Watch the links while you can. Some movies, especially decent English-subbed ones, are hard to find. Once the links are taken down, you might not see the movie again for a very long time, if ever.

10 Asian Horror Films that Feature LGBT Characters or Themes

The horror genre is where moviemakers will attempt to make you squirm in your seat. Although most people would assume this means seeing some type of ghost, monster or other non-living or non-human life form, the movie does not really have to. By Wikipedia’s definition, it could be anything that evokes the viewer’s fear. This means it could be anything that is considered out of the ordinary or what is considered mainstream.

Depending on where you are from, this most probably includes fearing the gay community. There is a saying which goes something like, “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” giving the impression that LGBT people are some form of aberration. Essentially, what they are saying is LGBT = horror. Following that line of thought, it is surprising there are not a whole lot of Asian horror films that utilize LGBT characters or more decent themes. In half of the movies listed here, the gays are presented in comedic form. It is possible that moviemakers are trying to introduce the concept of gay ghosts/characters without alienating more viewers. Here are 10 Asian horror movies that feature cross dressers, drag queens, lesbian ghosts, gay zombies or a similar underlying theme.

1. The Wig aka Scary Hair (South Korea)

Su-hyeon is fighting a losing battle against cancer. As a result of therapy, her hair has already begun to fall out. Her older sister Ji-hyeon buys her a wig to make her feel better. Little do they know that the wig is possessed by a spirit, a gay man who used to date Ji-hyeon’s boyfriend.

2. The Victim – (Thailand)

Ting is an aspiring actress who is hired by the local police to play the victim in various crime reenactments. In one case, Ting is haunted by the spirit of Meen, a murdered former beauty queen. Meen helps Ting find her killer. In an interesting twist, we later find out Ting is actually a film character played by May. During the filming, May is possessed by a transgendered movie fan.

3. Whispering Corridors (South Korea)

Whispering Corridors consist of a series of films beginning 1998. Each one is set in an all-girls high school. The movies feature themes of friendship, treachery and how the school community views lesbian relationships.

4. Haunting Me (Thailand)

Four aging drag queens are running a boys dormitory. The ghosts of two murdered teens begin haunting the dormitory, forcing the “women” to help the ghosts find peace.

5. Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington (Philippines)

As a boy, Remington made fun of gay people. One day, a gay man places a curse on him, which turns him into a gay man once he reaches adulthood. True to his word, Remington began noticing signs that he is becoming a gay man against his will before his 21^st birthday. During this time, a serial killer is also running loose in the village and targeting gay people. There are also gay zombies causing mayhem. Will Remington be the next victim of the gay killer or will the rampaging gay zombies get to him first?

6. Pee Toom Tim (Thailand)

Rada is a professional goalkeeper aiming to qualify for the World Cup. He gets injured during a match and his spirit is replaced with that of Ming, a gay ghost. The hell god (Devil?) makes Ming perform a variety of tasks before Rada manages to get back to his body.

7. Ghost 2010 aka Be With Me (South Korea)

Ghost 2010 consists of three stories of three young girls in high school. Each meets a mysterious tarot card reader who tells them to perform a chant to reveal their fortunes. The second story, Attached, is of particular interest. So-Young and Nam-Hee are the best of friends and among the brightest of their batch. They are both offered a chance to get a recommendation from the principal to help them get into college. Nam-Hee reveals to So-Young that she is pregnant. So-Young encourages Nam-Hee to keep the baby and that they will raise the child together, assuming the role of dad. Although she makes a promise to Nam-Hee, So-Young also hatches up a plan to get the recommendation for herself.

8. Hor Taew Taek Haek Krajerng aka Oh My Ghosts! (Thailand)

Three gay brothers run a boys dormitory that is being haunted by a spirit. They fight back by hiring their own. An ensuing chaos erupts when they can no longer control the situation.

