The Renaissance Society presents an exhibition by Matt Saunders, February 28 to April 11, 2010

In drawings, paintings, short films, and photographic works, Saunders recasts images, often taken from film or television, into new narratives about portraiture and spectatorship. At the same time, he pushes boundaries between media to tell a parallel story of how images are made, are repeated and are embodied in materials. Saunders' subject matter is a diverse cast of characters, including an early Los Alamos scientist, a largely forgotten East German actress, a silent film star, and the highest paid British television actor of the 60's. As a group, these characters span World War II and the Cold War, providing a kind of stuttering record of 20^th Century lives. It is an exhibition about painting, and also about moving pictures, how they are found, loved, and lost.

The Strange Case of William Mumler Spirit Photographer

As Kaplan's case study of William Mumler shows, faith in the truth-telling abilities of photography has always been accompanied by skepticism about the objectivity of the photographer. Beginning in the early 1860s, Mumler became famous in Boston and New York for taking "spirit photographs" in which ghostly images of departed family members or friends appear in portraits of living subjects. All photographs are, as Roland Barthes and others have argued, ghostly images of the past. Their very ghostliness inspires narratives that are in turn essential to understanding that past. Bernheim, Caligari, Mabuse: Cinema and Hypnotism

Andriopoulos is the author of Possessed: Hypnotic Crimes, Corporate Fiction, and the Invention of Cinema (University of Chicago Press, 2008,) which won the SLSA Michelle Kendrick award for best academic book on literature, science, and the arts. Tracing a preoccupation with mesmerism and possession through the era of silent films, Andriopoulos pays particular attention to the terrifying notion of murder committed against one's will. Films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler famously portrayed the hypnotist's seemingly unlimited power on the movie screen. Blending theoretical sophistication with scrupulous archival research and insightful film analysis, Possessed adds a new dimension to our understanding of today's anxieties about the onslaught of visual media and the expanding reach of vast corporations that seem to absorb our own identities. Hamza Walker has developed a unique and important voice in scholarship about contemporary art. Through his curatorial choices, he has introduced new artists to international audiences. In his insightful essays, he thinks outside the box, extending the boundaries of how art works are perceived. Since 1994, The Renaissance Society has benefited from his intellectual prowess, adventurous spirit, and witty charm. We are thrilled to congratulate Hamza on receiving this well-deserved prize.

Please join The Renaissance Society for an opening reception for Anna Shteynshleyger, Sunday January 3, 2010, from 4:00 to 7:00pm. There will be a talk with the artist in Kent Hall room 120, from 5:00 to 6:00pm.
Chicago-based artist Shteynshleyger belongs to a generation of photographers whose work is notable for its formal beauty and technical execution. Twenty-three works poignantly document Shteynshleyger's life over the past several years. During this period Shteynshleyger renegotiated her relationship to Orthodox Judaism, which she began to practice at the age of 16 after moving to the United States from Moscow where she was born. Too personal to qualify as documentary of the Orthodox Jewish community, Shteynshleyger's work spans a variety of genres -- portraits, still-life, landscape, and interiors. The images display a sensitivity of their subjects that is as questioning as it is knowing.

The reading coincides with the release of All the Whiskey in Heaven, a thirty-year anthology. In addition, the reading will celebrate the recent release of Radical Poetics and Secular Jewish Culture, a collection of essays in which poets and critics, Bernstein among them, address the question of what constitutes radical poetry written by Jews defined as ‘secular', and whether or not there is a Jewish component or dimension to radical and modernist poetic practice in general. Trained at Yale, Shteynshleyger belongs to a generation of photographers whose work is notable for its formal beauty and technical execution. The exhibition will feature approximately 18 works that poignantly document Shteynshleyger's life over the past several years. During that period, Shteynshleyger has had to renegotiate her relationship to Orthodox Judaism, which she had practiced since the age of 16, after moving to the United States from Moscow where she was born. Too personal to qualify as documentary of the Orthodox Jewish community, Shteynshleyger's work spans a variety of genres—portraits, still-life, landscape, and interiors—all of which will be included in the exhibition. The portraits and interiors display a sensitivity that is as questioning as it is knowing of its subjects.

Choreographer Megan Rhyme has spent the last six months researching neuroscience and conversing with neuroscientist Miriam Sachs, PhD at University California – San Diego. The result is a work about body mapping, a term used to describe the spatial distribution of neurons in the motor cortex of the brain and the patterns of neurons that reflect our movement experiences. A community of four people struggle with the creation of new body maps and the constant change present in the maps and themselves, and reveal the pressures and emotional burdens we put on ourselves when learning.

