Fremantle wins Singapore Idol reorder

Production giant FremantleMedia has secured Singapore Idol a third season on Mediacorp TV Singapore, with transmission set for August.

The series will again be hosted by Singaporean actor Gurmit Singh and co-hosted by last season's Singapore Idol and reigning Asian Idol, Hady Mirza. Returning to the judging panel is musician Dick Lee, Mediacorp Radio MD Florence Lian and music producer Ken Lim.

FremantleMedia CEO Patrick Schult said: "With a record turnout of applicants, we have seen some great talent and also some not so great, who were very entertaining all the same.

"FremantleMedia has taken the Idols programme to more than 40 countries around the world with great success. Singapore has been waiting a long time for another Singapore Idol and I don't think it will be disappointed."

IT IS confirmed. Hady Mirza, winner of the 2006 Singapore Idol, will co-host the third season of the talent competition with Gurmit Singh.

The format of the popular reality TV show, which returns to Channel 5 on Aug 9 at 8.30pm, has also been tweaked.

Hady, who was also Asian Idol champion in 2007, will have his own segment where he mentors Idol wannabes.

'I will be playing big brother to the contestants,' the 28-year-old told Life! at The Cathay on Friday.

'I've gone through the same things these people will go through during the competition, so I can give them advice based on my experience.'

Over 4,000 turn up for Singapore Idol auditions

SINGAPORE: Over 4,000 people turned up for the Singapore Idol auditions on Saturday as of 5pm. That is double the number of the last Singapore Idol season three years ago.

Organisers have decided to extend the auditions to Sunday due to the overwhelming response.

The barricades were up at 8pm on Friday night at The Cathay and the queue started forming immediately. Many of the idol hopefuls went without sleep the entire night but they were certainly not low on energy.

Supportive families, tired friends and enthusiastic fans kept many of the idol hopefuls company throughout the long night.

For some, the sleepless night was well worth the effort.

One idol hopeful said: "I'm just going to give my best shot for the second audition and hopefully I can make it through. It's time for real talent to step through."

And for those who did not make it, they are not giving up on their dreams just yet.

Overwhelming response for Singapore Idol auditions

SINGAPORE: The third season of Singapore Idol is kicking off in two months and response for the first round of auditions was so overwhelming that producers have had to extend auditions by one more day.

The rain on Sunday morning did not deter Kris-Allen and Adam-Lambert hopefuls from standing in long queues to show off their vocal powers.

Over 4,000 people registered to audition for the show.

Producers of Singapore Idol said those who did not manage to get the chance to be auditioned can do so next weekend.

Hady is handy for the return of Idol-mania

SINGAPORE: The success of "Singapore Idol" can only be spelt in two words - Hady Mirza. So it's no surprise that the 2009 season will see the winner of the Singapore talent search and also Asian Idol, joining the stellar line-up.

Playing the role of 'big brother', Hady will share his first-hand experience that should prove to be valuable to the next generation of "Singapore Idol" hopefuls.

The multi-talented Gurmit Singh will lead season three of "Singapore Idol" which is slated to be the toughest yet.

Taking the judges chairs once again will be Singapore's answer to American Idol's Simon Cowell - local music producer Ken Lim, as well as musical genius Dick Lee and Florence Lian, who will be the 'rose among the thorns' but don't forget roses can be prickly!

Leaving the show are two familiar faces from season two - judge and jazz singer Jacintha Abisheganaden and Gurmit's co-host Daniel Ong.

And don't expect it to be business as usual.

In a new twist this season, "Idol" fans can start voting for their favourites from the start of the show, so expect to see who’s in and who’s out 'Live' on the same night.

As for the contestants who stand to win a recording contract with Universal Music, they don't just get to compete on how well they can belt out a tune.

The hit series will empower contestants who get to showcase talent that makes them stand out from the pack by being allowed to play musical instruments from the theatre rounds onwards.

Other new elements to "Singapore Idol" include the Judges’ Save – a one-time privilege used by the judges to prevent one contestant from going home during the “Spectacular” episodes, and the Salvation Song – which is a common song that all contestants will prepare and can be performed by the two bottom-ranking contestants to stay in the competition.

"Singapore Idol" hits the TV screens on 9 August with a peek into the auditions that start Saturday 6 June, and climaxes on 20 December with the finale.

Get ready for Idol-mania!

Every Wednesday night, I find myself sitting on the sofa with my eyes glued to the TV, waiting to catch my favourite reality show: Viet Nam Idol. Viet Nam Idol, the Vietnamese version of the famous British television show Pop Idol by British entertainment executive Simon Fuller, is only in its 2nd season but has attracted thousands of pop star wannabes who wait in ques for hours for a chance to audition.

