Thailand boasts a tropical climate all year round and people who want to soak up the sun travel here to head straight to Thailand’s beautiful beaches via the great number of readily available Thailand flights. There are literally hundreds of stretches of powdery white sand to be found throughout Thailand, and what follows is a guide to some of the best.

Snorkeling spot on Ko Lipe island, near Pattaya Beach

Pattaya is located just to the east of Bangkok and this is perhaps the nation’s most easily accessible beach. while the beach itself is rather small, it is lined with an excellent range of amenities such as shops, bars and restaurants, while the nightlife scene here is particularly vibrant.

Hua Hin is a charming beach resort that can be found a short drive to the south of Bangkok. the main stretch of sand here is long and wide and is regularly used to host events such as the annual jazz festival, while visitors can also hire deckchairs and take donkey rides on the beach.

However, most of the best beaches in Thailand can be found on the tropical islands that are located to the east of Bangkok and in the southwest of the country. Sai Kaew Beach is the most vibrant and popular beach on the tiny island of Koh Samed. This pretty beach stretches for a kilometre, from the small beach bars at the north of the beach to more crowded areas towards the middle and the southern end.

Haad Rin is a large beach located on the southern tip of Koh Pha Ngan. This beach is famous for its monthly full moon parties, which attract people from all over the world. During the full moon and half-moon parties Haad Rin is full of fun loving people dancing the night away on the sand. This beach is particularly picturesque and is lined with numerous beach bars and restaurants, which means that sun worshippers never have far to go in search of refreshments or entertainment.

Last but not least, nearby Koh Tao is a real haven for beach lovers. The waters here are particularly cool and clear, and this is an excellent place to try diving and snorkelling. Most of the bars, restaurants and hotels here can be found close to the beaches on the west side of the island, while the eastern beaches tend to be much quieter.

Before going to Thailand for the first time, my ideas about the country mainly revolved around beautiful beaches and the urban bustle of Bangkok. However, when I actually arrived and started exploring, it was not Phuket or the capital that truly caught my fancy – it was the northern city of Chiang Mai.

Start planning your trip to Chinag Mai here!

Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai City

Being further off the beaten road than the more popular beach destinations, it is only now coming into the limelight. But now, Chiang Mai is getting tons of attention, and for all the right reasons. The city and province show another side of Thailand, one that definitely merits a visit and perhaps even a longer stay.

The Food

Where to start with describing Chiang Mai? Being somewhat of an amateur foodie, I have to go with the cuisine. Southern Thailand may get all the love for the fresh seafood, but Chiang Mai is where the country’s true flavors of lemongrass and cilantro come out to play. For lunch, a great place to sample the tastes of the town is at one of the many street food stalls and shops on Inthawororot Road.

Food Stalls, Kad Suan Kaew, Chiang Mai

Make sure to get there before 1pm or most of the best dishes could already be gone. Upscale restaurants exist for dinner, but keep in mind that the food from smaller spots is just as good and much cheaper to boot.

Chiang Mai by Day

With eating out of the way, it’s time to talk about what Chiang Mai has to offer in terms of activities. The truth about the city is that it’s actually quite small, but the range of things to do is very large. With a metro population of slightly less than 1 million people, new activities are appearing all the time, but these are some of my favorites from past trips.

Sports and Physical Activities

The surrounding province means that there are tons of active sporting opportunities and Chiang Mai tours. Rafting in the Mae Tang River is very cheap and the rainy season can bring grade 4 and 5 rapids. More expensive, but a once-in-a-lifetime chance is the zipline tour of the rainforest canopy, which can also include a visit to the outstanding Mae Kompong waterfall.

Rafting on Mae Tang River, Chiang Mai

Religious Temples

One of the most common images associated with Chiang Mai is of the many temples in and near the city. The list includes Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, which is nearly 20 kilometers outside of town, but definitely worth the effort to get there.

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai

The gold-plated temple is one of the best examples of Buddhist architecture. In Chiang Mai proper, the Wat Phra Singh inside the city walls shows a completely different type of temple.

Wat Phra Singh, Chinag Mai

Museums

Despite its relatively small size, the city of Chiang Mai is home to a number of impressive museums, many of which deserve a spot in a traveler’s itinerary. The Arts and Cultural Center is a great place to learn about the Thai history in the region. Another interesting choice is the Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders. Comparatively expensive at 300 Baht per person, budget visitors may want to save this one for another visit if they are pressed for time.

Chiang Mai by Night

If Chiang Mai is on your list of destinations, then you probably already know a little something about how the city comes alive once the sun goes down. At the same time, there may be some night activities that have slipped past your radar. Here are a couple of the top things to do on balmy Chiang Mai nights.

Nightmarket in Chiang Mai

The Night Safari

The zoo is open during the day, but the time to pay a visit is definitely at night. A guided safari tour starts at around 8-9pm each night and will take you through several different environments. In the dark setting, the savanna feels more real and spotting various beasts can add a touch of excitement to the event. The night safari includes animals like African hunting dogs, Asian black bears, and white tigers, just to name a few.

Zoo Entrance, Chiang Mai

The Night Market

Temperatures in the daytime can get pretty high, so the Thai solution in Chiang Mai has been to hold a massive market at night. When the sun starts going down, the shopping action starts heating up. Most vendors will have their wares on display no later than 6pm and some stay open as late as midnight. In short, everything is for sale here, from beautiful silk clothes and custom jewelry to art and cheap souvenirs.

Sunday Nightmarket in Chiang Mai

Drinking in Chiang Mai

When the night market begins to shut down, many travelers opt for a drink or two at one of the city’s many watering holes. While there are plenty of options in the same area as the night market, there are also some other places to go. On the banks of the Ping River is the spot for live music.

Moon Muang Road is another common choice, with plenty of clubs and dancing opportunities. For a strange experience, taking in a show at the Simon or Blue Moon Cabaret may give a glimpse of the “ladyboy” scene in the city.