9. Tropical Malady (Thailand)

This movie features an interesting mix of fantasy, romance and horror. The story is split into two parts: the first showing the romance between two gay men while the second is a tale of a soldier that becomes lost in the forest and comes across a shape-shifting shaman.

10. Ghost Station (Thailand)

The movie was produced as a comic spoof of the movie Brokeback Mountain. In this movie, Yai and Udd are a gay couple who move to the countryside. They plan to put up a business in a gas station which is haunted by a ghost.

Unborn but Forgotten Review

A haunted website kills women within 15 days of viewing it. It is up to a video journalist and a cyberspace crime detective to find out why before it kills more women.

Basically, I did not enjoy watching this movie. The plot was way too simple and the characters did not seem believable. Some of the characters also exhibited conflicting aspects in their personalities. For instance, Detective Choi at one point indirectly states that he does not believe in spirits as there is no proof that they exist. However, at the beginning of the film, he does nothing to console Soo-jin and just lets her believe that it is a haunted website and that it will kill her in 15 days.

Soo-jin is not credible as a video journalist either. The moment Detective Choi tells her that all the women accessed the website before they died, she automatically assumes it is haunted and that she will die as well. There are a lot of scenes which just show her crying, feeling scared. She just appears so helpless throughout the film.

Revealing Ei-suk as the killer did not come as much of a surprise either. His reaction to seeing the apartment was a dead giveaway. I thought there would be more of a twist somewhere but there was not any.

The movie missed a lot of opportunities to scare the audience. You would see a few short moments showing the ghost’s leg and some blood dripping from the scene but it ends right there. There was nothing in the movie that would make you jump from your seat. One thing I did like was how the doll slowly opened its eyes. It was not totally scary but it was a good effect.

Another fatal flaw was that they would introduce elements that did not seem to connect with other parts of the film. For instance, the ending features the detective with a girl who asks him for a drink. LetMeScareU explains that the detective was actually the father of rampaging ghost's child. The anchorman just played the role as the murderer. It does somewhat explain why Yoo-shil would choose to use a website to haunt and kill women. I initially thought the detective had relationship with the girl in the purple dress. This would explain why he avoided answering Soo-jin's questions about the girl on his computer monitor. Then again, he did not flinch when the girl in the purple dress was being autopsied nor did detective react when he saw Yoo-shil’s painting at the apartment. Detective Choi must have been drinking really hard not to remember either of these women.

All in all, it was okay. It is not the worst Asian horror film I have seen thus far although the film made me scratch my head a few times.

I was trying to do some research on comic books, manga or graphic novels about Asian horror. My initial impression was that the two-dimensional graphics on a typical comic book would not be able to do justice on what makes Asian horror movies fascinating and scary to watch. Try these selections and decide for yourself whether such literature can be considered as scary as Asian horror films.

This particular web comic is Mervin Malonzo’s masterpiece, an artist hailing from the Philippines. It tells the story of the origins of the first aswang and its evolution from the Spanish period to more modern times. The artwork is both gruesome yet amazingly detailed. It has a free online version written in Tagalog although you can still get a gist of the story without reading the descriptions.An English ebook version is also available for purchase thru Flipreads, Amazon or Apple iBookstore. The web comic should not be confused with the Filipino movie Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang.

Tabi Po

This Japanese manga may give you enough reason to fear geeks. Death Note is a popular manga and anime about a high school student known as Light Yagami who finds a notebook that gives him the power to decide who dies, when the person dies and even detail the specifics of how the person meets his doom. It is not considered a horror type of literature as it does not feature any ghosts or goblins. There is a shinigami or death god involved although his role is more of an amused deity that does what he is told. What makes it unnerving is the ruthlessness of Light as he gains control of Japan and manages to hide his true identity for years. If the link does not work, a simple Google search will give you various other leads.

