It would be a surprise if one said that Allah’s Noble Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam , the most merciful amongst the creation, the owner of the loftiest character would get angry and curse someone. It is true that the master of mankind never took revenge for his own sake, never even got angry for personal reasons. But when the matter was one of breaching the divine law, he never let it pass – he used to get angry, and sometimes even invoked Allah’s curse on Allah’s enemies.

On the day of Al-Khandaq (the battle of the Trench), the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam said, “They (i.e. pagans prevented us from offering the middle Prayer till the sun had set. May Allah fill their graves, their houses (or their bodies) with fire.” Bukhari Shareef, Muslim Shareef

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam used to recite the following invocations during Qunut: “O Allah! Save Salama bin Hisham. O Allah! Save Al-Walid bin Al-Walid. O Allah! Save `Aiyash bin Rabi`a O Allah ! Save the weak Muslims. O Allah! Be very hard on Mudar tribe. O Allah! Afflict them with years (of famine) similar to the (famine) years of the time of Prophet Joseph.” Bukhari Shareef

When Utaiba, son of Abu Lahab got separated from Kulsoom the daughter of the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam , he came to him and said, “I have rejected your religion, and divorced your daughter. Neither should you have any liking for me, nor do I have any love for you”. Upon this, the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam prayed, “O Allah! Set a dog amongst your dogs upon him (Utaiba bin Abu Lahab).” Tibrani in Kabeer (Utaiba was later sent by his father Abu Lahab, on a mission to Syria. Whilst he slept in a field, surrounded by camels and comrades to protect him from wild animals, a lion sought him out from others and tore him apart.)

While Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam was praying beside the Ka`ba, there were some Quraish sitting in a gathering. One of them said, ‘Don’t you see this? Who amongst you can go and bring the dung, blood and the abdominal contents of the slaughtered camels of the family of so and so and then wait till he prostrates and put that in between his shoulders?’ The most unfortunate amongst them (`Uqba bin Abi Mu’ait) went away and when Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam prostrated, he put them between his shoulders. The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam remained in prostration and they laughed so much so that they fell on each other. A passerby went to Fatima Radi Allahu anhu, who was a young girl in those days. She came running and the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam was still in prostration. She removed them and cursed the Quraish on their faces. When Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam completed his prayer, he said, ‘O Allah! Take revenge on Quraish.’ He said so thrice and added, ‘O Allah! take revenge on `Amr bin Hisham, `Utba bin Rabi`a, Shaiba bin Rabi`a, Al-Walid bin `Utba, Umaiya bin Khalaf, `Uqba bin Abi Mu’ait and `Umar a bin Al-Walid.” `Abdullah (the narrator) added, “By Allah! I saw all of them dead in the battle field on the day of Badr and they were dragged and thrown in the Qalib (a well) at Badr: Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam then said, ‘Allah’s curse has descended upon the people of the Qalib (well). Bukhari Shareef

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam invoked Allah for forty days to curse the murderers from the tribe of Ral, Dhakwan, Bani Lihyan and Bam Usaiya who disobeyed Allah and his Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala alayhi wa sallam. Bukhari Shareef

The Most Compassionate Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam was ordered by Allah – سبحانه و تعالى – to tear down the so called “mosque” built by the hypocrites. So when it is ordered that even such “mosques” are to demolished, how foolish it would be for someone to assist in constructing such a building and praying behind hypocrites!

The building which they erected will constantly keep disturbing their hearts unless their hearts are torn to pieces; and Allah is All Knowing, Wise [Taubah 9:110].

On a Friday, the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam ascended the pulpit of the Masjid Nabawi and expelled 34 hypocrites saying, “Get out – you so and so, son of so and so – for you are a hypocrite”. When they were leaving the mosque, Syedna Umar bin Khattab Radi Allahu anhu arrived, thinking he was late. When he was later informed about it, he claimed he would have killed all of them rather than letting them go out alive. Fath al-BarI, Umdat ul-Qari

And after a long time of patiently forbearing the misdeeds of the hypocrites, he expelled them from the holy mosque in Medina (Masjid Nabawi). And we have now some evil scholars who openly invite proclaimed polytheists and infidels to desecrate our mosques and even perform their polytheistic worship inside it! What sort of faith is this? And what sort of Sunnah is this?

We also now have certain people saying that we should not call any Kaafir (disbeliever) a Kaafir. This is indeed a self-made rule – for it openly contradicts the Holy Qur’an (read Surah Kafiroon) and the Sunnah.

Narrated Syedna `Abdullah bin `Umar Radi Allahu anhu : When `Abdullah bin Ubai (bin Salul) died, his son came to Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam and said, “O Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, give me your shirt so that I may shroud my father’s body in it. And please offer a funeral prayer for him and invoke Allah for his forgiveness.” The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam gave him his shirt and said to him, “Inform us, when you finish call us”. When he had finished he told the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam and the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam proceeded to order his funeral prayers but `Umar Radi Allahu anhu stopped him and said, “Didn’t Allah forbid you to offer the funeral prayer for the hypocrites when He said, ”Whether you ask forgiveness for them or not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them.” Later, it was revealed: “And never offer funeral prayers for any of them who dies, nor stand by his grave.” (9.84) After that, Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam did not offer funeral prayers for the hypocrites. (Bukhari) – several versions

And once He Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam received the command of His Lord, Allah – سبحانه و تعالى -, he even stopped praying the funeral for the hypocrites although the hypocrites had not openly rejected Islam.

