The Sandwich Witch

My daughter loves having books read to her and is now learning to read. She loves going to the library and choosing new books to read, and it has been fun watching her want to learn to do it herself. I am planning on homeschooling with her, and am so grateful to find books that combine both a fun story and a way to learn something new.

Recently, I was introduced to a new book called "The Sandwich Witch". It's a children's book (recommended for ages 4-8, but I think any kids would enjoy it), written in a fun way to help teach children the importance of a eating a well-balanced diet so they can be healthy and strong. A few of my talented designer friends from my pre-working days illustrated the book, so I knew I had to have it for myself. The author, Lee McNeil, signed a copy just for Zoey. She was so excited to get "happy mail" just for herself and thought it was so cool to have her name written inside the cover!

She immediately sat on the couch with the book and flipped through the pages. I read it through to her once, then we talked about the importance of eating healthy and making good choices when it comes to snacks and treats. I catch her reading the book (in her own words) to herself all the time, and she knows what's happening in the story because of the thought-out illustrations.

To help her learn a little more about healthy eating, I decided I would let her help make lunch. Of course, the Sandwich Witch came up in conversation, so we made a turkey and cheese sandwich and cut it out with a witch shaped cookie cutter. Zoey was a little worried that the Sandwich Witch was going to steal it. We talked about what kind of healthy snacks could go with the sandwich, and she picked strawberries. It's so fun to see how much she has learned, and hopefully I can continue to teach her to make healthy habits as she grows.

Allergy Night with University of Utah Health Care

My husband is allergic to almost everything that grows. He has a good attitude about it, but it's hard for me to watch (especially when spring and summer start) the things in the air making him feel awful. We are always stocked up with different allergy medications and emergency items, and have visited doctors trying to find a way to help him with minimal success because his allergies are so bad.

On May 28th, the University of Utah Health Care is having an Allergy Night. If you are in the area, and you or your children (ages 5 & up) suffer from allergies, you should plan on being there. Dr. Kevin Wilson, an allergy specialist, will teach how to get relief, share the latest treatment options, and ways to treat your allergies at home. This also includes a FREE allergy test (skin prick) for 14 antigens.

Hello Sunshine

After a few freak snowstorms, I'm so happy that this beautiful spring/summer weather is here to stay! There's nothing quite like feeling the warm sunshine on your face and the way a beautiful spring day can lighten your mood. It has been wonderful to play outside, and do a small amount of gardening (I'm not that great at it yet, but I'm going to try!).

I designed a printable to bring a bit of that sunshine into my home. I love the bright colors and the cheerfulness it brings into the room, and I wanted to share it with all of you!

DIY Peacock Earrings

I love creating my own jewelry. It's so fun, and I love being able to create something unique for myself. I received a package of fun jewelry findings from WholePort, and I'm so excited to share more jewelry that I've created.

These bronze findings are so pretty, but I wasn't really sure what to do with them at first. The more I looked at them, the more they looked like peacock feathers. So, I looked through my collection of beads and found some that looked a little like the colors and shimmer of peacock feathers. It was meant to be! After a little bit of experimenting with jump rings and beads, I created some beautiful earrings that I have gotten many compliments on. A few people were surprised that I had made them myself.

Supplies:
2 Antique Bronze Jewelry Findings (found at WholePort)
2 Fishhook Earring Wires (bronze if you can find them, but I used Sterling Silver)
20 Jump Rings
20 Black Rainbow Seed Beads
Jewelry Needle Nose Pliers

Step 1: Open the bottom loop of the fishhook earring wires with the needle nose pliers. Hook the top of the bronze finding through the loop and use the pliers to close it back up.

*The best way to open earring wires and jump rings is to twist it until you have a space big enough to fit a bead or finding by using your fingers on one side, and the pliers on the other (or two sets of pliers). This will also help the rings keep their circle shape. Do not just pull the jump ring open. Pulling the rings open will distort the circle and make the rings more likely to break.

Step 2: Open one jump ring, and slide a bead onto it. Slide one end of the jump ring through one of the loops at the bottom of the finding. Close the jump ring. Repeat for the remaining four loops with different color beads.

Step 3: You can leave the earring as-is, or I added a second jump ring & bead to each loop. Repeat step 2 with the jump rings and beads, but attach them to the rings already on the earring instead of the finding loops.