Death Note

Released in 2011, this particular webtoon has become an Internet sensation and with ample reason. Try a search on Google, YouTube and other forums and you will find countless readers that have admitted to screaming like little girls after watching or reading this short webtoon. The story is said to be based on eyewitness reports of a woman who committed suicide after losing a custody battle over her child. As indicated on the website, viewer discretion is advised. I discourage pregnant women and people with a heart problem from watching the Asian horror cartoon.

10 Things to Turn Your Life into an Asian Horror Movie

Park Cooper posted an interesting article on How to Survive an Asian Horror Movie. It is a fun read if you have seen a lot of Asian horror films already. Here is my take on the topic. Most are based on Cooper’s post although some are my own ideas. Create your very own Asian horror movie by doing the following. Enjoy!

Living near any body of water. It does not matter whether it is as large as a lake, the ocean or your bathroom sink or bathtub. Expect to find ghosts climbing out of it in the form of displaced body hair. Whether they come out of the potty is still debatable. I am not sure whether ghosts like coming out smelling like poop or it could be part of the whole scare tactic: killing through stench.
Owning any electronic device. Whether it is a decades old television set with a Betamax or VHS player or the latest mobile phone, they are as vulnerable to being possessed by a spirit as any living person. No more surfing the Internet either. You could accidentally access a site that encourages you to commit suicide or kill another person. Wait, that actually happens in real life doesn’t it?
Having long hair. If you’re a woman with long hair, you are screwed. Most women with long hair in Asian horror movies are either the ghost or the person being haunted by one.
Working for law enforcement, breaking the law or both. The men usually have some connection with law enforcement – current or former cops, secret service agents, detectives and the like. Or they could be running from the law themselves - current or former drug addicts, serial killers and so on.
Being near any reflective surface. This includes windows, glass panes, handheld mirrors and more. According to Cooper, you are in even greater danger when being near video cameras. The ghosts know what you look like and where you live. No more photos for you then lest you want to see warped images of yourself before you die.
Having a friend or partner that’s too loyal. ‘Til death do us part apparently has no bearing in Asia. It doesn’t matter whether you were the person’s best friend or a total jerk, your friend or partner could come after you after they’ve passed on. On the other hand, there is the remote possibility that you could get your dead best friend or partner to do your bidding. Death Note, anyone?
Being shy. Socialize people! Being too shy is not a good thing. You get attached to one person too much. You and your friend/partner should meet and hang out with different people from time to time. At least if one of you dies, you don’t go seeking revenge for past grievances.
Being nosy. Be friendly but mind your own business. Knowing too much can get you a lot of attention from the spirits. That is unless if you’re doomed to die soon or get into deeper trouble. If that is the case then investigate until you find a cure or pass the curse on to millions of people.
Senior year in high school. This normally happens in Japan and Korea. If your teenage life is not stressful enough already, you have your parents, classmates, teachers and pretty much the entire school population egging you to be the best or possibly kill the competition. Ask your parents to get you out of the country for at least a year to save you the stress.
Calling on the spirits. You have no clue on what you are doing. For some strange reason, somebody in your family does but won’t tell you how to do it properly. If it’s not a relative, it’s usually somebody who lives near your house.

Asian Horror Movie Review

*Warning: includes spoilers*

The opening scene of this particular Asian horror movie is interesting. It starts up with a front view of the car casually driving along a street. There is light snow falling. You have a soothing mix of background music. Look up a bit and you see a pair of bluish white lights around the rear-view mirror which look like two menacing eyes. This particular scene continues for some time. You see what is going on by the road but you do not get to see the driver’s face. Combine all of these elements together and you get a calm but eerie scenario. The predator is looking for his next prey.

Slow panning or zooming with serene music playing in the background coupled with shots of graphic violence. You will see a lot of those on this film. What grabs your attention is that the two main characters are devoid of feeling, one since birth while the other borne out of a sense of duty. Both men can dish out and take in pain. It is crude violence artistically shot all the way to the end.