The following incident of Syedna Umar Radi Allahu anhu beheading a hypocrite is also very famous:

Two men had brought a dispute to the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam and he gave judgment between them. The one who had judgment given against him said, ‘Let us go to `Umar ibn al-Khattab,’ Radi Allahu anhu and so the two of them went to him. The man said, Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam gave judgment in my favor against this man and he said, “Let us go to `Umar.” Radi Allahu anhu’ `Umar Radi Allahu anhu said, “Is it like that?” He said, ‘Yes.’ So `Umar Radi Allahu anhu said, ‘Stay where you are until I come out to you.’ Then he came out to them wrapping his sword in his garment and struck the one who had said, ‘Let us go to `Umar,’ Radi Allahu anhu and killed him. The other returned and said, ‘Allah’s Apostle! Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam By Allah, `Umar Radi Allahu anhu killed my companion.’ So he said, ‘I wouldn’t have thought that `Umar Radi Allahu anhu would have ventured to kill a believer.’ Then Allah ta’ala revealed, “So O dear Prophet, by oath of your Lord, they will not be Muslims until they appoint you a judge” to the end of the ayah. (4:65) He Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam declared, there was to be no retaliation or compensation for the blood of the man and declared `Umar Radi Allahu anhu free from any wrong in his killing.

See the faith of Syedna Umar Radi Allahu anhu – he Radi Allahu anhu did NOT deem one to be a Muslim if he did not accept the Holy Prophet’s Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam judgment. In fact he slew him for his insolence. And reflect on the Holy Prophet’s Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam second judgment – he deemed the actions of Syedna Umar Radi Allahu anhu to be correct! subhanALLAH

We now quote the several examples of the leader of all mankind, the mercy unto the creation, the compassionate and loving prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam – whose character has been praised in the Holy Qur’an as being the noblest of all. And he the best to be followed!

See what the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam was commanded to proclaim, as is in the Holy Qur’an: to have all actions only for Allah, to shun the path of infidels, and to be separated in matters of religion from all disbelievers.

And the People given the Book(s) said, “Become Jews or Christians – you will attain the right path”; say, “No – rather we take the religion of Ibrahim, who was far removed from all falsehood; and was not of the polytheists.” [Baqarah 2:135]

Say, “Undoubtedly my prayers and my sacrifices, and my living and my dying are all for Allah, the Lord Of The Creation.” [Ana`am 6:162]

Proclaim, “O disbelievers!” Neither do I worship what you worship. Nor do you worship Whom I worship. And neither will I ever worship what you worship. Nor will you worship Whom I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is mine. [Kafiroon 109:1-6]

The noble Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam , the owner of the best character, made it very clear to the disbelievers that he gave precedence to his relation to faith over and above his politeness towards others.

Narrated Syedna Iyad ibn Himar Radi Allahu anhu: I presented a she-camel to the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam . He asked: Have you embraced Islam? I replied: No. The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam said, “I have been prohibited to accept the presents of polytheists. “ Abu Dawood

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam said, “Do not take precedence in greeting the Jews and the Christians. When you encounter one of them on the road, compel him to go by a narrow path.” Tirmidhi, Ahmed, Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood

The mercy unto the worlds Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam also ordered that the most wicked amongst them be killed, even whilst the scoundrel was taking refuge inside the Sacred Mosque in Mecca.

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam entered Mecca in the year of its conquest wearing an Arabian helmet on his head and when the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam took it off, a person came and said, “Ibn Khatal is holding the covering of the Ka`ba (taking refuge there)”. The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’ alayhi wa sallam said, “Kill him.” Bukhari, Muslim, Malik’s Muwatta

Say, “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your tribe, and your acquired wealth, and the trade in which you fear a loss, and the houses of your liking – if all these are dearer to you than Allah and His Noble Messenger and fighting in His way, then wait until Allah brings about His command; and Allah does not guide the sinful.” [Taubah 9:24]

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness of faith: (1). The one to whom Allah and His Apostle become dearer than anything else. (2). Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake. (3). Who hates to revert to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into the fire.” 6

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.” 7

The above verse from the Holy Qur’an and 2 narrations testify that just the proclamation of faith is not useful, unless a person truly loves Allah, and His beloved Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam.

LOVE FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH, HATE FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH

O People who Believe! Whoever among you reneges from his religion, so Allah will soon bring a people who are His beloved ones and Allah is their beloved, lenient with the Muslims and stern towards disbelievers – they will strive in Allah’s cause, and not fear the criticism of any accuser; this is Allah’s munificence, He may give to whomever He wills; and Allah is the Most Capable, the All Knowing. [Maidah 5:54]

See O dear Muslims! Whom does Allah the Supreme love? It is those Muslims who are soft-hearted towards their Muslim brothers, and stern with the disbelievers. And who do you think knows more than Allah? Read the following 2 Hadith to understand that the best of deeds in Allah’s sight are to have love for His sake, and to hate for His sake!