Nightlife in Chiang Mai

Where to Stay

One of the great things about Chiang Mai is that lodging is both cheap and high quality. Here are some ideas for accommodation options:

20 Best Guest Houses in Chiang Mai

Top 10 Customer Rated Resorts in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Top 20 Highest Rated Hotels in Chiang Mai

In my own personal experience, there are several places that I have enjoyed tremendously. One such place is the Red Hibiscus Guesthouse, which had my favorite massage in Chiang Mai as well as bike rental for getting around the city.

A more luxury experience that still had that small guesthouse Chiang Mai feeling was at the Amata Lanna Chiangmai. The hotel was incredibly comfortable and had I not wanted to explore the city, I could have spent a week on the premises.

Amata Lanna, Chiang Mai

Parting Words

Once you’ve spent some time in Chiang Mai, it can start to feel like a second home. It’s for this exact reason that there is a quickly growing expat community and more people are visiting every year. The combination of a vibrant city life with a relaxed village feel is what makes Chiang Mai city one of the most welcoming places in Thailand and in the whole of Southeast Asia.

The secret is out about Thai cuisine and the country has quickly earned a spot as one of the top culinary travel destinations on the globe. So what better time could there be to visit than the 2012 Phuket Vegetarian Festival in October? Open to herbivores and carnivores alike, the “Tesagan Gin Je” is about much more than just food.

Start planning your trip here!

Vegetarian Festival, Phuket

Those hoping to sample a few tasty treats will find themselves drawn into an event that is punctuated with performances, parades, and other attractions. The Vegetarian Festival in Phuket is a celebration unlike any other, complete with a magical air where nearly anything is possible.

The Festival History

Although there are competing theories as to how the Phuket Vegetarian Festival came to be, there is one that is generally accepted more than others. The legend says that the festival in Thailand was first organized by a group of Chinese miners over 150 years ago. A Chinese opera troupe was imported to perform and the tradition was born. There are some definite connections with the Nine Emperor Gods Festival in China and it is thought that the event in Phuket is a response to that celebration.

The Nine Emperor Gods

Essentially, the Vegetarian Festival is all about cleansing and there are a list of commandments for how to behave during the festival dates. With that in mind, strict observers are dressed all in white and must abstain from alcohol, sex, and even using the same utensils as other people. For those following the food rules to the letter, all meat and meat products like dairy must be avoided as well.

What to Expect

As for what a traveler can see during the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, the best way to say it is simply to expect the unexpected. In addition to the food (more on that later), the main draw is the purification rites and ceremonies that take place over the course of 9 days and nights.

Face Piercing, Vegetarian Festival, Phuket

As part of the celebration, participants called “mah song” puncture their cheeks with everything, ranging from metal skewers to large bone knives and perform other acts of mutilation. This show of bravery is not for the faint of heart and a visitor can rest assured that trickling blood will be a common sight. The idea is that the Chinese gods protect the participants and that no scarring will occur.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

2012 Vegetarian Festival Dates and Schedule

This year, the 2012 Vegetarian Festival in Phuket will start on October 14 and the closing ceremonies will happen on October 24th. The following are the big events that will take place over the course of the festival:

October 14 – Lanterns are hung on poles at Chinese shrines in Phuket and fireworks announce the opening of the festival.

October 17 – Early in the morning, the piercing begins at around 6am and a procession goes from Phuket to the Sapam Shrine north of the city. A similar parade in the evening celebrates the gods of Birth and Death.

Face Piercing, Phuket Vegetarian Festival

October 18 – The trek to the Sam Kong Shrine will be filled with pierced cheeks as well as plenty of food stalls – a very strange mix.

October 19 – The participants will journey to the Tha Ruea Shrine on this day to coincide with the Heroines Festival.

October 20 – This is one of the big days. Big crowds will bear witness to several shrine processions as well as fire walking in the evening.

October 21 – In addition to the normal parades, there is also a spectacle at the Sam Kong Shrine where ladders with blades are climbed.

October 23 – The last full day of the Vegetarian festival has a lot of everything – fire walking, pierced cheeks, huge crowds, and tons of fireworks. The bridge crossing at Kathu Shrine is not to be missed.

October 24 – The closing of the festival is marked by the lowering of the lantern poles around 5pm.

The Food

Of course, no discussion about the Thai Vegetarian Festival would be complete without talking about the food. Meat options will still be available, but those wanting to take part in the vegetarian festivities should look for “gin je” options. Food stalls and restaurants that are following the festival guidelines will have a yellow flag posted with a red Thai character.

Yellow Flags, Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Another option is to get food straight from Chinese temples, which is offered for free, but a donation is expected. These simple meals will show just why Thai cuisine has earned its place on the map.

The Height of Phuket Luxury

A traveler should keep in mind that the 2012 Thai Vegetarian Festival will be a big event and reservations for top hotels should be made in advance. If a traveler wants to go all out for the event like I did a few years ago, then the Paresa Resort Phuket offers the ultimate in luxury. Located slightly outside of the main festivities areas, it can be the perfect solution for a quiet retreat amid the chaos of the celebration.

Paresa Resort Phuket

A Good Hotel at a Good Price

If getting a good value accommodation is more the booking goal, then there are tons of Phuket hotels with lots to offer. Among these, the one that stands out to me based on personal experience is the Avista Phuket Resort. Close enough to the center of the action, but with all the amenities of a full resort, I thought the rooms were the best per dollar that I’ve seen in the city. Book early as these medium-cost rooms will disappear quick.

Avista Phuket Resort

Budget Lodging

The other side of the accommodation coin in Phuket is that there are tons of cheap options for a person that simply wants a good place to stay and save money for enjoying the Vegetarian Festival more. One hotel that I’ve had considerable success with while traveling on a shoestring is the I Hostel. It’s unbelievable that just a couple dollars will buy a bed in this place, which is considered a meeting point for global travelers from every location imaginable. The outdoor patio is very pleasant and the central location in Phuket Town will ensure that the festival is never more than a few steps away.

Final Impression

The Vegetarian Festival in Phuket is an event that has to be seen to be believed. While the idea of cleansing and the city of Phuket don’t necessarily go hand in hand, the festivities bring the city together in a curious way. Visitors who go to the 2012 Thailand Vegetarian Festival are sure to put the event on their list of annual must-visit destinations.

