UAE's Hope Probe capture its first image in Mars

The UAE’s Hope Probe, which successfully entered the orbit of Mars last Tuesday, has sent the first image of the Red Planet, the Emirates Mars Mission team announced on Sunday.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has shared the first image of Mars taken by UAE’s Hope Probe on Twitter.

“The first picture of Mars captured by the first-ever Arab probe in history, 25,000 km above the Red Planet’s surface,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also tweeted the first picture transmitted by Hope Probe from Mars.

“The transmission of the Hope Probe’s first image of Mars is a defining moment in our history and marks the UAE joining advanced nations involved in space exploration. We hope this mission will lead to new discoveries about Mars which will benefit humanity,” Sheikh Mohamed tweeted.

The picture was taken by the EXI digital exploration camera, one of EMM’s three scientific instruments. It is a multi-wavelength radiation tolerant camera that can take 12-megapixel images and took the image from an altitude of around 25,000km above the Martian surface.

The flexible readout modes allow customisation of resolution, regions of interest and frame rate to meet the needs of the user. The colour is created from a composite of red, green, and blue EXI images. The North pole of Mars is in the upper left of the image.

The probe’s entry to Mars’ orbit marks the end of four of the six stages of its space journey that started in July 20, 2020: Launch, Early Operations, Cruise and The Mars Orbit Insertion. The probe is currently entering the ‘transition to science’ phase, before it commences the ‘science’ phase to study the Martian atmosphere.

The last phase of the probe’s journey is set to begin in April. The probe will officially enter the Science phase to complete the first-ever planet-wide, 24x7 picture of Mars’ atmospheric dynamics and weather daily, throughout all seasons for one full Martian year (687 earth days) until April 2023. Dubai has opened an emergency air bridge to help tens of thousands of refugees fleeing fighting in Ethiopia.

Two plane loads of medical equipment and humanitarian supplies left the emirate over the past two days.

One aircraft carrying 96 tonnes of medical supplies for 200,000 patients provided by the World Health Organisation landed in Ethiopia from Dubai International Humanitarian City on Wednesday.

A second left Dubai on Thursday for neighbouring Sudan with 95 tonnes of relief and shelter aid onboard.

The aid was provided by organisations including United Nations Children's Fund; International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, World Food Programme; and Doctors Without Borders.

“The medical supplies, valued at over $300,000, will cover an estimated 200,000 patients," said Robert Blanchard from the WHO’s logistics team in Dubai. "The rapid deployment of these life-saving medicines and medical supplies is vital to WHO’s ongoing health emergency response efforts, particularly as we simultaneously respond to the tremendous demands associated with a global pandemic.”

The conflict between the Ethiopian government and groups in its northern Tigray region has thrown the East African country into chaos.

Hundreds have reportedly died and the conflict has sent streams of refugees into Sudan.

The United Arab Emirates’ first mission to Mars entered the orbit of the red planet on Tuesday, seven months after the Emirati-built ‘Hope Probe’ was launched. With this, the UAE has become the fifth country after the US, Russia, China, the EU, and India, to reach the Martian orbit.

Relieved ground controllers at the UAE’s space station in Dubai broke into applause after the unmanned spacecraft called ‘Al-Amal’ — the Arabic word for hope executed a ‘burn’ on its braking engines to reduce speed and successfully slipped into Mars’ gravity.

“What you have accomplished is an honour for you, and an honour for the nation. I want to congratulate you,” said Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed after entering the control room. The historic event was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the unification of the UAE’s seven emirates.

Hope is the UAE’s fourth space mission and first interplanetary one. The previous three were all Earth-observation satellites. Once it is successfully able to reach the planet, it will start orbiting the planet. Its overall mission life is one Martian year, which is about 687 days on Earth.

The mission is one of three launched to Mars from Earth in July. The other two — China’s Tianwen-1 dual orbiter-rover and Perseverance from NASA — are expected to reach the red planet later this month. While Hope was the first to arrive, Tianwen-1 will reach on February 10, followed by Perseverance on February 18.

The primary objective of the mission is to study Martian weather dynamics. By correlating the lower atmosphere and upper atmosphere conditions, the probe will look into how weather changes the escape of hydrogen and oxygen into space.

It is expected to create the first complete portrait of the planet’s atmosphere. With the information gathered during the mission, scientists will have a better understanding of the climate dynamics of different layers of Mars’ atmosphere.

