Last Saturday, May 11, 2013, Abreeza Ayala Mall celebrated the lifestyle of the Filipinos through Style Origin 2013. Several retail brands participated and walked the runway to present their newest collection that embodies the colors of summer.

Style Origin 2013 was hosted by sports enthusiast, Marc Nelson. While Actress, Julia Baretto, was chosen by Abreeza to grace the runway.

Nail Art: Cuddly Bear

Plain colored nails are classic and they never go out of style. However, plain nails can sometimes get boring, especially when you use the same colors, over and over again. If you want to add some spice to your nails, you can always turn to your creative side and create awesome nail art designs.

Lately, I have been practicing a bunch of nail art designs using some old nail polishes that I have in my stash. At first I was just doing simple dots and flowers using the tip of an old ballpoint pen. However, my creative side wanted to go further. I started exploring freehand nail art using some of the acrylic paints lying around my room, which by the way, has been with me since college. I was surprised that they still work just as fine. I've made a bunch of designs already, but honestly, they weren't good enough. But an artist never quits, does she? I challenged myself to create something that I can be proud of. And so five bottles of acetone, wasted nail polishes and acrylic paints, and a motherload of backache later, I finally have a decent freehand nailart.

Would you believe that it took me six attempts to come up with this design? The process of creating the bear was fairly easy, but being the OC that I am, I wanted to make sure that the bear would look cute in every angle. I almost gave up! After my (failed) 5th attempt, I told myself, unless I achieve the bear that I want, I won't get my weekly chocolate indulgence for a month. Chocolates are indeed my weakness because in less than 10 minutes, I finally had cutie bears on my accent nails.

Awkward angle is awkward. I definitely need to buy a tripod soon! =P

The biggest challenge for me was painting the bear with my non-dominant hand. Man, it was harder than algebra! I had difficulty controlling the brush because I was shaking really bad. The paint gets smeared all over the place, so I have to re-do it again and again. Good thing acrylic paints can easily be removed with water and so I didn't have to remove my nail polish base. Nonetheless, the process was really fun and therapeutic. Painting can be tiring and stressful, but ironically, doing this nail art relaxed my tensed body even despite the fact that I spent so many hours to achieve this design. In time, I know I'd be able to master painting with my non-dominant hand. All it takes is practice. And fine, maybe some sort of chocolate-y bribery.

I do a lot of artsy stuff when I'm bored and doing nail art is yet another activity that I can add to my "list of things to do on my idle moments". I know this isn't perfect yet, but I'm happy with it. And I'd say as a beginner, I think I did well.

I used Caronia Simply Red and Caronia White Satin for the bases. The bear was hand painted using my old acrylic paints and the smallest paint brush that I found in my stash.

And there you go! Expect to see more nail art designs in my future posts. But in the meantime, excuse me while I practice my non-dominant hand in painting.

Unboxing: May BDJ Box (Fun, Fresh, Fierce)

Hi, ladies! It's a busy week for me as I'm rushing on a few things before my vacation leave next week, but I just wanna do this quick unboxing blog post on the May BDJ Box. As always, I already knew what was inside before the box arrived at my doorstep. Nonetheless, I was still thrilled because, I must say, out of the three boxes I've got since March, this is probably the best (and most generous) box that I've received, so far.

This month's theme is "Fun, Fresh, Fierce"; three words that embodies the empowered women of today's generation. The box contains 15 products; 6 of which are full-sized! Man, I gotta give it to BDJ.

The box also came in a special packaging that's so colorful, perky and very artistic. I love it! Okay, no more segue. Let's get down to business.

The box contains 4 sample sizes of the famous Ralph Lauren Fragrance for Women that you can discover and play with. This is a good way to try out and experiment which scent works best for you. The miniscule sizes are also perfect for my trip next week. These are probably my favorites among the bunch because yeah, I'm a sucker for perfumes.

Aside from the sample fragrances, BDJ also included 4 Gift Cards (1,000K for each scent) that I can use to purchase at Rustan's Department Store. That's freaking 4,000 worth of GC! Now, if only I can fly to Manila.

I'll let the photo speak for itself! Five makeup products in one box? Plus, it's Maybelline. Need I say more? Hats off to BDJ on this one!
So, there you go! I'm really happy with this box as I think this is 500% more than what I paid for. I did not calculate everything but just taking into account the 4k Ralph Lauren GC plus all the others, I'm guessing this box costs more than 6K or even more! I wish I could subscribe to a June box today but I'm saving my money for something else.

"Why do you blog?"
Time and again, people outside of my blogging circle would throw this question at me. And every time I'm being asked, I always deliver a short but straightforward answer: I blog because I can.

Blogging, for me, has always been something that gives me a sense of sanity. As cheesy as it may sound, but yes, at times when I feel like things aren't going my way or that everything just seem so messed up, I turn to my blogs and I'd suddenly feel better. Whenever I start writing, I get lost in the process and for a moment, I'd forget about all the problems I have and pretend that I am living a perfect life.
As a person fueled by creativity, I couldn't imagine surviving this chaotic world without an outlet to spill out whatever emotions I have; good or bad, happy or sad. This nook is my own piece of shelter, and even when others would disagree, I still consider it my private space; a sanctuary where I can freely express myself without somebody telling me to stop talking. On top of that, I have always been fond of writing and having a blog gave me the opportunity to exercise and harness this God-given gift.
Over the years, blogging has taught me many things that later became my armor of survival in the corporate battlefield. However, despite that, I still felt like something was missing. I felt like all those years of blogging did not really amount to anything other than having a handful of 400-word essays about how good or bad my day was. Fine, about my raging hormones and all the crap that comes with it. I did not have any readers. I did not have a community. I used to be okay with that, until one day, I told myself, "Hey, I can do more than this"; that there is more to blogging than just typing those words in my mind without making any sense.

