Math Paper Press and editor Pooja Makhijani are seeking previously-unpublished personal essays and memoirs from new Singaporeans (naturalized citizens), residents (Permanent or otherwise), and native-born Singaporeans and “as told to” accounts for an anthology of English-language literary nonfiction to be published in early 2014, tentatively titled Altogether Elsewhere.

Singapore, a self-proclaimed nation of immigrants, has begun to reexamine its policies, values, and in essence, itself, by scrutinizing immigration. Altogether Elsewhere is about the changing face of a nation told through the personal geographies of some of its residents.

Altogether Elsewhere reflects on what it means to be “foreign” in Singapore in the twenty-first century. It attempts to answer, “What is ‘home’?”, given the ways in which labor, capital, and ideas transcend borders. And it aims to re-examine the terms “integration” and “assimilation” and “naturalization” in a wired society where one’s homeland is never too far away.

GUIDELINES:

Accounts should speak of histories—personal, communal, national. Submissions should be honest, entertaining, and well-written. They should possess a command of language, an elegance of style, and a subtlety of thought and perception. Do not be moralistic or preachy; aim for wisdom.

Submissions for this anthology fall into three categories. Essays can tackle the topics posed above (what it means to be “foreign” in Singapore, what is “home”, etc.) or begin at the prompts suggested below.

First-person essays or memoirs written by new Singaporeans (naturalized citizens) and residents (Permanent or otherwise). Submissions in this category can address: Why Singapore? What brought you here? Why have you chosen (or not chosen or had chosen for you) to stay? What is Singapore’s version of citizenship and/or of “welcoming migrants” and how have attitudes to migrants changed over time?

First person “as told to” accounts of new Singaporeans (naturalized citizens) or residents (Permanent or otherwise) who may not feel comfortable and/or be able to write their story in English (i.e. a grandparent from China, a caretaker from Indonesia, a nanny from Sri Lanka). Submissions in this category can address the questions posed in Category 1. Writers whose accounts are selected for publication will also be asked to provide a 250-word reflection on their relationship with their subject.

First-person essays or memoirs written by native-born Singaporeans. Submissions in this category can address: What is your personal geography? Why have you chosen (or not chosen or had chosen for you) to stay in Singapore? If you hold multiple passports, what roots you to Singapore? What is Singapore’s version of citizenship and/or of “welcoming migrants” and how have attitudes to migrants changed over time?

LENGTH

2,000 to 5,000 words, negotiable.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

September 30, 2013. Please consult William Shunn’s article on Proper Manuscript Format. Send your piece in .DOC format as an attachment, along with a 50-100 word biography, to altogetherelsewheresubmission@gmail.com; submissions sent in other formats or in the body of the email will be deleted unread.

PAYMENT

SG$100; two contributor copies; and a 40% author discount on additional copies.

Jaggery, a DesiLit arts and literature journal, connects South Asian diasporic writers and homeland writers; we also welcome non-South Asians with a deep and thoughtful connection to South Asian countries, who bring their own intersecting perspectives to the conversation. (By South Asia we mean Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.) Our hope with Jaggery is to create a journal that offers the best writing by and about South Asians and their diaspora. Dark, complex, intense — and totally delicious. For more information on the journal, visit: http://jaggerylit.com/

We publish ART, ESSAYS, FICTION, POETRY, REVIEWS, and an advice column. We prefer original, previously unpublished submissions; we solicit reprints only in exceptional cases. We accept simultaneous submissions, provided you let us know immediately if it is being published elsewhere. We’re purchasing ongoing worldwide digital rights, for use in web and possible downloaded forms (ebook, PDF, etc.). Six months after publication, you may request to have your work removed from our online archive. We follow a blind submission review process and pay $25 for prose/poetry/art.

The deadline for submissions for the inaugural issue is July 31st, 2013.