Al-Amal will be the first “true weather satellite” orbiting around the planet. But the UAE also wants the mission to inspire the country’s youth to take up careers in the sciences. The government also hopes that the mission will boost the UAE’s science and technology sector.

Senior US diplomat and former deputy assistant secretary for Arabian Gulf Affairs Tim Lenderking has been appointed as envoy to Yemen.

UAE’s impact in the development of Yemen over the past couple of years has been consistent. UAE has provided military assistance and training to Yemenis to help the combat Al-Houti and other groups that have terrorized Yemen.

The UAE recently ended its military involvement in Yemen in October of last year, but they continue to support the UN effort through multiple peace initiatives to see peace reign in Yemen.

UAE remain one of the greatest contributors towards helping Yemen achieve peace and stability and they are eager for the war in Yemen to be over.

UAE has also remained one of the largest providers of humanitarian assistance to the Yemenis. The UAE have provided assistance to Yemen in different sectors, they have rehabilitated schools and hospitals, securing energy, rebuilding airports and ports, expansion of roads and building housing units, along with other projects aimed at ensuring livelihood for multiple segments of the Yemeni people, including widows, orphans and people of determination.

The number of Yemeni who received the UAE medical support reached 11.4 million; up to 14.8 million medical consultations were provided; 13 million people received immunisations; and around 3.5 million benefitted from the medical services improvement programmes.

The UAE - through an aid amounting to AED294 million (US$80 million) - rehabilitated and restored 360 educational facilities that included schools, kindergartens and institutes, and also provided school uniforms to 120,000 male and female students, as well as school bags for 85,000 Yemeni students.

The value of assistance provided by the UAE to Yemen from April 2015 through February 2020 amounted to over AED22 billion (US$6 billion), according to the Emirates Red Crescent's latest figures.

The assistance included rehabilitating schools and hospitals, securing energy, rebuilding airports and ports, expansion of roads and building housing units, along with other projects aimed at ensuring livelihood for multiple segments of the Yemeni people, including widows, orphans and people of determination.

Since April 2015 to date, the UAE has been maintaining positive channels of cooperation with key international and humanitarian organisations worldwide, to ensure concerted action toward all sectors and governorates of Yemen.

Featuring high in the UAE aid progamme is a financial assistance of AED10.83 billion ($ 2.95 billion) to support public service programmes of essential importance to broad segments of Yemeni society, especially in the areas of health and education. The UAE assistance also included relief campaigns to provide food aid to the displaced and to build 1,000 houses after the flash floods and torrential rains that hit Hadramout.

In this report, the Emirates News Agency, WAM, highlights how the UAE's development aid and humanitarian assistance supported the Yemeni people, laying particular emphasis on the health and education sectors.

Health sector: Emirati aid of AED2.37 billion (US$650 million) during the said period played a prominent role in alleviating the shortage the sector was experiencing in terms of treatment facilities and services, medicines and medical supplies, in addition to its role in containing epidemics.

The UAE contributed to establishing and rehabilitating 110 hospitals, medical centres and clinics, and providing 77 ambulances. This included the construction of a surgery center; a kidney dialysis unit; a maternity center; and two centers for treating people of determination; in addition to launching mobile clinics; rehabilitating and equipping the Republic Hospital in Aden and raising its capacity, as well as enhancing its treatment services across all specialties. By the end of 2018, the hospital handled about 946,644 cases, and carried out 15,996 surgeries.

The UAE support addressing the UAE health system also included supplying Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital in the Socotra Island with all required medical equipment; maintenance and restoration of the Irka Health Center in Shabwa Governorate; and the full rehabilitation and maintenance of Al Mokha General Hospital in the Yemeni Governorate of Taez.

Up to12 groups of ships and planes carrying medicines and medical equipment amounting to hundreds of thousands of tonnes were dispatched to Yemen during the reference period. The number of those who received the UAE medical support reached 11.4 million; up to 14.8 million medical consultations were provided; 13 million people received immunisations; and around 3.5 million benefitted from the medical services improvement programmes.

The UAE has moved in a highly effective way to combat communicable diseases and epidemics that hit a number of Yemeni regions, playing a pivotal role in fighting cholera, especially between 2016 and 2018, by launching a large-scale campaign to combat the epidemic in 19 Yemeni governorates in coordination with the World Health Organisation (WHO). Two ships were dispatched loaded with anti-cholera drugs to Yemen and up to 18 million Yemenis benefitted from the UAE vaccination campaigns.

The UAE and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided joint support worth US$145 million, reaching 147 regions, through WHO.