In 2010, I finally had enough drama and decided to give birth to a more sensible personal blog that is As Told By Julz. Three years later, here I am, venturing on different niches, gaining several opportunities, creating new friends, and a proud member of the Davao Bloggers Society.

Joining this group was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. I met a lot of cool people and learned a lot from them. It's so comforting to be surrounded by a group of like-minded souls where you don't need to explain yourself. I can freely sit down and take a picture of my food without getting weird and sometimes judgmental stares. How about that for liberty, huh?

Last Friday, May 3, 2013, I was formally inducted as an official member during the 2nd Davao Bloggers Society Acquaintance Party, held at Krispy Kreme, SM Lanang Premier. It was a fun night of meeting new faces, catching up with my blogger-turned-friends, endless cheers, and mind-blowing games. We also got the chance to bond with several PR companies/sponsors who's been very supportive of our group's endeavors.

A lot of people know that I did not pursue a career in my chosen field in college simply because my heart does not really belong there. Sometimes this thought haunts me, and I admit, a part of me drowns in insecurity whenever I think of it. But somehow, being part of this group made me realize that there is something I can do to prove myself worthy. Having been given the opportunity to attend events and represent the blogging community gave me a whole lot of confidence, and this truly helped boost my self-esteem. Sure, I may not have ended where I'm supposed be, but I am definitely happy standing on the place where I want to be and that's the only thing that matters.

And you know what confidence can do to a person? Well, here's me in one of the most unforgettable nights of my life. A few minutes before the program started, I was asked to lead the national anthem...on acapella, at that! I felt goosebumps all over my body because I was totally unprepared. I was hesitant at first, but surprisingly, some strong magnetic force compelled me to say yes.

To cut the story short, I sang and messed up. What can I do? An alto never sings the melody of Lupang Hinirang (only true-blue choristers know this!). LOL! I was off-key and my tune was all over the place. I guess I got too nervous. Did I mention that the event took place right in the center of the mall? In an open area where people can watch us like fishes in the aquarium? Yes, the shoppers heard my very awkward rendition of the national anthem, but you know what? It was an amazing experience. Well for sure, I was embarrassed because I totally murdered the country's anthem, but what I'm saying is, I was proud of myself. I was brave enough to stand up there and belt out those high notes. YOLO, anyone? But really, it was an experience I'll never forget. One day when I look back and think about it, I will surely laugh hard. =p

There are tons of blogging organizations in the country, but I believe what sets the Davao Bloggers Society apart from any other blogging groups is that, we're one, big, happy family. We have different niches, we blog about different things, we all have our own stories to tell, but we're all one and the same. We're solid like that! Of course, this group would not be as organized as it is without a governing body leading the group. Our set of officers has done a wonderful thing in making DBS as one of the most dynamic blogging organizations in the country. During the program, we had a trip down the memory lane on the past events that the group has been to, and mind you, these are not just PR events. Read: Outreach Programs, Seminars and Workshops, and Blogger Meet-ups among others.

I'm thankful to have been part of this awesome group. If given the chance to go back in time, I would still choose to join DBS. Carrying the name of the group on my shoulders is both a challenge and a blessing, but really, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'd like to believe we're not just stereotype bloggers. We're the new age media. We're digital influencers creating a huge impact in this so-called blogging world.

On the Spotlight: Carmex Lip Balm

I have quite a lot lip balms in my stash. I have them lying around everywhere; in my bags, on my desk, and even inside my closet. It's been a habit of mine to apply lip balm almost every hour. One of my favorite lip balm brand is Carmex as it used to be my go-to brand back in college. I can no longer recall how many sticks I've downed before I stopped using it; not because I didn't like it anymore, but because I tried exploring other brands. But still, even after discovering other amazing lip balms, I still find myself going back to this brand, especially when my lips are in dire need of help. Needless to say, Carmex has been and will always be a staple in my stash.

These are the current residents in my makeup kit. As you can see, the mint click stick has been overly abused already, it's gonna sue me for sexual harassment. The tube one was part and parcel of my winnings from Martha of The Beauty Junkee last year. These two badly need replacement already since both are almost nearing the end of the line. Luckily, Carmex Philippines (Thank you! ^_^) sent me a few samples to try.

Carmex Says: Carmex Moisture Plus is a premium lip balm that offers intense moisturizing benefits from vitamin E, aloe, shea butter and avocado butter. It protects lips from the sun with SPF 15 sunscreen, has a satin gloss finish, and looks great by itself or under or over lipstick.

WHAT I LIKE:

- Impressive moisturizing power
- Classy packaging. You can very well recognize the brand even from afar.
- Affordable (price range is around 99php - 109php depending on the variant)
- Not tested on animals. Hurrah!!
- Some variants (click stick) contains SPF15
- Has a cooling effect responsible for relieving dry and chapped lips. This cooling sensation is also addicting! *winks*
- Manufacturing date is printed on the packaging

WHAT I DON'T LIKE:

- Not easily available in leading department stores
- The scent might be a turn off for some. It smells and even feels waxy.
- Not a fan of the jar packaging (unhygienic)

Let's take a closer look on each product

CARMEX JAR

Carmex Classic Jar | 99.75 php

Trivia: Did you know that Carmex has been around since 1937? It was invented by Alfred Woelbing on the family stovetop. For the next 20 years, Alfred and his wife made the balm by hand and poured into tiny jars like this one.