Compared to other singing competitions in Viet Nam such as Sao Mai Diem Hen (Morning Star Rendezvous) and Ngoi Sao Tieng Hat Truyen Hinh (Stars singing on TV), which cater to professional singers, Viet Nam Idol is the new kid on the block. However, what makes the show different is its message, which encourages viewers to keep trying to fulfil their dreams no matter what. Isn’t it amazing to see a shoeshine boy queuing up to try out or a 30-year old engineer taking his shot with the support and love of his whole family? This brings the show closer to the audience, who has the right to vote for not only a beautiful voice, but sometimes because they see a part of themselves in the contestants.

Influenced by my hope to see talented musicians starting their career from scratch, I used to be sceptical about Viet Nam Idol’s voting system. A lot of talented singers were voted off the show early, while those-not-so-talented seemed to linger. However, when it comes to the two remaining contestants, Viet Nam Idol has proved itself to be a real stage for young talents to shine.

With the spread of singing contests, many musicians and music lovers are doubting the quality of reality programs like Vietnam Idol. Although many like Vietnam Idol because it gives talented people a chance to gain exposure, it should also be recognised finding singers with real talent is becoming more and more difficult. Even the top contestants, though they have tried their best, are in the shadow of established singers. The presenters are friendly, but lack sufficient presentation skills. The show is also plagued by a number of uncertainties: questions about the voting system, the fishy relationship between contestants and organisers and allegations about manipulations of money to win the race. Whether these accusations are true or not, contestants should keep in mind that winning a competition doesn’t always guarantee a successful career.

This Wednesday, season two finished with two contestants grasping at their last chance to win the votes of TV viewers and become the next Viet Nam Idol. It is not surprising that the "friendly" battle between the two "Davids" of Viet Nam, Thanh Duy and Quoc Thien made for a exciting grand finale. They sung their heart out and hope that the audience will not hesitate to pick up their cell phone and vote.

Out of the two remaining contestants, 22-year-old Thanh Duy, is definitely the better performer. With skilled dance moves and intelligent song selection, he knows how to work the crowd. He’s also an expert in avoiding the well-worn path of singing hit songs, which some feel can compensate for their mediocre vocals. He made me, a loyal audience member, feel relaxed and excited. And I will not hesitate to say I like his rendition of the song Toi Thich (I Like) and his amazing acting on stage with Thanh Tung’s well known song Loi To Tinh Cua Mua Xuan (The Spring’s Expression of Love). In the end, it may be his uniqueness that makes teen girls vote for him every week. "Thanh Duy deserves the Idol award because he is so cool! He is confident, creative and never afraid of taking risks", said a fan.

Quoc Thien is a 20- year old with an almost flawless voice who has won the hearts of not only the young, but also their mums and grandmas, especially when he’s singing ballads such as Khong Con Mua Thu (No more Autumn) or Bai Thanh Ca Buon (A sad hymn). Week after week, Quoc Thien has not only shown his progress in singing ballads, but also his ability to involve the audience in some up-beat contemporary songs. Even though he is not a good dancer, Quoc Thien’s warm, smooth vocals and excellent technique make him deserve the number one spot. Listening to him sing an emotional song dedicated to his late mother or watching him help his poor family brings tears to the eyes of many viewers. He hopes that winning the Viet Nam Idol title will help lift his family out of poverty and once again prove that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. That is why my mother said, "I will vote for him."

After almost six months of auditions and performances with amazing times and awkward moments for both contestants and presenters, Viet Nam Idol still has a lot to improve in order to deserve its name. Who will wear the crown next Wednesday, a never-play-it-safe performer or a simple beautiful voice? I have my own choice and you have yours. In the meantime, let’s dream on because the next Idol can be any one of us. — VNS

Idol vote appeal in Calcutta

The journey to the top five position of Indian Idol 4 has not been easy for Rajdeep Chatterjee. Now, his family wants to ensure that the singer’s remaining road — perhaps to success — is less bumpy.

After appealing for votes in hometown, the Janata Dal United Students’ Union (JDUSU) has turned its gaze on Calcutta, where it is campaigning for Rajdeep. Though the Loyola lad has given power-packed performances time and again, his supporters do not want to leave any stone unturned while the show is in its last lap.

About 50 activists of JDUSU have campaigned at Jadavpur University, Scottish Church College, Rabindra Bharati University, Ashutosh College and St Xavier’s College in Calcutta and they say the response has been overwhelming.

“We do not want to take any risk now. People of Calcutta have an ear for music and we hope they would vote for a Bengali boy. The response we got from the crowd there was more than expected,” said Sanjiv Acharya, the national secretary of JDUSU.

The student activists have also campaigned at Gariahat, Maniktala and Salt Lake.

Though Rajdeep is elated to be among the top five contestants at the musical event, votes are still bothering him. He said that pressure is mounting as the show reaches its final leg. “At reality shows there is no second chance. I have to perform well every time to stay in it. But despite my performance the votes are not pouring in for me.”