This is not a film that should be watched by people with a weak stomach. For those that do have a stomach for it, be prepared for some gut-wrenchingly good Asian horror.

Merchandise Inspired by Sadako 3D

Sadako is alive and well 14 years after she first emerged out of a well in Japan. A number of Asian horror movie fans have even been graced by her presence at a recent baseball game where Sadako herself threw the first pitch. This is all part of the ongoing promotion for the upcoming Sadako 3D movie which is opening on May 12.

If that is not enough, Asian horror movie fans can now get their hands on a number of Sadako - inspired merchandise. These will be sold in various stores in Japan in time for the film’s opening. For most Asian horror movie fans around the world, you just simply have to wait for the items to appear on eBay. If you are lucky enough to be in Japan from mid July onwards, check out Sega’s version of the movie. The video game developer is planning to open a ride based on the newest Ring film on July 14.

Film Festivals that Feature Asian Horror Movies

Watching horror movies is no longer a past time limited to Halloween or other similar events that pay tribute to the dead. There are plenty of events related to horror films and there are a few which are solely dedicated to Asian horror films. The percentage of horror fans that enjoy Asian horror movies is still quite small although growing. Here are a few of the larger events and film festivals that feature Asian horror films all around the world.

Kanazawa Film Festival (Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan)

This yearly event first started in 2007. According to a vague Google translation, the first event consisted of a talk which featured Toby Hooper, the director of the cult classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A few months after the talk, in September 2007, the Film Society of Kanazawa organized its first week-long festival featuring different shorts including Japanese horror. Certain movies and talks are shown at the 21^st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The festival also seems to have an outdoor setup which travels to different areas of Japan. This particular Asian horror movie event is now celebrated each September. For more details, check out the Kanazawa Film Festival. A Night of Horror International Film Festival (Sydney Australia)
Fantastic Planet Film Festival (Annandale and Newtown, Australia)
Fantastic Asia Film Festival (Melbourne, Australia)

These are three Australian festivals feature some examples of Asian horror films. Fantastic Planet showcases sci-fi, fantasy and horror films from around the world. A Night of Horror is more limited to international horror films while Fantastic Asia features a variety of Asian films including Asian horror films.

Japanese Film Festival (Singapore)

This Singaporean film festival pays tribute to various forms of Japanese cinema. It is a yearly event which first started in 1999. Each year, the festival releases a theme and selects a number of films which showcases that theme. Back in 2009, the festival featured a variety of Asian horror films from Japan including Rampo Noir and Strange Circus. Up until 2007, the 9 to 10 day long festival was commonly held sometime between the September and October. From 2008-2010, it was in August while in 2011, the festival was held in April.

Puchon International Fantastic Films Festival (Bucheon, South Korea)

The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) is an annual event which features horror thriller, fantasy and mystery films from around the world. It has been featuring Asian horror movies and films from other genres since 1997. The event is commonly held in July.

Real Fantastic Film Festival (South Korea)

A clash between former PiFan members prompted the creation of Real Fantastic Film Festival (RealFanta) in 2005. Similar to PiFan, RealFanta showcases the same types of film. Currently, the English version of the site is not functioning. You will need to access Google Translate to read the website.

Sentosa Spooktacular (Singapore)

Sentosa is a popular tourist resort in Singapore filled with different types of entertainment for guests of all ages. During the last days of October, a part of the resort is setup to showcase some of the more prevalent Asian myths. The festival is referred to as Sentosa Spectacular. One of the six trails features a 4D cinema where visitors can watch a number of Asian horror films.

Toronto After Dark (Toronto, Canada)

The Toronto After Dark Film Festival has been garnering a lot of attention from horror fans around the globe. Its 2011 event is said to have gathered more than 10,000 film fanatics with more than 100 press people. The annual festival features new, independent films in various genres including action, sci-fi, horror and cult. As most of these films are independent types or made with a smaller budget than those produced by Hollywood, fans get to see films that may not make it to the big screen or be the first witnesses before the flicks garner worldwide attention.