Carmex Jar was the first variant that came out of the market. I'm not quite a fan of the packaging of this as I find it unhygienic to dip your fingers in it every time. It's best to sanitize your hands first before using it. I do not recommend this for sharing. I do like using this as a lip stain topper because it provides a subtle amount of shine that gives my lips a fuller look.

CARMEX CLICK STICK

Carmex Strawberry Click Stick | 99.75 php

Stick balms have always been my preferred type because they're handy and they don't melt easily; Carmex Click Stick is not an exception. This particular variant contains botanical wax with a higher melting temperature, thus keeping the product from melting when you carry them in your pocket or inside your bag while traveling The best thing about this variant is that, it contains SPF15, making it perfect for summer. However, I did notice that compared to the other two variants, this one does not have enough moisturizing power. It could be because of the SPF content. Nonetheless, it still leaves my lips plump and supple. By the way, I like the "clicking" sound it creates when you twist and dispense the product out of the stick. Addicting! Hah!

CARMEX TUBE

Carmex Classic Tube | 109php

My most favorite variant from Carmex is the tube type because it has a softer consistency compared to the click stick and the jar type, which makes it more comfortable to wear on the lips. This is due to the added mineral oils (which the other variants don't have) that keeps the product soft enough to squeeze out from the tube. That said, this variant is packed with more moisturizing properties. It's also the most hygienic out of the bunch and you can definitely share this with your friends (although I do believe that lip balms are like undergarments, you should not share them as they're very "personal"). Anyway, aside from moisturizing and relieving chapped lips, I also found out that it relieves rashes.

Case in point: Two weeks ago, I was having rashes on my neck due to the extreme heat. I thought of applying petroleum jelly to relieve the itchiness, but then I realized it might not provide enough comfort. I was looking for other alternatives when I saw this lying on top of my desk. I read the ingredients and saw that it contains petrolatum, not to mention menthol and salicylic acid. I was sold! I then applied it on my rashes and a few hours later, the itchiness mellowed down. I kept applying it every hour and the next day, the rashes were gone. Sorcery!
VERDICT:

I love this product, if that's not obvious enough! It keeps my lips moisturized despite the crazy, hot weather. It's affordable and it works. I've been using this (and only this) brand for the past two weeks and my lips have become really plump and supple.
TO WHOM DO I RECOMMEND?

To everyone! Seriously, this is one product you shouldn't miss.

On the Spotlight: Avon Ideal Oil Control Pressed Powder in Oriental (My HG Face Powder!)

Hi, ladies! It's a beautiful Monday. The weather's quite tolerable today, which puts me in a good mood to be productive. Speaking of beautiful, I'd like to talk about a product that's been doing a really beautiful thing to my life : Avon Ideal Oil Control Face Powder.

I accidentally discovered this powder last year when my sister started to become an Avon dealer. It was actually just a free product that came along with my Avon Ultra Moisture Rich lipstick purchase. I see what destiny did here. *winks*

I got the shade Oriental, which turned out to be a perfect match for my morena skin (a friend of mine said I'm a MAC C40. I cannot vouch though because I have not used any MAC powder/foundation yet. I searched for swatches though, and I believe I may be fit for this shade). Oriental is a warm beige with strong yellow undertone, perfect for Pinay (Filipina) skin.This shade disappears on my skin, while giving me a polished, more even-toned complexion.
WHAT I LIKE
- Affordable at 299php (regular price) - Has SPF 17 - Sheer coverage. It doesn't look cake-y no matter how much you layer the product on. (Take note: this is just pressed powder so it won't really give you full coverage). - Conceals minor skin imperfections - Lessens the appearance of pores - My skin looks better; velvety smooth - Controls oil up to 6 hrs (air-conditioned room), 3-4 hrs (non-AC, well-ventilated room). - Feels light on the skin - No breakouts! - Packaging is quite tacky, but I like how it looks more mature than most Avon makeup packaging.

WHAT I DON"T LIKE
- I start to oil up after 2 hours when I'm out under the scorching heat of the sun. - Contains talc and silica. If you're allergic to silicon, you might want to stay away from this product. - Does not cover dark, post-acne scars. But it doesn't matter. That's the job of concealers anyway. - Not finely milled. It's rather chalky, although the residues does not really scatter all over the place. - Available only through Avon dealers

VERDICT
I would go as far as saying that this is now my HG face powder. I love it. It makes my skin look better even if I don't apply foundation/bb cream underneath. I'd say this is My Skin But Better.
TO WHOM DO I RECOMMEND
To women who are looking for a lightweight face powder everyday use.

WILL I REPURCHASE?
Yes! Although there are quite a few things that I don't like about this product, I will still repurchase because I love what it does to my overall complexion.
My sister temporarily stopped dealing Avon products for a few months because she got busy with her work. I was bummed because I didn't know what to use as an alternative for this. I tried NYX and Maybelline, but I wasn't satisfied. Good thing my sister decided to tune up and get back to business. And I was in luck because Avon Ideal Oil Control Face Powder was on sale when she handed me April Avon brochure. I immediately bought two pans.

I'm currently using the one on the right, hence the stain on the foam. The one of the left is my back-up. =)

On the Spotlight: Etude House Help My Finger Matte Top Coat

If you've been following me on Instagram (go follow if you haven't already : astoldbyjulz), you know that I've been doing some nail art projects; though I don't really post everything, just those that I think are decent enough to be posted. Now, as much as I want to experiment more often, there's one thing that really puts me off: my top coat gives me headache! You know that feeling when you've achieved a flawless nail polish application (no bubbles, ridges, or streaks) only to be ruined by a crappy top coat? It annoys me because I'm OC like that. The other day, I paid Etude House a visit and spotted this very interesting top coat.

