YES Berbagi Batch 1

The alumni of YES program 2010-2011 currently working on an alumni social project entitled “YES Berbagi”. Berbagi in Indonesian means “to share”. YES Berbagi is designed to inspire young people to achieve their dreams by doing interactive discussion and active learning in emergency schools around Jakarta Metropolitan Era (Jabodetabek) that mostly inhabit by the underprivileged youth. This project is planned to held in 3 months, once in every month and hopefully could still countinue thrice in a year in the future.

This program held in collaboration with US Embassy in Indonesia, Education USA Indonesia, Bina Antar Budaya Foundation, AMINEF (American Indonesian Exchange Foundation), and IYAA (Indonesian YES Alumni Association).

Our first project held on 16 to 18 July 2012 in SMP Terbuka Ibnu Sina. SMP Terbuka Ibnu Sina is located on Jl. Riau Kampung Rawa Barat Rt 004 Rw 05, Kel. Pondok Pucung, Kel. Pondok Aren, Tangerang Selatan 15229. This school is sponsored by Maleo Foundation which is initiated by a group of religious women (Quranic Club) who care about education and health of underprivileged community around Bintaro Jaya. Therefore SMP Terbuka Ibnu Sina is made for the underpriviledged youth who are willing to pursue their education but don’t have enough money to afford a reguler education. This school offer free of charge for those youth to have a good education so that they can still pursue their dreams, since most of the teachers are volunteer and school supplies given by the school are donation.

The reason why we choose this school because we think this school is ideal for our project . The criteria that make this school fitted with our project are:

1. Most of the students are having finacial issues so they cannot afford a good education. We want to help underpriviledged youth to have the same motivation, spirit and passion as we do in achieving their dreams.

2. This school is located in the suburban of Jakarta in which youth around this area are also expected to support the development of the capital city.

3. Junior high school (middle school) students would be the ideal to assist for achieving their dream, because we want them to continue their study to a specialized school

4. which is required more skill such as SMK or Academy instead of going to SMA and college that require a lot of money.

5. As a part of YES Alumni, we don’t want the impact of our program stop after a year of program has finished and only benefit to ourselves. However, we want to give a greater impact to the community by sharing our experience that we have got through our exchange years, generating the volunterism, giving inspiration and motivations.

The main comitte of YES Berbagi are Aryanda Ondrio as the Project Officer, Nadya Azzahra and Dwinia Emil as the Program Coordinator, Haikal Eki Ramadhan as Secretary and Treasury, Nadia Shifa Hardani as Public Relation Officer, Annisa Sabila Aufary Chandra as Creative Team, and Hanissa Zianda as Secretary. This project also welcome all of the volunteers who have the same vision and mission to pursue the goal of this project. So far, there were 28 volunteers for the first batch of YES Berbagi coming from both returnee and non returnee of the YES program.

Initially, this program wants to make a “Class of Inspiration” which is designed similarly to the Career Day in the School of United States. This class will be a media for YES alumni to share their stories and experience in order to inspire young kids to pursue their dream as high as possible. However as the development of this project, it become more flexible and dynamic to serve and support the school according to their needs such as the form of this “Class of Inspiration” delivered in the School Orientation of SMP Terbuka Ibnu Sina.

YES Berbagi program wants to give a different perspective of how the School Orientation should be held in Indonesia, unlike the common School Orientation that focused mainly on the interaction of the junior to the senior which is sometimes have a high tendency for bullying to be happened. This program tried to make the orientation become more fun, inspiring, creative and interactive so that it can prepare the students to face their school life as well as their future life ahead. In this program, the students are facilitated to think critically and have a better self esteem to be confidence speaking in front of many people to deliver their thoughts.

The first day began with a flag ceremony and then continued with an introduction of the comittee and the volunteer of YES Berbagi to the students. The activities followed by games and ice breaking, also group distribution. The group distribution aimed to make the activties run more smoothly so the students could be more focus and have a good interactive discussion. The first session was exploring self potential and passion which facilitated students to express themselves elaborately and creatively. The next session was inventing dreams which the students were asked to write down their bucket list as many as possible. The chaperone of the group then facilitated them to give a better direction of how to classified their wish to be accomplished in a short term and long term period of time. The session also discussed about the definition of success and how each of the sudents define succes and how to achieve it. They also asked to write down their dream in a bubble whcih it will be captured and the printed of the photo will be used for crafting in the last day.

The next day filled up with mini outbonds to enhance their leadership skills and teamwork. There were move the rope, shipwreck and telling stories, which were designed in a fun way and in a form competition between the groups. After that, the activities done in the outbond were discussed in a larger forum so that all of the student would get the message behind each outbounds. They were also encouraged to develop an organisation inside their school such as student council. The day ended with a session of “Entrepreneurship” and future exploration by US Embassy, Education USA and AMINEF (American Indonesian Exchange Foundation)

The last day were entertained with drama performances from Ibnu Sina students entitled “Kota Impian” (Dream City) which is guided by the chaperone of the group and various performances from the comittee and the volunteer. The students also decorated their classroom by making display from the bubbles of their dream that have been creatively designed by them. To end up the all of the actitivies of the program, there were announcement of the winner of the drama, best student, group slogan, speech from Ms. Sri (Maleo Foundation Representatives), and also donated books as a part of National Book Drive project that held by Bina Antarbudaya Fondation and IYAA (Indonesian YES Alumni Association).