Repeat steps 1-3 for the other earring, and you're done! These earrings are easy and inexpensive to make for yourself, or they would make a perfect Mother's Day, birthday, or even a bridal shower gift! My mom has already asked for a pair of her own.

Chocolate Cheesecake

Cheesecake is delicious, but it has a reputation of being really finicky and difficult to make for someone (like me) who is a beginner in the kitchen. We were having a family party where we were all to bring a part of the meal, but it had to be made from a recipe we've never tried before. I was given the dessert, and figured my family would be the perfect guinea pigs to try a cheesecake recipe on.

Surprisingly, it didn't turn out to be as scary or difficult as I thought it would be! I found the recipe from Hershey's, so even if it looked horrific by the time I was done, it shouldn't taste too bad, right? The only problem I had with this cheesecake was that the top of the cheesecake cracked. After doing a little research, I found out that that is a common problem, so now I just need to practice! The cheesecake was a big hit, and I highly recommend trying it (at least once)!

Ingredients:
1 cup Oreo crumbs (about 14 cookies)
1/4 cup butter
3 packages cream cheese, softened
1 1/4 cup sugar
1 container (8 oz) sour cream
1/2 cup cocoa
2 Tablespoons flour
3 eggs
1/2 cup chocolate chips
2 teaspoons shortening

Directions

Prepare chocolate crumb crust:
Combine 1 cup Oreo crumbs and 1/4 cup melted butter (or margarine). Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan.
Beat cream cheese and sugar until blended. Add sour cream and vanilla, beat until blended. Beat in cocoa and flour. Add eggs, one at a time and beat just until blended. Pour onto crust.
Bake at 450º for 10 minutes.
Reduce oven temperature to 250º, and continue baking for 40 minutes. Check to see if it's done by gently shaking the pan. If it's set, but the center still jiggles, it's done.
Remove from oven to a wire rack. With a knife, loosen cheesecake from the side of the pan. Let cool completely.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening in a small, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds and stir to make sure chips are melted. If necessary, cook an additional 15 seconds. Drizzle chocolate over cheesecake.
Refrigerate 4 to 6 hours (or overnight). Store covered in refrigerator.

You Are Loved Blocks

I love creating projects out of wood. These blocks are such a quick and simple craft that anyone can do - even the kids can help! The vinyl might be a little tricky for the smaller kids, but with a little help, it is certainly doable. I already had all the supplies, so this project literally cost me nothing. If you were to buy everything, I would think you'd spend less than $10.

I especially love the message on these blocks. It would be perfect mom or grandma for Mother's Day, or give them as a Teacher Appreciation gift to tell that inspiring teacher that their hard work doesn't go unnoticed. Or make one for yourself. We could all use a reminder that we are loved!!

Supplies
2x4 block(s), cut 6"
Sandpaper
Paint - I used Delta Ceramcoat in White and Tahiti Blue
Vinyl - I used pink and grey
Vinyl cutter or Xacto knife

Prep: Cut and sand the blocks. Make all sides and edges as smooth as possible. Find a quote, saying or image that you want to use with the vinyl.

Step 1: Paint the block(s). I used two coats of the blue, and three of the white. Let each coat dry completely before adding the next coat.

Step 2: When the paint is dry, use sandpaper to distress the edges. This isn't required, but I love the way it looks.

Step 3: While the paint is drying, cut the vinyl. I used Cricut Craft Room to put this saying together. If you don't have a vinyl cutter, you could also use an Xacto knife and a printout of your saying or quote. Wipe off the block (to remove any sawdust) and apply the vinyl.

Here's how to apply the vinyl if you've never worked with it before:

After you "weed" out the vinyl, lay transfer tape over the top. Use a credit card or scraper to press the transfer tape over the vinyl. You are wanting the vinyl to stick to the transfer tape, so use a lot of pressure.
Carefully and slowly pull the corner of the transfer tape. The vinyl should be stuck to the transfer tape. If not, lay the transfer tape back down and scrape the area again until it sticks.
Line up your vinyl over the block (don't press it down just yet). The transfer tape is a bit transparent (see image above). Once it's in the place you want it, lay it down on the block, starting at the bottom. If you lay the whole thing down at once, you'll end up with a lot of air bubbles.
Using a credit card or scraper, go over the transfer tape/vinyl (using a lot of pressure like before). Slowly peel up the transfer tape, starting at the corner. If the vinyl isn't sticking to the block, lay the transfer tape back down and scrape it again.
Once the transfer tape is off, you're done. For a visual, see this quick video of the process from Cricut.