Indonesia International Fantastic Film Festival (Jakarta and Bandung, Indonesia)

This unique film festival from Indonesia features sci-fi, fantasy, horror and thriller films from around the world. Participants get a chance to meet and talk to a few of the filmmakers that visit the festival. There is also a filmmaking session involved during the event. What makes this particular festival unique is that attending the event is free. Seats are limited so interested fans will need to register as soon as possible.

Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival (Toronto, Canada)

Reel Asian is said to be one of the smaller community festivals in Toronto. The non-profit organization organizes 6 days filled with screenings, galas, workshops and forums among others. Some of the Asian horror movies featured here include Yanggaw (Philippines), When the Full Moon Rises (Malaysia) and A Tale of Two Sisters (South Korea).

San Diego Asian Film Festival (California, USA)

The San Diego Asian Film Festival is one of the larger programs organized by the San Diego Film Foundation. It features films, shorts and documentaries from various parts of Asia. Some of the more recent Asian horror movies showcased in the festival include Hello Ghost (South Korea).

New York Asian Film Festival (New York City, USA)

This particular festival is well known for featuring a great variety of Asian horror movies. Some of the more popular movies screened during the festival include Man from Nowhere (South Korea), Bedevilled (South Korea), and Battle Royale (Japan). The two-week long festival is held during July.

Asian Horror Movie Review

A lot of people have been recommending this as a good Asian horror movie to watch. It has an interesting story but not a lot of the chills that I expected. If you are an avid fan of Asian horror movies, it is a classic film you should try to watch at least once.

What I liked about the movie is the camera shots. The slow sweeping shots followed by a quick zoom out helps establish the difference in moods, from serene to unsettling. One of my particular favourites in the film is the shot from the paper’s point of view. It was an interesting shot in that it somehow strengthens the notion that the blood pledge was taboo.

I was not too fond about how the characters were portrayed. There were aspects to the movie that appeared a bit too far-fetched. As much as people would say that teenagers are more prone to emotional highs and lows because of hormonal changes, the idea of wanting people dead because of a school key is a bit extreme. Boys, yes but not a school key. The key does not open anything but is supposed to symbolize being at the top of the class. Then there are confusing aspects to the story. Yoo-jin wants to kill So-hee for stealing her man but not Un-joo who took her academic spot and thus, the rightful new owner of “the key”. So-hee dumps her best friend Un-joo to join another clique but tells her she wants to commit suicide. The ghost kills everyone that knows about the pact and a few other people but spares So-hee. She is one immensely lucky girl but she is one of the few protagonists that I cannot bring myself to root for.

Overall, I have seen scarier Asian horror movies than Whispering Corridors 5. The characters are not believable for me either. What I do like about this particular segment of the series is the creative use of shots and how they are used to set the mood of the film. Watch it for yourself and see if it is something you like.

Asian Horror Movie Synopsis

4bia is an Asian horror anthology consisting of four shorts. Loneliness tells of the story of a young woman stuck in her small apartment because of an accident which has left her wearing a cast on her leg. Her only means of communication with the outside world is her mobile phone. A male stranger befriends her by sending text messages. It all goes well until strange things begin to occur inside her apartment. She discourages the sender from coming over but the stranger has other plans.

The Deadly Charm tells the story of Ngeed, the son of an undertaker, who gets beaten to death by his fellow classmates for reporting their drug habit. Before he dies, he places a curse on the teenagers. One by one, they die a gruesome and horrible death. Pink, a member of the group, was the only one who did not beat him up. Will she also face Ngeed’s wrath?

Four friends take a camping trip in the woods. The boys swap stories of movies and ghosts. Ae jokingly tells his buddies Ter, Shin and Puak that if he dies, he will come back to haunt the man who sleeps in the middle. The next day, Ae disappears while trying to save Ter during a rafting accident. As the remaining three discuss the chances of whether Ae will stay true to his word, Ae appears from out of nowhere. Has he come back to haunt the remaining three?

