Molten Chocolate Chip Cookies

For Mother's Day dinner, I was in charge of dessert. The best food assignment, in my opinion...

So I of course went to my dessert Pinterest board for inspiration to make something ahhhh-mazing.

I found a quick & easy AND drool-worthy dessert by Cookies and Cups and knew it would be perfect.

I immediately ran to the store and bought myself a whoopie pie pan - a muffin top pan will work great, too!

{Can't believe I waited this long to own one!}.

Because, really, the only thing better than a chocolate chip cookie

is a deep-dish chocolate-filled chocolate chip cookie! Am I right?!

Enough talking. Let's get to the good stuff!

Add a scoop of cookie dough to each cavity.

Press the dough down and add on two pieces of chocolate.

{You can use anything - Kisses, Dove chocolates, Hershey squares.... if it melts, it will work!}

Add another scoop of dough on top and cover the chocolate center!

I added a little too much dough, so they kind of exploded over the top.

They were still delicious though!!

Let the cookies cool completely before removing from the pan.

Then you can take them out, and then eat them ~~all before anyone notices~~!

Or....

Add some ice cream!!

Even better, add some hot fudge!

Recipe for Molten Chocolate Chip Cookies

from Cookies and Cups

1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
18-20 unwrapped milk chocolates, I used Hershey Kisses

Preheat oven to 350º
Spray your muffin top/whoopie pie pan* generously with cooking spray. Set aside.
In your stand mixer, cream together butter and both sugars until light and fluffy.
Add in your eggs, one at a time and vanilla. Mix on medium until combined.
Turn mixer to low and add baking soda, salt and flour.
Stir until just combined.
Stir in your chocolate chips and mix until incorporated.
Press 1/4 cup dough into each cavity in the pan.
Press 2 unwrapped chocolates in each cookie. Cover the chocolates completely with 1/8 cup more batter.
Bake approx 12 minutes until edges are golden.
Let cool in pan 11-13 minutes.
Gently loosen sides with knife and twist out, or flip pan over onto cooling rack to remove cookies.
Repeat with remaining dough.

Recipe makes between 9-12 deep-dish cookies. To reheat, place in microwave for 10-15 seconds.

*If you don't have a muffin top or whoopie pie pan - that's okay! Just roll dough around one of the chocolates and bake for 8-9 minutes.

Business Card Holder Tutorial & Giveaway

When I went to Breathing Space Blogger Retreat, I took along with me a bunch of business cards. I didn't want to just whip out a baggie or something to hand them out - I needed something a little more fun and useful! I found a great tutorial at The Crafty Cupboard and it was perfect for me! Even for a beginner sewer, this is a pretty fail-proof project.

What You'll Need:

2 Fabric Pieces cut to 5 1/2" x 4 1/2"

{One liner, one outside. You can use two different fabrics, but I just used the pink paisley for both.}

2 Fabric Pieces cut to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"

{Green damask pattern}

1 Piece Fusible Interfacing cut to 5 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Small Hair Elastic

Following the instructions on the packaging, iron on the piece of fusible interfacing onto the back side of one of the outside/lining pieces. Set aside.

Next, fold one of the long edges of the smaller pieces over about 1/8", then over again about 1/8" to create a double 1/4" hem. Sew along the bottom of the folded edge. Do this to both pieces.

This is how the front of the pieces should look.

Place the hemmed pieces on top of the lined piece, lining up the raw edges. Pin in place.

Place the other piece of fabric on top of the pinned lining piece, right sides together.

I put the elastic on top so you can see, but place the elastic in between the outer fabric and the lining. The amount of elastic you put between the layers will determine the size of the loop you'll have once you turn the holder. I put in about 1/4 of the elastic. Pin securely!

Sew around the entire holder using a 1/4" seam allowance.

Leave a space on one side {see the lines in the image above}, be sure to backstitch so it doesn't come undone. I also went over the elastic a few times to make sure it wasn't going to come out.

Clip each of the corners so you end up with clean points when you turn the holder.

Carefully turn the holder and use a dull pencil or tool to push out the corners. Lay flat and iron.