That's it! Now your blocks are done. Ready add to your decor as-is, or wrap with candy and a card for the perfect gift for moms, grandmas, friends, or teachers.

Teacher Appreciation Poster

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week this next week, I just wanted to share a poster I designed two years ago for a local teacher's door. They wanted a jungle theme, so the phrase "We are WILD about you Mrs. Teacher!" worked perfectly. I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!

Since this poster doesn't take up the entire door, I also designed some paw prints so that the kids in the class could write their name and/or a note to the teacher. This looks so great when it is put together!

I love photography. I'm not the best at it, but it's on my list of things I need to practice and improve. I only recently bought myself a DSLR camera and I'm loving it - but was a bit overwhelmed at how to get my images to look the way I wanted them to. Now I'm ready to learn all I can about my camera and to create better quality photos of both my family and craft projects.

At both Build Your Blog Conference, and Snap! Conference, I was introduced to Emilie from Photo by Emilie. Emilie Decker is an amazing, self-taught photographer with a talent for capturing gorgeous photos. She specializes in children & family portraiture, event, and wedding photography. Take a look at just a few of her beautiful photos:

I took Emilie's photography classes at both conferences. She is an amazing teacher, and teaches in a way that makes you feel like you can be a great photographer, too! She is so knowledgeable about photography and is so patient with those of us who have no idea what we're doing. I went home from both classes with multiple pages of notes. I've already noticed a significant difference in my photos, and I can't wait to learn more!

*Basics of Manual Mode

“For user of any version of Photoshop Elements or CS. I’ll give you an overview and compressive tour of Photoshop and how I like to set up my buttons and preferences. This will be great if you’re brand new to PS. This tour will also be great if you’re veteran. I promise you’ll learn about buttons and setting you never knew about. It’s common knowledge that there’s 10 ways to do the same thing in PS. I’ll show you my favorite ways and tell you why they are my favorite. I’ll teach what I believe is my most valuable editing skill, the steps I use to evaluate what an images needs. Anyone can teach you how to push buttons on Photoshop. I want to teach you why you push those buttons. After you’ve learned to evaluate your image I’ll teach you the process I use to edit all my images. This section will include how to run actions, layers, masks, brushes, levels and many many more useful editing tools. This is an action packed class!!”

Cricut Fashion Show: Refashioned T-Shirt Dress

Cricut came up with an ingenius idea: to put on a fashion show with bloggers using a simple white t-shirt and a bit of Cricut Iron-On! I couldn't resist being a part of it. I love to refashion t-shirts into something amazing (like my Refashioned Ruffle Skirt)! It's also a lot of fun to see what other bloggers come up with.

So, with white t-shirt and Cricut Iron-On, I made an adorable sleeveless dress that will be perfect for summer!

Supplies:

White X-Large t-shirt

Cricut Iron-On (pink, yellow, silver, and gold)

Pattern and tutorial from {LBG Studio}

2 buttons

Sewing supplies/sewing machine

The dress tutorial was easy to follow, and I will be making more of these dresses in the future! Instead of adding buttonholes in the top section, I just sewed it closed and added the pink buttons (that were a perfect match to the pink iron-on).

After the dress was done, I used the cut-off sleeves to make two pockets on the dress. All I did was cut a 4-5 inch square, lining up the hemmed edge of the sleeve as one side of the square. I cut through both layers so I had 4 squares for two pockets.

With the right sides together, I sewed the squares leaving an inch or two gap to flip (I would recommend this being on the bottom). Make sure to clip the corners to get them nice and pointed! Fold in the gapped section and iron the pocket. Repeat for the second pocket.

Arrange the pockets on the dress and pin in place. The hemmed part from the shirt sleeve looks best at the top (as seen in the image above) to give it a finished look. Sew around the sides and bottom of each pocket, making sure to close up the gapped section. Once they are sewn on, the sewing part of your dress is done!

The iron-on sheets are made up of two parts: the iron-on film, which will be ironed on to your project, and the liner. The liner is a carrier sheet (think transfer paper) that holds the design in place and protects your iron during application. Like any iron-on product, make sure you mirror your image, otherwise it will be backwards when you iron it on! The design I used is the same either way, so I didn't worry about mirroring.