Hopefully this project could be sustainable in the future and give a great impact not only to the underprivilleged community that we served but also to the volunteer so that they can ehance their sense to share to their community.

Halo adik-adik! Tanggal 16 Maret – 15 April 2012 Chapter Jakarta membuka pendaftaran bagi siswa kelas X/1 SMA/SMK/MA/sederajat boleh mendaftar untuk program pertukaran pelajar yang seru ini. Kalau terpilih, kamu akan diberangkatkan di tahun 2013-2014 nanti. Mau tau lebih banyak tentang program ini? Semoga tanya-jawab ini bisa membantu ya.

1. Apa sih AFS dan Bina Antarbudaya? AFS adalah salah satu program pertukaran pelajar. Di Indonesia AFS punya rekan namanya Bina Antarbudaya yang setiap tahun memberangkatkan siswa SMA dari berbagai latar belakang budaya, ekonomi, etnis ke berbagai negara di dunia. Bina Antarbudaya berbasis relawan dengan 18 chapter di seluruh Indonesia: Banda Aceh, Medan, Padang, Palembang, Bogor,Bandung, Jakarta, Karawang, Semarang, Jogja, Malang,Surabaya, Banjarmasin, Makassar, Bali, Mataram, Balikpapan, dan Samarinda.

2. Siapa yang boleh mendaftar? Semua siswa yang duduk di kelas X/1 SMA/ SMK/MA saat mendaftar boleh mengikuti seleksi. Kandidat akan dipilih melalui tiga tahap seleksi. Pendaftaran tidak dibuka untuk siswa kelas XI/2 SMA

3. Saya siswa akselerasi, boleh mendaftar? Boleh. Tapi jangan lupa isi Surat Keterangan Akselerasi ya. Surat ini hanya untuk mereka yang saat ini sedang mengikuti program akselerasi, kalau kamu aksel waktu SMP tidak perlu melampirkan surat ini .

4. Wah, susah ya pakai seleksi. Memang tahapannya apa saja? Setiap chapter akan melakukan rangkaian proses yang sama:

§ Pendaftaran: 16 Maret – 15 April 2012 – di Prambors Concept Store dan SMAN 2 Tangerang Selatan

§ Seleksi Tahap I: Pengetahuan Umum, Bahasa Inggris, dan Essay Bahasa Indonesia – 29 April 2012 – di FISIP Universitas Indonesia

§ Seleksi Tahap II: Wawancara Kepribadian dan English Interview – 20 Mei 2012 – di Universitas Bakrie (dalam konfirmasi)

§ Seleksi Tahap III: Dinamika Kelompok – 10 Juni 2012 – di STBA LIA Pangadegan

§ Tahap Nasional: Seleksi Berkas

§ Untuk Program YES tambahan Seleksi Nasional.

5. Musti rangking dong? Nilai raport dan performa akademis hanya menjadi salah satu elemen penilaian kami, tapi bukan satu-satunya. Tidak semua siswa yang rangking berhasil menjadi kandidat, tetapi semua yang menjadi kandidat pastinya berhasil menunjukkan mereka pintar dengan karakter mereka masing-masing.

6. Musti jago Bahasa Inggris dong? Kamu belum tentu ditempatkan di negara berbahasa Inggris, jadi kesempurnaan berbahasa Inggris bukan yang kami cari. Selama kamu bisa menunjukkan kamu berusaha untuk berkomunikasi (setidaknya) dengan keterbatasan bahasa yang ada, seharusnya tidak ada masalah. Menurut pengalaman di negara tujuan selain bahasa, akan ada halangan budaya, kebiasaan, dan lainnya. Jadi setidaknya kami bisa memulai dari yang paling sederhana, kan?

7. Program pertukaran pelajarnya ke mana saja? Kami ada 9 pilihan negara: Amerika Serikat, Jepang, Swiss, Jerman, Italia, Perancis, Norwegia, Belanda, dan Belgia. Untuk siswa akselerasi, pilihan negara hanya: Jerman, Jepang, Italia, Belgia, dan Belanda (referring ke Surat Pernyataan Akselerasi). FYI, kamu boleh memberi rekomendasi negara pilihan kamu saat pengisian formulir, tetapi penempatan kamu di mana tergantung keputusan Dewan Juri Nasional dan kuota setiap negara.

8. Memang berapa yang terpilih untuk berangkat? Kuota setiap tahun berbeda dan ini ditentukan banyak hal. Tetapi, jumlah siswa yang diberangkatkan dari seluruh Chapter di Indoneisa untuk semua program ada di kisaran 80-100 siswa per tahunnya.

