70 + HARVEY HEADS FOR HARVEY PEKAR'S 70th BIRTHDAY

Anyone who knows anything about underground comics, Crumb, or have seen the movie American Splendor knows the name Harvey Pekar. This week he turned 70, and as part of the Pekar Project they asked artists from all over the industry to draw a Harvey Head to give to him on his birthday. The object was to get 70 Harvey heads for his 70 years, and we ended up with 90+.

I felt honored to be asked as Harvey is an icon in underground comics. My dad Jorgy contributed a head as well. Below are close ups of our heads.

To see the full edition of heads visit THE PEKAR PROJECT. . . .

CHOKE BY CHUCK PALAHNIUK

I finally got a chance to see the screen adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's CHOKE the other night on DVD, and I can see why it didn't get the same Hollywood buzz Fight Club received. I love Chuck's work, and have read almost everything he's written, and as I've mentioned on my blog before (SEE- Art Sucks 5-13-05) one of my proudest moments as an artist was when Black Book Magazine stacked my contributor bio after Mr. Palahniuk's.

Before I talk about the movie, first I would like to get into the ascetics of the Silhouette Profile Portrait-poster design (see above left), which is a total aside from the book or movie. The poster is beautiful in it's simplicity, and any movie poster that uses illustration or painting in any form is alright by me.

Molly and I were debating what we thought the design was derivative of. . .continue reading after the jump

ORGANIZATION BEGINS

This is the first weekend I've had in the past three where I have time to do something other than sketch water. From everything I've learned about the business of art thus far, unless you are far enough along to have an office manager and research staff, there is a lot of business you have to handle and keep in order yourself. As a working artist, this means getting organized. I took a trip over to Staples and picked up a few more two inch D-Ring binders. I have quite the collection now, and when I added labels to them they really started to take shape. If I'm doing this I'm gonna do it right. Fifteen years of disorganization later and I am finally taking some advice from the village elders. . .continue reading after the jump. . .

Considering I've got a brother already living in Baltimore, a full tank of gas, and my girlfriend Molly along for the ride with an ipod full of a week's worth of Ron & Fez Audible Podcasts to get caught up on I decided it would be worth the drive down to check out ArtScape Baltimore . .artscape, artscape baltimore, art cars, art car parade, 2009, the metro gallery, robert matteson, robert mcclintock, phil kutno, art festival, free, cake, artsucks, art sucks, cojo art juggernaut, cojo, cojoart.com, artsucks.com

John McCrea and the rest of Cake jammed the main stage of ArtScape Baltimore 2009 getting an audience of thousands to chant Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell for about 5 minutes. . . literally. It was a great show even though I had to watch most of it through the butthole of this young hippy chick who decided to dance to every song, even the slow ones that are not meant to be danced to. . . artscape, artscape baltimore, john mccrea, 2009, cake, musicians, art festival, free, bad art, artsucks, art sucks, cojo art juggernaut, cojo, cojoart.com, artsucks.com

ARTSCAPE BALTIMORE MEETS ZATARAIN'S

At ArtScape Baltimore I took only a few photos as examples of what I now dub "Zatarain's Art", "The Zatarain's Style" or "The Zatarain's School." I didn't want to take too many because at this fair there was probably more of this type of art than any other. It's this faux New Orleans / Louisiana imagery of abstract musicians playing jazz with twisty keyboards and distorted saxophones. It really just annoys me at this point because it sucks so bad in a "soulless-pretending to have soul" kind of way. I like the color and use of line art in the one above, but it's the subject matter . . . artscape, artscape baltimore, zatarains, 2009, musicians, art festival, free, bad art, artsucks, art sucks, cojo art juggernaut, cojo, cojoart.com, artsucks.com

COJO AND THE ART SUCKS COMMUNITY FOR NEWBS

COJO AND THE ART SUCKS COMMUNITY FOR NEWBS

This blog is about me, and my life. If you don't already know me, I'm an artist. You might have seen my illustrations, cartoons, and writing in Maxim Magazine from 2002-2006 or in any number of hip hop or sports magazines from 1998 to present. Commercially I've worked freelance for print, broadcast, fashion, advertising, and for various fortune 500 companies and for the past few years aside from all my other projects have been a regular contributer to WWE Magazine and WWE Kids Magazine. . . .self promo, newbs, illustration, artsucks, art sucks, cojo art juggernaut, cojo, cojoart.com, artsucks.com
