Olympian Liu Xiang to star in Jackie Chan Movie

One of China’s most decorated athlete, Liu Xiang, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan has joined forces. Liu Xiang will make his movie debut with his role in Jackie’ Chan’s movie series, Police Story. The movie has yet to be filmed.

Disney Shanghai Coming Soon

China’s planning agency just approved plans for a Disney theme park in Shanghai, China. The purpose Disney site will be located in eastern Pudong district near the airport.

Popular Korean girl group, Wonder Girls, became the first Korean signers to enter the top 100 of the US Billboard charts. Their song, “Nobody” released in June ranked 76th of the October Billboard Hot 100.

According to Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation’s survey, Figure skating champ Kim Yu-na and actor Cha Tae-hyun were the were most coveted celebrities by the advertising industry in the first half of the year.

Actress Kim Tae-hee, who topped the list last year among female celebrities, came in second, followed by actress Jeon Ji-hyun, pop star Lee Hyo-lee, and actresses Kim Nam-joo, Han Ga-in and Lee Young-ae.

Last year’s top male finisher, actor Jang Dong-gun, came in second this year. Singer Rain, footballer Park Ji-sung, actor Lee Min-ho, singer and actor Lee Seung-gi followed.

The Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF), which South Korea claims as the largest international film event, opened Thursday. Among the notable attendees included Jost Hartnett, Li Bingbing, Jang Dong-gun and Lee Byung Hun.

Surprising, Chicago lost on the first round even though U.S. President Obama and First Lady along with Queen of Talk Show host, Oprah, pitched for Chicago. Rio de Janerio and Madrid remain in contention. The winner will be announced later today for the right to host 2016 Olympics.

Zhao Benshan, China’s best known comedian, remained in stable condition Wednesday after undergoing an operation, media reports said. A native of Liaoning Province, Zhao is now a household-name comedy actor in China. He has been diversifying into fields of singing, sitcom directing and even business in recent years.

For the first time in his career, Jet Li will star in a film that has no martial arts action scenes. Not sure if his die-hard fans will appreciate Li’s new movie with no action scenes. In Xue Xiaolu’s directorial debut, Li will star as the father of an autistic child next to Kwai Lun-Mei.

Weaving Girl Movie wins at Montreal World Film Festival

Chinese film “Weaving Girl” grabbed the second highest prize at the closing ceremony of the 33rd Montreal World Film Festival Monday.

“Weaving Girl,” directed by Wang Quan’an and leading actress Yu Nan, tells about the struggled life of a textile factory woman worker. It won both the special Grand Prix of the Jury, the runner-up prize, as well as the International film critics prize.

The top prize, the Grand Prix of the Americas, was won by French director Tony Gatlif’ for his film, “Korkoro”