The Renaissance Society presents an exhibition by

Allan Sekula, September 20 to December 13, 2009

The Renaissance Society will present an exhibition of new work by photographer Allan Sekula. This new series, titled Polonia and Other Fables, critically documents and examines the social impact of global economics. Always aiming to position his work within an exhibition's local community, Sekula will develop this project to focus on Chicago's rich labor history, in particular on the city's large Polish immigrant population, and The University of Chicago's famous lineage of economic theorists.

In addition to being outstanding documentary photography in its own right, Sekula's work is also a critique of the genre. Sekula's examination of the theory and practice of photography is as important as his inquiry into labor history and economics. Central to his work is an interest in documentation—as pictorial form, method of recording, narrative device, historical memory, and medium of social engagement. Sekula's work poses the rhetorical question, "Is it possible to discuss photography as a medium separate from the thing being photographed?" Put another way, is a photograph in and of itself capable of being self-reflexive while critiquing its subject? Sekula's answer is no. An integral part of his practice is writing, an activity he has maintained since the outset of his career 35 years ago. His writings expose the inherent limits of a documentary genre based purely on photographic imagery. Together, Sekula's images and text constitute the most trenchant and rigorous photographic discourse on globalization.

The BECA Foundation (www.thebecafoundation.org) has recently posted 2 new Calls to Artists + Designers and has begun accepting applications for its Artist in Residence Program:

Call to Artists + Designers: Receive Deadline is June 25, 2009: The theme and title of this exhibition, 'Money is the Root of All ~~Evil~~ Carnival Barkers', was chosen to create an entertaining commentary on the historical and contemporary pitch people of industry, who we call carnival barkers. Money has always been a powerful motivator of dealers. Maybe it's the recession or maybe the carnival barker's voices are just getting louder but we have definitely noticed an increase in the hawking of everything from infomercial products to art. The hawking of one's wares could be called the world's second oldest profession and while early carnival barkers shouted their best persuasions to you to as you walked by their cart or stand, today's carnival barkers have a much wider distribution for their barking, delivered through electronic and printed text, television and radio.

Whether or not the products/wares have value is irrelevant. Today's carnival barkers have taken their predecessors cues and elevated their barking into a true work of hilarious absurdity. Carnival barkers on infomercials hawk and over hype everything from food slicers, cosmetics, clothing, cars and trucks, knives, gadgets of all kind, creams and pills promising the fountain of youth and more recently there's been an increase of mega-hype around the sale of art. Art dealers and related carnival barkers are hawking their new, up and coming artists as 'renowned' and as 'art stars' regardless of whether or not the term is applicable beyond their pocketbook's hopeful imagination.

From the humorous and ridiculous to the absurd, carnival barkers and the methods they employ to distribute their messages offer much fodder for the creation of new works. For this exhibition, we're looking for artists and designers to create visual commentary on carnival barkers from every industry and their historical craft from a contemporary perspective.

The exhibition will be held at BECA gallery, located at 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA, in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District across from the Contemporary Arts Center. The exhibition dates are from August 8 – September 6, 2009 with a closing artist reception on Saturday, September 5, 2009 from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition catalog will be available beginning August 3, 2009.

Artists selected for this group exhibition will be amongst the first artists included in The BECA Foundation's new curated Artist and Designer Global Registry set to launch this Fall 2009. The Registry will eventually contain artists and works selected by a variety of curators from around the globe and made publicly available to writers, curators, gallery directors and collectors. This Registry will be the first curated global digital database of its kind that features both emerging artists as well as emerging designers on the leading edge of what's next in contemporary art + design. The first installment of CURATE THIS!, held in 2008, was an experimental success with over 100 artists and over 400 'guest curators' from 9 countries participating. We're looking forward to even more participation from around the globe via CURATE THIS! 2009. Once again we will be enlisting the input of art enthusiasts from around the world via an online juried event which allows anyone from anywhere in the world with an internet connection and email access to select their favorite 10 artists from the compiled selection of submitted works. On October 14 and 15, 2009 art enthusiasts from around the world will view the works submitted by artists from all corners of the globe and will vote to choose their favorite 10 artists of CURATE THIS! 2009. This year's CURATE THIS! exhibition is being held in conjunction with PhotoNOLA 2009 (www.photonola.org). As such, we are seeking submissions of photography based works including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, installation, photography, design and functional art. Those artists whom the guest curators' select as their top 10 artists will have their works featured in the exhibition CURATE THIS! 2009 at BECA gallery and in the upcoming 2009 edition of the publication titled, CURATE THIS! 2009. Artist in Residence Program: This program was created as a complimentary supplement to the organization's core emerging contemporary art exhibition program. Each year, 6-10 monthly studio residencies will be granted to one or two emerging artists or designers per month and take place at BECA gallery/Ju-Ju Space Studio in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District in New Orleans, LA, USA. Each Artist in Residence receives a non-living, semi-private studio space for a period of 4 weeks culminating in both a public Artist Talk and a public Open-Studio event at the end of the residency. Artists in Residence are also featured on The BECA Foundation's website and introduced to art enthusiasts, curators, writers, collectors, galleries and other related arts organizations via BECA's public visiting hours, e-newsletters, announcements, printed literature and other outreach. What: BECA gallery's 2009 Summer Show titled 12x12x122 is an experimental, gallery packed show of 488 unframed works on canvas sized 12x12 inches (30.5 cm x30.5 cm) at a stretcher depth of no more than 1.5 inches. Works need not be flat but all of it must be secure on the canvas and not extend beyond the 12x12 inches (30.5 cm x30.5 cm) size.