Ahoy, Matey!

Formerly known as “The Pirate Island”, Bintan has gone through a huge development program and is now attracting pirates of a very different type. Its close location to the city of Singapore has seen marauding bankers, businessmen, and casual tourists make the golden shores their second home. In masses they flock to the newly-created Bintan Resorts to visit a growing selection of beachfront properties.

Start organizing your trip here!

Bintan Lagoon Resort

The rest of the island is also a potential destination, with sleepy fishing towns and adrenaline-pumping watersports seeming to go hand in hand.

Here’s what you should know if you’re planning a trip to Bintan Island.

Bintan’s History

It’s not a stretch to say that Bintan has had a difficult past. Because of its strategic location, the island has been a point of struggle and domination for many nations, including Portugal, Holland, the United Kingdom and several Arab countries. One of the results of this constant changing state of occupation is that there is a large Muslim community on the island, which may surprise some visitors.

Spices Sellers, Bintan

In the last 20 years, tourism development has been a high priority and the campaigns have worked well. It is estimated that more than 400,000 visitors come each year, with the vast majority coming from nearby Singapore.

Getting to Bintan

The island of Bintan can be reached by two main methods – boat and plane. From Singapore, a catamaran ferry to Bintan Resorts will take less than an hour while a trip to the capital of Tanjung Pinang will take almost double the time. Other ferries run to Malaysia, Sumatra, and a handful of other islands.

Bintan Ferry Terminal

The alternative choice is to fly in from other Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Batam, or the Natuna Islands. Island hopping is very possible and is a common method of transport for locals and travelers alike.

What to Do in Bintan

The places to visit in Bintan will largely depend on what type of vacation you want. If you plan on taking it easy and staying in Bintan Resorts, then there are plenty of activities. Four world-class golf courses have been created to meet demand and a wide array of recreational activities are on offer. For most though, a Bintan vacation will largely translate to basking in the sun and enjoying the spa.

Banyan Tree Resort, Bintan

If you have more of an adventurous streak, then getting out of the Bintan Resorts is probably your best option for having a good time. Tanjung Pinang can be challenging, but the urban setting is also home to some unique sights. The Buddhist Temple with an ornate sculpture park is definitely worth a visit. The same can be said about the cultural center, which often plays host to music and dance events and is where many festival celebrations take place.

The Trishaws, Tanjung Pinang

If tasting exotic foods is more up your alley, taking a day to visit Kijang could be the highlight of your Bintan trip. Mostly an abandoned mining town, the seafood on the beach is as good as anywhere else on the island, usually at a fraction of the price. This is true Indonesian food without any peddling to milder Western palettes. Be sure to try the gong-gong, a local type of mollusk.

Old Market at Boom, Kijang © vega vastu

The watersports scene is also quite big on Bintan, primarily in Trikora. While it does border Bintan Resorts, Trikora is a much less pretentious place and used to be the backpacker capital of the island. Nowadays, many younger visitors come to the shores of Trikora to try kite surfing, sport fishing, and snorkeling.

Trikora Water Sports, BIntan

The traditional Kelong constructions (water-based homes on stilts) are also common in Trikora and can be a great place to see them first-hand.

Kelong Construction

Shoppers will also discover that there are some choice goods to be found on the island. In particular, wooden crafts are a highlight and haggling can lead to an extremely discounted price. The same pieces can be found in either of the two malls at inflated prices, but the ones bought at market will be of a higher quality and better suited as a souvenir.

Hotels and Resorts in Bintan

3 star hotels in Bintan Island start from around $24 per night; check out hotel rates here!

As with many other southeast Asian destinations, Bintan offers the full range of accommodation options with every budget in mind. For a list of the top rated resorts in Bintan, check out our list: Top Rated Resorts in Bintan

At the top end of the spectrum, one of the best resorts on the island is the Banyu Biru Hotel. I was lucky enough to stay at this top-of-the-line resort and was amazed at their villas, which have every conceivable amenity. To my surprise, even the WiFi worked flawlessly throughout the property. In a place filled with resorts, the Banya Biru Hotel stands out as being exceptional.

Banyu Biru Villas, Bintan

If you fall under the category of a normal tourist, then some of the mid-ranged hotels may be a better fit for your wallet.

Even though they may be cheaper, many of these locations offer a surprisingly good stay with plenty of extras. One such place that I had the pleasure of visiting is the Bintan Cabana Beach Resort. The rooms are slightly above average, but the real specialty is the included breakfast which showcases traditional Indonesian cuisine as well as international favorites.

Bintan Cabana Beach Resort

Fortunately, sticking to a tight budget is easy, even if Bintan is mostly composed of resorts.

The Sentral Hotel ’98 is the absolute epitome for low-priced quality accommodation. When I stayed there, the price was less than $15 per night, allowing me to easily see as much of Tanjung Pinang and the rest of the island as I wanted. But don’t let the cheap price fool you. It also includes a completely adequate breakfast to boot.

Facts to Know

The official currency of the island is the Indonesian rupiah, but Bintan Resorts businesses will also accept Singapore dollars.

The Bintan Resorts area is separated from the rest of the island and you will need to cross a border-like checkpoint if you come by land.

Outside of Lagoi, English is not commonly spoken and having a phrasebook would be a good idea.

You may be required to pay a $10 visa fee upon entry to the country.

Bintan Island may not be the best known southeast Asian hotspot, but the numbers of visitors are growing quickly. As such, development is high and the traditional life is undergoing a radical change. Book a trip to Bintan now to see the best of both worlds before it’s too late.

Ever since the advent of life in the Asian continent, the land has hosted some of world’s greatest cultures, religions, and vast civilizations. The entire continent is packed with sites of such wealth and beauty. There are so many that one cannot fathom absorbing them all, even in ten lifetimes. At the same time, there are some places that give off the vibe of something akin to paradise and are a must in any serious traveler’s checklist.

Because of the great rivers and mountain ranges like the Himalayas, the entire continent can be considered nature’s molded attraction. There are still places that have not seen civilizations fall and rise, wars, plagues, destruction, and other human tragedies. These localities have remained unsoiled by man’s hands.