Fold the holder in half, pockets together. Run the iron over the holder to create a crease in the center of the holder.

Sew a line over the crease, then topstitch around the entire holder to finish.

To add a button: close the holder, and fold the elastic over. Mark the inside of the end of the elastic lightly with a pencil or a water-soluble marker. Carefully sew on your button, being careful not to sew the pocket closed!

Add in your business cards and show them off!!

Cabochon Jewelry Tutorial

Cabochons are everywhere right now. Blogs, Etsy shops, boutiques - you name it! I always wondered how they were made and it was hard for me to find a tutorial... so here you go! They are so simple to make, and really affordable. They make wonderful gifts, and selling them is a great way to make some extra money.

I made both earrings and necklace charms.

How to create clay cabochons:

Molds:

I used Mold Muse silicone molds. Highly recommend them! They are inexpensive, high quality, and they have a large selection of molds to choose from. In fact, I have a few more molds on my list that I want to buy!!

Clay or Resin:

{resin tutorial to come soon - today I am using clay}: I used both Sculpey clay and Pardo clay. I bought both at Hobby Lobby and wanted to see what the difference was, if any. Clay comes in lots of colors and brands.

Like most brands, I'm sure everyone's opinion is different. I noticed the Pardo clay I bought, while awesome in color, was really hard to use. It took over 30 minutes to get the clay warm enough and pliable enough to put into the mold. The purple was pretty much useless. I spent more than 45 minutes trying to get it to a useable consistency and it just crumbled. One thing that was good about the Pardo clay was that it was firm enough that I could pop it out of the mold without distorting the flower.

You can see in the image that the flower came out of the mold kind of cracked and wrinkled in areas.

Some flowers came out fine, others look like the one in the image.

The black and silver were the Sculpey clay. I really loved using this brand. It was soft right out of the package, and really simple to use. The only issue I had was that it was so soft that I had to leave the clay in the mold to bake it instead of popping it out. Not a problem though, just a little time consuming if you are wanting to make more than one at a time.

Close up of my flowers. The larger ones came out perfect, the smaller ones were harder to pop out and not mess up. If the designs are more intricate, I recommend just baking them in the mold.

Each brand of clay will have their own instructions for baking. For example, the Pardo clay bakes at a lower temperature than the Sculpey and for less time. So, read the instructions! Also remember that the molds cannot be baked higher that 395º, so check the clay packaging before purchasing.

Knead your clay until the clay is soft, and press firmly into the mold. Scrape extra off the top until the clay is level with the mold.
Place the molds and clay {if outside of mold} on a baking sheet {no oil or parchment paper needed}. Bake for instructed time and temperature. Use caution before handling since the silicone mold will be hot. Allow it to cool before demolding to prevent any part of your design from breaking or cracking.
Now you have cabochons!! You can do all kinds of things: use them on cards as embellishments, create jewelry, add to hair accessories, and so much more!! The possibilities are endless.

To create earrings & necklaces, you'll need:

Cabochons

E-6000 Glue

Flat Earring Posts with Clutches {I got a pack from Hobby Lobby with about 36 posts/clutches}

Necklace Bails {I got a pack from Hobby Lobby with 2 bails}

Add a small amount of E-6000 glue onto the flat part of the earring post. This is almost a little too much glue.

A little goes a long way. And yes, mama needs a manicure...

Place the earring post onto the back part of the cabochon. Try to get it as centered as possible.

Let set for a few hours to dry completely.

You can see the original on the bottom flower that the clay will look matte when finished. The clay I used had some sheen/glitter added to it, so it had a little bit of shine. As an experiment, I just painted a thin layer of polyurethane varnish to give the top flower some extra shine. I love how easy it was and the glossy look.

Now your earrings are finished!

For the necklace, I just glued a bail to the back of the flower. Let dry for a few hours and that's it!

I didn't add any varnish to this flower, and it still looks great!

When I went to Breathing Space, I put together these earring sets for my house/roommates. Super easy to put together. I designed the squares, cut them out, and then took a small needle and poked the holes where the earrings would go. Push the earrings through, add the backs and there you have a personalized gift!