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “ The best of the actions is to love for the sake of Allah and to hate for the sake of Allah.” 8

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “ The most beloved of deeds in the sight of Allah is to love for the sake of Allah and to hate for the sake of Allah.” 9

And reflect on this Hadith, that defines the requirement of having perfect faith!

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “If anyone loves for Allah’s sake, hates for Allah’s sake, gives for Allah’s sake and withholds for Allah’s sake, he will have perfect faith.10

And the following 2 Hadith teach you how to maintain your faith (have the strongest link):-

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “The strongest link in faith is to have good relations only for the sake of Allah, and to have love only for the sake of Allah and hatred only for the sake of Allah.11

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “The strongest link in faith is to love only for the sake of Allah and hate only for the sake of Allah.” 12

Observe that loving for the sake of Allah, and hating for the sake of Allah is classified as the best of deeds – superior to prayers, pilgrimage, charity, fasting and even jihad – for all these cannot be properly achieved without firm faith, that depends on the above rules.

ALLAH IS PLEASED WITH THOSE WHO LOVE FOR HIS SAKE, AND HATE FOR HIS SAKE.

O People who Believe!
Mohammed is the Noble Apostle of Allah; and his companions are stern with the disbelievers and merciful among themselves – you will see them bowing and falling in prostration, seeking Allah’s munificence and His pleasure; their signs are on their faces, from the effects of their prostration; this trait of theirs is mentioned in the Taurat; and their trait is mentioned in the Injeel; like a cultivation that sprouted its shoot, then strengthened it, then thickened and then stood firm upon its stem, pleasing the farmer – in order to enrage the disbelievers with them; Allah has promised forgiveness and a great reward to those among them who have faith and do good deeds. [Fath 48:29]

You will not find the people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, befriending those who oppose Allah and His Noble Messenger, even if they are their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their tribesmen; it is these upon whose hearts Allah has ingrained faith, and has aided them with a Spirit from Himself; and He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding in them forever; Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him; this is Allah’s group; pay heed! Indeed it is Allah’s group who are the successful. [Mujadilah 58:22].

Subhan-Allah! The above 3 verses clearly explain with whom Allah is surely pleased. It with those whose actions of love and hate, and of keeping relations with anyone are solely based on the others’ relationship with Allah! They are His beloved ones, they are the group of Allah!

It is clearly explained in the last verse, that a Muslim will not befriend someone who disrespects Allah or His Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam; conversely, one who befriends them is not a Muslim. And apart from the generic and absolute nature of the command, there is a further clarification when ‘fathers, sons, relatives,’ are mentioned specifically, and that one cannot befriend or love any blasphemer, even if it is a natural instinct to do so; or else, one does not remain a believer.13

The verse in [Mujadilah 58:22] was revealed after the battle of Badr, in which some of the noble companions fought against their own fathers, brothers and uncles – and some of them actually killed their own relatives, not sparing them due to blood relations. Most notable among them are Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (one of the 10 companions who were promised Paradise) – he fought against and killed his own father. Syedna Abu Bakr al-Siddik fought against his own son, but did not get the chance to kill him.

Islamic history is full of instances of the companions, leaving their homes and properties, abandoning their closest relatives – all out of love for Allah and His Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam.

LOVE FOR FELLOW MUSLIMS, ONLY FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH

The following verse & Hadith make amply clear that a Muslim must love another Muslim, have no enmity or personal grudge between themselves, love each other for Allah’s sake, and wish the best for each other.

The Muslims are brothers to each other, therefore make peace between your two brothers and fear Allah, so that you may gain mercy. [Hujurat 49:10]

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “No two Muslims meet and shake hands without being forgiven before they separate.”14

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Do not hate one another, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not desert each other, and O Allah’s worshippers! Be brothers. Lo! It is not permissible for any Muslim to desert his brother (Muslim) for more than three days.” 15

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.” 16

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “You shall not enter Paradise so long as you do not affirm belief (in all those things which are the articles of faith) and you will not believe as long as you do not love one another. Should I not direct you to a thing which, if you do, will foster love amongst you? Give currency to “as-salamu alaikum” (peace be upon you).” 17

REWARD FOR LOVE OF FELLOW MUSLIMS, ONLY FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH

O my brother Muslims – ponder on the following, and if you wish to gain the immense reward promised by Allah – سبحانه و تعالى -, act upon these! Gain Allah’s forgiveness, gain His shade on the day of resurrection, be seated on thrones in paradise! What better reward can one expect!