Where: BECA gallery, 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 (Gallery Directors will choose up to 10 exhibiting artists to feature at www.becagallery.com)

Why: The purpose of this non-juried experimental, group exhibition '12x12x122' is to discover and highlight new approaches by emerging contemporary artists, as well as those established artists who are stretching their work into unfamiliar territory, working within the parameters of a format of 12x12 inches on canvas. We are encouraging artists to experiment. The only criteria is that the work must be unframed on (or somehow be incorporated into/onto) stretched canvas size 12x12 inches (30.5 cm x30.5 cm) (no smaller, no larger) with a stretcher depth of no more than 1.5 inches.

Call for Exhibition Proposals

“Anatomy in the Gallery,” a rotating exhibition program at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, showcases medically themed contemporary art within the unique context of the Museum’s historical collections and exhibits. The program was begun in 1998 to help fulfill the Museum’s mission of enriching its visitors’ lives by enhancing their knowledge and understanding of surgery and related sciences.

“Anatomy in the Gallery” will be accepting proposals from artists and curators for its 2010 exhibition calendar until April 17, 2009. The medical theme is open to interpretation, but figure studies without any additional medical content do not qualify. In 1992, X-102 (Experimental 102), otherwise known as Underground Resistance – the Detroit-based electronic musical trio of Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood – set out to create a musical project about the planet Saturn and its rings in a full-length LP entitled X-102 discovers the Rings Of Saturn (Tresor). X-102 attempted to musically describe the physical make-up and content of the never-before seen planet and each of its significant rings known as A, B, C, E and F. Fifteen years later, Banks and Mills have produced a brand new musical soundtrack, featuring re-mastered original compositions paired with a visual version of the project and breathtaking images from the NASA Cassini/Huygen exploratory mission, which visited and documented Saturn and its moons. Musician and director Jeff Mills will discuss the project after the screening. The approximate running time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. This Ohm Multimedia Series program is supported by Axis Records and GammaPlayer.com.

We're seeking what's new + what's next in the categories of one-of-a-kind and limited edition highly innovative furniture and related accessories, lighting, haute couture and related accessories, body adornments and other functional presentations. ARS SCIENTIA DEBUTS AT THE CHICAGO CULTURAL
CENTER JAN. 12

Exciting new series, part of Science Chicago,
combines art & science

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents Ars Scientia, a
series of conversations and salons which explores the fascinating
intersection of art and science, and professional collaborations that
have sprung from it. The public is invited to learn about the work of
pioneering artists, dancers, musicians and culinary artists, and the
biologists, neuroscientists, mathematicians and engineers who have
partnered with them. The series is held bimonthly on Monday evenings
from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, beginning on January 12, 2009.

Ars Scientia is part of the year long Science Chicago festival, and
will be held at The Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St.
Admission is free. The series title, Ars Scientia, is based on a Latin
phrase, ars sine scientia nihil est, loosely translated as Art without
Knowledge is Nothing, which the late artist Leon Golub had painted on
his studio wall. Science Chicago is a ambitious, collaborative,
year-long initiative, that brings together more than 80 of the area's
institutions to host thousands of cutting-edge science programs.

The series features two components: conversations and salons.
Conversations feature more formal presentations between actual
collaborators, followed by discussion and Q+A, while salons offer
opportunities for more informal presentations by artists and scientists
interested in the idea of collaboration around specific topics. "The
conversations and salons will reveal the depth of creativity found in
science, and the surprising amount of technical expertise that informs
our most creative cultural practices," says series curator Barbara
Koenen.

The Chemistry of Cooking
January 12

Chef Homaro Cantu is well known for making food that snaps, crackles,
freezes and evaporates into thin air. Science, nature and technology
have inspired Chef Cantu's culinary creations at Moto Restaurant and
the unique inventions at his company, Cantu Designs. Learn how Chef
Cantu and his partner at Cantu Designs, scientist Dr. Linda Kawano,
collaborate, share ideas and meld science, art and business.