9. Tunggu, ini pasti ada biayanya dong? Bina Antarbudaya adalah program nirlaba yang bergerak di bidang pertukaran budaya. Kami memastikan, bahwa siswa/siswi yang kami kirim merupakan siswa/i terbaik yang terpilih melalui seleksi, tanpa memandang latar belakang ekonominya. Dan siswa Indonesia yang layak berangkat datang dari berbagai keadaan ekonomi. Untuk saat ini biaya yang perlu kamu pikirkan hanyalah biaya pendaftaran Rp. 50.000,-. Beranikan diri kamu untuk mendaftar dan fokuskan diri untuk melewati setiap tahapan seleksi. Kalau kamu memang kandidat yang layak untuk berangkat, kami akan berusaha semampu kami agar kamu bisa berangkat walaupun ada keterbatasan biaya. Selama ini kami juga mencarikan sponsor dan melakukan subsidi silang dengan kandidat yang secara ekonomi lebih mampu.

10. Ah, tetap saja musti bayar kan, saya tidak akan mampu!It breaks our heart to see financial situation hinder you from applying, cause we will never know what you've got if you don't try. Sekali lagi, ikuti tahapan seleksi dan tunjukkan kepada kami kamu layak berangkat. Kakak-kakak returnee yang sudah ada, datang dari berbagai keterbatasan ekonomi dan mereka berhasil menunjukkan kemampuan mereka dan akhirnya berangkat .Seneng kan, kalau itu terjadi .

11. Memangnya tidak ada beasiswa? Program Bina Antarbudaya pada dasarnya adalah program beasiswa yang terbagi menjadi beasiswa parsial/penuh. Di host country, host family dan sekolah melakukannya dengan sukarela. Kami memiliki berbagai sponsor untuk membantu pendanaan program ini dan memastikan siswa Indonesia bisa mengalami pengalaman antarbudaya. Sponsor kami datang dari berbagai perusahaan, individu, pemerintahan negara tujuan, dll.

12. Beasiswa yang ada apa saja?

§ Program YES : disediakan oleh US State Department untuk negara dengan populasi muslim yang signifikan. Pemilihan dilakukan lewat seleksi di tingkat nasional bagi kandidat chapter yang telah dipilih.

13. Apa saya bisa memilih lebih dari satu program? Bisa, seperti halnya pemilihan negara, kamu boleh memberikan rekomendasi program yang kamu inginkan, tetapi keputusan penempatan program bergantung kepada hasil tahapan seleksi dan rekomendasi tim juri. Program yang kami tawarkan di tahun ini:

§ AFS: Program pertukaran pelajar selama 11 bulan ke sembilan negara: Amerika Serikat, Jepang, Jerman, Belanda, Swiss, Norwegia, Italia, Perancis, Belgia. Keberangkatan : Maret (Jepang) & Agustus / September (Eropa & A.S) ; Waktu Kedatangan: Februari(Jepang) & Juli (tahun berikutnya)

§ The Kennedy-Lugar YES Program: Program beasiswa pertukaran pelajar dari US State Department bagi pelajar dari negara dengan populasi penduduk Muslim yang signifikan. Pelajar dari tingkat chapter akan melalui seleksi tambahan di tingkat nasional sebelum akhirnya terpilih dalam program ini. Selama 11 bulan siswa akan tinggal dan melalui kehidupan sebagai pelajar di berbagai negara bagian di Amerika Serikat dalam menjalani misi pemahaman budaya. Berangkat: Agustus, Kepulangan: Juli tahun berikutnya

14. Saya tidak tinggal di Jakarta, apa saya masih bisa mendaftar? Ya, kamu bisa mendaftar ke chapter yang paling dekat dengan tempat tinggal kamu. Ingat, cari yang paling memudahkan kamu, karena selama proses pendaftaran hingga akhirnya terpilih sangat mungkin kamu diminta untuk datang ke chapter setempat. Kalau kamu merasa akses yang termudah adalah ke Jakarta, kamu boleh saja mendaftar di Chapter Jakarta. Tanggal pendaftaran di setiap chapter berbeda-beda, harap menghubungi chapter masing-masing secara langsung mengenai jadwal yang lebih akurat. 15. Lalu sekolah saya di sini? Kami akan meminta kamu untuk mengajukan cuti sekolah bila sudah mendapatkan penempatan. AFS adalah school based program, tetapi bukan academic oriented program. Kami meminta setiap siswa pertukaran yang sudah menyelesaikan program dengan Bina Antarbudaya untuk kembali ke sekolah masing-masing dan meneruskan proses edukasi mereka sembari membagikan pembelajaran dan pemahaman budaya lewat keseharian di lingkungan terdekat termasuk sekolah.

16. Apa program ini diketahui oleh Dinas Pendidikan? Ya. Kami secara resmi menginformasikan perihal program ini kepada Departemen Pendidikan Nasional karena program ini berbasis sekolah, sesuatu yang berhubungan erat dengan Depdiknas. Namun, karena sifat Bina Antarbudaya sebagai yayasan independen, kami tidak tertaut dengan institusi mana pun sehingga pelaksanaannya dilakukan secara mandiri.

Sup Bloggerz ? Been a while I haven’t post anything, most because the internet connection in here are so bad. Well, I don’t really hv enough time also since school and stuff took a whole time in my life right now.