When you are ready to submit, please visit our submission system at https://jaggery.submittable.com/submit. Submittable will securely send Jaggery’s editors your work and e-mail you a confirmation that it has been received. Submittable will also allow you to include a short cover letter with your work; to facilitate our blind reading process, please omit the cover letter. If your piece is accepted, we will contact you to request a bio for publication. Once you have submitted your work, you can check the status of your submission by signing onto your Submittable account. We aim to respond to all submissions within three months.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

FICTION: Jaggery seeks engrossing, entertaining, and enlightening fiction from or about South Asia and its diasporas. We wish to showcase fiction that moves minds and hearts, that takes risks in shedding new light on our lives, and is a pleasure to read and reread, from both emerging and established voices. We accept all types of stories, including excerpts from longer pieces. An excerpt should, however, stand alone as a complete work. We strongly prefer stories under 5000 words, but will consider longer pieces. There is no minimum length requirement. Payment is $25 / piece.

ESSAYS: Non-fiction contributions are invited for publication in Jaggery. Publishable pieces consider the changing, dynamic nature of South Asian society as reflected in its literature and other cultural productions such as art, film, and theatre, as well as more experimental genres and installations. We welcome innovative writing that finds new ways to see traditional issues. We are interested in reflections on identity and process, as well as contemporary ethical, spatial, or social concerns. We encourage an inter-disciplinary approach to cultural productions, reflecting the eclectic ways in which South Asia can be viewed: opinion pieces, literary criticism, interviews, editorial journalism, travel writing, memoir, and creative non-fiction. WORD LIMIT : 1000 – 5000 words. Payment is $25 / piece.

POETRY: Jaggery seeks poems inspired by South Asia and its diaspora that challenge, celebrate, ruminate, and advocate. Poets submitting pieces for consideration need not identify as South Asian or South Asian hyphenates; however, the poems submitted should. Jaggery welcomes original unpublished poems as well as translations of poems written in South Asian languages. SUB LIMIT: 3 poems (10 pages maximum total). Payment is $25 / piece.

REVIEWS: Jaggery solicits reviews of books on a wide range of subjects pertaining to South Asians, South Asia and South Asian diasporas. We seek fair and unbiased reviews of academic/popular-cultural books (creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry), film, music, and theater. Each review should be addressed to the general reader and should include a description of contents and a critical appraisal. WORD LIMIT: 1000 words. Payment is $25 / piece.

Talk about your love for the city of memories. Delhi belongs to everyone who lives in it, but no one belongs to Delhi- is this how we see this city?

Poets Printery, a publishing house based at East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa is planning to bring out an anthology of poems and invites women based in Delhi to pour out their fascination for the city in the form of poetry. To reveal the undying and relentless, razed and raging, crazed and craving, old and ageless, Hindu, Islamic, Sikh and in equal measure sufi and atheist soul or the spirit of Delhi.

A city revealed, is a personality understood: it is this relationship with Delhi which we at Poets Printery seek to look into and as an editor I am looking forward to reading your work.

Our History, Our Lives, Our Narratives…

We’re glad to announce the launch of an exciting new project by Pink Pages. Titled “Different, But Equal”, we’re publishing a first of its kind anthology that chronicles the historical and cultural evolution of India’s queer community and its struggle for legal and social rights. Given the lack of similar comprehensive literature, we feel it’ll be a significant contribution to the genre of modern Indian writing.

ABOUT THE ANTHOLOGY:

We’re inviting articles in the non-fiction category from diverse sections of the Indian queer community- activists, lawyers, artists, students, or just common queer men and women- who have a story to tell. The articles are divided into three broad segments-

Identity – Writings on modern Indian queer identity- What it means to be LGBTI in a rapidly changing democracy, where old world socialism is being fast abandoned for fast paced capitalism, where the flood gates of globalization have been opened making way for hitherto western ideas of ‘individual identity’ to clash with the holy cows of family and religious values.

Culture – Writings on popular Indian gay culture- from films, music and literature; to the evolution of urban gay and lesbian sub-cultures, encompassing language, art and expression in the Indian context.

Politics – Manifestation of gender and queer issues in Indian society and their implications on national and regional politics, legislations, legal jurisdictions and in Government/Non-Government and Corporate organizations, especially in the context of the legal struggle against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

WHO CAN CONTRIBUTE?

This anthology will feature both well-known and not so well-known voices from the Indian queer community, in order to make sure readers get a flavor of fresh ideas from the younger generation, besides the fascinating narratives and experiences of the more prominent activists.