It claims to hide ridges and imperfections, while transforming your glossy nails into an even, matte finish. Sounds like magic potion to me. I grabbed one from the rack and immediately tried it on when I got home.

As you can see on the first photo above, it appears milky in the bottle but it's transparent once applied on the nails. The formula is quite runny but very manageable. You can never go wrong with this because it's self-leveling, which means, it spreads evenly on your nails. This helps in hiding and eliminating any imperfection.

Please excuse the cuticles. I'm aware that it's ugly and not a pretty sight. I'll do better next time.

To prove the effectiveness of this top coat, I used a glossy nail polish on my accent nail. The nail polish I used on the rest of my fingernails has a semi-matte finish, but I intended to add ridges on the nail of my middle finger to see if it really hides imperfections. And boy, I thought I witnessed a miracle...on my nails. Excited to see the transformation?

Let me share my thoughts first:

LIKE:
- The brush has the right size (not too thin, not too wide) for my short nails - The bristle is soft enough to facilitate easy application - True its claim, it dries in less than 5 minutes! - Hides all those nasty imperfections such as streaks, ridges and the most dreaded, bubbles! - Yields to a smooth, velvety-matte finish - The scent is not as strong compared to other chemically-scented chemicals - Does not contain the BIG 3 scary ingredients (Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Pthalate, and Toluene)

DISLIKE: - Expensive at 228php (not sure, but it's 200+), at least for me. I normally would not spend that much for a nail polish

Here's a closer look. Notice the nail of my middle finger? The ridges are gone! My accent nail looks more even and a lot prettier than the glossy one, yes?
VERDICT:

I'm in love with this product simply because it gives me pseudo-professional looking nails. I also like the fact that it turns any glossy polish into a beautiful, velvety-matte finish. This saves you from buying several nail polishes with matte finishes (if matte polishes are your thing).
TO WHOM DO I RECOMMEND?
To nail art/nail polish beginners who want flawless looking nail job. And to those who are into matte nail polishes.

Nail Tutorial: Glam Up Your Nails with Nail Art Stickers in Three Easy Steps

I've always been a fan of nail art as I think it's a brilliant form of art that allows you to unleash your creativity beyond boundaries. It's also a good way to add a good doze of oomph to a rather boring wardrobe. But let's admit it, nail art is quite challenging especially if you're someone who has limited artistic skills. Well fret not, as nail art stickers are here to the rescue. Today, I will show you how to glam up your nails with nail art stickers in as easy as 1-2-3.

To make this work, you only need two things: nail art sticker and nail file. Here I'm using a set of Loreal 3D Nail Art Sticker, which I got from my March BDJ box. Before applying the sticker, make sure your nails are groomed and dry. That said, please excuse my nails because I'm pretty bad at doing my own manicure.

Now let's begin:

1. Choose a size that fits perfectly on your nail and carefully place the flat end of the sticker near the cuticle.
2. Give it a good stretch to avoid creasing and gently pull and fold the sticker to the natural curve of your nails. Using the thumb of your other hand, flatten the sticker to ensure that it sticks well on your nail plate.
3. Using a nail file, gently file your nail like you normally do to cut the excess sticker. Just like so.

Do the rest of your nails......aaaand you're done (in 5 minutes. seriously)!

MY THOUGHTS
Nail Art Stickers are great to use if you want to spice up your nails without going through the hassle of traditional nail art painting, or if you're in a rush to get your nails done. I also like that they're comfortable to wear; they're not heavy on the nails. Plus, it makes me happy whenever I look at the bling. Cue: Shine bright like a diamond.
The downside, however, is that nail stickers tend to come off easily. I'm not sure if there are complimentary products that can help the stickers adhere to the nails better, not that I know of. A top coat might help, but I cannot vouch. Another is, they're a bit pricey (Loreal is sold at 350php for 18 stickers). I'm not quite sure what other brands offer nail art stickers. I know Etude House have them at a cheaper price though (178php if I remember it right), but nothing more than I can think of.

Dry skin alert! LOL!

In conclusion, I like how this is so easy to apply; no-brainer if that makes you happy. However, I'm not quite pleased with the price. How about you? Have you tried using nail art stickers?

Unboxing: April BDJ Box (Oh So Fresh!)

I received my box this afternoon, but before it even arrived at my doorstep, I already know what's inside. Oh the downside of living here in the South. Or yes, blame the genius that is Instagram. Half kidding! Anyway, even though my excitement was spoiled, I was still happy to receive the box right in the middle of a humid, almost feverish day.

The last two BDJ Boxes came with a special theme, in a customized packaging (Shishiedo and Loreal), so I was expecting another special box courtesy of who-knows-what-awesome brand. But then the April box came in its usual black and pink box with lemon green prints, nothing fancy really. Still, the box is filled with an awesome loot of goodies. Behold!

The theme of this month's box is "Oh, So Fresh!" which I find unbefitting because as you can see, not everything in this box gives you that feeling of freshness save for the Celeteque hydration mist and perhaps the Garnier mask and the sample sized perfume. Nonetheless, these goodies could still be the perfect arsenal for summer. Let's take a closer look.

Avon Skin So Soft Glutathione Lotion with Marula (full size - 350php). I'm not so much of a lotion person because it makes me feel sticky all over. I immediately gave this to my mom who's a huge believer of Avon Lotions.