Start planning your trip here!

Mount Everest, Himalaya

There are wonders that will leave you speechless and teary-eyed by their staggering beauty and splendor – such is the impact of Asia’s wealth.

Miyako Island, Japan:

If you ever visit Japan, it’s important to get off the beaten track of cherry blossoms and the historical sites. Many visitors leave Japan ignorant to the loveliness of the Miyako Islands and never stumble upon the mixed culture and history of this gorgeous place.

Miyako Island

The islands lie southwest of Okinawa on a low plateau that rests above the deep sea. The surrounding coral reefs have a long history that dates back thousands of years. The island’s legendary status in Japan is supported by its dazzling white sand beaches and remarkable reef diving points. The mainland is connected with the island via two great bridges that are a sight unto themselves. Plan your trip to Miyako Island here.

Bali Islands, Indonesia:

Nearly every tourist wants to stumble upon a place that feels like a personal slice of heaven, but few of these places remain. However, a trip to the Bali Islands shows that it is still possible.

The Bali Islands in Indonesia are such a place, with hidden locations that make you feel as if you have found an abode away from the rest of humanity. Upon discovering one of these places, you would feel like you have discovered the very ebb and flow of untouched life.

Batukaru Royal Temple, Bali

The local Islanders have a legend that those who leave the beauty of the Bali feel a sense of profound sadness. Such is the impact of this scenery. Moving from north to south, Bali has active volcanoes as well as beaches covered with dark gray sand.
Ajanta and Ellora, India:

When you think of India, the most likely image that comes to mind is the famous Taj Mahal. The presence of this architectural wonder often distracts from other places that are equally spectacular. For any visitor to India, the splendor and history offered by the grandeur of the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora is unmatched. No wonder these monuments of architecture were designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Kailash Temple, Ellora

There are a total of 28-30 Ajanta caves that are spread across the area like hive cells. The caves are home to splendid works of art, many of which are hailed as pictorial masterpieces. The Ellora caves have an assortment of rock-cut sculptures, murals of the bodhisattva, Jatakas (the stories of Buddha’s past lives), and much more. Made by devout monks that spent entire monsoons in the caves, the monuments to Buddha show another side of Indian art. The distance between Ajanta and Ellora caves is about 100km.

The caves are located in the state of Maharashtra, near Aurangabad city.

Lake Saif–Ul-Muluk:

Despite the current intimidating conditions in the country, Pakistan is a place of magnificence. The culture is incredibly diverse and there are sights that will surely take your breath away. However, Lake Saif-Ul-Muluk is one particular place that is the stuff of fairy tales.

Very few locations anywhere in the world have such a tranquil aura or such a rich history of mesmerizing culture and tales surrounding its existence.

Named after the doomed lovers, Saif and Muluk, the lake was said to be made by the impact of a giant’s foot. The locals consider the lake a mark of beauty and preservation for the rugged mountain terrain that surrounds it. Very much like the locals themselves, the lake is like a soft spot on the hardness of the valley.

The region is famous for handicrafts and handmade items. Sheep rearing is common in the valley and often, a far sheep cry can be heard, breaking the quiet serenity of the lake itself. The placid waters are known by the locals as the “calm of Muluk”.

Lake Baikal, Russia:

Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Baikal lies in Southern Siberia and is one the oldest lakes known to man. In total volume, the lake is said to have more water than all the lakes of North America put together. The lake’s floating mist and semi-frozen surface presents a scene straight out of Mother Nature’s storybook.

Lake Baikal

Many tourists find that it is not only the bitter cold, but also the amazing beauty that literally takes their breath away. The exquisiteness of this frozen water entity is a sight unlike any other tourist destination in the world. A nice place to spend your vacation in the surroundings of Baikal lake is the popular Listvyanka Resort.

Ta Prom, Angkor Wat, Cambodia:

Not every tourist is a fan of looking at ancient temples. Sometimes, the average vacationer is searching more for what nature has to offer. However, there are places that are both. The Ta Prom is a living commentary of the interconnected relationship of man, architecture and nature. The current ruins are from one of the most ancient temples in existence and one cannot walk out of the temple without shivers running down their spine.

Ta Prom, Angkor Wat

The look and ambiance of the temple stays with a person long after they have exited the old grace of the ancient architecture. The site holds equal charm for tourists and historical site enthusiasts. Akin to the pyramids in their magnificence, a person does not need to be an archaeologist to appreciate their beauty.

The Gobi Desert, Mongolia:

Who says a beautiful place must be composed of lots of animals or pretty flowers? Those who truly understand the power of nature value the rough terrain as well. Nowhere is this rough terrain more present than the gorgeous sand dunes of the Gobi desert, standing within sight like sculpted forms.

Sunset on an old Chinese fortress in the Gobi Desert

The desert is almost completely untouched by man and remains an exciting avenue for adventurous types who can withstand the sharper end of nature’s beauty.

With its miles and miles of sand, the Gobi desert is the most open and raw form of scenery in the world.

The Valley of Flowers, Chaemoli Utaranchal:

The flowers in this valley are so diverse in color it is almost as if the entire valley was fed by rainbows. Now a National Park in the west of the Himalayan mountains, the valley of flowers is like a child’s imagination. The locals of the area believe that the flowers are so colorful because they are home to thousands of fairies. Looking at the valley gorge, it is hard to disagree with them.

The Valley-of-Flowers

Jiuzhaigou Valley, China:

The Jiuzhaigou Valley is a natural reserve in the province of Sichuan. Just like there is more to India than the Taj Mahal, China is much more than the Great Wall. As part of any Chinese travels, seeking out some of nature’s architecture will bring a surprising wealth of treasures.

Jiuzhaigou Valley

The valley is also called the “valley of nine villages,” partially due to the seven villages that are still inhabited. Jiuzhaigou is said to be in full allure during autumn. However, whichever season you plan to visit, the postcard quality of the images you gather will last a lifetime.