And We have removed any resentments which were in their breasts – they are brothers, sitting face to face on thrones (in Paradise). [Hijr 15:47]

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “A person visited his brother in another town and Allah deputed an Angel to wait for him on his way and when he came to him he said, “Where do you intend to go? He said, “I intend to go to my brother in this town. He said, “Have you done any favour to him (the repayment of which you intend to get)? He said, “No, excepting this that I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. Thereupon he said, “I am a messenger to you from, Allah: (to inform you) that Allah loves you as you love him (for His sake).”18

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Allah will give shade, to seven (types of persons), on the Day when there will be no shade but His: a just ruler, a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake and they meet and part in Allah’s cause only, a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah, a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given, and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears.” 19

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “There are people from the servants of Allah who are neither prophets nor martyrs; the prophets and martyrs will envy them on the Day of Resurrection due to their rank they get from Allah, the Most High.” They (the people) asked: Tell us, Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, who are they? He replied: They are people who love one another for the spirit of Allah without having any mutual kinship and giving property to one. I swear by Allah, their faces will glow and they will be (sitting) in (pulpits of) light. They will have no fear (on the Day) when the people will have fear, and they will not grieve when the people will grieve. He then recited the following Qur’anic verse: “Pay heed! Indeed upon the friends of Allah is neither any fear, nor any grief” [10:62]. 20

Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Indeed, Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who have mutual love for My Glory’s sake? Today I shall shelter them in My shade when there is no other shade but the shade of Mine.” 21

A MAN WILL BE WITH THOSE WHOM HE LOVES

The Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Everyone will be with those whom he loves.” 22

A man asked the Holy Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam about the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying, “When will the Hour be?” The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “What have you prepared for it?” The man said, “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam.” The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “You will be with those whom you love.” We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam (i.e., “You will be with those whom you love.”) Therefore, I (the narrator Anas bin Malek) love the Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam, Abu Bakr and `Umar radi allahu anhu, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs.23

A man came to Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam What do you say about a man who loves some people but cannot catch up with their good deeds?” Allah’s Apostle Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam said, “Everyone will be with those whom he loves.”24

So O dear brothers! Be very careful whom you love! Chose the beloveds of Allah, so that you will be with them. Love only those whom Allah loves; the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the virtuous & all Muslims in general. For Allah is the friend of these.

Question: A person is a Mureed of a certain Murshid who passed away a long time ago. Now, can this Mureed of the demised Shiekh became the disciple (Mureed) of another Shiekh?

Answer: It is forbidden to change the Bay’at for no specific valid Islamic reasons. Yes, it is permissible to renew one’s Bay’at (Tajdeed). In fact, it is recommended to take Bay’at with another Murshid-e-Kaamil in the exalted Silsila of Qaderiyah without breaking ties with your Shiekh. Such Bay’at will not be regarded as a new one but a renewal of the old one. This is so because all Silsilas (Spiritual orders) leads to the main stream being the Silsila of Qaderiyah.

A’la Hadrat went on further: Once three Qalandars (certain type of Dervishes) humbled themselves in the illustrious presence of Shiekh-ul Mashaa’ikh, Sultan Nizamuddin Mehboob-e-Elahi (Radi Allah Anhu). They requested for food so the Shiekh ordered the Khadim (servant) to give them whatever was present. When the Khadim presented the food, the Qalandars looked at the food, picked it up, threw it and demanded better food. Witnessing this attitude of the guests, the great Sheikh did not comment, but ordered the Khadim to present better food. The Khadim then got better food and presented it to the guests. They looked at the food, picked it up and threw it for the second time. They then demanded better food. The Noble Shiekh still kept calm and ordered for better food. Better food was presented for the third time and the Qalandars threw it away and still demanded better food. After the third time, Sheikh-ul Mashaa’ikh called the Qalandar close to him and spoke very softly in his ears: “At least this food is better than the dead ox you ate on your way to me”.

When he heard this, the condition of the Qalandar changed. (On their way they were without food for three days and were starving. Eventually they came across a dead ox so they ate from it to survive). The Qalandars fell on the feet of great Shiekh and cried. Shiekh-ul Mashaa’ikh lifted them up and embraced them. They were spiritually blessed by the Sheikh. After this spiritual blessing, they started dancing in ecstasy saying: “My Murshid blessed me with Ne’mah”. The disciples present there said to them: “You fool! You came here as a destitute. Whatever you received was from our Sheikh (Murshid) and not from your Murshid”. They replied: “You are fools, because if it was not by the guidance of our Murshid, why would your Murshid bless us?” On hearing this, Khwaja Nizamuddin (Radi Allah Anhu) said: “They are speaking the truth. O my Brothers (disciples), if you want to learn how to become a Mureed, learn from these Qalandars”.

The belief of the mainstream Ahlus-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah is that our beloved Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and other Prophets (عليه السلام) are alive in their respective graves.

They are usually involved in performing prayers and worshiping Allah (out of their own free choice without it being obligatory on them), which we cannot normally see or feel just like Angels are alive and present but we cannot normally see them.

Proofs on the fact that Prophets (عليه السلام) remaining alive in their graves:

There are many proofs in the Qur’an, Hadith and sayings of the predecessors regarding the prophets remaining alive after death. Some are reproduced here:

Qur’an States:

Allah puts forth a Parable a man belonging to many partners at variance with each other, and a man belonging entirely to one master: are those two equal in comparison? Praise be to Allah. but most of them have no knowledge. [az-Zumar 39:29]

Truly thou wilt die (one day), and truly they (too) will die (one day). [az-Zumar 39:30]

As mentioned in (Verse number 29) the condition of two persons to be different, similarly the death of Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is not same like other deaths. There is great difference between the conditions and the levels of both. This example was given because of this reason that equality to the respect of Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (Shan-e-Nabuwah) should be condemned completely.