Anyway, I’m feel so blessed, 2 months since I got here I make many great well progress. I did spread out my cv to ton of companies, radios, production house, management and so on. Then ? Alhamdulillah, I heard back from them so fast, they offered some good position. First, *** radio offered me to be a ‘tandem announcer’ (I’m so happy for that, that’s what I need and wait for a long long time.. but the management contract hasn’t fair for me, so yeah I didn’t take it). The second one is you know what ? I played for some FTV (Film Television) hahahhahahaha, it is so funny for me at least, but that’s a great experience thou, watch out dude :I Then a lil bit more seriously, I passed the interview to be Book guide at some international bookstore, well I’ll do the Internship first for one month then they’ll recruit me to be permanent staff (amiin, hopefully ya). In the other side, I’m still waiting for some great position, check check and re check my email, phone every single time (that’s what I’m doing right now, lmao). I do have an appointment to do Announcer audition, Presenter audition and many else. aaaaaah, its looks like American thingy change my life, never thought before to get part time job while I’m still in high school…….

Beside that, Organizations are the main thing in my life. I’m joined back to ARCJS (Alumni Remaja CERIA Jakarta Selatan) or we called it’s a young ambassador of south Jakarta. Feel so honours, they choosed me to be ‘Ketuplak” (Ketua Pelaksana) or Chief of event for Meet and Great Alumni, Wish me luck guys! As a state Alumni (US Dept of State) I’ve been involved at US Embassy Jakarta and atAmerica cultural house. Involved in AFS-YES Bina Antarbudaya also will be my next priority, yeah together we can change world AFS’ersI also my routine is I got ton of invitation to be MC-Presenter and speaker. Yeah, I do love my job. Talk to people, share my thoughts, hear what they think and learn together. One main things, please pray for me…. I apply for some competition this September-October, (September wish) wish me up folks!

Yeah, looks like I like spent my time out of school. Yeah it is. But I do remember I’m still a student at high school -_- oohrggggzzz, never mind. Nothing interested to talk about school, never -_- . Okay, a lil bit update for me, hope you all guys have a good time up there. Anyway, I did post this things not to show off or cocky, but just share, I hope it could be your inspiration. Aaminn. It’s been a while that I didn’t post anything, too busy with my life in here, which means good. haha. Anyway, I’ll go back to Indonesia this week! firstly, I’ll visit Washington DC for 3 days then will take flight back home from Washington DC- Frankfurt- Jakarta. Tomorrow I’m gonna leave Darien at 3 PM, then will go to DC to meet up my pals up there. Packing just try to killing me lately, could you believe that I wanna leave tomorrow but I still need to pack some stuff and my luggage always shows up that they are overweight, but dinar my best bro gimme a good news, haha. So literally I can bring 3 huge checked luggage and 2 carry on, YAY! Cucpcup wawwaw mas dinar J and yeah even I just wanna buy new luggage tomorrow. No rush-lol

Do I miss Darien and NewYorkCity? OF COURSE I MISS BOTH OF THE WONDERFUL PLACES in States! I will miss my Family, dad, mum, Katie, Luke, Ellen, Marian, Grammy Carol, EVERYONE and also my lovely lucy. But I believe someday I’ll back to States, Inshaallah. Do not need to worry, because if god willing we can meet up someday, amen. I wanna tell you a ton of stories, how’s life in this terrific family, but don’t hv much time to explain, too many stories that I had, but I just can say that ‘your life would be amahzeng and gorgeous with this family’, love ya Bruce Hill Family! Thank you for everything.

Anyway, I’ve to pack my stuff very very soon and tonight we will have special dinner to celebrate Ellen’s birthday and also this is my last dinner too T_T. Tonight is my last night in Darien, don’t know what to say, this feeling so weird. Don’t know how to explain it because I don’t know the exact word to describe what I’m feeling right now. I’m going to miss darien like a crazy!

This is a short and last post in Ermuricaaah, I’ll be back to you as soon as I can. Since I know I’ll be back to my routine with the crazy senior year, so I’m not make any promises to keep post-stories frequently. I’ll do my best tho! It’s been a wonderful journey, had a great experience to meet the fabulous young scientist from all over the world and realize that’s world is not a small places as I was thought before. ISWEEEP gimme such an unforgettable experience. It wasn’t just a competition and search who’s the best, who’s gonna get prizes or medals but more than that ISWEEEP gimme such a big lesson that how important to understand the world and world will understand you!

Taken a part of the annual international science Olympiad is such a big honoured for me. It’s a big deal that I was appointed to represent the United States through CT and was compete with another young scientist from 70 countries. Once again many thanks to CT state, US government and ISWEEEP!!

What I was expected before? to grab some bronze, silver, gold or even money??? NOT at all and was my science project gave a big hit or a big flop? Was the judging a delightful experience or was it a big nightmare for me? Do I really care? Hm, not really. Honestly, what I was expected before are to looking for new experience, meet young scientist from all of continent, making friends and get a long with them. This is such a cool things ever from this event. What a great quality time to hang out and meet the kids from Iraq, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Bosnia, Hongkong, Georgia, South Africa, USA, India, JORDAN and many more, it was the best moment ever. I felt like I was attended the United Nations conference. Well, actually this week I also will take a part at GCIMUN (Global Classroom International Model United Nations) Conference and will take a place at UN Headquarter New York, wish me up!

