Even when they were college students with no money, CJ Hurley and Barbara Pierce made a point of creating inspiring, harmonious spaces where they lived. “We had no idea we were setting the stage for the business we’ve since built” says Barbara.

Shown as a detail, “The Forest Evergreen” dining room is a whole-room art commission for a client passionate about nature.

Working collaboratively, CJ and Barbara off er far-ranging design and consultation. CJ, who’s always been an artist, creates mixed-media work, hand executed without the aid of computers. Barbara is an interior designer and expert marketer. For many years, she was in fashion merchandising, a career that took her to Asia. The symbolism and diverse arts of Asia have fascinated CJ since childhood. Then, when the two discovered the Arts & Crafts Movement, Hurley was particularly smitten with the work of Glasgow School artists Margaret Macdonald and her husband, the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Barbara Pierce with a bolt of Art Nouveau-style fabric for a client’s period interior.

When they bought a 1913 Foursquare in Laurelhurst, an Arts & Crafts neighborhood in Portland,Oregon, they turned the dining room into a showcase of European Arts & Crafts decorative techniques. Incorporating themes familiar to rainy Portland, the design features white roses interspersed with raindrops on richly colored walls; the same themes appear in leaded glass and gesso panels. CJ’s work attracted the attention of publications, including this one.

Commissions followed. Barbara began consulting on exterior color palettes. They’ve added sales of notecards and artwork. In 2016, they moved east to another vintage home. “We expected to live here but run a national business,” says Barbara. “Surprisingly, we’ve found local business, too.”

Brett Johnson wasn’t yet 20 when Chris Efker of Craftsmen Hardware asked him for help building his home, but he quickly found he had a knack for the Greene & Greene-inspired pieces Efker sought. He ultimately made all the light fixtures for the coppersmith’s house.

The Gamble House chandelier in African ribbon mahogany and amber iridescent glass is modeled after the Greene & Greene original in Pasadena. Hung from leather straps, it has a minimum suspension of 18″.

Soon, Johnson was building and selling Arts & Crafts lighting and furniture on his own, often replicating pieces to scale from photographs. Twenty years later, he’s internationally known for his fine interpretations of Greene & Greene-style lighting, such as the Gamble House dining-room chandelier, with intricate leaded glass suspended from a large mahogany canopy.

Brett Johnson’s media cabinet in quartersawn white oak is built with pinned mortise-and-tenon construction and ebony pegs. Doors are shown with panes in a lattice-and-vine pattern.

Johnson employs the wide variety of skills and techniques demanded by a Greene & Greene-inspired light fixture—from making the copper foil to shaping the wood elements. “Every corner of every piece of wood is softened by hand,” he says. “It rolls back on itself and has a certain grace to it.”

Johnson’s interpretation of a chandelier at the Blacker House incorporates Japanese motifs on the exaggerated, overhanging roof and a delicately colored vine pattern in the glass work.

His first light was a table lamp, done through trial and error, which he still owns. After that one he visited Greene & Greene houses to examine fixtures and furniture in person. He generally works in the same woods used by early Arts & Crafts practitioners: quartersawn oak and quartersawn mahogany, also known as ribbon grain, with ebony for accents. He makes every component in every light fixture himself, including selecting, cutting, and fitting glass; creating the copper foil to hold glass in place; and cutting and shaping the leather suspension straps found on some fixtures.

A custom fixture has a trio of stained-glass lanterns suspended from a mahogany canopy.

Johnson estimates he finishes 100 to 200 pieces in a year. He finds he works best on his own, with just a shop dog for an assistant, because “it takes years to teach somebody how to do all of this.”

Kevin Rodel in his workshop, in Maine.

Kevin Rodel is arguably the dean of modern Arts & Crafts furniture makers. Not only has he been building furniture in that mode for more than 40 years, but he’s frequently written for Fine Woodworking magazine, led furniture-making workshops, and co-authored the influential book Arts & Crafts Furniture: from Classic to Contemporary, too.

After serving an apprenticeship of sorts, in the 1970s, with Thos. Moser of Maine, he discovered the Arts & Crafts Movement through contemporary proponents including David Berman of Trustworth Studios and the late John Burrows of J.R. Burrows. “They got me hooked on Arts & Crafts.”

Details on Rodel’s Glasgow desk include heart-shaped inlays of maple, pewter, and dyed wood.

In furniture, it’s a style that lends itself to both personal interpretation and innovation, he says. Early Arts & Crafts furniture makers incorporated other materials: tile, glasswork, leather. Rodel often builds striking tables with glasswork panels in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, dining tables with a double row of tiles running down the center—and, like Greene & Greene, art-glass light fixtures suspended from leather straps.

Rodel refers to his Wrightian Mayan floor and table lamps as “Mid-century Mayan.” They’re composed of many small, individually cut blocks of wood.