It is said that Ahlus-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah actually believes that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not die!! What a gross accusation!! The true belief of the Ahlus-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah is that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), did indeed “TASTE” death, but then he is made alive in his grave. (Note: All the proofs misused by certain people do prove that prophets including Huzoor (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had tasted death. We do believe in all those verses and Ahadith, so there is no two opinions about that point but the point to be discussed here is not the occurrence of death but the true concept of the death of a Prophet) It is in the grave that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is presented with our deeds, and makes supplication on behalf of the Ummah. There are also instances where the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) will appear in our dreams and comfort us with good news and glad tidings. We also believe that to send salaam (salutations) to our Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is directly recieved by him and that It will be met with a reply.

Qur’an States:

And say not of those who are slain (martyred) in the way of Allah, “they are dead”, nay, they are living, though you perceive it not” [Surah al-Baqarah, 154]

Of course, it goes without saying that the position of the Prophets (عليه السلام) is above and beyond the status of those who are martyred in Allah’s way. This proves that he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is alive too.

Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (Allah have mercy on him) states in his monumental commentary of Sahih al-Bukhari i.e. Fath al-Bari: “When the living of the martyrs is proven from the text of the Qur’an, then this is also proven from a analogical point of view. And the Prophets are superior then the martyrs” [Fath al-Bari, Volume 006: Page No. 379]

Qadhi Shawkawni writes: “In the Qur’an it is mentioned that martyrs are alive and food is provided for them. The Prophets and righteous people are a lot higher in status than them so what will be their place? It has been proven through Ahadith that Prophets are alive in their graves. Both Imam at-Tirmidhi and Imam al-Bayhaqi have said that these are authentic Ahadith” [Nayl al-Awtar, Volume 003, Page No. 82]

Hadith #1

Anas b. Malik (Allah have mercy on him) reported

Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) as saying: I came. And in the narration transmitted on the authority of Haddib (the words are): I happened to pass by Moses (عليه السلام) on the occasion of the Night journey near the red mound (and found him) saying his prayer in his Grave. [Sahih Muslim Book 030, Number 5858:]

Note: Praying inside grave represents “Haqeeqi” life

Hadith #2

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: I found myself in Hijr and the Quraish were asking me about my might journey. I was asked about things pertaining to Bait-ul-Maqdis which I could not preserve (in my mind). I was very much vexed, so vexed as I had never been before. Then Allah raised it (Bait-ul-Maqdis) before my eyes. I looked towards it, and I gave them the information about whatever they questioned me I also saw myself among the group of apostles. I saw Moses (عليه السلام) saying prayer and found him to be a well-built man as if he was a man of the tribe of Shanu’a. I saw Jesus son of Mary (عليه السلام) offering prayer, of all of men he had the closest resemblance with ‘Urwa b. Masu’d al-Thaqafi. When I completed the prayer, someone said: Here is Malik, the keeper of the Hell; pay him salutations. I turned to him, but he preceded me in salutation. [Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0328:]

Translation: Death is not something which brings a total end to something, it is rather transferring from one station to another, the proof of this is that martyres remain alive after getting killed or dying and they also get happy. “THIS IS THE QUALITY OF ALIVE PEOPLE IN WORLD” so when martyres are alive then “PROPHETS ARE MORE DESERVING OF LIFE THAN THEM” and it has come in Sahih hadith that Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, and on the night of Miraaj the Prophet (Peace be upon him) gathered with all Prophets in Masjid ul Aqsa and the Prophet (Peace be upon him) also “SAW MUSA (Alaih Salaam) PRAYING INSIDE HIS GRAVE” plus the Prophet has also provided the information that “ANYONE WHO SENDS SALUTATION UPON HIM, THEN HE REPLIES BACK”.Other than this, other ahadith also establish “TO CERTAINTY” that the meaning of death given to Prophets is that “THEY DISAPPEAR FROM OUR EYESIGHTS BUT IN REALITY THEY ARE ALIVE AND PRESENT” and their condition is like that of Angels, because Angels are also alive and “PRESENT” and nobody from human beings is able to see them, “EXCEPT FOR THE AWLIYA WHO THROUGH THEIR KARAMAH CAN EXPERIENCE THEM” [al-Mafhim lima Ashkala min Talkhis Kitab Sahih Muslim Volume 006, Page No. 233-4].

13. Imam al-Manawi (Allah have mercy on him) said about Musa (Alaih Salaam) praying in his grave:

الحديث بظاهره يدل على أنه رآه رؤية حقيقية في اليقظة وأنه حي في قبره يصلي الصلاة التي يصليها في الحياة وذلك وذلك ممكن ولا مانع من ذلك

Translation: This hadith apparently proves that sight of Prophet (Peace be upon him) “WAS REAL” and he (Musa Alaih Salaam) is “ALIVE IN GRAVE AND PRAYING, LIKE THE ALIVE PRAY” this is possible and there is nothing abstaining from it [Faydh ul Qadeer (5/663)]

Also, one of the major incidents that prove this, is the incident of Me’raj (Ascension of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to the heavens), where he met and conversed with many Prophets. He also led them in prayer in Masjid al-Aqsa.