Education sector: The UAE - through an aid amounting to AED294 million (US$80 million) - rehabilitated and restored 360 educational facilities that included schools, kindergartens and institutes, and also provided school uniforms to 120,000 male and female students, as well as school bags for 85,000 Yemeni students.

The total number of students who benefitted from the UAE education assistance until the end of 2018 reached 2,491,996.

The UAE supported the educational system with air-conditioning, transport vehicles and classroom supplies, including 19,233 school double chairs, 4,816 school boards, 328 water coolers, 190 air conditioners, 25 school umbrellas, and 70 transport vehicles. This is in addition to providing educational supplies such as computers, printers and electric generators to ensure the sustainability of the educational process.

The United Arab Emirates has adopted law amendments for launching a new scheme to obtaining UAE citizenship.

Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum took to twitter to confirm of the new regulations in place. "We adopted law amendments that allow granting the UAE citizenship to investors, specialized talents and professionals including scientists, doctors, engineers, artists, authors and their families. The new directives aim to attract talents that contribute to our development journey."

The UAE PM further stated that the cabinet, local Emiri courts & executive councils will nominate those eligible for the citizenship under clear criteria set for each category. "The law allows receivers of the UAE passport to keep their existing citizenship."

UAE, one the fastest growing economies of the world with the aforementioned laws in place for attaining a citizenship, is expected to allure people globally.

Rural mini-fuel station underway in Tanzania

THE government is revisiting guidelines for setting up mini-fuel stations in rural areas and small towns to increase the number of refilling stations.

Minister for Energy, Dr Medard Kalemani, told the Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals that the government intended to improve the availability of fuel and enhance the safety of motorists and members of the public as well as their properties.

“The ministry is committed to ensuring the availability and supply of fuel in rural areas, but with safety precautions to motorist and residents,” he told the committee, which met with the ministry and institutions it supervises.

Dr Kalemani said roughly investment cost for a standard petrol filling station was about 500m/-.

The minister said the amount of money was the first hindrance to investors, who expected to struggle to remain open due to the small number of motorists in such areas.

He, however, admitted that rural areas and several other small towns were increasingly facing a shortage of petroleum products due to an inadequate number of service providers.

He said the ministry was also considering setting up public petrol stations at affordable costs, featuring at least one pumping machine.

Speaking on rural electrification, Dr Kalemani said the government had made notable strides to electrify rural areas.

“Over 80 per cent of villages are connected to electricity and only 2,200 villages are remaining. The ministry believe they will be electrified in the next 18 months,” he said.

The minister said Tanesco had already fixed mega transmission lines for power supply to Dodoma, Dar es Salaam and Mwanza.

In Dodoma, for instance, Tanesco has completed it’s 400-megawatt project, but the region demands only 45 megawatts.

“Tanesco is also fixing automatic voltage regulators in Masasi and Tunduru to address power interruptions in Ruvuma,” he said.

The minister explained this as he was responding to Ms Stella Manyanya (Nyasa-CCM), who had expressed concern over continuous power interruptions in the region.

Committee Vice-Chairman Seif Gulamali hailed the ministry for its commitment to improving access to electricity and fuel in the country. He said the committee was impressed with the speed in which 80 per cent of the villages across the country had been electrified.

The game viewing centre piece of Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the grassy floor that stands at an altitude of 1,800m. The crater is dominated by a cover of open savannah that looks lush and green during the rainy season but is altogether dustier and more windswept during drier months. Important micro habitats within the crater floor include the fever-tree forest at Lerai, the shallow saline Lake Magadi, the lush reed-fringed Gorigor Swamp, and a permanent hippo pool fed by Ngoitokitok Springs.

The open grasslands of the crater floor is home to immense concentrations of grazing antelops all year through, with numbers peaking between December and May, the main rainy season. Most common are blue wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra, resident populations of which are estimated at 10,000 and 5,000 respectively. Wildebeest and zebra are commonly seen together and/or in the company of other grazers such as the diminutive Thomson’s gazelle, the larger and longer-horned Grant’s gazelle, and the rather doleful looking topi and Coke’s hartebeest). Other less numerous antelopes include the handsome Defassa waterbuck (which differs from the common waterbuck in having a redder tinge to the coat and a full white rump), the secretive bushbuck, and the massive eland, all of which are most commonly seen in the vicinity of Lerai Forest or swampy areas.