Structuring Change
February 9

Artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle's technically sophisticated and formally
elegant investigations employ forms and systems found in nature -- like
clouds, icebergs and DNA -- to address issues ranging from immigration
to cloning to gun violence and climate change He will converse with
computational scientist Mark Hereld, Senior Fellow in the Computation
Institute (Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago) and
artist Siebren Versteeg.

The Magic of Perception
March 9

Magician Apollo Robbins and neuroscientist Dr. Susana Martinez-Conde of
Martinez-Conde Laboratory of Neural Science in Arizona collaborated on a
study of perception -- how do we know what is really happening?
Robbins, a "professional thief," once pick-pocketed President Carter's
Secret Service escort -- keys, IDs and wallets -- in a demonstration of
the vulnerability of our perception.

Exploring Environmentalism
January 26

Artists Tiffany Holmes and Frances Whitehead and choreographer Carrie
Hanson tackle major environmental issues with surprising and concrete
results. Whitehead is working with plant scientists, meterologists, and
urban planners to use city parks as climate change laboratories.
Hanson's company, The Seldoms, recently premiered an entire performance
based on consumption, waste and landfills. Holmes coined the term
"eco-visualisation" to describe an emerging art movement that is devoted
to using information visualization techniques to get the general public
interested in ecological issues. The artists will be joined by
environmental scientist Liam Heneghan, co director of the Institute for
Arts and Culture at DePaul University.

Pushing the Boundaries of Biology
February 23

Artist Eduardo Kac captured the world's imagination with a glowing
fluorescent bunny and introduced the concept of "bio-art", while Alison
Ruttan's drawings and films of bonabo monkeys led to surprising
recognition that the creation of "hairstyles" may be as much a marker of
intelligence as are signs of tool-making. The artists will be joined by
behavioural biologist Dr. Dario Maestripieri (University of Chicago) and
plant biologist Dr. Neil Olsziewski (University of Minnesota).

The Evanston Art Center, a non-profit, community based visual arts
organization is hosting an exhibition, "Heating Up" scheduled for
October 5- November 9, 2008. This is an exhibition of artists who are
creating a cultural discourse around the topics of climate change and
ecosystem degredation. We are currently looking for submissions from
artists until August 15, 2008. The artists may use a range of methods
and media-including installations, drawings, sculpture, photography
and/or projects that involve the community. The artists in "Heating
Up" will challenge viewers to initiate dialogues and engage in actions
that can help heal our planet's fragile ecosystems.

Climate Clock Initiative Call for Ideas

The Climate Clock Global Initiative is seeking ideas from artist-led teams to create a major artwork entitled Climate Clock, which will measure changes in greenhouse gas levels, and be the first in a series of global projects calling attention to climate change. Climate Clock will be an instrument of long-term measurement and will collect data for 100 years. The artwork will be located in downtown San Jose, California, Silicon Valley's city center, and will be a collaboration between an artist-led team composed of artists, international and Silicon Valley engineers and other creative professionals who are working with climate measurement and data visualization. It is anticipated that the budget for the construction of Climate Clock will be between $5 and $15 million, depending upon the scope of the final proposal.

CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

"Anatomy in the Gallery," a temporary exhibition program at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, showcases medically themed contemporary art within the context of the Museum's historical exhibits. The program is currently accepting exhibition proposals for 2008, its tenth anniversary year.

The medical theme is open to interpretation, but figure studies without additional medical content do not qualify. Individual artists, groups, and curators are eligible to submit proposals. Work in any medium will be considered; however, the physical limitations of the galleries (on the fourth floor of an older building) may factor into the committee’s decisions.

Epidemic Art at Dogmatic this Saturday!

Christa Donner's artist-made book on alternative anatomy and wall collage
exploring the viral nature of physical and psychological epidemics will be
part of the group exhibition "Narratives, Sequences, Characters," opening at
Dogmatic Gallery, opening Saturday, May 13th.

The exhibition will run one week only (though May 20th), with a public
opening reception from 6-10pm. Dogmatic is located in the Butcher Shop
artist's space at 1319 Lake St, 3rd Floor. The gallery is open from non -

art gallery, is seeking applications from artists and curators for its
2006-2007 exhibition season. SPACES exhibitions feature artists who push
boundaries by experimenting with new forms of expression and innovative uses
of media. Exhibition proposals and artwork dealing with any theme is
welcome; however, three ideas are highlighted for the 2006-2007 season:

* Artists collaborating with scientists to produce art dealing with
scientific experimentation and/or inventions;