Lena Pillars, Siberia:

Along your travels, you’ve probably seen all manner of stones, but there is one type in Siberia that you haven’t seen. The Lena Pillars appear like frozen trees and were carved by nothing more than nature. These monuments are only found in eastern Siberia and are considered as a sight to behold during sunsets and sunrises. In 2012, The Lena Pillars National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The tree-like stones are also given the name of Yakutsk. The areas surrounding this marvel are thickened by forests and completely untouched by man. The pillars stand tall and proud like old wise men deep in reflection. The serenity and rough terrain knows no equal in solitude and beauty. Interaction with these pillars tests the limitations of logic itself. In comparison to this wonder, our imaginations are inadequate and feeble. If you want to plan a river cruise you can contact a travel service in the city of Yakutsk.

Lena Pillars

Along the warming sands, a full rainbow of colors merge delicately to perfectly match the tones in the setting sun. With the sound of the waves serving as a perfect backdrop, the wind plays with your hair and the grains of the beach massage your toes. Yes, it’s true. There is nothing in this world that can match the glorious beauty and relaxation of a shore line view.

Although you could be at any one of many beachfront destinations, this is the one you choose. It is Southeast Asia and there’s a reason it’s considered one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. At the edge of land and water, the vast expanse shows a curious side of nature’s grace.

Other than its mouth watering cuisine and cultural heritage, the region of Southeast Asia is also home to some of the best beaches in the world. The untouched natural beauty and pristine life are what draw visitors time and time again.

Here are some amazing places that make Southeast Asia the perfect place for water and sand.

Patong Beach – Phuket, Thailand:

Some beaches are a haven for snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, and sailing. The sublime beauty of the crescent shaped Patong beach on the famous “Puji Island” is one of the most visited beaches of the area, for good reason. The combination of the infamous Thai seafood cuisine and exciting seafaring activities hold something for everyone. Tired travelers can rejuvenate their spirits and those looking for action will find plenty of options.

In the Aklan Province, 345 km south of Manila, the world renowned Boracay Island rests. The postcard setting is what makes the island the perfect retreat. Over two hundred full-service resorts and hotels are located on or near the beach. Warm blue waters and the fine particle-like sand, added with the perfectly maintained conditions make the place akin to a slice of heaven.

Boracay is home to two main day-tripper beaches,

The “White beach” faces towards the west of the island. The adjoining line of the shore is surrounded by resorts, restaurants and tourist businesses.

The island offers an assortment of cuisine from a variation of countries like Japan, Korea, China, and even is host to experimental tastes for your bored taste buds. To be able to enjoy all this great things you can start from here!

Koh Kood, Thailand:

The commercial appeal of these gems of nature has translated to many development projects in Southeast Asia. However, the Ko Kut Island (also called the Ko Kood) in Thailand is one of the best, preserved, and unspoiled beaches of the region.

Koh Kood Beach

It can be a difficult place for some tourists to reach but others seek out the island for this very reason. The white sandy beaches and palm trees add to the relaxing atmosphere while the mountainous region offers a delightful hike for all adventurous types. The island also has a beautiful temple at the center and a southern lighthouse offers another tremendous view of the water. You may want to check out the hotel rates for this place!

Jimbaran Beach, Indonesia:

Situated in the striking Bali Island, the Jimbaran beach is famous for one of the most exhilarating views of the sunset. Though nearly all beaches offer a compelling sunset view, there is something quite unique about the sunset on this island. The skyline could be compared to the pastel work of a master artist.

Jimbaran Beach Sunset

The beach is also famous for locals who still practice the native fishing lifestyle. The culture of this island added with the splendid sunsets make this beach a rewarding experience for the any tourist. Start organizing your trip to Jimbaran Beach here!

Sanur Beach, Indonesia:

It may be one of the oldest beaches that houses resorts on the Bali Island, but Sanur Beach has maintained a reputation for peace and quiet. Coupled with an obvious romantic atmosphere, it can be said the island has an almost therapeutic touch to the senses. The island is located about six kilometers from the city of Denpasar and there are plenty of transport options.

Sanur Beach, Bali

The golf courses at the North end of the beach are a temptation for all enthusiasts of the sport. As opposed to many other beaches that are full of hustle and bustle, the beach of Sanur offers only the noise of the waves as a background. It is clearly the best destination in southeast for a tourist looking for solitude with nature. Check out some hotel rates from Sanur Beach here!

The world is full of destinations that are beautiful and home to exotic beaches. What sets apart the beaches spread across Southeast Asia is the lack of heavy development. Many of the beaches mentioned are part of islands that have seen little commercialization and retain an essential connection with nature. This makes them the best bet for your escape from the stress and agitation of urban life.

All cultures that have been established near water share a special connection with it. Therefore, the people of Thailand and water are knitted in a close bond. The emergence of agriculture brought even more respect for water and the tradition has remained part of Thai culture. To appease the gods that control the harvests, several festivals were created to pay homage to the relevant deities. In Thailand, water can bring both prosperity with bountiful crops and danger when the water channels rise. As such, these festivals and celebrations are an important part of Thai culture.

The Thai have an intensely diverse culture that has many festivals and religious ceremonies that retain the spirit and devotion of the Vedic times. Loy Krathong is one such festival that centers on water and also marks the celebration of the new lunar year.

What is Loi Krathong?

The word “Loi” (or “Loy” in Thai language) translates as “to float”, while the word “Krathong” points towards the tiny lotus shaped raft that floats on water. The Loi Krathong festival is not only a time for celebration – it also has great significance within the culture. The festival commemorates the start of the Thai lunar year. Many Thai consider the Krathong to be a good luck charm for the start of the new year. The floating raft also honors and extends thanks to “Phra Mae Khongkha” – the Thai water god.

For the modern Thai man, the festival has become a time to simply have fun and let loose. However, others take the event more seriously as it is also a ritual of letting go off the past. It’s an excellent opportunity to let go of one’s rancor, fury, and any grudges that may have built up over the past year. Some people will go so far as to add bits of their fingernails and hair to the Krathong as a representation of letting go of the bad parts of a person’s existence.