Pim is a flight attendant who is called for an emergency assignment to assist Princess Sophia on her trip to Phuket. The princess is vengeful of the woman having an affair with her husband. She mistreats Pim, knowing that she is her husband’s mistress. Pim tries to get revenge but accidentally kills the princess in the process. Now, the princess is getting her revenge.

Asian Horror Movie Review

Loneliness takes a more minimalistic approach to creating a scary movie. There are no flashy effects or unusual camera shots here. The horror is created by introducing subtle details one at a time up until the reveal. It is interesting to note that there is no actual dialogue involved between any of the characters in the first short. All of the conversing is done thru the display of cellphone messages. Much of the movie plays out in a single location, namely the woman’s apartment. Our main character lives alone with a broken leg while all of her companions are away for several days. Her actual apartment is small, dark and dingy and is located several floors from the street. She talks to a guy who has been cooped up somewhere for as long as she has had her leg broken. These subtle details and more add up to create a feeling of helplessness and loneliness, in line with the title of the film. All of the details may seem disjointed at first but will lead to an “Ah!” moment by the end of the short. Unlike other Asian horror movies that involve ghosts, you see the actual ghost only once in this movie. Yet, the gradual introduction of details creates for a good sense of horror.

After Loneliness, there is The Deadly Charm. The second short is more fast-paced in line with using more youthful and energetic characters. Unlike the first short, The Deadly Charm uses a lot more of creative camera shots, gore and special effects coupled with some alternative/rock music. I like seeing CGI effects being used in a film when it is done properly but that is not the case here. The monsters here seem too rough. It would have been better if the actual character were used instead and changed using makeup or some other means. The swooping and sometimes shaky camera shots, combined with images of blood and gore may look good but they are used more to shock viewers and conceal a somewhat shallow storyline.

Next, we have Man in the Middle. The story also delves into friendship of a different kind using a mix of horror and comedy. Making people laugh in a horror movie is difficult as it combines two contrasting genres. Horror films are meant to scare you and make the viewer feel distressed and uncomfortable. Comedy is supposed to make viewers laugh and feel good. Oftentimes, when both genres are combined, you end up seeing more of a light film infused with monsters, lots of gore or has a more gothic feel, such as in the case of Sleepy Hollow or Sweeney Todd. Man in the Middle takes place in the present time. The situation can be considered commonplace. It has an interesting twist at the end but what makes it funny is the interaction and banter between the four characters. For instance, you have the guys sleeping connected end to end inside a tent to avoid getting haunted. The light-hearted and sometimes witty remarks coupled with some shots of ghosts make for a good interesting Asian horror comedy short.

The Last Flight has an interesting plot but it does not deliver when it comes to horror. There are not a lot of frightening scenes and in most instances, the scenes do not make you scream or even make you squirm from your seat. Use of displaced body hair is common in a lot of Asian horror films. Its use can either help give you chills or make you gag. For this flick, it seems more of the latter. The flight attendant’s acting does not help as it appears a bit flat as well. Viewers may admire the flight attendant’s spunk and creativity when it comes to punishing the princess although using this flick as the ending is a letdown for a good compilation of Asian horror shorts.

For viewers that are not sure about sitting through an entire horror movie, films such as 4bia and Phobia 2 are worth looking into. Each short is normally created by a different director. This offers viewers a greater variety of choices. Japan is a country well known for producing experimental shorts in Asian horror. Viewers should try checking those out as well.

Since the release of Ringu and its Hollywood remakes, Asian horror films have become popular in other countries outside the continent. Although Asian horror movies have produced good numbers worldwide, the splash in international film awards has been smaller than expected. A nomination for any Asian horror flick in the Oscars, the Academy Awards should not be expected anytime soon. Horror flicks in general have done poorly in such prestigious events. Those that pass rarely win any major awards. Here are a few of the more popular Asian horror films and their accolades on the international stage.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”

Most people may have already seen at least one movie which has a storyline revolving around a guy cheating on his girlfriend. You can definitely add this movie to your list. This is the type of film that girls would want to show their boyfriends in case the latter gets any funny ideas.