Celeteque Hydrolized Moisturizing Mist (full-size 349php). I'm interested in this one because I have been wanting to try this type of product for a long time now. Me thinks this is the ultimate weapon to keep your face fresh all day.

Bifesta Age Care Cleansing Lotion (sample size). This is also another product that I have been meaning to try but couldn't really buy it because it's too pricey for me. Makeup removers are a huge part of my nightly skincare regimen. Even if I'm super tired already, I always see to it that I remove my makeup before cleansing-toning-moisturizing my face. I heard a lot of good things about this product, so I'm really excited how it would fair on me.

Trinkets for the nails! Revlon Nail Art Expressionist (375php) and Candi Nail Polish Remover Wipes (65php). This reminds me that I need to practice doing nail art again. Love the color that I got. So perky and perfect for summer!

Avon Anew 360 White Day Cream (full-size 799php) + Samples. I have tried using the serum in this line before and I love how it helped in lightening my post-acne scars and lessening the appearance of my pores. It didn't give me any skin irritation or breakout. I'm hoping the day cream will also give me good results. I'll road test this one once I run out of my current day cream from Olay.

Garnier Light Intensive 3 in 1 Whitening Essence Mask (89php/each). I'm apprehensive about trying this one because the last product I used from Garnier gave me two happy zits beaming on my forehead.
Goody Slide proof Pins and Elastics (44.75php). I don't really understand why this brand is so expensive. I mean, what could be so special about a pair of pins and elastics anyway? This I have to find out.

Selena Gomez Eau de Parfum (sample size). Smells fruity, which is perfect for summer. It smells good, but nothing that could wow you.
Vouchers. Perhaps the only thing I could use here is the Bioessence Premium Pass. I always love having my facials done at Bioessence because the place is so nice and very relaxing. I'm excited to try the Aroma Facial.
Although there were some products that I'm not too keen about, I'm still happy with the overall content of the April BDJ box. Good job BDJ! =)

On the Spotlight: MAC Watch Me Simmer Amplified Lipstick

Today' I'm going to review my first ever MAC lipstick. I've been wanting to get my hands on one for the longest time, but I find online shopping too expensive for my life; what with all the shipping fee and the inconvenience of not being able to swatch the product before purchasing it. Good thing Noeh Jani, a Davao-based makeup artist (I had the priviledge to sit down in a makeup workshop conducted by him and Ryan Wong several months ago) opened his very own online shop called The Vanity Affair. He caters high-end products such as MAC, Sephora, and Ben Nye among others. Thumbs up for no shipping fee! =)

MAC Watch Me Simmer (P950)

Since the shop is new, there were only a few shades to choose from. But worry not, as the shop will be opening a pre-order soon. I bought the MAC Watch Me Simmer Amplified Lipstick, which is a Limited Edition shade from the Cook MAC, Shop MAC collection.

Watch Me Simmer is described as a bright coral shade with a pink undertone. I am inlove with the color and I find it perfect for summer. It's a fun and happy color that makes you look young and feel young. I have been using it on heavy rotation these days. Here's what I think:

WHAT I LIKE
- Highly pigmented. One swipe is all it takes to get a nice, coral pink lips. - Long-wearing. It comes off when you eat, but leaves an even stain that looks really gorgeous. - Moisturizing, although, those with extremely dry lips would need proper lip preparation (you know the drill, ladies) - This particular shade instantly brightens my face and it gives me that extra oomph on lazy days.
WHAT I DON'T LIKE

- Limited edition. It might not be always available in MAC Counters and Online Stores. - The shade has a tendency to look neon when applied heavily. Unless you're going for a really bright looking lips, you might want to use a light hand.
VERDICT

Since this is the first MAC lipstick that I have ever owned, I cannot do a comparison with regards to the finishes, but let me just say that I am loving the amplified finish of this. It borders between satin and matte; something that I highly prefer. Watch Me Simmer is such a lovely shade and although I sometimes find it awkward for my skintone, I still think it looks good on me. Such a great find, this one.

Whenever I pray for something that I want, I don't ask God to give it to me just because I want it. I ask him to give it only if He thinks I need it. I do have a lot of intentions everyday, but not all of them are granted because I believe, He has better plans for me. And sure He does.

Unboxing: March Summer Glam BDJ Box

Hi ladies, how's your Monday so far? Mine's pretty wrecked. I had a series of misfortunes through out the day, which got me really cranky. It's probably my hormones. But anyway, I ended my day with a cup of sinful coffee indulgence. It was against my will since I don't drink coffee anymore. Good thing the coffee tasted really great that I totally forgot about my bad day. Time to move on.
Anyway, today I want to show you my first-ever BDJ box. I know, I'm four months late from the hype, but I intentionally deferred my subscription in order to see which beauty box is worth trying. After reading reviews after reviews, I'm convinced that BDJ reigns supreme as the best beauty box there is. I subscribed to the March BDJ box hoping that I'd get a good loot and boy did I get more than what I paid for.

