAYS FOR TOTS
Wow - after our winter that never really happened I know our spirits here at the Arts Center have been higher and brighter than usual. We hope you feel the same.

The beginning of April we kicked off our annual membership/fund drive for our upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1st annually. By now many of you have already received letters from the AAC's membership/fund drive committee asking for your support. I know some of you may wonder when it ever ends (our volunteers also feel this way sometimes). Last campaign continued through the year until early January due to the fact we had not yet achieved our goal. Thanks to the efforts of our core committee, which addresses this very necessary effort, we were successful! BRAVO to Mike Fedler, Tom Picken, Judy Robson and Rob Schimmelpfennig for all the extra work they put into this critical effort. Thankfully each member of this group has already committed to working again this year to help us reach our goal. If you are interested in joining this hardworking group, please let us know - the more the merrier! We also understand some of you may have contributed as recently as last December and are now wondering why we are approaching you again so soon. We are asking that you consider making a pledge at this time while making your actual payment at a later date. Just note your request on your pledge envelope, and we will be glad to send you a reminder statement at a later date.

If you have never pledged or contributed before and haven't done so in the recent past, we encourage you to consider doing so at this time. You are on our mailing list because you have attended a performance, class or event at the Center or have requested we include you. The annual membership/fund drive comprises 20% of our annual budget and is critical to our existence. The Center has an excellent track record of generating about 60% of our budget through earned income, but we are very dependent upon your support to successfully end each year.

The Arts Center understands this is a challenging time economically. The dollars you invest in the Ashtabula Arts Center support programming and activities right here in our home region. We are all feeling the pinch of these tight times. We hope you will agree that investing further in the Ashtabula Arts Center is a true value and good use of your support.

We are most thankful for your consideration and support.

Class Placement
It should be understood that more than one year is often needed in any given level. Our main concern is to provide each individual student with the training necessary at any given stage of development. If a change to another level is appropriate, you or the student will be notified at the end of the previous term. Promotions and level placements are made at the discretion of the staff, although parents are welcome to request a conference concerning a child’s progress.

Observing Classes
Especially in the case of younger students, parents and friends are asked not to observe classes except when invited. Children are often shy and distracted when they have an “audience.” The last class of the term, family and friends will be invited to observe an entire class or portion of a class. However, if parents have concerns about a child’s progress, a special observation day may be arranged.

“Growing up, I received a strong foundation in the arts at The Ashtabula Arts Center. I danced with Janyce Hyatt, threw pots with Corinne Lloyd, played piano with Muriel Whistler, learned to draw from Ray Koski, participated in Puppet Theater, performed in Straw Hat Theatre and well, I did just about everything you could imagine from 1960 to the early 70's. I attended Harbor High School my freshman year and then finished my last three years at Northfield Mount Hermon in Massachusetts. During my college years at The College of Wooster, I studied studio art with George Olson.

“I like to paint loose and free. Movement, mood and dynamics are the most important aspects of a painting for me. A good painting will catch the viewer off balance, wake them up a bit and set them imagining - what is happening here? Paint on paper becomes more than the sum of its parts when breath and story and spirit come together in strong, fluid brush strokes of playful discovery, supported by attention to composition, light and color.

“Growing up along the banks of Lake Erie in Ashtabula my wild place was always the beach. The big oak tree, the lift bridge, the view of the harbor, the railroad yards, quiet tide pools, the scent of rain before a storm, sitting on the pier watching the moon rise, sailing... these are the blood-memory landmarks of my childhood. The lake expresses many moods in its many seasons. The abstract frozen ice caps of winter's crust melts into spring storms, then summer's warm sun, followed by November's howling menace. How to paint one gray sky as it is? I no longer live beside the lake, but every trip back, I always reserve a few quiet hours to go walk the beach alone. My paintings in one way or another speak to my circle of quiet. I hope you find something in them that speaks to yours. “Great Lake” is a tribute to my family and the community that raised me. My currency of memory I spend on you with humble gratitude.”

Laugh your socks off at this fairy-tale pop musical with eclectic styles ranging from 50’s rock ‘n’ roll to 20’s jazz to Celtic and more!

