Fair Use Code Issued by Association of Research Libraries

A recurring question for students, faculty, and librarians is what use they can legally make of text, music, pictures, or video without violating copyright. We have a new resource to draw on in grappling with that question with the release yesterday of the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries, issued by the Association of Research Libraries.

A product of two years of interviews and discussions, and developed in conjunction with the Center for Social Media and the Washington College of Law at Washington University, this Code is expected to be of considerable assistance to libraries when faced with the conflicting claims of copyright holders and researchers. First Ashland University Honors Thesis Joins OhioLINK ETD Center

Sarah Ebinger, class of 2011, has become the first Ashland University Honors student to have her thesis included in the OhioLINK Electronic Theses & Dissertations Center, home to more than 34,000 theses and dissertations written at Ohio universities and colleges. A major in Child and Family Studies with a minor in Religion, Sarah wrote her thesis, “International Students’ Perceptions of University Assistance with their Social Adjustment,” under the mentorship of Dr. Cindy Moseman of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. With the posting of Sarah’s thesis, Ashland University joins nine other Ohio colleges and universities that contribute undergraduate honors theses to the OhioLINK ETD Center.

OhioLINK Digital Resource Commons Downtime

This outage will have no effect on other services (e.g. Student Email, Employee Email, ANGEL, Mediasite, etc.) however, your ability to access these systems via the main AU website will be temporarily unavailable. AU web services that are bookmarked will be available but there will be no access through the main www.ashland.edu website for a few hours what the site is prepared for cutover to the new homepage." -- AU Campus Communications, Information Technology

Library Spotlight: Ohio in the Civil War

In addition to the two display areas on the library main floor, there are a number of display cases throughout the library providing information to users about campus activities and various library collections. The display case located outside the library instruction classroom on the ground floor, "Ohio in the Civil War," was created by Serials & Technical Services Assistant Karin Hootman and features information on the Battle of Bluffington Island, The Fighting McCooks, 120th Ohio Infantry, and Johnsons Island.

ProQuest Database Maintenance

ProQuest databases will be unavailable because of planned maintenance from 10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, until 10:00 a.m. Sunday. Databases affected include ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, American Periodical Series, The Wall Street Journal (ProQuest Newspapers), and Physical Education Index.

New Ancestry Database

Ashland University now has access to Ancestry Library Edition, a database produced by ProQuest and Ancestry.com. With Ancestry Library Edition you can do genealogical research using census records of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other countries. Also included are birth, marriage, and death records; passenger lists and naturalization records; land and probate records; military records; and more. Ancestry Library Edition is accessible only from the campus network.

OhioLINK Expands with SearchOhio

OhioLINK services are expanding through a new partnership with SearchOhio, a group of 19 Ohio public library systems with more than 1.9 million titles and 12.8 million items. Ashland University faculty, students, and staff are now able to order books and other materials from SearchOhio libraries for pickup at one of the four AU pickup locations. In addition, AU library users who have a library card at one of the Search Ohio libraries can order materials from either OhioLINK or SearchOhio for pickup at their public library.

OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center Migration

OhioLINK is in the process of moving the more than 15 million articles of the Electronic Journal Center (EJC) to a new server. Although the appearance will be much the same, the EJC will have a new search platform that will support expanded search functions and better linking from databases to full text in the EJC. Citations and alerts that have been stored in MyEJC will also be carried across to the new server.

The cutover is scheduled for Thursday morning, October 6th, during which the EJC is expected to be down for about an hour. New journal content, which recently has not been loaded into the EJC pending the transition, is expected to be added beginning October 11th.

OhioLINK - OCLC Collection Analysis Project

OhioLINK and OCLC released a report detailing collection analysis of academic library usage of books and manuscripts "because these materials typically circulate, and circulation is a significant element in evaluating collections" (OhioLINK What's New, 9/29/11).

The data used in the report was from a collaborative OCLC-OhioLINK Collection and Circulation Analysis project that joined OhioLINK circulation data with WorldCat bibliographic records to produce a base file of circulation records for nearly 30 million different books. Ninety institutions participated in the study, including 16 universities, 23 community/technical colleges, 50 private colleges and the State Library of Ohio. The size of the combined collection and the number and diversity of participating institutions make this by far the largest and most comprehensive study of academic library circulation ever undertaken. -- OhioLINK What's New, 9/29/11

Library Spotlight: Recreational Reading

OhioLINK Maintenance Downtime

OhioLINK will be doing maintenance work on its systems from 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19th, until 4:00 a.m. the next morning, and again from 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 26th, until 4:00 a.m. the following morning. This work may interfere with access to a wide range of OhioLINK resources, including the OhioLINK Catalog, databases, eBook collections, OLinks, and the Electronic Journal Center.

LIC: Accent on Success

Accent on Success classes are meeting with reference librarians this week for library instruction and orientation sessions. The LIC, or Library Instruction Classroom, is located on the ground floor of AU Library. When entering the library near the auriculum, stairs are located to the right and elevators are available across from the circulation desk. If using the patio entrance, stairs are located past the recreational reading and computer work area on your left.