Rodel is a one-man shop working on a commission-only basis. All wood pieces are built with mortise-and-tenon construction, using hand-cut dovetails and kerf tenons. While he enjoys making pieces with spare lines, he often composes pieces of astounding complexity, like his Prairie desk. Crafted in cherry or quartersawn oak, it features leather inlays and small, windowpane-like accents just under the lip of the top.

Available in cherry or oak with different leather panels, the Prairie Desk is a masterful composition of intersecting vertical and horizontal components.

The glass-top Ikebana table expresses his interest in Asian design. It incorporates Glasgow School-inspired leaded glass and motifs.

Rodel’s Ikebana table. The jin-di-sugi carving technique in cypress under the glass top was pioneered by Arts & Crafts designer John Bradstreet.

Kevin Rodel, now in his 70s, says he’s booked for the rest of the year. “I’m not pushing myself. I’m also trying to schedule time to work on my own designs.”

Mayflower Wallpaper aims to enhance the atmosphere of historic homes with their thoughtfully designed patterns.

mayflowerwallpaper.com
401-824-6968

Mayflower Wallpaper is a family-run studio creating historically inspired patterns for homes that value craftsmanship, character, and a strong sense of place. From our design studio in coastal Rhode Island, we develop patterns that draw on the architectural and decorative traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries—Victorian, Gothic Revival, and Arts & Crafts among them. Each collection reflects our shared belief that wallpaper should deepen a room’s atmosphere, not simply dress its walls.

Our designs come to life through close collaboration with a dedicated mill in Pennsylvania, where every roll is produced with careful attention to color, texture, and print fidelity. By keeping our manufacturing domestic and tightly coordinated with our design process, we’re able to ensure consistency across runs and uphold the level of detail that historic interiors deserve. This partnership allows us to blend the warmth of traditional methods with modern precision, resulting in wallpapers that feel both timeless and reliably made.

The Victorian patterns we create celebrate intricate ornamentation—bold damasks, rhythmic florals, and layered motifs that suit parlors, dining rooms, and entry halls with original moldings and tall ceilings. Our Gothic-inspired designs lean into architectural drama, echoing the pointed arches, tracery, and moody palettes that define the style. These papers lend presence to libraries, stair halls, and quiet reading rooms. For Arts & Crafts homes, we offer patterns grounded in simplicity and harmony: stylized leaves, repeating botanicals, and strong verticals that complement natural materials and built-in woodwork. Each design is developed with an understanding of how pattern interacts with period architecture—the way a motif wraps a corner, frames a doorway, or unifies a series of rooms.

Because Mayflower Wallpaper is a small team, every collection is shaped with personal attention from concept to final roll. We work closely with homeowners, designers, and preservation-minded renovators who want wallpaper that respects the character of an old house while giving it renewed life. Our approach is rooted in the belief that good wallpaper supports the narrative of a home: it should feel considered, lived-with, and suited to the light and proportions of the spaces it inhabits.

The fifteen images shown alongside this copy offer a window into how our patterns behave in real interiors—how saturated tones can warm a north-facing room, how a large-scale motif can enliven a simple stairwell, or how a quiet Arts & Crafts repeat can bring cohesion to a bungalow’s main floor. These installations reflect the range of styles we love and the variety of homes our customers are restoring, refreshing, and honoring.

Whether you’re stewarding a 1900 Victorian, revitalizing an early Craftsman bungalow, or simply seeking a wallpaper with depth and story, we hope our designs become part of your home’s next chapter. Each roll is made with care, and each pattern is created with the belief that history and design are at their best when they work together.

Since 2005, we’ve offered expert advice on all aspects of home: kitchen and bathrooms to carpet, fine furniture and pottery, to millwork, roofing, doors and windows, plumbing, floors, hardware and lighting. The Resource Guide, now a larger annual “bookazine” with enhanced editorial chapters and beautiful photography, helps Arts & Crafts aficionados find the artisans and products to help them build, renovate, and decorate their bungalow, Craftsman, Prairie, Tudor Revival, or Arts & Crafts Revival home.

Designing houses for infill lots in Craftsman neighborhoods, architect Dale Peek fell in love with the simplicity and details of the period. His own remade fireplace uses contemporary art tiles in an ensemble of period colors. Gridley+Graves

It all started, in my opinion, with the restoration of houses from the Arts & Crafts or bungalow era. Quaint elements were rescued or reinstalled by smitten owners; others added period-correct features that may never have been in the house, as they undertook a general upgrade with the advantage of hindsight: It’s always the best of an era or a style that is revived. Soon, bland builders’ boxes from the 1950s through 1980s were being made over as Craftsman Bungalows complete with big front gables and a colonnade inside. Builders of new houses, too, jumped on the bungalow bandwagon. A lot of the recent work will prove to be timeless.

Inspired by the Gamble House, a stained-glass triptych elevates the entry of a late-20th- century house remodeled in a grand California Arts & Crafts idiom.
William Wright

Why do so many components and motifs of the bungalow era speak to us today? It may be because elements of Arts & Crafts design are easy to identify and are adaptable. For example, they do not require high ceilings. Woodwork may be painted or executed in clear-finish hardwood or fir.