Breathing Space Blogger Retreat!

This weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the Breathing Space Blogger Retreat held at Daybreak in South Jordan, Utah. This was my first ever blogging conference, and I was so excited to go. I'm a really shy & introverted person, so I was really nervous about mingling with the 75 bloggers in attendance. So glad I went, though! I learned a lot and met SO many great people I wouldn't have known otherwise. So, lesson learned. Always challenge yourself - you'll learn more than you think!

Easy Play MakeUp

Like I have mentioned before, we have a little makeup thief in our house...

Here is yet another solution to my growing problem:

Play Makeup!

No mess, and incredibly simple to do!

I started with an old compact that I rarely used and the powder was almost gone.

Chip out the powder, and give it a good wash with soap and water!

This should work for almost any makeup container. Hot water and soap should clean it right up. You can swab it with some alcohol afterward if you are concerned about germs. Make sure to dry the container well and give it a few hours to dry if it needs to.

Find some ~~ugly~~ nail polish that you have lying around, or go pick out some inexpensive colors from the store. I don't recommend spending too much though!! I got a little artistic with mine and poured the orange/peach/pinkish color in until the container was about half full. Then, I poured in some hot pink drops. Then get a toothpick and swirl it around!

Voilá! Marble-y goodness.

Put the compact/container somewhere where it's not going to be disturbed to dry. This took about 3 days or more to completely set since I filled it all the way up. Also note that the nail polish will settle more as it dries, so maybe layering would be a better option and make for a quicker dry time...

I also made up some eye shadows! The bottom section is just a purple nail polish. I filled the three glittery sections almost the same way as I did my Glitter Toes. Start by filling a layer of clear coat. Then, carefully pour in a layer of glitter, and then top with another layer of clear coat.

So fun and looks so cool!

I also turned an old eyeshadow container into a pretend lipstick/lipgloss container with some reds and pinks!

and that's it! So easy and fun for any little girl!!

Damask Ball Wreath

I designed it to go with my Monogrammed Canvas:

It was kind of more work than I had planned, but I love the final look!

Here's what I used to make my wreath:

12" Wreath Form

Scrap Ribbon

12 Large Styrofoam Balls

48 Small Styrofoam Balls

Damask Tissue Paper

Mod Podge

Hot Glue

First, I wrapped all the balls with strips of tissue paper and stuck on with Mod Podge.

{See my other damask ball/apothecary jar project here}

Paint the back side of the tissue paper strip with Mod Podge and wrap it around the ball.

If there are empty spots, you can add on smaller pieces. Let dry completely.

I had a vine wreath I found at the dollar store, but it's kind of hard to glue the balls onto the wreath sometimes.

So, I used some scraps of ribbon I had on hand and wrapped the wreath. I didn't want the pink ribbon to show through the wreath, so I took it out and gave it a coat of black spray paint {just to the one side}.

Next, I attached the balls to the wreath with hot glue.

DIY Twix Bars

These wannabe "Twix" bars are SO simple, and almost taste better than the real thing!! Not as much work as I thought, especially for someone who thinks even the thought of recipes like this are beyond overwhelming.

The idea came to me after Halloween, when our attempt at making caramel apples turned into yummy apples with a delicious dip!! We couldn't get the caramel to a high enough temperature, but it was the perfect temperature for a dip or a recipe like this. I also got an easy and delicious shortbread recipe from my amazing dessert-master of an aunt. Top the both with chocolate and voila! Perfect combination.

Twix Bars:

Prepare shortbread layer:

Recipe by Wendi Klein

1 cup powdered sugar

2 cups unsalted butter

4 cups flour

Pinch of salt

Pinch of baking powder

1/2-1 tsp vanilla

Press down into 13x9 pan to be about 1/8" thick.

Poke dough all over with a fork and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Let cool.