To cut the iron-on, place the sheet liner side down on the cutting mat. Cut the sheet with a kiss cut (where you only cut through the iron-on, but leaves the liner intact). Every Cricut machine has a different setting, so make sure to check your cut guide. I cut at 3 blade depth, 2 pressure at medium speed. The design cut beautifully.

I used the cupcake design from the Sweet Treats Cartridge. After measuring the pockets, I sized the cupcake pieces in the Cricut Craft Room, and cut the pieces out of the different colors of iron-on. Keep in mind that you can't layer on top of the glitter iron-on.

I ironed on the middle cupcake piece first (yellow & pink), then removed the liner. Then, I arranged the cupcake wrappers and hearts and ironed them on. You can kind of see the pink showing through the silver glitter wrapper, but it's not too bad.

If you've never worked with Cricut Iron-On, here are some basic instructions:

Set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting with the steam OFF.
Lightly preheat the area with the iron for 10-15 seconds. This really does help!
Place your image, liner side UP onto the area. If you don't place the liner side up, it will stick to your press cloth.
Carefully lay a press cloth or dishtowel over the design. You don't want any of the pieces to shift!
Apply medium pressure with the iron for 25-30 seconds.
Flip the material over and apply medium pressure with the iron to the back for an additional 25-30 seconds.
*If you have any parts that didn't stick for some reason or if edges are flipping up, re-iron the pieces or loose edges for 10 seconds.
Let cool and remove liner. If you try to remove the liner before it cools, you risk burning your fingers or peeling the iron-on up.

I am so happy with how the dress turned out, and what the Cricut Iron-On adds to it!! My daughter loves the dress and I'm hoping it warms up soon so she can wear it more often.

Bling Frame Makeover

Sometimes all a frame needs is a little bling to take it from "meh" to marvelous! Working with Darice's Bling on a Roll couldn't be easier. With a sparkle-obsessed mama and a girly-girl daughter, I see a whole lot of sparkly "makeovers" in our future!!

Bling on a Roll is a mesh ribbon with multi-faceted metallic gems that sparkle like rhinestones. All you need to do is cut the flexible roll of "diamonds" to size and adhere to bling-up any craft or decor project! Darice also offers adhesive backed Gemz in a variety of colors. Cut into any shape to make customization a snap!

Supplies:

5x7 Frame

Bling on a Roll

E6000 Glue

Step 1: Cut 4 pieces of Bling on a Roll about 7 inches long. Since all frames are a bit different, measure your frame or line up the Bling on a Roll to check the length.

Step 2: The bling was a little too wide for the frame, so I trimmed off one line of Bling on each strip.

Step 3: Add a line of E6000 glue to the back every few rows of Bling. The Bling on a Roll is light, so it doesn't need much glue to hold. I added glue to each end, then every few rows in between (see image above).

Step 4: Center the Bling strip and lightly press it to the frame. It shouldn't pop up, but if it does, just hold for a minute or two until it sticks. I recommend adding the top strip first, then work your way around the frame and align the gems as best you can.

Step 5: Let dry for an hour or two, then add a photo or printable! (Image in frame from Kensie Kate)

Easy Kids Craft: Stenciled Name Blocks

I think it's so great that my daughter loves creating as much as I do! We're always crafting together, and she wants to make her own version of whatever I'm doing. Plaid Crafts sent some new Mod Podge Washout and Apple Barrel paint to create with, which are perfect for kids crafts since they are both washable.

Speaking of washable - the Mod Podge Washout for Kids is quite similar to regular Mod Podge, except for the fact that it is washable - even when dry. That includes being machine washable with no pre-soak time. That's a win for a mom like me who has a creative toddler, and is afraid of what kind of mess I'll have to clean up when we're done.

Supplies:

Mod Podge Washout

Apple Barrel paint in Candy Pink, Banana, Petunia Purple, and Pool Blue

Foam Spouncers

2 inch Letter Stencils

Four 2x4 blocks, cut 4 inches tall and sanded

Step 1: I lined the table with butcher paper and got out a bunch of sponge brushes. This was her project, so I left it up to her decide which colors to paint. She painted everything except the bottom of the block (easier to let stand and dry), then moved on to the next one with a new brush. Once all the blocks had their first coat, we went back to the block she started with and gave them all a second coat. The pink and the yellow could have used a third, but they still looked great.