Anyway, from this event I was thinking is a long way to go. Many things that we have to do TOGETHER. Right now, I’ve something that comes up in my mind and am I wrong if I wanna majoring political/int’l relation for college? (crap). In the other side, I wanted to visit my friends in everywhere, have some discuss and make some science project together and give a contribution to the world. Try to create a better environment for a better future. Is not just about you and me but all of us. Holaaaa, I knew, its such a long time I haven't post anything yet to share with you guys. Well its mostly because I've to do so much stuff. That I mention to you in my previous post, April through May will be the crazy months ever !!!!

I remember that i said to you, I've cancelled my trip to Midwest but I changed my mind, then what ? I will do trip to Midwest, YAY!. I'm going to Minneapolis first, Chicago, then Indianapolis. My flight is tomorrow morning, can’t wait!. FYI, for this trip I haven’t my details itinerary yet. Which means I will do this trip with 'blindness' (lol). I want to feel like a ‘real’ backpacker, no reservation (well, I've my reservation for flight, bus, and hostel) but still I don’t have any details stuff what I'm gonna do there. Sounds interesting or not really ? haha. Wish me luck and hope will get a lot of fun there! Have fun for your break too guys if you have it, if you don’t have it, I'll pray hope you have a good time ya, especially for my fellow that still struggling with national examination for their senior high school graduation in Indonesia! I know you will do your best and get the best result! my pray for all of you fellas!. Also for my sister and brother who want to fight for National Exam next week, my fully support and pray for you dear.

Anyway, I've been forget to tell you about my Eastcoast backpacking trip stories. I'm really-really sorry. I will refer it to my friend blog if you wanna hear more details, Nadya's Blog. But I will try to write up the stories sometimes. (If you have concern or question about Backpacking trip and stuff, please contact me. well, I'm not expert on it but I will help as much as i can).

I will back to you probably in mid of May. Kinda busy with all of those things that I’ve planned since a long time ago. I will start this crazy months with relaxing (lol) I'm going to Midwest just for backpacking and a bit of sightsee, then come home have a regular school days. Well we have homecoming week right after spring break, usually we have to dress up with ‘unique and weird dress code’. In the same week, I’ve trip to New York City with my humanities class, Afterwards I’ve to prepare for my Science competition in Texas in the first week of May (beside that I’m feel so bad that I can’t join with my best friends to spend the weekends in Martha’s vineyard island in Massachusetts for celebrate Sara’s birthday, sorry Sara but I love you and enjoy guys!). Next, 2 days after my science competition, I’ve United Nations Int'l Conferences for 3 days in UN Headquarters in New York (I still have to do position paper, speech and other stuff -,-). Then, I still have a class trip to New York City to do some observation and research there, and on the next day I’ve trip to Philadelphia with my YES NYC Cluster for 4 days. Huff, Isn’t neat huh ? well, I’m glad and grateful that I still have something to do and have a chance to skip school days (haha). Wish me luck guys! And Hope your day as happy as mine!

In this tight time, I also try to apply for some regional summit. This summit will talk about the ‘Entrepreneur, Volunteer and other social activities’. I hope I will pass the selection and will represent Indonesia in this summit and my mission is to send the message to the world that we have to realize that the important things right now is to take care the ‘needy kids and poor people’ and help them to get a better life in the future. So, keep open our minds and please help your community and society. Be aware and sensitive with our environment and save our next generation! We can start to do the small things to get the big impact!!!

Saturday, March 19

Marian and I picked up nadya, cenna and untari in John F kennedy Airport. Kebetulan, Marian’s sister namanya jane bersedia rumah nya kita tumpangin. Alhamdulillah, jadilah kita semua stay di Brooklyn. We drop our suitcase there and a lil bit had conversation with Jane families. Then, we catched up by subway to Statue of Liberty and visited the Ellis Island, we didn’t go to the crown but well we had a chance to touch the liberty as well. Well, You have to pay for the tickets to go to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Unless if you dont want pay for it, you can use the ferry, the ferry are kinda like shuttle and just back and forth from and to Manhattan - Staten Island (Part of New York City) but still you can see the Liberty. Setelah sesi jeprat-jepret yg lumayan lama dan muter-muter patung yg jadi symbol Negara adi kuasa ini, akhirnya kita lapar juga and had lunch di Liberty Resto. Then, we took a subway to Empire State Building. In there, you can see a great view dri ketinggian 1050 feet or on the 86th floor. Its pretty amazing but yeah it was to cold, haha. Then, We went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, atau terkenal dengan nama ‘The Met’. You can see many section parts of the world history and art here. But the most major here are classical antiquity and Ancient Egypt. Setelah dari The Met sekitar jam 9 pm, waktunya kita buat makan malam. We took a bus to go to Midtown. And we stopped at St. Patricks church and its exactly in front of The Rockefeller Center. They still have Ice skate rink there, but for us it was to cold to do ice skate. Hm, kalau kamu pernah nonton home alone part ‘lost in New York’, pasti tau dong Rockefeller dan ice pond rink nya? I’ve been there like last Christmas, and its amazing stand up ijn underneath big-huge Christmas tree! Well, we went up to top of the rock, ga kalah keren dari Empire State building loh dari ketingian (I’m forget exactly, tpi sekitar 76^th floor or something) dengan deck observatory yg terbuka kita bisa ngerasain dingin nya udara malam new york dari gedung tertinggi di mid town New York ini. oh ya, Karna kita kesana nya malam, It so fabulous. The light, traffic, cab are just good match for New York! Usahakan kalau kamu ke Top of the rock, pick yg night hours. Pemandangan dan gemerlap nya new york siap menyambut kamu! Last, we went to times square for late dinner afterwards. We spent like 3-4 hours just for sharing (curhat, galau, ngeluh, mengenang-ngenang dan sebangsanya) in times square, till time showed us its already 3 o’clock in the morning. Lets, Catched the subway, we got home like 4 o’clock in the morning. It was a really great first day of trip! Blah.