If you are a tourist, then make sure you visit the best places for the festival. Since the Loi Krathong commences on the sundown of the full moon of the 12th month in the Thai lunar calendar, it falls somewhere in November according to the western dates.

When is Loi Krathong Celebrated?

In the year 2012, Loi Krathong falls on November 28, and in 2013 on November 17.

Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai

Though the Loy Krathong celebrations take places all over Thailand, the best place to witness it is probably in Chiang Mai. In northern Thailand, the Loi Krathong festival is celebrated with exceptional zest. The people of Chiang Mai go all out with, adding enormous amounts of color and dances during this festival. The festival is also called “Yi Peng” or “the festival of lights” by the locals due to the large number of lanterns that are released in the sky.

Loi Krathong Festival Street Decorations, Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai sees the festival in full swing and more exuberant celebrators can be seen “coyote dancing” (a form of erotic dancing that originated in the nightclubs of Thailand) in the streets! There are a number of events in addition to the grand launch of lanterns that make the event a fest of color and memories.

You can read more about things to do in Chiang Mai, in our article: Chiang Mai: The Jewel of Northern Thailand

Khom Fai and Khom Khwan

The “Khom Fai,” also known as the “Khom Loy,” is a cylindrical paper lantern that is braced with circular wire rims for stability. Poised at the foot of the lamp is a tray containing cotton drenched in kerosene. The Thai adore fireworks and often the tray has a few crackers attached to them. As a common Thai saying goes, “always a pleasure to see the sparkled dragon spit and blow in the air”.

Within a minute of lighting the lantern, the glowing balloon elevates into the air where the fireworks can be seen by many.

Khom Fai, Loi Krathong Festival, Chian Mai

It is a common belief amidst the Thai of the north that launching a “Khom Fai” can send a person’s misfortune away into the air. Many people choose to say a prayer when the lantern is released. If the “Khom Fai” disappears from sight before the light goes out, it is considered that the prayer has been heard.

It is also a common practice for people to write their address in the balloon, or directly on the lantern itself. Anyone who then finds the address can claim a small reward from the sender. This is not meant to be a game, but rather a Thai tradition of sharing good fortune.

To the devout locals, the Khom Loy is a ritual to honor the Indic god that resides in the sky, “Phra Ged Kaew Ju La Manee”. The Khom Fai is a fire lantern while the Khom Khwan is a smoke lantern. These tiny floats of light are seen gracing the Chiang Mai sky throughout the festival.

Mae Jo lantern floating

In the north of the country, the Thai people not only float lights or “Krathong” in water channels but also in the sky to venerate the celebrations. The Thai are particular in all cultural celebrations and like to celebrate in a grand fashion whenever possible. The Mai Jo lantern launch is the best location in Chiang Mai to take part of the festivities. The beauty of all those lanterns transcending steadily towards the sky is a truly sublime moment.

Khom Fai, Mae Joe University

The event takes place at the rear of the “Mae Jo University”. It is advised to get there early to secure a comfortable place for witnessing the launch of the lanterns. The site is almost 13 kilometers outside of the locality.

Noppamas Queen

Beauty is also a synonym for Thai culture and shows up in many different manifestations. Vibrancy and beauty is what defines all Thai traditions. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the festival also brings an organized beauty contest with the highlight being the Krathong parade that features the contestants for the title of “Noppamas Queen”.

Noppamas Queen Festival

Legend has it that “Noppamas” was a consort of the King of Sukothai in the fourteenth century. According to the story, this woman fashioned the first Krathong out of banana leaves, shaped to look like a lotus flower, and offered it to her lover. The king then lit a candle, burned an incense stick, and let it drift in the river. Noppamas is considered a symbol of beauty and also as the starter of this tradition.

It is completely understandable for people who are booking places in a different country for the first time to make bad choices. Even seasoned travelers make this same mistake on a regular basis. Expensive hotels are certainly present, but there are cheap options with many of the same amenities.

A good hotel can be found, but only with the proper research. Instead of asking friends, turn to locals and ask them for their opinion. In addition, make sure to read online reviews at trusted travel sites to form a more accurate view of the hotel in question.

Pure luxury

Yes, indulgence can be a good thing once in a while. Too much wanderlust can quickly teach the value of great hotels and classy service. This dream-like accommodation is obviously not cheap and apart from the hefty price, it could include even additional charges. But, even the best of hotels in the city should have reasonable prices. If you have a short stay in Chiang Mai and are there to visit the festival, then opting for luxury may be a good choice to make the event more memorable.

Kodchasri Thani Hotel toes the line between expensive and manageable. The hotel offers classic service and a staff that goes out of its way to look after its guests. The hotel has a luxurious setting and is worth every dollar spent.

Kodchasri Thani Hotel, Chiang Mai

More time, less money

If you are in the mood to really experience the “festival of lights” and enjoy the celebration, then cut back on your accommodations budget. If you want to visit sites and temples, eat, and go through the whole “Thai experience,” then it is wiser to choose cheaper accommodation.

When I first came to the city, I couldn’t get enough of the splendor. To drink more from the beauty of Chiang Mai, I stayed longer and naturally, I had to manage accordingly. I stayed at Monn Phu Phrai a small, cozy, and very “Thai” place to stay.

The atmosphere and friendly service is in sync with traditional Thai hospitality and the location is beautiful. The ambiance is great for all tourists visiting Thailand for the first time.

As cheap as they come

I was running on a tight budget last year but I didn’t want to cancel my pilgrimage to Chiang Mai for the Krathong festival. I traveled on a low budget and managed to adjust accommodations because of this great and very cheap place I found. It wasn’t pure luxury or anything, but it was comfortable and the staff was great. Win Place Hotel Chiangmai was a great place. I loved the way they brought the Thai style of decorating to the interior, even though the exterior was something out of the past.

Parting thoughts

My trip to Chiang Mai was a bliss that kept me in a daze. I felt I could stare at the sky forever, afloat with thousands of lanterns. A person can just sit back and drink in the sight of the “Krathongs” floating lazily across the river bank as children raid them for coins. It is simply impossible to fathom the beauty in one visit alone. Even after so many trips, I find something new every time I return.