My first-ever BDJ box came in an elegant black box with a gorgeous-looking gold Eiffel Tower on it, and that's not even the best part. I actually got myself a box filled with L'Oréal goodies tailored for summer. Talk about perfect timing, huh? Take a peek on what's inside:

I love everything in this box as I find all of them useful for summer; I'm actually saving the sample sizes for my upcoming summer trip this May. My favorite among the bunch is the UV Perfect Longlasting UV Protector as it's pretty lightweight and non-sticky for a sunscreen. I already tried using it and so far, my skin is loving it. This isn't the first Loreal skincare product that I've used so I wasn't hesitant to gamble on it. Meanwhile, I'm also digging the Shine Caresse. I'm not exactly a lip-gloss person, but I like how this does not leave an oily film on my lips. In fact, it actually leaves a gorgeous stain when the product has dried out. Not a lot of lip glosses can do that. I also love the color that I got. It's a coral red shade that goes on sheer, giving my lips a natural, just-bitten look. Love it!
Anyway, I'm really happy with this box. In fact, I was so happy that I subscribed to the April BDJ box immediately after my unboxing. I'm excited! =)

Mixed Perspectives

Last night, I had a hearty dinner with a former colleague and his lovely wife at Trellis and Vines. We haven't seen each other for quite a while and it was good to finally catch up with each other, especially now that he's already married. I was also with Quimz, my partner in crime, and yes, also my former colleague in two different companies. Anyway, it started as a fun dinner over Baby Back Ribs that later turned into mature conversation over Chicken Biryani. It was so refreshing to hear the exchange of stories that we've never ever talked about back when we were still colleagues. Somewhere in the middle of business ventures, network marketing, butcherology (Hi baby gurl!), and marriage, it hits me; I'm 26 and I feel like I haven't done enough to truly fulfill my purpose in life.

I know I'm still young, but I'd say I'm quite older than most people my age in terms of my approach in life. I matured early because the situation called for it. At the age of 21, I was already in charge of supporting my sister's college education. I had dedicated myself to fund her college fees and helping out in our family's finances. After 4 years, I had achieved one of the biggest successes in my life; when my sister climbed up on stage to receive her diploma. I was such a proud ate and with tears pooling my eyes, I gave myself a tap on the back for a job well done.

When she graduated, Yuan told me it was about time that I did something for myself. I actually wanted to go back to school and study Creative Writing or Graphic Designing. But then, it was rather easier said than done. No matter how much I debate with myself that it is for my own good, my willingness to extend my help to my family prevails. It's not really that easy to chase your own dreams when your family depends on you. I am not complaining though. Keeping my family's quality of life has always been my priority and it makes me happy.

To compromise my suppressed dreams, I started to become more active in blogging; "active" being the operative word. I signed-up and officially jumped into the bandwagon of awesome bloggers here in the city. Hanging out with these people and attending events with them gave me an adrenaline rush that somehow helps me ease up the stresses I get from the kind of job I have. It was good while it lasted, but lately, I find myself passing up interesting blogging opportunities that come my way. Don't get me wrong, blogging is fun. It's just that, lately, I find that my life is becoming more and more public. Sounds ironic, right? What with all my social media hullaboohs and blogs with an "S" for crying out loud. I'm starting to think I'm on my way to celebrity stardom. KIDDING. But yeah, sometimes I feel like I'm losing the purpose of why I started blogging in the first place. I didn't create this blog because I'm a great product endorser. But rather, I created this because I'm a great story-teller (slash ranter). I'm on a semi-hiatus right now, as far as being an official Davao Blogger is concerned.

Another thing that's keeping me busy right now is this Concrete Dream that Yuan and I are trying really hard to work out. We're slowly building the interiors of our house and I so cannot wait for the final outcome. Now that we're on this topic, let me just say that we're both starting to feel the pressure, in as far as getting married is concerned. Yuan's relatives, especially his mom, have been telling us that it's about time we both take our relationship to the next level. We sometimes just laugh about it, but we know they are serious with their intent. We've acknowledged the idea though, so we'll see.

Anyway, I don't know where this post is heading to. I just feel like writing and ranting and just pouring my heart out with whatever emotion is in here. I do have my moments like this and I hope it doesn't creep you out. I don't know what to say anymore so......

A Freelancer's Story

It's been a year and half since I turned my back from the corporate world and traveled the road of freelancing. I could still vividly remember my mom's unhinged reaction when she learned about my resignation. She worried about our survival since I have my financial responsibilities within our family. I had to prove to her everyday that there is no peril in freelancing, and this I had to validate for myself as well. The truth is, I was half-hearted when I sealed the deal.
As soon as I stepped out of the building on my last day of office work, I asked myself whether or not I could endure working at home. I thought about all the distractions that might come upon me (and indeed they have) and how they could make or break me. The first few months wasn't easy. It was a struggle and I had to convince myself everyday that someday, it is going to be worth it. Proving yourself as a professional with your pajamas on is like justifying how good a Durian fruit is; hard to believe, but it is possible. I decided to set aside my doubts, because I know it is for the better. I eventually learned how to adjust. My life was never the same since then.