Kita mengawali pagi di hari minggu dengan keterlambatan, this is the effect that we don’t had enough time to sleep well. Jadilah, plan yang seharusnya di mulai jam 8 pagi ngaret ret ret. This is important thing for you guys who want to backpack or travel, set your alarm then wake up and don’t stay up late !. Brooklyn bridge, yeah these bridge is our first destination. We walked from Brooklyn side toward to Manhattan side, along the bridge we could see many tourist. Yeah, this bridge is the famous bridge in United States. If you aware in Bruno Mars songs ’somewhere in brooklyn’, and the one of clip scene is took a place in Brooklyn bridge. Lower Manhattan is the next stopped. We a lil bit sightsee in Wall street and Ground Zero (WTC Tower or 9/11). We had lunch in lower Manhattan, because the tight of time, we decide to have a simply lunch. Jadilah street vendor jadi sasaran kita. Well, rata2 harga makanan street vendor di New York bisa setara dengan harga di restaurant elite di Lousiana atau Alabama loh rumornya. Quick lunch, then we took subway to midtown NY, Cruise line star is ready for us. We had a tour around NYC (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island). 3 hours in a cruise, we felt so chilly. But for us it was a fabulous tour with a great cruise and nice tour guide, met people from around the world and absolutely see the all part of NYC. So then, here we goooo, we are so excited. This is time to dinner with special and spectacular menu (read: Indonesian Food) haha. We went to Indonesian restaurant that I usually ended up every single time when I’m in NYC !. We went to shopping district afterwards. I took them to 7,8,9 avenue in 47^th street. Yeah, if you wanna buy some souvenir in New York, the tips is don’t buy it in fancy places because its cost so much money. After shopping we ended up again in Times Square. Took a picture, shopping, and ‘silly thingy’ haha. I can’t explain what the silly thingy that we did :p. well guys, over all that is the main things that we’ve visited during our vacation in NYC. One important tips that you have to do during your visit in New York, lets make your time efficient, you just need to buy NYC PASS. Because if you have this pass you don’t have to make a line up (in fact many tourist spent their time a lot just to make a line up). NYC PASS ? What is that ? its kinda like a tickets to enter the main attraction in New York, It’s depends what kind of pass that you buy. Mine is a package with 6 destination. I got 46% more cheap and its so easy you can buy it online. Now, time to go home, lets ready to see BOSTOOOOOOOOOOOOOON !

It has been a wonderful backpacking trip even though we still used the suitcase instead a big backpack while we were traveling. Hm, sedikit concern aja kalau trip selama 2 minggu then I have to bring the huge big backpack, it will hurt me (baca : patah tulang, osteoporosis, lemah, lesu dan lunglai). However, kita tetep keukeh nyebut perjalanan kita dengan judul ‘backpacking’ (haha) because we pretend that backpack identic with ‘hostel’, ‘ground transportation and walk’, ‘less budget’ and we did. But literally, we definitely break the rules as a ‘backpacker’. Hmm, what was happened ?

Yeah! setelah sekian lama memplaningkan trip ini, dari sekitar bulan November yang lalu. Akhirnya trip ini berjalan sukses dan fantastic. Dari sekian banyak yg tertarik, akhirnya fix lah kita ber 4 untuk ambil bagian dri trip yg super cool ini. Cenna- Arkansas, Nadya- Florida, Untari- Virginia and I. Surely, my best liasion Marian accompanied us during the trip. Trip ini dimulai dari Maret tanggal 19 sampai tanggal 26.

We tried to figure out the schedule with a bunch of plans !

Oh ya, each of us has responsibility to make the details schedule and in charge on that city loh (persis kyk bagi-bagi tugas). So, I responsibility to be a tour guide in New York City, they call me ‘Mr. NYC’. Cenna is ‘Mr.Boston’, his in charge about Boston and stuff. ‘Oma Philly’ is Nadya, why we call her oma not mrs philly? Is more because she’s in charged in Philly then she made up the plan to just hang over in ‘historical-old-dark-quiet area’ of Philly (Baca: National Mall area) which means almost old people theres, so quite, everything closed by 6 pm dan mngkin krna nadya udah kena syndrome di state yg hampir semua penduduknya adalah lansia kali ya (baca Florida) ?. jdi instinct dan prefer nya begitu. Lol. Then Untari is ‘Mrs DC and Virginia’.