Conclusion:

The above evidences from the Qur’an, Hadith and the sayings of the predecessors are sufficient to prove the fact that the Prophets (عليه السلام) remain alive in their graves after they pass away from this world. There are many other evidences which we have not mentioned here, due to the fear of prolonging our discussion.

Qur’an States:

No doubt. Allah has purchased from the muslims their lives and their belongings against this return, that for them is Paradise, they fight in the way of Allah, then they kill and are killed; true promise on His generous responsibility in the Taurah and the Injeel and the Quran. And who is, true to his words than Allah’? Rejoice then in your trade ‘ which you have done with Him And it is this which is, the great triumph. [At-Tawba 9:111]

They were so influential and powerful that listeners would go into spiritual ecstasy.

Some of them would tear their clothes. Others would fall unconscious. On some occasions, certain listeners would become so lost in the gems of love for Allah and His Rasool (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) that the great Saint (alaihir rahmah) presented in his lectures, that they would even pass away in this condition.

On various occasions, even non-Muslims came to his lectures. After listening to his lectures they would find that they could not refute anything he said and they would willingly accept Islam.

In addition to the ordinary members of the public, Rijaal-ul-Ghaib and Jinns also frequented his blessed gatherings.

Akaabireen and Mashaa’ikh also frequented his gatherings. It was a training school for the young, a place to repent for the sinful, a place of guidance for the misguided, and a bank of spiritualism for the spiritually bankrupt.

His voice was very stern and sharp. One of the miracles of his Majlis was that each and every person sitting there heard him alike, even though in those times, there was no means of voice amplification, such as microphones and the like.

Al-Ghawth al-A’zam’s (alaihir rahmah) close student, Sayyidi Abdullah Jabaa’ee (alaihir rahmah), states that during this era of his lectures, more than 100, 000 sinners repented at the blessed hands of al-Ghawth al-A’zam (alaihir rahmah) and thousands of Jews and Christians accepted Islam at his hands.

All the great scholars agree that during that era the majority of the people in Baghdad repented from their wrongs at the hands of the great Saint and also became his disciples.

Once, thirteen

Christians accepted Islam in the Majlis of Sheikh Abd al-Qaadir al-Jilani (alaihir rahmah). When they were requested to explain their acceptance of Islam, they said that they heard of the religion of Islam and that their hearts were pleased with this Deen but they had been in search of a true servant of Allah who would, by looking at them, dispel the darkness of their hearts. While they were in search of this true servant of Allah, they heard a Voice from the Unseen saying,

“Go to Sheikh Abd al-Qaadir in Baghdad and bring Islam on his hands, for it is he who will cleanse your hearts and fill it with light of Imaan
(Faith)”.

When the thirteen Christians received this message from the Unseen, they travelled to Baghdad and accepted Islam on the hands of Sheikh Abd al-Qaadir Jilani (alaihir rahmah).

On one occasion, a monk named “Sanaan” presented himself in the gathering of Sheikh Abd al-Qaadir al-Jilani (alaihir rahmah) and accepted Islam on the hands of the great Saint.

After bringing Imaan, he stood up in the gathering and said:

“O people! I am a citizen of Yemen and for many years I lived in seclusion as a Christian Monk. For some time now, I have realised the truth of Islam, but after looking at the ways of the present Muslims, I delayed my acceptance of Islam and made a vow that I will accept Islam on the hands of a person who is the most pious amongst people. After making this vow, one night, I dreamt of Sayyiduna Esa Masih (alaihis salaam) who said,

‘O Sanaan! Go to Baqhdad and accept Islam on his hands. At the present moment, there is none on this earth that is more pious and firm on religion than he is, and there is none more exalted than him in this time.’

After this dream, I came here today and accepted Islam and I have found him to be as I have heard.”

Al-Ghawth al-A’zam’s (alaihir rahmah) lectures were inspiring to all who frequented his Majlis.

His words were kind but firm. He was not swayed by the power or status of anyone. If they were wrong, he did not hesitate to correct them in his Majlis or anywhere else. He feared none but Allah and made those who were in his Majlis aware of this.

Once, one of the close ministers of the Khalifa Azeezud’deen came to the Majlis of Sheikh Abd al-Qaadir al-Jilani (alaihir rahmah). When he saw him, the great Saint said, “The condition of those like you is such, that one man is lost in the slaveship of another.

Who then is the true slave of Allah?”

He then addressed Azeezud’deen directly and said,

“Stand up! Keep your hand on my hand so that you may distance yourself from this mundane world and run towards your Creator.”

Bismillāh il Rahmān il Raheem

Alhamdulillāhi Rabbil Álamīn w’al Salāt ū w’al Salām ū ála Sayyidunā wa Mawlanā Muhammad, Rahmatul il Álamīn, Sayyid ul Mursalīn, Khātim al Nabiyīn wa Qā’id al Ghurr il Muhajalīn wa ála Ālihī wa Sahbihī ajmaīn wa man tabīhum bi ihsānin ‘ila yawm il Dīn.

