TRUST NO ONE

Following the acclaimed New York run, Theatre for a New Audience’s production of Othello comes to Intiman Theatre. Director Arin Arbus ignites Seattle’s summer with her adroit sense of storytelling and gift for language. When Othello and Desdemona elope to consummate their undeniable passion, Iago sees his chance to destroy the Moor he secretly hates. Iago convinces Othello his bride is having a tawdry affair with Lieutenant Cassio. Othello becomes enraged, Iago fuels the scandal and Othello’s world comes crashing down. And a handkerchief undoes them all.

Intiman presents the critically acclaimed Theatre for a New Audience production of Othello, one of the best-received stagings of a Shakespeare play in the last decade

“This is among the most sensitively directed, eloquently designed and impeccably acted productions of a Shakespeare tragedy that the city has seen in years… Ms. Arbus allows this most taut and tense of Shakespeare’s tragedies to weave its inexorable spell simply by letting the language breathe and the drama unfold at a quietly accelerating rhythm.” – New York Times

Where?:
INTIMAN THEATRE
201 Mercer St
Seattle Center
Seattle, WA 98109

When?: Now through August 2nd. Call for tickets: 206.269.1900

If you’re starting UW this fall, you will quickly find that there are literally thousands of activities, opportunities, and resources available for students, meaning you! The question is.. where does one start? How does one pick classes? How does one get involved? This place can seem overwhelming, and I’m sure you’re starting to ask yourself… where do I fit in?

First off… if you have an inkling about what you want to major in, or if there is a subject that you want to take classes is, it is never too early to meet with an academic adviser in that department. Swing by and talk to them about class recommendations, tell them what subjects or topics you loved studying in high school, and ask them for some academic advice to start making plans for your first year. They are here for YOU! And they love talking with students, really.

Pick classes wisely and thoughtfully. 180 credits may sound like a lot, but before you know it, four years will be gone and you’ll be on to the next chapter of your life. UW is a great place to be, and you worked hard to get here, so take your time to pick classes that will be meaningful to you, and get to know your professors. You get to decide what you want to learn now! Be proactive about your education!

Midori
At age 11, Midori made her historic debut as a surprise guest artist with Zubin Mehta at the New York Philharmonic’s 1982 New Year’s Eve concert. She has since established a record of achievement which sets her apart as a master musician, innovator, and a champion of the developmental potential of children. Highlights of the 2009–2010 season include new music recitals and workshops in San Francisco and at Princeton University; tours of the U.S., Europe and Asia; collaborations with conductors including Carlos Kalmar, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Carlos Prieto, Carl St. Clair and Leonard Slatkin; and increasing her already extensive commitment to music education in her capacity as Chair of the Strings Department at USC’s Thornton School of Music.

Midori is founder of Midori & Friends, a non-profit organization in New York which brings music education programs to thousands of underprivileged children each year. She also founded Music Sharing (Japan) and Partners in Performance (U.S.), two programs which also bring music closer to the lives of people who may not otherwise have involvement in the arts. Midori established an Orchestra Residencies Program to strengthen ties between professional and youth orchestras. Additionally, Midori conducts master classes with young people all over the world. Her two most recent recordings are an album of Sonatas by Bach and Bartók with pianist Robert McDonald and The Essential Midori, a two-disc compilation. Both are issued by Sony BMG Masterworks, for whom she records exclusively.

The people and places that Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) brought to life in his paintings were full of personal associations for him—they conjured his own remembrances, he once said. Now SAM pays tribute to Wyeth, remembering this force in 20th-century art who died only a short time ago.

This small exhibition of some of his finest paintings commemorates the late artist’s extraordinary career. Seven great Wyeth paintings from private collections, otherwise never on public view, allow visitors to gain an appreciation for Wyeth’s choice of subjects and his brilliant manner of execution.

Wyeth worked during the same time period as the artists featured in the special exhibition Target Practice: Painting Under Attack 1949–78. Andrew Wyeth: Remembrance is a show that confirms that strong strains of realism have always run concurrently with abstraction in this country.

A New Dialogue Initiative Exhibit
ON DISPLAY through October 18, 2009
The Wing Luke Asian Museum

Sponsored by: 4Culture, Adobe, ArtsFund, City of Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, Little Family Foundation, Marguerite Casey Foundation, Washington State Arts Commission. Media sponsor: Comcast.

The recent deportations of Cambodian refugees are just one point in a long line of immigration policies that have shaped the lives of immigrants to the U.S. This poignant exhibit explores how immigration and refugee policies have formed communities by impacting where people live and work, causing long-lasting effects on families, and influencing sense of identity.

The New Dialogue Initiative is a multi-strategy program that address concerns and urgent needs about contemporary social issues and news events affecting the Asian Pacific American community.