Contribution to this anthology is by open, so please feel free to suggest names who would add value to the collection.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE?

It’s fairly simple- just send an initial draft to anthology@pink-pages.co.in by 30th June, clearly mentioning the category under which you’re submitting. There is no word limit for the entries. After drawing up the shortlisted entries, our Editorial Board will work with you, in case there is need for editing it for final publication. We will also need a short bio of yours to go along with the article.

WHAT DO WRITERS GET?

Besides getting a chance to be published alongside some well known names in the Indian LGBT movement, and being able to voice your thoughts to readers across India and the world, all contributors will also be given a cash amount of Rs 1000, two free copies of the published book, and a surprise gift from the Pink Pages team.

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES:

For Tanka

“In form, technique, and subject matter, the modern English-language tanka shows wide variation and invention and appears disinclined to observe any rigid set of “rules” or conventions”
– Michael McClintock

Tanka is deeply grounded in concrete images, and also is laden with lyrical intensity and musicality.
It would be good to see your poem in s/l/s/l/l format, but we are not very particular about syllable count, as long as the poem comes together in a nice way to make it memorable for your reader.
A few examples of what we are looking for:

I’ve this memory–
riding my father’s shoulders
into the ocean,
the poetry of things
before I could speak – Michael McClintock

moonbathing
this autumn eve
my body
and mind float free
in a river of stars – Karen Ceser

For Haiku

Haiku is not a shriek, a howl, a sigh, or a yawn; rather, it is the deep breath of life.
-Santoka Taneda

One to four lines, no strict syllable count, but do be brief. Seasonality is appreciated but not compulsory. Your poem should come together as a work of art, unity and resonance being integral to it.

A few examples of what we are looking for:

between the sky
and the spin of the earth
this falling leaf -Laryalee Fraser

migrating geese —
the things we thought we needed
darken the garage – Chad Lee Robinson

temple path
the dust i kick up
sticks to me – Ed Markowski

When composing a verse let there not be a hair’s breadth separating your mind from what you write; composition of a poem must be done in an instant, like a woodcutter felling a huge tree or a swordsman leaping at a dangerous enemy.
-Matsuo Basho

AWARDS:

Long poems:

A NOTE ON DR. SAROJINI SAHOO:

Well known for her frankness, Dr. Sarojini Sahoo is a prime figure and trendsetter of feminism in contemporary Oriya literature. For her, feminism is not a gender problem or any confrontational attack on male hegemony. She accepts feminism as a total entity of female hood, which is completely separate from the man's world. She has an avant-garde idea in feminism. Kindle magazine from Kolkata, has enlisted her name among 25 exceptional women of India in its March 2010 Issue (http://www.scribd.com/doc/27460652/Kindle-Small-Book-56-Pages-240210).

She writes with a greater consciousness of women’s bodies, which would create a more honest and appropriate style of openness, fragmentation and non-linearity. Her fictions always project a feminine sensibility from puberty to menopause. The feminine feelings like restrictions in adolescence, pregnancy, fear factors like being raped or being condemned by society and the concept of a bad girl etc. always have thematic exposure in her novels and short stories.

She writes her critical appraisals in English and her creative stuff in Odia. Sensible Sensuality (ISBN: 978-81-7273-541-8) is her famous collection of essays published by Authorspress, New Delhi. Her other works including novels and short stories in English are as follows: The Dark Abode (2008) (ISBN 978-81-906956-2-6), English translation of her Odia novel Gambhiri Ghara has gained a reputation for its feminist outlook and sexual frankness. The novel has also been published from Bangladesh in Bengali as Mithya Gerosthali (2007) (ISBN 984 404 287-9). Prameela K. P. has translated this novel into Malayalam and has been published as Irunda Koodaram by Chintha Publishers, Thiruvanthapuram. Rajpal & Sons, Delhi has published its Hindi version as Band Kamra (ISBN 978-81-7028-954-8). Besides her two short stories collections in English, such as: Sarojini Sahoo Stories (2006) (ISBN 81-89040-26-X) and Waiting for Manna (2008) (ISBN 978-81-906956-0-2), she has published a bunch of short stories at her blogScent of Own Ink at:
I will request Dr. Sahoo to make the material available to him/her.