Ever stared at a colorful painting for too long? If you have than you must have realized that after a while you will start to see the splashes of colors that make up the painting. You would be able to differentiate between the immense shades and tonalities of the work.

This activity will bring you immense joy, it’s hard to say what instinctive pleasure a human being draws from unlocking the secrets of a painting but it is probably similar to the reaction a child has when faced with something unfamiliar.

Human beings travel to capture the essence of that long lost sensation of discovering new things. It is truly exhilarating when one is surrounded by a tirade of new experiences. A diverse range of flavors, colors and cultures will keep the spark in you alive. Nothing is quite full of wonder like a traveler’s eyes.

Start planning your trip to Bangkok here!

Bangkok; the land of smiles

Bangkok is a panorama of color and culture. Not much else in the entire world can compare to the beauty, traditions and life of this region. Thailand’s cultural capital is a truly “capital” place to see for all travelers. It is a place for peoplee who are willing to not only see and remember but make their trip a spiritual experience.

Get drunk on the exotic culture

There are very few cultures that literally live for life. The Thai have a zest, a flavor for living, that when whets the appetite, is hard to forget. The city rouses itself with bustling life and sleeps only to rejuvenate their spirits for another day of living. Bangkok mesmerizes the tourist and captivates his imagination. It offers smiles, fun and warmth.

Here is an amazing festival that will leave you tired, exhilarated and tickling with merriment.

Traditional Thai Dance

Live to eat!

The food, festivals and rich heritage makes the city a constant crowd of locals, tourists and monks. The equivalent of how are you in Thai is “Kin Khao rue yang?” (Have you eaten?) And boy, do you EAT! Your palette will never know a more diverse set of flavors as “Thai” cuisine. It is a blend just as potent as its culture. One can come to develop an addiction for it.

Songkran Festival

You may be wondering, when is the best time to visit Bangkok? Well, say no more! It is definitely during April when you can witness the epitome of the land’s culture, traditions and vibrancy.

Bangkok in April celebrates the coming of the “Songkran festival”. The festival can be regarded as one huge water fight. Do not underestimate this, you will be targeted and squirted upon once you venture out. The festival is an opportunity to witness an open display of joy, at getting someone soaking wet.

Songkran Festival, Bangkok

Songkran 2013 dates

In 2013, Songkran will be celebrated between Saturday, April 13, 2013 and Wednesday, April 17, 2013.

Significance of Songkran

The festival isn’t all fun and games but a serious event in the life of the Thai. The festival marks the beginning of a new year in Thailand. The word Songkran is the Thai interpretation of the Sanskrit word; saṃkrānti, it literally means “astrological passing”.

The event was originally calculated by the solar calendar and there was a different date every year. But, since the 1940 adoption of the “international new year day” the Songkran festival takes place from the 13th-15th of April, annually. The water throwing was once a simple act of blessing. All the members of the family, relatives and close neighbors would pour water on each other’s hands to mark a “cleansing” of the previous year’s misfortunes.

Songkran Tradition

Modern day ceremony

The act of cleansing is more fun in modern day Bangkok. The streets and malls are open while all offices and work shuts down during the festival. People are seen acting like children and splashing each other with water. The weapons range from hoses to squirt guns (Vouch for the hose when visiting). The fun is contagious and you can’t help but become a part of it. The Thai believe their ancestors wouldn’t mind as long as the cleansing ensued. But, it doesn’t hurt to see someone soaked from head to toe in the process.

Modern Songkran Festival, Bangkok

More merriment to go around

In the heat of April the festival provides the city with an opportunity to enjoy, celebrate and forget the scorching weather. Is there a way to avoid getting soaked? Well, no it is practically impossible to stay dry and get away with it during the Songkran festival. So, why not join the splash party? Just get the necessary arsenal (an extremely powerful water gun should be about right) and go to the scene where you can get soaked and also have the satisfaction of doing the soaking. (No need to wear make-up, nothing is THAT waterproof)

The best places for water fights are Kao San Road or Silom. Be warned the participants are mostly young and fairly ruthless. You will learn how dirty people can get in a fight that, ironically, involves so much water.

Songkran Festival on Kao San Road, Thailand

The traditional side of things

After the water gala you feel, despite the sudden splashes, bucket assails and sneak hose attacks from behind, a strange cleansing and calm. The Thai call it a “sensation of washing away everything and having a fresh start”. Despite your unfamiliarity with this concept, it is a given that you will feel the same way.

Change your clothes (probably wouldn’t need another wash, ever) and ladies don’t put make-up on (Yes, there is a fair chance that you will get wet, again) so that you can head over to the “Phra Pradaeng” district. It is here that you will find yourself a rather somber and beautiful Songkran.

This district houses the Thai-Raman communities who practice all those traditions that you were dying to see. Central Bangkok provides a platter of culture and fun activities. You will also get splashed here (aha! good thing you didn’t put that make-up on).

Songkran Festival, Bangkok

However, you can take pleasure in a display of cultural activities that don’t involve getting wet.

The family day of celebration

The second day of the Songkran festival is also the “National family day”. The city is bustling with early morning activities. Families can be witnessed giving alms to monks. A significant spiritual ceremony during Songkran is “Bathing the Buddha image”. During this ceremony religious Buddhists pour perfumed water over Buddha statues. This act is done both at temples and homes. Devout Buddhists would be seen practicing a variety of ceremonies and pious actions throughout Songkran.

Bathing the Buddha

The Songkran festival sees many people from the cities leave or their native homes. For the average Thai, quality family time seems to be the celebration of the day. For tourists, there are far too many festivities to see and memories to make.

It is great to know someone in Bangkok and impose on their hospitality and truly see how the Thai celebrate this grand festival. However, it is highly unlikely that every tourist can find a home to impose on. I mean seriously the hotels would go out of business.

There are great hotels that will give you great packages for your stay and provide the best seat for fireworks and the festival in general. I have been a guest to the festival twice and being the “warrior” at heart I wanted to stay in a place that offered the easiest access points to the water fights. I wanted payback for the last time I had gone unprepared! You may want to check out this cheap hotel near Khaosan Road: Nomads De Moc, Bangkok!