Prepare caramel layer:

Recipe by Brown Paper Packages

1/2 cup butter

1 cup light corn syrup

2 cups brown sugar

1 can sweetened condensed milk

1 tsp vanilla

Combine the first three ingredients in a large saucepan. When the butter is melted, add the condensed milk. Stirring constantly, cook to 230 degrees (soft ball stage). Take off heat, and stir in vanilla.

OR use a shortcut method:

Two 14 oz bags of caramels

2 Tbs + 2 tsp heavy cream

Unwrap caramels and place in a saucepan.

Turn to medium-low heat at stir until melted, and add in heavy cream. Do NOT overcook!

Pour hot caramel over the shortbread and spread evenly.

If it cools too fast, get fingers a little bit wet and you can easily move it around.

Let cool.

Prepare chocolate layer:

Melt 1 1/2 - 2 bags of chocolate chips

{I used milk chocolate, but you can use whatever you like}

Small amount of vegetable oil or shortening if chocolate is too thick to pour

Melt chocolate chips and oil/shortening in microwave or in a double boiler over low heat.

Pour over caramel and spread to edges.

Let cool.

Cut into squares {I also used cookie cutters for some fun shapes} and serve!

Store covered at room temperature or in the fridge {remove from fridge a little while before serving!}

Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll-Ups

Makeup Magnet Board

My daughter is getting into the stage of wanting to play with mommy's makeup. While I'm combing her hair, she's sitting on the counter and emptying my makeup bag and figuring out how to open everything and put it on like mommy does... sort of. So, I needed to stop the problem before it got too messy:

I found this sad, lonely, but perfectly sized magnet board at the thrift store for only $5!

The metal sheet was in great shape and the frame just needed a little sanding and a fresh coat of paint...

...and this ~~hideous~~ ribbon needed to be removed - ASAP!

{my apologies if you were the previous owner or if you really like this ribbon...}

First, I sanded the board down and gave it a couple of coats of white primer to get rid of the ugly rust color. The metal sheet was hot glued/super glued/who knows what else'd to the frame and wasn't coming off. So I taped all around the edge of the metal sheet before painting. Then, I painted about 3 coats of the turquoise/blue all around the frame and peeled off the tape.

There were 2 giant holes in the top where the ribbon used to be. Easy fix: I just put in two knobs I had purchased for a different project and they fit perfectly! Now I can hang up any jewelry, headbands, or anything that needs to be up & out of the way.

I also bought a package of super strong magnets with extra sticky adhesive on the back and placed them all over the back of my makeup. Some of the heavier items needed more than one magnet.

For things like brushes, sponges, mascara, etc items, I just used a kitchen drawer organizer and put a bunch of magnets on the back to hold everything.

Then just stick everything up on the board and enjoy your newly freed up counter space!!

Please don't judge my {lack of} makeup collection...

As with any makeover, I think it's fun to see the before/after!

Easter Necklaces

I know it's a little last-minute, but I finally got my Easter treats made up for my nieces and nephews!

What You'll Need:

Plastic Easter Eggs

Jelly Beans

Elastic Thread

{regular thread would work fine, too}

17-18" Ribbon

{I found a 6 pack of coordinating ribbon for $1 at Target}

1 Large Needle

*I would say that this could be a fun projects for kids, but the needles make this a little dangerous.

You could probably use the larger plastic needles to make this more kid-friendly.

Thread the needle and CAREFULLY poke it through the jelly bean. The coating will make it a little difficult, so be careful. It's also very sticky, so keep a wet cloth nearby to wipe your hands and clean off the needle. I put 5 jelly beans on each side with an empty egg in the center. Leave a few inches on each end of the jelly beans.

Tie the ends of the ribbon to each end of the elastic thread. Tie it tight so it won't come apart!

Fill the egg with a few surprises and that's it!

Spring Banner {Printable}

I've finally updated my Seasonal Canvas/Clothesline Art Canvas

{see here and here for past examples}

and put together a printable to share!

This time I turned my 11"x14" canvas sideways and wrapped the string around twice. Then, I cut out the small banner and clipped them on the string using mini clothespins. Voila! Easy and makes a super cute spring decoration!