FYI, Cenna, Nadya and Untari sebelumnya ga tau apa2 loh dan belum pernah ke sana (baca: kota yg mreka incharge-in) tpi dgn bantuan om google and some informan finally they made up the details plan. Ini bisa jadi trik buat kamu backpackingan loh. Pertama, research apa aja yg kamu mau kunjungin bisa cek di couchsurfing, google, bing or whatever and make the decision afterwards, kamu bisa bagi2 tugas ke yg lain nya untuk ngebikin detail plans. Detail plans itu seperti jam berapa objek yg kamu mau kunjungi buka dan tutup? Naik kendaraan apa menuju kesana, naik dan turun dimana? Berapa biaya tiket masuk dan transportsi nya? Is any Restaurant or street vendor ? Hm, satu lagi usahain ngebikin route trip kamu searah. Jadi ga back and forth dan lumayan ngehemat waktu loh. So you do not waste your time to stray out, get lose, dan menghindari buat nanya2 ke orang banyak yg ujung2 nya bikin riewueh.

Crazy week

I just came home last Thursday (4 days ago). But I’ve chance to write up my stories just right now. Last weekend it was fabulous for me, I came home on March 31/ Thursday night, and I went to school on Friday (a lil bit tired but it is a good think to have one day school then weekends). Then, my birthday is on last saturday! Had a good time skype-ing with my family and friends in Indonesia. I got birthday presents from my family, we had a special dinner in New Canaan and we went to play bowling afterwards, got the first places in the 2^nd game, lucky! The next day (sunday) we went up to Greenwich, hiking a lil bit. It was nice, the sunny comes up, the weather are very great even its still windy. How I miss the perfect sunny day in Jakarta. Anyway, Thanks for your warm greetings and best wishes for me guys, welcome to my 18 world and love you!

Oh ya, Senin kemarin, waktunya gua buat ngejar2 semua guru even today (selasa), I‘ve to do make up works. It’s a ton of works that I’ve to do as soon as I can. I couldn’t believe how many assignments that I should do and has to be done on this week, (baca : crazy). Do I have to tell you what and how many assignments that I have? Would you help me out? I don’t think so, No single one like to do assignments. Haha. Oh ya, I didn’t go to ‘Nusantara Cultural night’ in Wesleyan University last week, I heard from someone that was so amazing night, and its more worth it because they provide the ‘Indonesian Traditional food’. Nasib, gua malah berjibaku dengan laundry-an dan tugas-tugas sekolah.

fyi, I’m a bit stressful about the upcoming trip, I have plan to go to midwest, (read : Minnesota, Chicago and Indiana) for my spring break, april 14-23. I already bought the airfares tickets and well schedule but somehow somethings screwed up me. I’ve to make the decision, then I cancelled my trip (-,-). Got lost the money and I’m feel so bad to my friends about this. For some reason, I have to choose and make a priority. Sedikit menyesal, I can’t see the midwest of United States. Ga sampai disitu, I just about make the new plan, want to go to boston (again). Hm, might be I will do visit college. As I said before, I leave my heart in boston and I will pick up someday! Lumayan buat mengisi waktu spring break.

Overall, this week is so crazy, I will host the AFS stay over night party this weekend and hang out in NYC, will meet Mary in New York (I’m so excited!), have to do the I-SWEEEP stuff (Research paper, the supervisor things, and travel stuff), Make up assignments (do I have to? >.<), upload some pictures and video that we took, go get find part time job, make a arrangments planing about the boston trip, try to figure out and help my friends who want to come to NY. Argh, tapi bagusnya gua masih nyempetin waktu buat share what happening this week and how this all stuff drive me so crazy! well, I’m in school right now, The bell is gonna be ring soon, (niat awal mau cerita ttg backpack malah curhat) I will tell you my backpacking stories soooooooon!

Nothing changes.

Still looked at as a stupid and immature teen

keep looking back at my life and thinking "god what an idiot I was back then". Argh, I’m hoping this thing will stops at some point because I do not want to be on my death looking back at a life of being a complete idiot.

Well, is still developing at 18, gain a slightly heightened, that continues to evolve for the next while. Though 18 is still very young. I’ve 18 things, 9 Accomplishment (1-9) and 9 Expectancy (10-18) That I thought it could be considerations for my self to more grateful and do hard work.

Huff, This week is the most excited week that i ever got since last january !!!

guess what ? hmmmm, I can't hide this one from you. I'm very honoured because I was selected to be a U.S Representative in I-SWEEEP (International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Enviroment Project) Olympiads 2011 !!! isweep 2011 website

I wanted to say thank you so much to Bunda Kori, Ka Andi, Ka Dhonny, Ka Azzam, Elsa, KIRSTAL 38, SMAN 38, Darien High School and Science Department of DHS. Of course, a bunch of thanks to my (host) mom and dad for your help and kindness and my families in here and in Indonesia!! This could not have been possible without your support, help, and prayers. I'm nothing without all of you.

In 2010, Vinska and I was selected in INESPO Amsterdam, It was the first time that we had passed for International Science Olympiad. At the same time, however, I have to follow the AFS-YES U.S Visas orientation. Finally, I decided to followed the AFS-YES Orientation and didn't go to Amsterdam. Honestly, I was very sad and dissapointed. But now, I think I've made the right decision. My dreams are coming true, I passed the Selection and will represent the United States in this International Olympiads.