*Includes spoilers*

The movie employs a lot more of sudden and quick flashes of scary images. There are a few good scares but if you have seen this technique too many times before, you may feel disappointed with the effects. In some cases, the inclusion of a ghostly figure seems too forced. At least two characters in the movie will comment about images looking too retouched. For people who are growing tired of seeing displaced body hair, unfortunately, you will still find instances of that here. There are also scenes which do not seem scientifically possible like doing an abortion on your own fetus. Yes, you heard it correctly and it is not by taking pills, mind you.

Albeit not entirely original, the flick does have an interesting twist at the ending. You will need to press forward to about an hour into the film to get to the good parts.

For people that have never seen Asian horror movies before, My Ex is a good flick to try out. More seasoned viewers who need a bigger high should look elsewhere for their fix.

Categorizing Asian Horror Movies

When one speaks of horror films, the immediate thought that comes to mind is that of ghosts or monsters. Much of what the outside world would consider Asian horror films to include seeing a figure of a woman with long hair, a body of water, more displaced hair, some scary-looking kids and black cats among others. To an extent, viewers will still find movies that use one or more of these elements, even years after Ringu and Ju-on first hit the cinemas. However, categorize Asian horror flicks to these elements alone and you would be missing out on a lot of other great movies.

Psychological Horror

Unlike the current trend in American movies that delves more into slasher-type films filled with gore or an adaptation of the style used in the Blair Witch Project, a large percentage of Asian horror movies delve into what is considered psychological horror. Psychological horror consists more of subtle changes rather than going for jolts of fear or repulsion. A few examples include:

Exploitation Horror

Asian Horror Movie Synopsis

Chon is haunted by graphic dreams of a woman being butchered. All she tells him is her name, Dararai, and that he must come find her. The dreams become more violent that he begins hallucinating that he is being attacked by the deceased woman. After narrowly killing his sister P’Ae during one of his hallucinations, Chon seeks the help of Dr, Usa, a psychiatrist. Unsuccessful in finding an explanation for his vivid nightmares, Chon seeks out the answers on his own. He needs to do it quickly before Dararai seeks for more blood.

Asian Horror Movie Review

This movie features some of the best CGI and special effects I have seen on an Asian horror movie so far. The length and timing of the effects are impeccable and makes for some really good shocks and scares. What makes it a truly great film for me is that it does not solely rely on the effects. It has a good storyline with an interesting twist at the end. The characters are well developed. I find that the actors chosen for the parts are also spot on as they made the characters and story believable. There are a few confusing segments but nothing that would wreck the experience. The background music is also a great touch as it sets the mood quite well. If you are looking for an Asian horror flick to sink your teeth into, this is one that should not be missed.

For readers who are interested in watching online, there are a number of sites which do offer a selection of Asian horror movies. Here are some of these websites, some which I have personally tried and am currently a fan of. Keep in mind that watching Asian horror flicks online does require a decent connection to the Internet. You wouldn’t want the movie skipping the good parts, right?

1. Asian Horror Movies

This is the Mecca for fans of Asian horror flicks. If you are not aware of this site, then you have missed a lot. It is a collection of all movies, documentaries and a handful of anime produced in Asia that falls under the horror/suspense genre. Watch the trailer that plays before the feature film to have an idea of their more popular flicks. Registration is not required to view any of the movies although the site would appreciate a donation to keep it going.

Finding Movies: The homepage features a list of the newest uploads as well as some recommended Asian horror flicks. Click on Movie List by Country to see their complete list of movies.

