Call to Artists for Liberty Arts Festival Logo Design

The Liberty Arts Festival Committee (made up of the Liberty Arts Commission and Historic Downtown Liberty, Inc.) announces a call for logo design concepts for Liberty’s first arts festival with the theme of “Liberty Arts Squared.” Proposals are requested from graphic designers, artists and students for an appropriate logo to be used to promote the festival, which will become an annual event. This logo should be an appropriate trademark for this event.

A cash prize of $150.00 will be presented to the artist/ designer of the logo that is selected by an Arts Festival Committee appointed selection jury.

The KCK Arts Network is sponsoring a free arts street festival. Two blocks of Minnesota Avenue (KCK’s main downtown street) will be blocked off for festival artists, vendors, music and activities. The event includes: gallery openings for 2nd Fridays exhibits, one city block of artist vendors (between 7th and 8th Streets), music, street performers, puppets, children’s art activities, a giant participative mural, food and drink vendors and downtown restaurant participation.

Space for artists is FREE . . . bring your own set-up for your art. Set-up must be completed before the 4:00 pm start. Tear down is at 9:00 pm. We have reserved a large rain location in case of inclement weather.

Alcott Arts Center's Second Saturday/Open Jam KC

Musicians bring your instruments and come jam with the other fellow musicians.
A reception will be held at 6pm . Our featured Artist this month is Levi Jiron. Levi was born March of 1977 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is full-blooded (4/4) Isleta Pueblo Indian. He grew up on the Isleta Reservation, which is located just south of Albuquerque. He was raised on his grandparents farm and grew up helping his grandfather in the fields and tending to their animals.

Levi attended elementary school on the reservation but attended middle and high school in the neighboring community of Los Lunas, New Mexico. He graduated from High School in 1995 from Los Lunas High School.

In 1999 Levi, his wife, and son moved to Odessa, MO. When they moved to Missouri Levi and Lori both attended University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Levi graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in studio painting. Levi also found his love for creating sculptures during this time.

Levi has had artwork shown throughout, North Carolina, Missouri, and Kansas. Levi currently lives in Odessa with his wife and two sons, Ryder (11) and Cooper (1). He continues to create, show and sell artwork. You can learn more about Levi at levijiron.com. This is Levi's first time exhibiting at the Alcott or in Kansas City, Kansas. Come enjoy the blending of all elements to form these spectacular works of Art!

One of Downtown KCK's many strengths is the fascinating history. Some believe that the spirits from the past continue to linger. Ghost Tours of Kansas is a privately owned business operating in 9 cities in Kansas. Cathy Breidenthal has retired after 22 years as executive director of the local YWCA. As the current chair of Downtown Shareholders, Cathy has contributed enormously to the success of Downtown revitalization efforts, notably the passage of the Self Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) for Downtown Kansas City, Kansas.

Under her leadership at the YWCA, a capital campaign was completed resulting in a fitness center, a coffee café, a community meeting area and public art space. Breidenthal said during her tenure at the YWCA, she has been an advocate and model for positive change in the community by continuing to bring people together and seeking a common ground to address critical issues.The YWCA continues to serve diverse women and girls through programs addressing health and career development. Breidenthal said she has served organizations as both a policy maker and an administrator and believes it is most important to distinguish the differences in these roles.

Cathy also served as chair of the Kaw Valley Arts Board and the first Convention and Tourism Bureau of Wyandotte County and has filed for a position on the Kansas City, Kansas, Community College Board of Trustees. With spring here and warmer weather for enjoying the walk, several local restaurants have joined the KCK 2^nd Fridays ArtWalk galleries in showing art, or supporting the walk with specials and entertainment. Another event to be mentioned is the move of Imago Dei Arts Center from its Armstrong Street location to the Granada Theater, which they recently purchased. KCK Artist - Lacey Lewis

It is time again to recognize another artist from our community that has had a major impact on the Arts in Kansas City Kansas. She has also contributed, unselfishly to the promotion and establishment of other artist. Lacey Lewis is a Figurative Artist that moved here from Syracuse, New York. In just a few short years, Lacey has established herself as an emerging talent not just here in Kansas City, Kansas, but throughout the metro area, and the Midwest region. Lacey has received several awards and honors for her work, which hangs in a number of private collections. She is, represented by the Hillard Gallery in Kansas City, MO and the Strecker - Nelson in Manhattan, KS. Her work is amazing. Check out her website and see for yourself, www.lacey-lewis.com/.

As talented, an artist as Lacey is I think what I enjoy most about her is her willingness to help other artist. She has been a major force in establishing lines of communication between our local artists. She started groups.yahoo.com/group/kcksarts/, a site for artist, art lovers and lovers of artist. The blog site you are currently reading, and most importantly so far, was the offer to create simple websites for local artist to display their work. The sites are beautiful and stylized to fit each artist. In three short months, Lacey has created an intergraded network for local artist to share their thoughts, art events and meetings with one another. The websites have allowed local artists to reach a much larger audience, how important is that in today’s market. Thank you Lacey for all that you do.

... but it's a great Tuesday for art in KCK.

Tonight, at the YWCA, there's a free screening of What I Want My Words to Do to You! The film is presented by the YWCA, Arts in Prison Inc. and the UMKC Women's Center.

The documentary follows a writing program, led by playwright Eve Ensler, in a women's prison. The film ends with a performance of inmate-written work by a cast that includes Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei and Rosie Perez. It starts at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

While you're there, check out Russell Easterwood's paintings in the YWCA's Sixth Street Gallery.

Imago Dei, open Tuesdays through Saturdays, is showing Mark Weber's Landscapes of Grace through the end of the month. The gallery's open until 5:30 p.m, so it's possible to swing by after work, see Weber's work, find a bite to eat downtown and then head to the YWCA.