My project is about Enviroment, the title is 'Electronic Plant Prototype to Absorb and Remove the Carbon Compounds using Zeolites As Stomata for Reduction of the effects of Global Warming' isweeep participants are coming from more than 70 Countries!!!

This event will be held in Houston Texas, May 4-9 2011. Last year, the participants came from 70 countries. I'm so nervous, excited, overwhelmed, happy, sad, all of thinks are mixed in my mind right now, but absolutely its great opportunity for me and hopefuly i will do my best!. Wish me luck and pray for me please )'

Finally, My trip to explore the Northeastern of America will come true. Tommorow, yeah Tommorow I will start the trip. First, Marian and I will pick up Nadya, Cenna and Untari at JFK New York Airport. Then we will do sightsee in New York, Boston (Massachusets), Philladelphia (Pennsylvania), and Washington DC. After that, Nadya and Cenna will come back to their host state but Unta and I will extends the trip to Williamsburg, (Virginia). Then I, just by my self will visit Pittsburgh (Pennsylavania) and transit in Richmod (Virginia), Aries and Hesty are ready to be my tour guide there! Its such a nice long long trip, Its about 2 weeks long (March 19-31) :P YAY !!

Ahhh, I'm so excited.... well, I still have classes today, I've clay sculpture class to finish up my shoes, Journalism class, Financial and Banking class then damn it I've test in Hummanities class. argh. Im ready thou, although I'm not prepared anything for it, i just want this friday will be end soon !!

Is love just a (second-hand) emotion? Is it a feeling? A disparate group of feelings, glandular responses, and ill-considered commitments called by a single word so that poets will have something to write about? A poor substitute for true friendship imposed upon us by lust? Or the deepest and most satisfying of human conditions?

Is everything we do out of self-love? Do we love solely out of self-love? How if we have special obligations to our loved ones, then does that interfere with our obligations towards complete strangers? How does love interact with moral theories? Most moral theories ignore love and thinks this needs to be addressed. Why should we be moved by views ?

-Perfect person doesn't exist in love. There are only people who are perfect for each other.-

   Bina Antarbudaya is a non profit and volunteer based organization which manages AFS program on education and intercultural learning in Indonesia. Its goal is build up future leaders who are more sensitive, understand, and care for the environment. Through interaction with people from other countries, we learn to share, communicate, and appreciate each other, and appreciate differences. For the future we would like to have future leaders who appreciate differences, highly recognize the value of peace and friendship, develop positive relationships and synergy with each other, with other communities and other nations to create peace and happiness to humankind.

Bina Antarbudaya is a partner of AFS Intercultural Program which is an educational and volunteer based international organization. AFS Intercultural Programs with its headquarter in New York, is an organization which runs international exchange program since 1919. It is present in more than 50 countries all over the world. Annually it has more than 13.000 participants, consist of students, youth, and teachers.Up till now, it has more than 370.000 alumni participated in various AFS programs. In Indonesia, AFS programs started in 1956 and more than 2500 Indonesian students participated in its programs till today.

Every year Bina Antarbudaya selects the best students fulfilling the requirements and more important who are seriously interested in going abroad. Anyway if you would like to participate in any of the offered programs you have to be open minded for new religions, races, tribes and socioeconomic differences in your hosting country.

General Requirements

1. You are a freshman in high school (Kelas 1 SMA) and in the age of 15-16.7

2. Besides school you gained proper educational achievements

3. You are an active member of an organization

4. Physically and mentally healthy

5. Indonesian citizen

6. At least you have the permission from parents and school for going abroad

Fulfilling the requirements above you have to pass the serial stage of selection under the authority of Bina Antarbudaya to finally become an exchange student. The Programs are :

AFS (American Field Service)

Participants in the AFS Year Program go abroad for one year. While living with a host family in a foreign country they go to school, learn about culture, lifestyle and family values. Of course, participants in this program experience a totally new way of life, learn a new language and gain intercultural skills. If you are interested in experiencing a “new world”, having an one year experience abroad, sign up for the AFS Year program!

Admission Periode: February – April 2011 for Departure in September 2012.

To Japan, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, France, Italy, Swiss and United States of America.

AFS Students 2010-2011

YES (Youth Exchange and Study)

The YES Program is a full scholarship from the US State Department to improve the understanding between American Community and majority muslim countries. The participants will be placed in a host family while going to school. They will learn more about the “American way of Life”, experiencing high school life and family values while living in the United States.

This program is more focussing on the development of strong leadership track and empathy towards the participants.

JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths)

Participants in this program will spend two fascinating weeks in Japan. Together with participants from Brunei, Cambodia, Philippines, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, China, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand you will share experiences and find out more about politics, economy, social – and cultural issues in Japan. Besides the students, each country also sends a number of teachers to Japan to take part in the interactions. Founded by ASEAN the JENESYS program ( Japan East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth – JENESYS ) is a full scholarship to form young students in terms of politics, economy, social and cultural issues. The goal of this program is to build up future leaders for the prospective world where they will take part in ruling positions all over the world.