Question: What do the respected ‘Ulama of Dīn and the Muftī’s of the Shariáh say about the Hadīth “law laaka lama khalaqtul aflaak” Which book is this Hadīth in? Is Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam the reason for creation or not? Are there other ahadīth that support this narration?

Answer: Indeed Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam is the reason for the creation of Adam álayhis salām and the universe. If Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam was not in existence, then the Ársh and Farsh, Lawh and Qalām, the Skies and the Earth, Heaven and Hell, the trees and stones and all other creatures would not exist. There are many aḥadīth to this effect.

Hadīth 1

Hākim in Mustadrak, Bayhaqī in Dalā’il an-Nabuwwah, Tabarānī in Kabīr, Abū Nuáym in Hilya and Ibn Ásākir in Tārīkh Dimashq report from Sayyidunā Ameer al- Mu’minīn Fārūq al-Ádham rađhī Allāhu ánhu that:

Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam said: “Allāh táālā said: When Adam made an error, he asked: O Allāh! I ask you for the sake of Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] to forgive me. Allāh táālā said: O Adam! How do you recognise Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] when I have not yet created him? Adam said: O Allāh! When you created me and blew into me the spirit, I lifted my head and saw written on the Ársh ‘Lā ilāha illAllah Muhammad-ur-Rasūlullah’. So, I got to know that you would only join your name with him who is most beloved to you. Allāh táālā said: O Adam! You have spoken the truth. Indeed Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] is more beloved to me than anything and when you asked me for his sake, I pardoned you. If Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] was not in existence, I would not have created you”.

[Also from Shaykh Taqī ad-Dīn Subkī in Shifá as-Siqām and Shihāb ad-Dīn Khafājī in Nasīm ar-Riyādh]

Hadīth 2

Hākim in Mustadrak and Abū as-Shaykh in Tabaqāt, al-Isfahānī in report from Sayyidunā ‘Abdullah ibn Ábbās rađhī Allāhu ánhu that:

“Allāh táālā revealed to Prophet Īsa álayhis salām that: O Īsa! Have Īmān in [Sayyidunā] Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] and order your Ummah to do the same. If Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] was not in existence, I would not have created Adam nor would I have made heaven or hell”.

[Also from Shaykh Taqī ad-Dīn Subkī in Shifá as-Siqām and Shaykh al-Islām al-Balqīnī in his Fatāwa and ibn Hajar in Afdal al-Qurá]

Hadīth 3

Daylamī in Musnad al-Firdaus reports from Sayyidunā Ábdullah ibn ‘Abbās rađhī Allāhu ánhu that:

Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam said that Jibra’il álayhis salām came to me and said that Allah says: If you were not created, I would not have made the heaven or hell.

Ḥadīth 4

ibn Ásākir reports from Salmān al-Fārsī rađhī Allāhu ánhu that:

Jibra’il álayhis salām came to Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam and said that Allāh táālā says: I have not created anyone who is more honoured to me than you. I have created the world and all that is therein so that they may know the rank that you possess. I would not have created the world if I had not created you.

Ḥadīth 5

Imām Shihāb ad-Dīn ibn Hajar al-Ásqalānī says:

These reports say that if Sayyidunā Muḥammad şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam were not created then Allāh táālā would not have made the skies nor the Earth, neither heaven nor hell, neither the sun nor the moon.

There are many other ahadīth on this subject which have been collected by Imām Ahmad Ridā in his brilliant Tajallī al-Yaqīn bi anna Nabiyyana Sayyidil Mursalīn and it is without doubt that the righteous ‘Ulama have addressed Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam as the “Reason for the creation of Adam álayhis salām and the universe”. If the sayings of our ‘Ulama are collected, this would cover a voluminous book. A few are noted below.

Excerpt 1

Imām Sayf ad-Dīn Abū Jáfar bin ‘Umar al-Humairi al-Hanafī in his al-Durr al-Tanzīm fī Mawlid al-Nabī al-Karīm says:

When Allāh táālā made Adam álayhis salām He revealed to Adam ‘alayhis salām to ask Him: O Allāh! Why have you made my kunyah as ‘Abu Muhammad’? Allāh táālā said: O Adam álayhis salām! Lift your head. He lifted his head and saw the nūr [light] of RasūlAllāh sall Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on the Ársh. Adam álayhis salām asked: O Allah! Whose is this nūr? Allah said: It is a Prophet from your progeny. His name is Ahmad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] in the skies and Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] on the Earth. If he were not created, I would not have created you or the skies and the Earth.

Excerpt 2

Sayyidī Abul Husayn Hamdooni Shādhilī writes in his Qasīda Dāliyah that:

The dear Prophet şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam is the essence of the universe and is the reason for all creation. Had he not have been, then nothing would have come into existence.

Excerpt 3

Imām Sharaf ad-Dīn Abū Ábdullah Muḥammad Busīrī writes in his Qasīda Burdah that:

If it was not for Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam then the world would not exist.