Art-glass windows, square and high in the bungalow mode, are the focal point in a view through the new oak colonnade. The glass pattern interprets the ginkgo motif in a set of 1913 china.
Gridley+Graves

Such simple forms and unostentatious detailing make it a popular style. Such rectilinear elements as square columns and butt-jointed trim are relatively easy and inexpensive to duplicate. Furthermore, documentation is readily available in old millworks catalogs, many of them available online to view or download. All of this makes Craftsman a favorite vocabulary for new construction and home makeovers.

Albeit in a wide variety of expressions, several key elements of the era have made a comeback in the past 25 years. Chief among them are room-dividing colonnades, breakfast nooks, panel or skeleton batten wainscots, staircases with square spindles, painted kitchens, and fireplaces with art-tile surrounds.

Breakfast nooks were a darling of planbook designers. In a 1910 chalet–bungalow, the door to a service porch was widened to create a period-inspired nook. The big corbels and stained glass are salvage. Gridley+Graves

Clean, space-saving built-ins have found new favor. While some prefer A&C Revival kitchens featuring the quarter-sawn oak and art glass borrowed from more public rooms, others embrace plain white cabinets, linoleum, and those cutout doors under the sink, which provided ventilation and deterred mice. Breakfast nooks and built-in banquettes may be more popular now than they were in 1920, when house-plan books offered these things as an add-on upgrade.

Wide archways between rooms create an early version of the open floor plan, making a small house feel spacious.
In the dining room, a high wainscot capped by a plate rail once again gives instant antiquity and a place to display collectibles. Flanking benches at the hearth create a cozy inglenook suggesting the Old World.

Decorative conventions have returned, too, including art glass, period hardware and lighting, and wallpaper friezes. Stylized roses, ginkgo leaves, dragonflies, owls, and other motifs are used in revival art pottery and home textiles. Arts & Crafts continues to find new admirers.

For a new kitchen, a decorative wall of tile is a lighthearted foil to the gravitas of hardwood cabinets rendered in the style of Greene & Greene. A tile mural and leaded-glass doors lend interest.

Leaded-glass doors display glassware, dishes, and pottery in the buffet, which also stores table settings and linens near the dining table.
The house is in an old town on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York. Built in 1985, it had a vaguely Arts & Crafts revival air with Japanese influence. New owners wanted to push the design more toward Arts & Crafts. The kitchen, especially, needed a do-over; it had been a multi-purpose mashup of kitchen, laundry, closets, and family space. Crown Point Cabinetry took a lead role in the room’s renovation.

“The owner found us at the Architectural Digest Show, on the pier, in New York City,” says Fred Puksta, senior designer at Crown Point. “She had an idea of what she wanted and collaborated with our designer David Messier [now retired].”

The wall-hung corner cabinet was designed with custom shelving for the client’s dishes and glassware. courtesy Crown Point Cabinetry

“I have always been attracted to period Bungalows,” says Mary, the homeowner. “The design evolved from there,” given her knowledge of Pasadena houses and the residential work of Frank Lloyd Wright.

“Mary wanted a cloud-lift motif,” adds Puksta, referencing a rail detail used by Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene. Other must-haves included a large stove and large refrigerator, two sinks, art tile, and a separate dining area with additional, glass-front cabinets.

TIMELESS MATERIALS

From the red-oak flooring (original to the house) to cabinets and finishes, every element is time-tested and of high quality. The tile is hand-crafted. The stove hood is formed from stainless steel with bands of polished copper.

Pantry cabinets surround the large, built-in refrigerator. The floor-to-ceiling cabinet at the end of the stove wall holds additional storage and pull-out drawers. courtesy Crown Point Cabinetry

Kitchen cabinets feature Crown Point Cabinetry’s Monterey door with square inset face frames. The wood is Sapele with the Nutmeg finish. (Sapele is no longer available; the designers suggest cherry with a stain for a similar appearance.) Crown Point used pillow-top contrasting square pegs throughout. A buffet and a bar stand opposite from each other in the dining area.

An additional furniture-like cabinet is used as a cocktail bar. courtesy Crown Point Cabinetry

Tile is the other style-defining characteristic of the room. All of it is from Motawi Tileworks of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The client asked for a scenic rather than abstract or repetitive design; the tile mural’s name is ‘Pine Landscape’. Accent colors punctuate the stove wall: Storm Blue, Lime, Sand, Autumn Brown, Cream, and Burnt Sienna.

The client had seen examples of historic cloudlift woodworking details and asked for that motif in the cabinets: Note the step pattern in the rails. The countertop material is Cambria® Quartz, in Canterbury.
courtesy Crown Point Cabinetry

“In terms of quality, appearance, and function, I’m extremely satisfied!” says Mary. “The new kitchen design honors the house; because of its artisan appeal and warmth, it will stand the test of time, an idea integral to the Arts & Crafts philosophy.”