Freelancing gave me the freedom to do many things that I couldn't have done in the office setting. For instance, having the luxury of time flexibility, which allowed me to tailor my time schedule whenever I have events or errands to attend to without worrying about my boss' wrath. On that note, this flexibility allowed me to engage into more social activities. I may appear like anti-social sometimes, but believe me, I am not designed to be secluded from the real world. Staying at home everyday drives me insane. At times when I feel like I'm getting cranky, I go to a coffee shop for a change of scenery, walk around the mall to loosen up my nerves, prettify myself so that I'd feel good. Also, I have immersed myself to several blogging and media events, which truly added a whole lot of fun in my social life.
Financial stability is out of the question when it comes to freelancing. Most freelancers earn more than those who are tied in an office cubicle. I could very well say the same for myself. Sure, I have quite a few tasks on my plate. But hey? What's another 4 hours on top of my 8-hour job for a salary that can buy me luxury in just a month's worth of work? That's quite a feat, if you ask me.
Now don't get me wrong though. Money isn't everything in freelancing. While getting all the clients (and the moolah) you can get is quite tempting, it can sometimes be dangerous. To be an effective freelancer is to be able to work on limited tasks where you can excel, rather than creating sloppy work because you're in a rush to accommodate your overwhelming tasks from different clients. There is no excuse for substandard work, and that applies to any kind of work setting. I'm lucky that I have two generous clients who believe in what I can do by giving me the opportunity to learn more, grow more, and earn more. And yes, I'm well and good with this.
To be self-employed is not easy as it demands a strong sense of independence, self-discipline, and a whole lot of determination. Even if you work at the comforts of your own home, consider yourself a soldier in the battlefield. Without a strategy, you'll die spot on. Know your guns and bullets, fire them if need be. Watch your enemies and don't let them paralyze you. At the same time, give yourself the freedom to enjoy. Play games, indulge on good food, read a book, watch a movie, watch the sky, marry your bed, do all the other lazy things you can think of. Just like in a real office setting, balance is the key.
Freelancing is a beautiful world, but it is not for everyone.

My mom used to be a big fan of Camay years ago, but I couldn't care any less about the hype of it being one of the most fragrant bar soaps that ever existed. I was a meager 5th grader at that time. All I cared about was Science and Chinese Garter. Thank goodness the brand came back into the limelight and now I understand why mom loves these soaps.

Camay comes in both bar soap and shower gel, and are available in three different scents; Dynamique Grapefruit, Creme Vanilla, and Romantique Rose. I decided to try the shower gel in Romantique Rose . Oh boy, it's romance in a bottle! Find out why!

WHAT I LIKE

- Cheap at 69php for a 100ml bottle. - Has a runny consistency that lathers up quickly - Romantique Rose has soft floral notes that smell absolutely great - Easy press bottle cap makes it more convenient to use

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
- I wish the bottle was transparent so that I could see how much product is left - Only available in three scents! I wish the brand comes up with more

VERDICT

I treat shower gels as my reward after being stressed with just about anything. I don't use it everyday and when I do, I only use it sparingly. The first time I used camay, I instantly fell inlove with it. Romantique Rose has a sophisticated scent inspired by a classic Rose de Bagatelle (French Wild Rose). The scent is sometimes one of the reasons why I stay longer in the shower than I normally should. That's quite something, if you ask me. Camay says I'll have tempting skin after I use it, and well, I can vouch for that! *winks*

My Love for The Philippine Madrigal Singers

Call me old school, but I still prefer classical music over contemporary, not even at the height of Adele. Now don't get me wrong. I do enjoy listening to these new breed of awesome singers, but nothing really ever gets me more than the soothing tune of the piano keys or the angelic voices of some of the best chorale groups I know. And if you'd ask me who's my favorite chorale group? It's no less than our country's pride, The Philippine Madrigal Singers.
I can still remember how I felt when I first saw and heard them perform live, roughly seven years ago, when they had their Madzitawan Concert Tour at the CAP Auditorium (God, I forgot where I placed my gatepass, which I so carefully kept all these years!). I felt like crying the entire time, even though the concert was supposed to be fun and light. It was surreal hearing them live, that I had to battle some hard convincing with my own self. Truly, it was one of the best nights of my life.
As a chorister myself, I look up to them like a student who listens attentively to her teacher. Everytime I put them on my playlist, I seem to drift away from reality and snuggle up in a place where everything is peaceful and heavenly. They have inspired me to become a better chorister. I'm not an awesome soloist, but let me knead the harmony in the background and we'll surely create beautiful music. Although I have long rested from choral singing, my love for MADZ never faltered. I still listen to them whenever I feel uninspired or whenever I just want to have some peace and solidarity. If you haven't listened to their songs yet, you are missing half of your life!
Here's one of my most favorite renditions by MADZ. Kruhay is a folk song from Panay, which means "Mabuhay!". It's a pretty tough song (one of the toughest musical scores I have ever learned to sing) and no one does it better than the Philippine Madrigal Singers! See for yourself!

OOTD: Business Casual

Here's one of those rare occasions where the girl in flip-flops turns the wheel around, walks in a 5-inch heels, and does some lookbook thing. This is what I wore last night at the Globe GoSakto Launch held at the Ballroom of Marco Polo Hotel, Davao. The guests were asked to wear Business Casual, and I figured, this was the perfect time to flaunt my new patent black pumps.

As always, I only had two hours grace period before the event due to work. The event venue was roughly around 45 mins from where I live, so that leaves me with a little over an hour to prepare. With that in mind, I just grabbed the first clothes I found in my closet that can pass up for a business casual ensemble. I veered away from a dark-colored dress because that would've been too formal for a semi-casual occasion. Thank goodness that I have this barbie pink dress in my closet. It's my favorite one of all the dresses that I have as I find it really flattering. It somehow hides my bulges, which then gives the illusion of a curvier body. Plus, the cut exudes a classical and feminine look. Even though it's pretty plain, there really is no need to accessorize it. I simply threw in some pearls and a black blazer and I was good to go. These black patent pumps are gorgeous, but I'm not gonna lie, I had to change into my ever trusty flip flops after the event. Nonetheless, I love how it made my legs look sexier and slimmer. I'm a woman now. What do you think of my outfit? Yay or Nyay?