The transferability of objects, images, landscapes and memories shapes much of our lived experiences in the presents that we inhabit. Monuments and streets–early symbols of permanence, constancy, and rootedness–have now taken on dimensions of flux and mutation. They journey with us and change with our changes. Our visual and verbal stories simultaneously monumentalise and shatter them. Our art(ifice) takes them away from where-they-were to where-they-are-now. Worlds shapeshift in a virtuality of post-processing and persistent reinvention.

The reincarnated Captain Cook in Margaret Atwood’s poem dreams of ‘a land cleaned of geographies’. The ungendered protagonist–in order to effectively claim the risk of rediscovery–desires an unmapped world: a world that is not bound within the fixities of time, space, body, and self. However, one can never be sure if this is possible. To figure out the tropes of this anxiety, The Four Quarters Magazine will try to trace the questions of mapping and unmapping, location and its lack, direction vs. destruction, variable spatiality, shifting things and events, altering structures, constructs of architecture, and flâneuring selves in its forthcoming issue: Portable Monuments, Wandering Streets.

We invite submissions of prose, poetry and artwork for this issue of The Four Quarters Magazine. Book reviews and translations are also welcome. Only emailed submissions will be considered. All submissions must be sent as word documents attached to the email. If it is artwork that you are sending us, then please do take care to attach a covering word file with details about the submission. For other details regarding submissions, please take a look at our submissions page. Please donot send submissions at fourquartersmagazine@gmail.com. This email address should only be used for general query.

The deadline for submissions is 3rd June 2013. The guest editor for this issue is Nitoo Das. General editors for the magazine are Arjun Chaudhuri, Arjun Rajendran and Samyak Ghosh.

“Two powers preside, one male, one female; and in the man’s brain, the man predominates over the woman and in the woman’s brain, the woman predominates over the man. The normal and comfortable state of being is when the two live in harmony together, spiritually cooperating.”

- Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own (1922).

As Carl Jung adequately put it, “animus is within women as their repressed masculinity and anima is within male as their repressed femininity.” A classic, enduring example of this is the titular deity Ardhanarishvara, symbolising the amalgamation of Shiva and Parvait, the masculine and feminine energies of the universe, and demonstrating how the latter is inseparable from the former. This androgynous principle may also be located in the works of Virginia Woolf, a Modernist for whom androgyny serves as a metaphor to indicate acumen that is luminous, creative, and unconstrained by parochialism and grievances: for her, a purely feminine or purely masculine mind cannot create or generate a great work of art, a truly incandescent mind being one which is not limited by narrow prejudices.

Of course, far more than in so-called canonical or high culture, gender is being redefined – gender bending as it is known – in what is called popular culture. From the early 1920s, figures like Louise Brooks have been seen as popularising themselves as flappers by virtue of their bobbed haircuts and raw sexuality. Throughout the twentieth century, performance artists like Annie Lennox, Michael Jackson and Boy George have, through their works and the sheer preponderance of their persona, fused the masculine with the feminine in ways which have given an unsurprising leeway to the androgynous in contemporary urban vocabulary. In our own times, the likes of Justin Bieber and Kailash Kher – allowing for the injustice of this medley – too may be seen as gender bending in interesting and insightful ways.

Ultimately, it is this sense of bending, of fusion, which this issue of Literophile is interested in. For Issue 2, Volume 6, we invite original and annotated papers and/or semi-academic articles and commentaries of not more than 3,000 words on androgyny in literature and the performative arts in the century past and present by the 15th of July, 2013. Submissions, which must be mailed in MS word format to literophile@gmail.com, may focus on, but need not be limited to, the following:

Androgyny and Bi: convergences, if any

Androgyny as (literary and/or performative) narrative technique

Ardhanarishvara: myth and comics

Androgyny: third gender?

“Baby, baby, baby ohh!”

Cross-dressing and Comedy Circus: androgyny and typecast

Male gaze: gay = feminine ≠ androgynous?

Please note that papers must be annotated in accordance with MLA regulations. Contributors must also submit short bio-notes – not more than 300 words – along with submissions. Contributors will be intimated by last week of July regarding acceptance/rejection.