The kingdom of Glump has been falling apart ever since the pampered emperor became wrapped up in his tasteless wardrobe! Not only is he a big-headed clothes-aholic, his three "lovely" daughters are quickly becoming chips off the old blockhead. Enter two con artists, “Wart” and “Hog,” who devise their ingenious plan for fleecing the emperor. Naturally, everyone pretends to see the magic cloth, until the emperor’s serving boy covers him up at the parade, laying bare the facts: the emperor has no clothes on! The serving boy’s honesty is contagious, and the emperor has quite a revelation. He’s been blind to his own selfishness — and nakedness! — until this fateful day. But make way for one more hilarious scene in which his daughters, who haven’t heard the news, appear in their underwear, too! (Tastefully done, we promise!) As the girls angrily chase after “Wart” and “Hog” the emperor vows to his people that he will not only keep his underwear under wraps, but he will reform his ways! And his daughters!

Wrapping up the musical season will be “A Chorus Line.” The musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line, tells of an empty theatre where casting for a new Broadway show is the chance of a lifetime for a group of dancers. It’s what they’ve worked for every day of their lives and it’s their one chance to shine in the spotlight. Winner of nine Tony Awards, including “Best Musical” and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, “A Chorus Line” is the longest-running American Broadway musical ever.

Based on Louisa May Alcott's own family experiences (and novel), “Little Women,” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless and deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written. Now, this wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart. “Little Women” embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit. This powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope -- the sounds of a young America finding its voice.

“The Annual Kiwanis Competition”

On display April 4 - 29

The Ashtabula Arts Center gallery will be filled from wall to wall with the inspiring artworks of area students during April’s annual Kiwanis Competition. Over the years, this annual exhibit has become a favorite with visitors of the Arts Center. The competition, for students of the Ashtabula Area Schools, Saints John and Paul and the Buckeye Schools in grades 7-12, was established over 20 years ago by the Ashtabula Kiwanis Club as a way to encourage and recognize outstanding talent and achievement in the visual arts. Teachers are asked to submit the best of their students’ works to the competition. Entries are judged and scholarships are awarded which allow winners to register for a class of their choice at the Arts Center. The cost of the classes is paid for by a grant from the Kiwanis Club of Ashtabula. Over 300 scholarships have been awarded in the history of this competition. The benefits of this type of recognition program can be far-reaching. Many winners have gone on to receive scholarships to study art or a related field in college. All have had the benefit of having their excellence recognized and rewarded. All entries will be on display in the gallery. Stop in to view this exciting show and see just how many talented students we have living in our community! Admission is free.

Gallery hours: Mon. - Thurs. 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Fri. & Sat. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The gallery is also open before all theater performances and during intermission. Admission to the gallery is free.

Arts Center Holiday Hours

The Arts Center will be closed

Friday, April 6 - By the time you receive this issue of the Arts Center News, hopefully we are experiencing warmer temperatures, more daylight and lots more sunshine - although we really can't complain a lot about our winter this year.

Spring ushers in a sense of renewal and more energy. It also is the time the Arts Center kicks off its annual membership/fund drive for the upcoming fiscal year.

The AAC's membership/fund drive for our current fiscal year (2011-2012) fell a little short of our goal. Our volunteers worked diligently to bring this drive to a successful end, but due to the loss of some of our larger donors and several of our smaller ones as well as economic conditions in general, this was not possible this year. Our annual effort comprises about 20% of the Arts Center's yearly budget of around $625,000.00. The balance of the Center's budget is made up of earned income, grants and gifts. Needless to say, this is extremely important to the overall programming and well being the Center's existence.

If each and every individual receiving the Arts Center News - circulation around 5,000 - would contribute just $25.00 to the Arts Center annually, we could successfully reach our annual fund drive goal. Obviously, we are very appreciative of donations at any level!
We are asking you to PLEASE consider contributing to the Ashtabula Arts Center - we need you!!

You will be receiving a letter in the near future repeating this plea. We try not to hound our patrons over and over again about this need, so we ask that you respond as soon as is feasible for you personally. We know this is a particularly tough time for all of us with our personal costs on the rise. We hope you value the Arts Center and your experiences with us enough to become an invested member of our AAC family.

THANK YOU!!

The Good Life presents "A Star Spangled Election"

The Good Life presents...

their annual spring concert

“A Star Spangled Election”

April 20 & 21at 7:30 p.m.

Includes a line-up of patriotic tunes heard throughout the years including:
The Star Spangled Banner Sing, Sing AmericaTippecanoe and Tyler Too Battle Hymn of The Republic Sidewalks of New York Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy High HopesBridge Over Troubled Water America The Beautiful and many more!
Tickets are $9

Order yours today!

(440) 964-3396