Excerpt 4

Imām Shaykh Ibrāhīm Bayjurī writes in the commentary of Imām Busīrī’s poem:

If Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam had remained non-existent, then the universe would not have come to be. Allāh táālā said to Adam álayhis salām: If Muhammad [şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam] had not existed, I would not have created you. Adam álayhis salām is the father of all men and whatever is in the Earth has been created for man. So when Adam álayhis salām was created due to the existence of Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam, then it is obvious that the whole world was created due to him. Hence, Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam is the cause and the reason for all existence.

Excerpt 5: Állāmah Khālid Azharī, commenting on the Burdah, says:

It is because of Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam that the world was bought from non-existence to existence.

Excerpt 6: Imām Mullah Álī al-Qārī writes:

If it were not for the blessing and the generosity of Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam, then the whole world would not have existed and apart from Allāh táālā, nothing would exist.

Excerpt 7: Állāmah Abul Ayash ‘Abdul Álī Lakhnawi writes in his Fawatih al-Rahmūt Sharh Musallam al-Thubūt that:

If Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam were not in existence, then the blessings of Allāh táālā would not have blessed the creation.

Only an ignoramus will argue against the authenticity of the subject matter, that is, that Sayyidunā RasūlAllāh şal Allāhu álayhi wa sallam is the reason for creation. It is due to him that Allāh táālā, created the Universe.

[This answer has been translated by Muḥammad Aqdas from Muftī Zafar ad-Dīn al-Bihārī al-Ridawī’s collection of fatawa, Naafi’il Bashar fī Fatāwa Zafar. It is a question asked by Shaykh Rahim Bakhsh of Rawalpindi received by Muftī Zafar ad-Dīn on 15th Rajab, 1324 AH. Muftī Zafar ad-Dīn was one of the foremost students of Imam Ahl as-Sunnah Imām Ahmad Ridā, the greatest scholar of the 20th century.]

A question was asked to the Great Mujaddid A’laHadrat Ash-Shah Imam Ahmad Rida Khan Al-Qadiri (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu) regarding the Duties of Children towards deceased Parents… Over which HE stated the following points:

1. The first and foremost duty of the children after the death of the parent is that he should immediately arrange and take part in Ghusl, Salatul Janaza and Burial which should be done in accordance with the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, and hope for them to receive the Mercy of Almighty Allah.

2. He should always make Dua and Istigfar for them at all times and never be unconscious about it.

3. He should give out Sadaqah and Khayrat (Charity) and always send the rewards of good deeds (Aa’mal-e-Sawleh) to them in accordance to his personal capacity. When performing Salah and keeping Fast (Roza), do likewise for them. Actually, for any good deed performed, the Sawab should be forwarded to them and all deceased Muslims and this will not affect the benefits one will receive, in any way. On the contrary, the Sawab of such acts will be beneficial to himself, his parents and all the deceased of the Ummah.

4. If the parents left behind any kind of debts or credits it should be paid in full immediately from one’s personal wealth, which should be regarded as blessings of this Duniya and akhirah. If you cannot afford to pay, assistance should be taken from the family, close friends or charitable Muslims.

5. If he has not performed Hajj, firstly, try to perform his Hajj-e-Badal for him personally, or send someone as a representative to do so. If he has any previous Zakah to be paid, do so immediately. If he has any Qada of Salat or Roza (Fasting) perform the Kaffarah for him. The children should, in all aspects, try their best to execute the duties of their parents which were left undone.

6. Whatever desires and wishes were made by the parent should be carried out even though it may displease you and the Shariah does not compel you to. For example, if he has made a Wasiyat (Wish) to give half of his wealth or belongings to a dear friend, non-inheritor or total outsider, even though in accordance to the Law of the Shariah, one-third of the wealth or belongings cannot be given to anyone without the consent of the heirs, it is best for the heirs to execute the Wasiyat and priority to the wishes and happiness of the deceased.

7. If he has taken an oath, carry it out after his death. If the parents had sworn an oath that their child must not do a certain thing or not meet with a certain person or must not go to a certain place, it must not be discarded after the death, saying :”Well, they are not alive so I can do certain things.” Wrong! One should abide by it as he did while they were alive, as long as it does not conflict with the Shariah.

8. Visit their graves every Friday and recite Sura Yaseen at the graveside loudly and pass the Sawab of recitation to them. While travelling, never pass their graves without greeting and performing Fateha.

9. As long as you live, be kind to their relatives.

10. Maintain friendship and respect for all their relatives.

11. Never, at any time, insult anyone’s parents, so that they may not insult yours.

12. The most difficult duty is never to commit any sin and inflict harm to them in their graves. All deeds of the children are taken to their parents in the grave. On seeing the good deeds they are very pleased and their faces glitter with happiness. On the contrary, if they see the bad deeds or sins, they become very sad.

–

O! Merciful and Most Forgiving Allah! The Almighty and All Powerful! On behalf of your most Beloved Prophet, Mercy of the Universe (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam), protect us from sins and grant us the guidance and courage to always do good. Fill the graves of our elders and deceased with Light and happiness. O Allah! You are the All Powerful, we are the weak. You are the Wealthy and we are the poor. Protect us… Aameen!!