When you are in a mood to pamper yourself

I booked a room for three nights in the Pullman Bangkok Hotel on 188 Silom road (yes, I wanted to indulge myself too). I wanted to assure enough time to experience the festival and see the few things I had missed on my last trip. Though to the average person the hotel is luxurious and a little on the expensive side, it was worth every penny. The service was phenomenal and the free Wi-Fi gave me a good reason to tweet “amazing” and “loving it” every few hours or so. The hotel was what an expensive hotel is; it was gorgeous and almost too good to leave.

Pullman Bangkok Hotel G’s Scarlett-Wine-Bar-Restaurant

Comfort lesser dollars can buy

There are cheaper options as well obviously, which I would have preferred had I stayed longer. On my first trip to Bangkok (and falling in love with it) I stayed at a hotel a friend had recommended to me. It was not at all about lavishness but comfortable and had good service, It was Bann Sabai Rama IV Hotel. (Location: 106/2, Soi Sribumpen, Rama4 Rd., Tungmahamek, Silom / Sathorn, Bangkok) The hotel was convenient and provided good access to nearby festivities and markets. I must say it had a certain charm to it.

Budget, budget is what I was doing the first time round I went to Bangkok, though the Sabai Rama was cheaper it wasn’t too cheap and I had ended up staying a lot longer than I had originally anticipated. The reason was my enormous intake of food. I couldn’t get enough of it; I went on a food expedition almost daily and despite my system going into overdrive from all the spices, I went back with a vengeance every time. Sure, it caused the quick depletion of my money but I wasn’t concerned.

Too cheap to be true (tourist edition)

I didn’t notice the problem ’till I saw the last dollar in my wallet make its way on my plate. I never once thought about cutting back on the food expedition; rather, I chose to migrate to cheaper accommodations.

After I found a reasonably cheaper hotel; the Bangkok Loft Inn. I found myself in the shoes of the simple tourist. The place was great, though a little far from my water battle grounds but, the rates were remarkably reasonable and the breakfast was great.

Final impression

After my visit I was sure of one thing. Here alone, you can enrich your mind with enough visuals to last a life-time. I don’t think I will ever see color quite the same way after I witnessed the Songkran festival. Many of my definitions of beauty will always involve what I once saw in the magical land of Bangkok.

Everything we all love about Southeast Asia is a direct culmination of its rich history and heritage: the ancient temples, the warm cultures, the multi-national religions, the colorfully vivid traditions and the magnificent architecture that leaves us gaping! Southeast Asia, of all the lands on earth, is endowed with a beautiful heritage left behind by masters of architecture and masonry.

According to UNESCO, “Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritages are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.”

Sukhothai Historical Park, Thailand

In all my travels, I’ve never come across any place that has as rich a heritage as Southeast Asia seems to have!

Start planning your trip to Southeast Asia here.

Here are a few of my favorite historical attractions in Southeast Asia that you’ve simply got to check out for yourself.

Angkor, Cambodia

The Angkor Archaeological Park, home to Angkor Wat, is Southeast Asia’s biggest historical attraction, and is also one of the most important archaeological sites in the world today! This ancient city was a myth mentioned in tales of yore, until the reality was re-discovered in the late 19th century.

Angkor Wat Archaeological Park

Home to magnificent structures such as the Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, the Angkor Archaeological Park stretches over 400 kilometers and is the only representative of the largest pre-industrial city from the era of Khmer Empire. Read more about Angkor at Angkor Archaeological Park – a World Heritage Site.

If you’re heading to Angkor to see the biggest historical attraction in Southeast Asia, start planning your trip here!

Since there is no real accommodation in Angkor, tourists stay at Siem Reap which is a 6 kilometer distance from the park. Some great accommodation spots in Siem Reap are: Borei Angkor Resort and Spa, Prince D’Angkor Hotel and Spa, Sokha Angkor Resort and Moon Boutique Hotel!

Sukhothai, Thailand

Sukhothai Historical Park

Sukhothai, also known as the “Dawn of Happiness”, is a key heritage destination in Southeast Asia, based in the heart of Thailand. In its heyday in the 13th century, Sukhothai was a Tai Kingdom that ruled the land for two centuries, and formed what was to become the ancient capital of Thailand. If you’re on the search for the Holy Grail of history and culture in Southeast Asia, Sukhothai with its ancient ruins of majestic temples and a royal palace is where you need to head next!

The History of the Penang International Dragon Boat Racing Festival

The story behind this festival has made many a traveler listen in disbelief. The myth is: the history of the dragon boat race is tied to the Chinese poet Qu Yuan who committed suicide by drowning in the Miluo River. His friends paddled across the river in a bid to get his body back, whilst throwing rice into the waters to prevent the fish from attacking the body. Thus, the first dragon boat race was begun: albeit against time, not other boats!

Penang International Dragon Boat Race

This is said to have happened on the fifth day of the fifth Chinese lunar month, and is still celebrated today as the Duanwu Jie Festival.

The Penang International Dragon Boat Racing Festival Today

The beating drums, the teeming crowds, the colorful dragon boats, the electric excitement: this is what the Penang International Dragon Boat Racing Festival is all about today! Held at the Teluk Bahang Dam, the symbolism of the race is vividly denoted by the Chinese dragon, which happens to be a massive amalgamation of the head of an ox, the antlers of a deer, the mane of a horse and the tail of a fish all put together to create a thrillingly colorful and intense symbol of the dragon-boat race!

Dragon Boats, Penang

The Penang dragon boat race was first held in 1956, although it was only open to teams from within Malaysia. Today, this race attracts the big names in the dragon boat racing world, from China to the United States! If your team is a member of the International Dragon Boat Federation, you can opt to take part in this intensely competitive competition!

Each race has a maximum of twenty two participants, all of whom need to have strength, endurance and synchronized movements to win the ultimate prize! The paddlers face the front of the boat, facing the drummer who gives the paddling signal. It’s an electrifying sight, which is why this race is so popular today!

Penang Dragon Boat Racing