If you don't have a canvas or don't want to use a canvas, I also made a larger banner {5x5" square letters} for you to print out instead! Just download the large banner.

Easter Egg Wreath

Hooray! Spring is finally here!

What better way to celebrate than to decorate the house with some bright spring colors?

I decided to start that adventure by making an easy, inexpensive Easter egg wreath.

I bought everything I needed at the dollar store, and spent a total of about $3 on this project. I must have been hiding under a rock or something because I had NO idea that the dollar store had wreath forms!! I have been overpaying for far too long...

Here's what I used to make the wreath:

Wreath form

Regular size Easter eggs {I used about 22}

Styrofoam glitter eggs {4 regular size}

These came pre-glittered and on picks. I bought one set of 5 regular size, and one set of 4 large eggs.

Hot glue

I didn't bother wrapping the wreath with ribbon or anything, but this might help if you have problems gluing the eggs onto the wreath. I needed to hold the egg in place for a minute or two until the glue cooled enough that the egg didn't shift. I started at the bottom and randomly added in the glitter eggs on.

Once the eggs were all on and the wreath was set, I added on some colored bows that came with the glitter eggs to add a little something extra. I ended up not having room on the wreath for the large eggs, so I just added them into my apothecary jars.

I love how colorful and EASY this wreath is!

One year ago TODAY I wrote my first post on Artsy-Fartsy Mama {I know what you're thinking: really, Lindsay?? Christmas stockings in March?! Oh well, you have to start somewhere!}. I can't believe it's already been a year. So much has happened here at Artsy-Fartsy Mama in that short time. I've gotten over a million {A MILION!! crazy...} page views, and have exceeded any expectations I had when I started blogging. Most of all, I've met so many fabulously talented bloggers and made so many new friends. Whether you're a new follower, or a newcomer, I am so glad you're here.

Thanks to a busy business, sickness, and vacations, I apologize for the posts being a little less than expected lately - but I promise there are more projects in the near future to be shared!

Craft Competition Announcement

Happy Monday, everyone!! I have some fantastic news to make your Monday even better: I'm going to be a guest judge for an awesome craft competition sponsored by Embracing Messy and Mindy Mae's Market! Here is Kelsey from Embracing Messy to tell you more about it:

Hi everyone! My name is Kelsey and I blog at Embracing Messy. I've been blogging for less than a year, so I'm still learning as I go but loving every minute of it! I get so excited when I can share a craft tutorial with my readers and connect with other crafty people.

A little over a week ago, I contacted Lindsay to ask if she'd be willing to guest judge in my crafting competition that I'm hosting and I was thrilled when she agreed. Well, today I'm here to tell you all about it! I am hosting my first ever craft competition with Mindy Mae's Market and special guest judges Adrianne from Happy Hour Projects and your very own Lindsay! I'm so excited to be teaming up with all of these wonderful ladies.

St Patrick's Day Clothesline Art

Remember when I said that my Valentine's Clothesline Art could be used for every holiday?

Well, here you go:

Green hearts with GOLD glitter for a fun St. Patrick's Day Clothesline!

Easy peasy.

All you need for this project is:

11"x14" canvas

1.5" heart {or any other}-shaped punch

Paint chips

Mini clothespins

String/twine/etc {I used black embroidery thread}

Gold glitter paint or Mod Podge & Gold glitter

Head to any paint-selling store {I chose WalMart this time} and pick out a bunch of paint chips

{you'll really only use about 3}. The color I chose was Lucky Shamrock by Glidden.

Punch or cut out 16 hearts {or more, if that's how you roll}.

Carefully paint a layer or two of the gold glitter paint on each heart. Don't have gold glitter paint?

You can also paint on some Mod Podge and sprinkle some gold glitter on top! Either way looks great.

While they're drying, tape or glue one end of the string onto the back of the canvas and wrap the thread/string/twine/etc around the canvas until you have four lines across the front and tape or glue the other end of the string on the back.

Now it's time to attach the hearts! Carefully clip the hearts onto the string with the mini clothespins and arrange however you want - crooked or perfect, it's all up to you!