Animals

The crater floor supports significant populations of all the Big Five. Most commonly the African buffalo, large herds of which are often seen marching across the crater floor in search of grazing or water. Least likely to be seen is the leopard, which is resident on the crater floor, but only in small numbers due to a lack of suitable habitat, and tends to be retiring and secretive.

Ngorongoro Crater serves as something of a retirement ground for old elephant bulls, many of which sport outsized tusks to dimensions now seldom seen in parts of Africa that have suffered from commercial poaching in recent decades. Lerai Forest and the nearby Gorigor Swamp are the favoured haunt of these mighty male tuskers, up to 70 of which are resident at any given time. Oddly, no elephant breeding herds are resident on the crater, though females and family herds do pass through from time to time.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in East Africa to look for the black rhino, an endangered species with a very restricted presence in Tanzania. Between 1964 and 1992, the crater’s resident population of these cumbersome beasts decreased from an estimated 100 individuals to no more than 10 as a result of poaching. Since then, the local rhino population and the diversity of the gene pool has been boosted by the introduction of several individuals from South Africa, though the authorities are reluctant to publicise actual numbers. All the crater’s rhinos have been fitted with a tracking device in their horns, in order to monitor their movements and to discourage poachers. They tend to range between the Lerai Forest and Lake Magadi, browsing in the latter by night and then moving into more open terrain by day. Their unusually pale coloration is attributable to a predilection for bathing in saline Lake Magadi and rolling in the fringing salt flats.

The floor of Ngorongoro Crater reputedly supports Africa’s densest concentration of lions, with up to 100 individuals present in suitable conditions. That said, lion numbers do fluctuate somewhat, due to a combination of disease (the closed nature of the crater makes its inhabitants particularly vulnerable to epidemics), emigration from and immigration to the surrounding highlands, and occasional pride takeovers that often result in the new dominant male killing all unrelated cubs and adolescents. It would be unusual to spend a day in the crater and not see any lions, which are generally very relaxed around vehicles, though they might be encountered just about anywhere so it is difficult to predict where you might find them.

Other predators are well represented too. Most populous is the spotted hyena, which is Africa’s second largest carnivore after the lion, and tends to be less dependent on scavenging than is popularly assumed. An estimated 400 individuals are resident in the crater, so you are unlikely to spend long there without stumbling across one. If you specifically want to seek out a hyena, head to the eastern shore of Lake Magadi, where they often rest up during the day, occasionally trying to sneak up and snack on the flamingos that flock the shallows.

The open grasslands of the crater floor are the perfect cheetah habitat, and there are also plenty of small antelope for these feline speedsters to feed on, so it’s a bit surprising that none were present as recently as the 1990s. The most likely explanation for this is competition with the dense populations of lion and spotted hyenas, both of which will routinely chase a cheetah off a fresh kill. Since 2000, however, cheetahs have recolonised the crater floor and they are now quite commonly seen stalking through the plains in search of gazelle.

Other common predators are the golden jackal, black-backed jackal and bat-eared fox, with the former being most likely to be encountered due to its relatively diurnal habits. By contrast, giraffe and impala, both common on the surrounding plains, are totally absent from the crater floor. In the case of the giraffe, this is possibly attributable to a lack of suitable browsing fodder, or to the difficulty of descending the steep crater walls, but the absence of impala is a mystery.

Birds

A high proportion of the 550-plus bird species recorded in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area inhabit the crater floor. For casual visitors, a highlight is the large flocks of lesser and greater flamingo that aggregate in Lake Magadi, tinting its margins pink from a distance. Common grassland specialists include ostrich (the world’s largest bird), Kori bustard (the world’s heaviest flying bird, known for its spectacular mating dance) and a host of smaller ground birds including the exquisite rosy-throated longclaw, the babbler-like rufous-tailed weaver (a species endemic to the Tanzanian interior) and various larks, wheatears and pipits. Moist grassland often supports flocks of the lovely grey crowned crane and (in the rainy season) huge flocks of migrant white, black and Adbim’s storks. Lerai forest is the place to seek out striking woodland specialists such as Hildebrandt’s starling, green wood hoopoe and Fischer’s lovebird.

Raptors are abundant. The most conspicuous species is the handsome augur buzzard, sometimes seen here in its unusual melanistic form, but always distinguishable by its reddish tail. The crater floor is ideal habitat for the secretary bird, an anomalous long-legged terrestrial hunter that stands up to 1.5m tall and feeds mainly on snakes, which it stamps to death in a bizarre flailing dance. The most interesting of seven vultures recorded in the crater is the Egyptian vulture, a localised species whose who know to crack open ostrich eggs by holding a stone in its beak, making it the only avian tool-user. Finally, on the subject of scavenging birds, watch out for the black kites that haunt the picnic site at Ngoitokitok Springs, swooping down on unprepared tourists to snatch the food from their hands!