Subtitles: Movies that have been released recently tend to have awful translations. It takes time to translate to English. Expect to read some funny or awkward translations in such cases.

Players: Some movies feature a number of options of media players including DiVx, JWplayer and Flash players, giving viewers choices on which program to use.

Ads: In most cases, expect some form of ad or popup to appear before accessing the actual film.

2. Youtube

Has an extensive list of Asian horror movies, that is if you know what you are looking for.

Finding Movies:Use the search bar to find movies. You may need to add the phrase "full movie" to limit your results.

Subtitles: The quality varies depending on the uploaded version.

Players: A flash player is required to view the movies on this site although there is no need to register to access the channels.

3. Veoh

Features a few Asian horror films but not a great deal. Registration is free but required to watch full flicks. Otherwise, the site limits the view to a few minutes.

Finding Movies: The layout of the site makes it more difficult to watch Asian horror films. You will need to specify the title in the search bar and hope one of its registered members has a copy.

Players: Adobe Flash, VeohTV

Subtitles: Have not encountered a bad subtitle yet.

Ads: Haven’t encountered any popups when I accessed the site.

4. The Only Device

Has a rather extensive collection of horror movies, not all from Asia. Some of the oldest non-Asian horror movies I found date as far back as the 1920s. Recommended for movie buffs that want a taste of everything. Users may suggest or post alternative links for the same movie. Some of the links allow users to watch for free while others require registration.

Finding Movies: Horror movies from Asia are mixed with movies from other countries. List includes a little over 1600 movies just under the horror category. Manually browsing through can be tedious. You might want to use the search bar instead to get quicker results.

Players: JWplayer, Adobe Flash and DivX. VeohTV may also be required for a handful of movies. Mozilla Firefox is also the recommended browser for using the site.

Subtitles: Have not checked all the links yet so I am unsure of the quality.

Ads: Yes. Number of ads and popups depend on the link being clicked.

5. Google It
If it doesn’t come up in any one of the previous sites, try manually searching for the movie and see what pops up.

6. Oovo.tv

Oovo.tv features about 200 horror flicks with a handful of Asian horror films, both originals and remakes. The choices are limited and accessibility varies depending on which country you are viewing the videos from. Some of the Asian horror flicks I found listed include The Echo, Poison and 9 Mahine 9 Divas. The movie Ghost Month is an interesting movie as it is technically considered an American film but the topic centers on a well known Chinese tradition. It is not a remake although certain elements appear similar to the Singapore’s Asian horror film The Maid.

7. Justin.tv

The site offers an entirely different concept from that of the previously mentioned websites. Instead of uploading content and watching the uploaded video through a link, the site has channels and broadcasters. Think of it as watching television online with each broadcaster and channel as a different television station. The movies are featured in real time so you will need a decent Internet connection to enjoy the movies here. It is rare to find Asian horror flicks being streamed online although you can still get lucky or make a request to the broadcaster. Up until 2011, broadcaster sampaguita123 was well known for having a Weekend Horror Fest which exclusively featured Asian horror flicks. Other than that, you may need to befriend a few broadcasters to ask/request for Asian horror movies.

Ads: A few banners and ads if you are using the free account.

8. Facebook

Fans need not go far to get their fix of Asian horror movies. If you have a Facebook account, check out Asian Horror Movies (Download Movies) by Penny. Their Facebook page has quite a good collection of movies, sans the ads. The page doesn’t upload full movies but links on where you can view or download them. This means you may get forwarded to a site which requires a separate registration (free). Movies here are categorized according to Albums of different countries. Just LIKE the page to gain full access of what the community has to offer.

Another account worth checking out is Asian and American Horror Reviews & Films. Here, you can request for links of movies that you want to watch. Just leave a message to Suzanne, another nice lady who seems to live and breathe for horror films. Be sure to check out past requests so that you do not unwittingly ask for a link that has already been posted before. Note: do not ask her to post a link for Twilight. That is not considered a horror film by any means.
