November 8, 2009 was Orphan Sunday.  Around the world churches came together to remember the plight of 145 million children around the world without families.  At AABC, we featured a practical conversation on adoption between Pastor David Prince and Pastor Jeremy Haskins.  This audio also includes a song that Pastor Nate BeVier wrote, “Rescue Me!”

On November 8, 2009 churches across America will be called to remember the plight of 145 million children created in the image of God who are suffering without the love of a family.  At AABC, one of the primary ways our commitment to the fatherless is fleshed out is through adoption. Not everyone can or should adopt, but everyone in our congregation is called to be apart of the process by supporting families who are adopting.

On Orphan Sunday we will gather at 6:00 p.m. to hear a practical conversation about adoption between Pastor David and Pastor Jeremy. Topics will include: the adoption process, financial issues, transracial adoption, AABC’s ABBAA Fund, the personal reward and struggle of adopting.

Even if you never plan to adopt, join us to hear how you can personally walk with those who do adopt and how you can invest in the lives of the children who are being rescued by our church family.

Join us October 17 and 18 at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church for God on Marriage. This conference will be led Dr. Danny Akin, President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Akin is the author of God on Sex (Nashville: Broadman, 2003) and has written extensively on the subject of marriage.  Dr. Akin is a powerful preacher and effective communicator of God’s word.  He has a wonderful marriage to Charlotte and has raised four mighty men for Jesus: Nathan, Jonathan, Paul, and Timothy.

Mission Unreached  ”a global experience for kids” will run alongside our conference, beginning each evening at 7pm and Sunday at 915am. The kids will travel to six unreached people groups around the world, experiencing the living conditions as well as the culture of each of these groups.  Mission Unreached begins Wednesday 23rd at 7pm with missionary training.

I want to personally invite the folks of AABC to consider attending Together for Adoption with me on October 2-3, 2009.  The Conference will be held a Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Together for Adoption features some great preachers.  There will also be tons of information from adoption and orphan care organizations, information that will be vital for our church as we seek to serve the 132 million orphans worldwide. You can register for the conference here or simply contact me.  There are discounts for church groups as well as college students interested in attending the conference.  Who would not want to spend a weekend in Tennessee of all places considering this glorious subject?

Michael Card, the acclaimed singer/songwriter and author will join us for a free concert in the heart of our 2009 World Impact Conference “Unreached.” All are welcome to attend. Each Equipped Wednesday a AABC includes a community bible study.  This semester during our community bible study Pastor Jeremy Haskins will lead a study through the book of Genesis. The study is called Promise.  Join us each Wednesday at 6:30 pm, in the worship center to see how the promise that was given at the beginning of time still transforms our lives today.

Opportunities for Community (beginning at 6:30p.m.)

• Family Meal 5:30 p.m. There is a meal in our family center each Wednesday evening.  This meal helps families from having to rush home (or to McDonalds) then back to church.  We also use this time to pray for the needs of our church body together.  Our Bible Fellowship Groups take turns providing this service to our church community. If you would like to make reservations for this meal, you can call the church office (85926643441). 

Opportunities for Transformation (beginning at 6:30p.m.) 

• Community Bible Study, led by Pastor Jeremy Haskins.  This semester Pastor Jeremy is leading a study through the book of Genesis entitled, “Promise.”
• Ladies Transformational Bible Study.  This semester our ladies are taking part in a study called, “Because He Loves Me” by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick 
• Journey children’s ministry meets each Wednesday to creatively equip our children (nursery - 5th grade) for the task of taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.  
• Veritas student ministry meets in the loft.  This semester our student will be considering the issue of SACRIFICE led by our student ministry leader Casey McCall. 
• Other opportunities for transformation will be added throughout the semester.  

Opportunities for Mission (beginning at 6:30p.m.)

• Touchpoint is AABC’s outreach ministry.  At 6:30 p.m. we head out to follow up with guests and to  share Christ within our community.  Our BFG leaders also take part in Touchpoint by contacting folks who need the ministry of a small group.  You can also be apart of Touchpoint by writing letters and making phone calls to our guest.

AABC’s annual Vacation Bible School is this week (July 20-24) for ages 3-5th grade from 6:00-8:30 p.m.  There will be lots of fun, including games, crafts, and rally times for kids of all ages.  Make sure to join us for this exciting week as we learn more about what the Bible says about Jesus.  You can register for VBS when you arrive.  For more information call the church office 266-4341.   

The Peasall Sisters—Sarah, 19; Hannah, 16; and Leah, 13; have earned GRAMMY and CMA Awards for their part in the blockbuster O Brother, Where Art Thou? movie and soundtrack.  They have performed at such esteemed venues as Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall with the acclaimed Down From the Mountain tour, in addition to the Grand Ole Opry. 

Our Stars and Stripes concert series will begin at 7:00 pm on July 5th with interchangeable sets by both the Peasall Sisters and singer/songwriter Andy Gullahorn. The Peasall sisters will also be accompanying Pastor Nate Bevier as he leads our congregation in worship at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. 

AABC’s annual Vacation Bible School will take place on July 20-24 for ages 3-5th grade from 6:00-8:30 p.m.  You can pre-register for VBS - Studio Go here

Join us for this free event on July 5th.  Stars and Stripes is our gift to the Lexington-Metro area.  There will be tons of activities for the whole family including a KIDZ ZONE for children.  We will also have in concert Grammy Award winning bluegrass artist, The Peasall Sisters, as well as, Singer Songwriter, Andy Gullahorn.  The evening will end with a huge firework display!

When our churches are countercultural kingdom outposts, we’ll start to see the joy of a life that’s more meaningful than a two-car garage and a vacation at this year’s faddish theme park.  Once people learn to see their brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers in ways more significant than simply the flesh, adoption just doesn’t seem so strange anymore.

The childlike Kingdom we’ve come into is filled with transracial adoptees like you and me.  It’s made up of “special needs” orphans like us.  Sometimes adoptions turn out with families that look remarkably similar - almost - “natural,” you might say. But let’s not fall for the carnality that values boys over girls, that pits ethnicities against one another, or that is repulsed by physical or emotional weakness.  Let’s be people of Christ, and, like him, let’s teach ourselves to welcome children into our homes, even in those out culture tells us we’re not supposed to want.