The Afromontane forest that swathes the crater rim supports a very different flora and fauna to the crater floor. Mammals are thinly distributed, but the forest does support a dense population of elusive leopards, plenty of blue monkeys and bushbuck, as well as the secretive bushpig and the localised tree hyrax (which is more difficult to see than the rock hyrax, but reveals its presence with an far-carrying eerie nocturnal call that sounds like it comes from a much larger creature). Colourful forest birds often seen in lodge gardens on the crater rim include bar-tailed trogon, cinnamon-chested bee-eater, baglafecht weaver, tacazze sunbird, malachite sunbird, golden-winged sunbird and Schalow’s turaco.

Indonesia has a history of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, with more than 2,000 killed in a 2018 Sulawesi quake.

The United Arab Emirates has provided urgent humanitarian aid to people affected by the earthquake that rocked the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The initiative was launched on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, with the monitoring of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), to support those affected by the earthquake and offer them urgent relief aid.

The ERC coordinated with the UAE Embassy in Jakarta and relevant Indonesian authorities to ensure the fast delivery of the aid, to meet the needs of those affected by the disaster, improve their conditions and ease their burdens.

An ERC delegation recently arrived in Indonesia to oversee the relief operations and distribute humanitarian aid in the affected island.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed visited Cairo Dec. 17 for talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi. A presidential statement said the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has joined the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) as an observer.

“Sisi [underlined] the importance of the added value that the UAE will contribute to the forum’s activities to serve the strategic interests and enhance cooperation and partnership between the forum countries,” the statement said.

The EMGF was established as an intergovernmental organization by Egypt, Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Jordan and Palestine. Founders say the forum aims to facilitate talks among Mediterranean countries about exporting natural gas, cooperating on various energy issues and advancing the construction of an undersea pipeline that would transfer gas to the south of Europe.

France has applied to join the Cairo-based forum, while the United States and the European Union requested observer status.

Energy-hungry Turkey has denounced the EMGF as an attempt to exclude it from the gas equation in the Eastern Mediterranean. In August, Ankara dispatched its seismic survey vessel, Oruc Reis, into a disputed area in the Eastern Mediterranean to search for oil and gas deposits, triggering an outcry from NATO member Greece and the EU.

Observers who spoke to Al-Monitor said the UAE membership in the EMGF will provide a boost to efforts aimed at countering Turkish actions in the Mediterranean.

Mohamed Orabi, former Egyptian minister of foreign affairs and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in parliament, said the EMGF and other economic groupings will be the engine of political developments in the region in the coming years.

“Abu Dhabi and Cairo are playing a significant role in thwarting the Turkish expansionist policies in the region,” Orabi told Al-Monitor. “The UAE membership in the gas forum and its political weight will add to the forum’s role in the future and help it counter the Turkish gas ambitions in the area,” he added.

The Egyptian presidency said talks between Sisi and Zayed “showed a mutual understanding on [the need] to pursue joint efforts to address risks that threaten the security and stability of the region.”

In 2019, Turkey signed a controversial maritime jurisdiction agreement with Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), to the fury of Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, who said the deal infringes on their economic rights in the Mediterranean.

Turkish military support to the GNA has also drawn the ire of Egypt, which threatened in June to militarily intervene in Libya if the Turkish-backed GNA forces continued to advance on the oil-rich city of Sirte.

Egypt and the UAE are the main backers of eastern Libyan strongman Khalifa Hifter, whose forces are fighting the GNA.

Ramadan Abul Ela, a professor of petroleum engineering at Pharos University in Alexandria, said the UAE and Egypt are active in countering Turkey’s policies in the region.

“The UAE membership in the forum will help further enhance coordination among the forum countries with a view to ending Turkish provocations,” Abul Ela told Al-Monitor.

Abul Ela, however, opined that the UAE membership in the forum was a “political message” rather than a move that would render economic benefits.

“The Emirati participation in the gas forum primarily aimed to refute recent allegations about tension between Egypt and the UAE over the Gulf state’s rapprochement with Israel,” Abul Ela said. “Egypt’s announcement that the UAE has joined the EMGF shows that political coordination between the two allies is still strong and that the UAE relations with Israel don’t affect its relationship with Egypt.”