I love the colors of these Apple Barrel paints. They are so bright and fun! Luckily, we didn't have too many paint accidents. She got some on her hands and a drop on her shirt, but the Apple Barrel paints are washable while they're still wet. We also kept some baby wipes on hand which took the paint right off anything that was spilled on.

Step 2: Once the blocks were dry (which didn't take long at all), I punched out the stencils (you can see that the "N" is still intact) to spell her name. I tried to center the stencil on the block and taped it in place. I showed Zoey how to use the spouncer and practiced on our paint tray before painting on the block. She wasn't feeling very confident about it, so I held her hand and helped her paint over the stencils. Needless to say, she was quite impressed when we were done.

Step 3: I was just going to have her seal the blocks with the Mod Podge when she asked, "Mom, aren't we going to sparkle them?" I wasn't planning on it, but apparently she has noticed my infatuation with glittering a lot of my projects... So, of course, I obliged.

I poured a small amount of the Mod Podge Washout into a container and added a bunch of iridescent glitter. Then, I stirred it with a craft stick and that's it! Glittery, washable Mod Podge in no time!

Step 4: Using a sponge brush, Zoey painted the front, sides, and top of each block with the Mod Podge. This Mod Podge seemed to be a little thicker than regular Mod Podge, but I think that helps when it comes to kids crafting on their own. She painted a pretty thick layer, but it dries clear.

Step 5: Let the blocks dry, and you now have sparkly, stenciled name blocks!

She loves seeing her name up on the shelf and is so proud of herself for making them all on her own. Any time we have company, she likes to show them off. I'm pretty impressed with how well they turned out, and we can't wait to create more projects in the future with our Plaid products!

Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival

It's springtime here in Utah, and that means it's that time again for the Thanksgiving Point Tulip Festival!! I've never been, but I am excited to go with my family this year. I'm hoping to sneak a peek while I'm at Snap! Conference next week, too!

The Tulip Festival officially opens today and runs through April 27th, 10 am to 8 pm daily, closed Sundays. The 55-acre Thanksgiving Point Gardens displays 250,000 tulips, with nearly 100 different varieties in a rainbow of colors. The display is redesigned every year, so the experience is different every spring!

Not only can you view the gorgeous exhibit, but there are also garden tours and demonstrations every day. On the weekends, the Tulip Festival includes music, vendors, and food for more family fun! If you love photographing the flowers, enter the Tulip Festival photography contest! There are three age categories so anyone in the family can enter, and a grand prize for the winner!

Lampshade Makeover with Cricut Iron-On

This lamp makeover is probably the easiest one I have ever done, all thanks to Cricut! I have had this lamp sitting in my "not sure what to do with this, but don't want to get rid of it" pile for months, and when I received some iron-on vinyl from Cricut, I knew it was meant to be.

Cricut Iron-On is a heat transfer film that allows you to make accessories and clothing all your own. You can personalize all kinds of home decor, pillows, blankets, wall hangings, and more. You can see what other bloggers are making in the Free Throw Iron-On Showcase.

I bought this lamp for $5 at a yard sale. I liked the different look it had to it, and it is in really good shape. It needed a little tweaking in the hardware, but nothing too drastic. Mostly it was just covered in dust and needed a little extra something. So, there it sat, waiting to be beautified.

I haven't really worked with iron-on products very much, and I was so relieved that the iron-on vinyl is easy to work with. After spending too much time in the Cricut Craft Room, I finally decided on a damask shape from the Damask Décor Cartridge. I measured the lampshade, then arranged four of the damask shape in Craft Room to go on each side of the lamp.

*Like any iron-on product, make sure you mirror your image! Otherwise it will be backwards when you iron it on! The design I used is the same either way, so I didn't worry about mirroring.

I had instructions to cut at 3 blade depth, 2 pressure at medium speed. The design cut beautifully, but it also cut through the liner sheet. Boo. I could still use the iron-on, but I had to arrange the design by hand instead of just laying the liner over the lampshade. So, I would recommend testing a small piece before cutting your designs to make sure your settings are right.

Laying the pieces by hand isn't impossible, it just makes the process take a little longer. Since the design was a bit intricate. I marked the centers of the lampshade, then traced parts the negative portion to mark where the damask shape needed to fit with a water-soluble marker.

It took less than an hour for me to do this entire project, including the cutting, and tracing, and ironing. I love how it turned out and can't wait to make more projects with this iron-on vinyl!!