Concrete Dream: One Goal Off the List

My boyfriend and I have been together for more than six years now, and as per natural order of the universe, it's just but normal to think about what lies ahead of us a.k.a getting married and build a happy home. It's amazing how our awkward cheesy moments over barbecue turned into adult talks over pizza. Moving forward is a good thing.
Speaking of moving forward, we have been very serious about preparing things for what will soon be our "married life" since the beginning of last year. One of those things is acquiring a house through a housing loan. We often talk about it, but we've never really went to an agent to get things done. But one fateful day in September of last year, Yuan called me to say that he just spoke with an agent at Deca Homes. The next thing I knew, we were already saving money to pay for the home equity and house reservation. And just two weeks ago (or was it three?) we finally got hold of the keys to our now concrete dream!

This is the only picture I can show you because there really is nothing much to show. It's still empty, but nonetheless, I could feel the warmth circulating in every corner of our soon-to-be-home. I'm excited to shop for house furniture and all other things to prettify this humble abode. No more vanity shopping for me!

I have made a lot of sacrifices for this. I compromise every time I feel the urge to buy the other things that I wanted to have for myself; things that are rather egoistic and materialistic. But at the end of the day, before I go to sleep, there surely is nothing I want more than to bring our dream into concrete reality. And now, it's finally here. I may have had a few wrong turns and made bad decision in the past, but here I am now, holding on to something that I can truly be proud of. That's one goal off the list, and a dozen more to follow! =)

Godiva Natural Skincare: For White Skin that Lasts

I used to spot Godiva products at Watsons and SM Beauty section. I see them lined up neatly on the racks in varying colors, and I remember them having an extensive range of products for different skin concerns. I know a lot of people who swear by their facial creams and deodorant, so I was surprised when I learned that they were discontinued a few years back.

I attended the Media Launch on the second day of the beauty journey, where I got to know more about the different products under the Godiva LicoWhite skincare line.
The New Godiva Natural Skincare
Godiva Natural Skincare range contains licorice, a plant commonly used as a sweetening agent. It is also thought to effectively and safely whiten the skin, while its roots are known to have several medicinal properties.
Licorice root extract contains an active ingredient called "glabridin", a potent, naturally-derived ingredient known around the world for its whitening properties. On the Spotlight: Human Heart Nature Smoothing Hair Serum

It's been a while since I last wrote a product review, but let's not talk about backlogs, okay? Anyway, I received this bottle of hair wonder November of last year when I attended Human Heart Nature's Magalogue Turnover. I haven't been using this as much for the simple fact that I am working at home and I don't really go out of the house that often, hence I didn't have a reason to use this on a daily basis. To be honest though, I'm not big on hair serums or any other leave-on hair products. I hate the sticky and hot feeling they leave on my scalp, especially when the weather is too humid. I'm quite lucky that my hair doesn't really require much of them in order to be tamed. There are, however, a few instances when I have to look prim and polished for a certain event; hair included. Thank goodness I have this hair wonder in my stash.

Human Heart Nature Smoothing Serums is an all-natural hair serum that contains sunflower, soybean and broccoli oil which nourishes and hydrates the hair, making it shinier and healthier from inside out. So far, I am satisfied with the what this serum does to my hair. Find out why.
WHAT I LIKE:

Cheap at 249php
Organic! Need I say more?
Has a runny, non-greasy consistency. It does not leave a sticky feel
Easy to spread and a little goes a long way
Comes with a pump so it's easy to dispense and control the product that you're getting
Keeps my hair shiny, healthy, and moisturized without looking wet (granting you don't put a lot)
No breakouts
Has a faint fruity scent which I actually like

WHAT I DON'T LIKE

Not easily available in department stores

VERDICT

I cannot really vouch on how effective it is in detanggling and defrizzing hair strands because my hair does not suffer from that. But I like how it keeps my hair tamed and shiny without having that "wet-look" appearance. My hair can still bounce and sway through the air when the wind blows. (I'm a sucker for that. Booyah!)

TO WHOM DO I RECOMMEND?

To anyone who is looking for a non-sticky serum that's cheap but works pretty well.

Fresh Fragrance Bar: Of Perfume Addiction and Silver Linings

I just watched The Silver Linings Playbook last night and I absolutely loved it. It's the kind of film that would make you fall in love in the most bizarre sense of the phrase. The romance is not cheeseballs, not mediocre, not predictable. Jennifer Lawrence is such a punk and I love her for that. And don't even get me started with Bradley Cooper. Anyway, the story basically reminds us that there is always something good in everything, in everyone. Every cloud has a silver lining. You just got to believe that.
Speaking of silver lining, did you know that I consider perfumes as one of my life's little silver linings? I don't have an extensive collection of perfumes, but I pretty much own more than an average person should have. I do have different scents for different occasions, and heck, I even have one that I spritz on before I sleep. Too vain, I know. But what can I say? I feel good when I smell good, and when I smell good, I see the good in everything, and when I see the good in everything, the world easily becomes a happy place to live in despite all the chaos that comes with it. It's amazing how a single, inanimate object can make you feel so alive.
On a more personal note, I can never leave the house without spritzing perfume on. I mean, looking prim and proper is one thing, but it's also another thing to smell good. Like a cherry on top of a sundae, perfumes are considered the fine details that completes your entire look. They're invisible, but they give you an added glitz and glamour. Fine, they also give you some bragging rights, too. Especially if you're using that fragrance named after your favorite Hollywood celebrity. Sometimes, whenever I feel like I don't look my best, I simply spray on my favorite perfume and I tell myself that "Hey! at least I smell good". And yup, there goes my silver lining.
Now, to consider perfumes as one of your life's necessities is a tough feat, mostly because some of the best fragrances out there cost more than a complete wardrobe. Enter FReSH Fragance Bar.