On Aug. 13, Sisi welcomed the UAE-Israel normalization deal and its provisions, which included a suspension of Israeli plans to annex parts of the Palestinian West Bank. Sisi also called Zayed to congratulate him on the agreement.

In October, state-owned Israeli company EAPC said it had signed a preliminary agreement with MED-RED Land Bridge in Abu Dhabi to transport oil from the UAE to Europe through a pipeline that connects the Red Sea city of Eilat to the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon, bypassing Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Abul Ela said there is already the Sumed pipeline in Egypt, which carries oil products from the Ain Sukhna terminal in the Gulf of Suez near the Red Sea to the offshore Sidi Kerir in Alexandria on the Mediterranean.

“When reports emerged about Emirati-Israeli coordination to transport oil from the Gulf to Europe, this has given the impression that there was tension in the relationship between Egypt and the UAE,” Abul Ela said. “The UAE membership in the forum, however, sent a strong political message that the Egyptian-Emirati relations remain strong, even after the Gulf state’s normalization agreement with Israel.”

The UAE has sent a total of Dh16.5 million food aid to refugees fleeing the escalating violence in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

According to World Food Programme, a humanitarian crisis is escalating on the Ethiopia-Sudan border.

The unrest has triggered a massive wave of displacement, uprooting more than 100,000 civilians. More than 40,000 people from Tigray have already entered Sudan, mostly through Hamdayet and Lugdi crossing points. The flow of people is expected to continue unless there is a halt to the fighting.

The WFP noted the UAE was the first country to announce support for WFP emergency food assistance to Ethiopian refugees in Sudan.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) commented: “The UAE attaches great importance to the refugee issue around the world. The UAE’s initiatives contribute to strengthening international efforts to alleviate the suffering of refugees and improve their livelihoods and humanitarian conditions.”

The WFP-managed United Nations Humanitarian Air Service is also expected to start light aircraft services to Gadaref in Sudan to enhance service delivery to some of the camps. The WFP needs at least US$24.6 million (Dh90.2 million) to support the influx of refugees for six months.

Dr Mohammad Olama, paediatric and functional neurosurgeon from Rashid Hospital, who was part of the team, told Gulf News: “Internationally too, since 1995, only 250 such surgeries have been carried out.”

The extremely delicate six-hour surgery was performed on the foetus that was diagnosed with myelomeningocoele — a type of spina bifida. The foetus weighed only 700gm. The expert team carried out the surgery, maintaining highest standards of hygiene and sanitisation in line with the protocols for COVID-19.

According to Mona Abdul Razzak Al Tahlak, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and CEO of the hospital: “Spina Bifida is a congenital neural tube defect that occurs in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal cord does not develop or close properly, leaving open a bundle of nerves of the spinal cord in a sac on the patient’s back. One of the most common causes of Spina Bifida is a deficiency of Folic acid in the mother. These exposed nerves can seriously affect the mobility of the child, disrupt bladder functions and normal healing capacity of the body as well as cause hydrocephaly (filling up of the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain), which requires a brain shunt surgery later.

The defect was picked up in young Emirati mother FA — who already had two healthy children and was in the third trimester of her third pregnancy — during an ultrasound test in the 24th week of her pregnancy. A foetal MRI confirmed the position and location of the spinal lesion, she added.

Discussing the logistics of the critical surgery, Dr Al Tahlak, said: “In a complicated surgery like this, there is extensive counselling of parents and feasibility assessments are carried out. The level and position of the spinal lesion has to be determined, the mother should have had no previous uterine scars and must have undergone full-term previous deliveries. We apprised the parents of both the risks and the benefits. In this case, both the parents were onboard and post-surgery the mother is doing well as she will deliver in the 34th week.“

Dr Olama added: “The surgery was carried out in the 25th week, leaving the potential for the spine to develop for the next ten weeks. The surgery will enable the foetus to move in the womb and therefore, increase its chances of gaining substantial mobility in the limbs. This will reduce chances of lack of limb mobility normally seen in these cases.“

The team of surgeons also included top US surgeons Dr Samer AlBaba, a paediatric neurosurgeon, and Dr Cole Douglas Greves, maternal and foetal medicine specialist.

Humaid Al Qutami, director general of DHA, congratulated the Latifa Hospital team for the medical feat, saying such pioneering work was in line with the vision of the wise rulers of the UAE who envisaged excellence in health care and looked to provide the best medical care to the community.