He acknowledges the fact that audience love have made him reach this position but being in the bottom three is bogging him down.

“Wherever I am today is because of the love and affection of people. If I am enjoying the moment but at the same time is a bit tensed. I am feeling the heat of the show now,” Rajdeep said, over the phone from Mumbai.

The 17-year-old feels that if he wins the title it would not only be his success but everybody who had voted or wished for him.

“The love is definitely there which is coming to me in the form of votes but I need more to be in the safe zone and to win the title, which is everything I want now,” Rajdeep said.

Amid the fanfare, ask him what he misses the most and pat come the reply. “ My father. I have been away from him for eight months now and I have not been able to talk to him or see. If I win the show he will be so proud of me,” he said

City music student wins Viet Nam Idol

HCM CITY — Twenty one-year-old Quoc Thien from the southern province of Dong Nai beat more than 15,000 contestants nationwide to win Viet Nam Idol 2008 on Wednesday night.

Thien, who is a second-grade student at the HCM Conservatory of Music, was showered with a US$5,000 cash prize and a recording contract worth $5,000 with the Music Faces Company. He will now go forward to represent Viet Nam in the Asian Idol contest.

Winning the title has totally changed Thien’s life. "The title really is a launching platform for my singing career. Now that I can sing for the Music Faces Company, I expect to move higher in my career," he said.

"My experiences at the Viet Nam Idol will help me to be more confident about competing in the upcoming Asian Idol contest." Thien will also be improving his English, he said.

Although Thien is not physically stunning, he is the proud owner of a sweet bass voice, which he used to serenade the audiences throughout the contest. He impressed the audience by continually improving at every stage of the competition since it began in August. During the final round, Thien commanded the attention of all the judges when he sang the (Lipstick) by Duc Nghia, Diep Khuc Mua Xuan (Spring Refrain) by Quoc Dung, and Dau Tinh Sau (Sad Mark of Love) by Ngo Thuy Mien.

On Wednesday night, Thien and another finalist, Thanh Duy, sang duets with superstars Dam Vinh Hung and Quang Dung. The judges: singer Siu Black, composer Ho Hoai Anh and saxophonist Tran Manh Tuan, wowed the audience with an impromptu performance. The trio performed Thenh Thenh O Oi – a song by composer Nguyen Cuong influenced by the folk melodies of ethnic groups living in Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).

Raymond Gutierrez impresses 'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest

MANILA, Philippines – "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was impressed with the hosting style of his Pinoy counterpart, Raymond Gutierrez.

This was revealed in GMA's entertainment program "Showbiz Central" on Sunday.

According to the report, of the many hosts in "Idol" franchises worldwide, Gutierrez was the one who caught his attention.

According to a witness abroad, Seacrest did a plug last week for "American Idol" using the "Pinoy Idol" introduction. The account said Seacrest ran the soundbite several times.

Another witness, who heard Seacrest's kind words to Gutierrez, said the host even wanted to copy Gutierrez's hosting style. The report said Seacrest planned to introduce "American Idol" the way Gutierrez introduced "Pinoy Idol."

Gutierrez was flattered by the Seacrest's words.

Getting high on Dinagyang

Iloilo City — With its slogan On Higher Ground, this year’s Dinagyang Festival ended on a happy note. Local and foreign tourists who flocked to this western part of the Visayas are still “feeling high” from the various activities held in celebration of the feast of Sto. Niño. Ilonggos, too, enjoyed the fanfare including GMA’s free show dubbed as Dinagyang Kapuso Night that drew an enormous crowd at the Freedom Grandstand.

Local artists like Pinoy Idol finalist and true-blue Ilongga Sue Ellen, Istayl Naton! hosts Angelia Ong, John Arceo, Mamo Monyika and Dino Vasquez entertained the crowd with song numbers and antics that added glee to the night.

Back stage, Sue Ellen relates that she has now fully recovered from the heavy blow that struck her and her family. She considers the flood waters and fire incidents — that left them homeless months ago — as part of “those trying times.”

“Since the lot is not originally ours, we decided to rent an apartment instead,” says Sue, who returned to Iloilo and continues her studies at Central Philippine University taking up Education after her Pinoy Idol stint.

“Life is much easier here but I still perform in Manila once in a while. I did a show with Ogie Alcasid (and Ramiele Malubay) last month,” she continues. “And of course, I sing on occasion like this as a Kapuso. But more often, I sing here with the church ministry. I really enjoy singing.” So does the crowd who applauded her energetic number Please Don’t Stop the Music.

Various games made every Kapuso’s spirit soar high. And as the night grew livelier, rain started to fall heavily, yet it was not enough to spoil the evening fun and excitement.

All — young and old — stood still, seemingly unmindful of any health problem the rain may bring. They shrieked in excitement, stomped their feet with joy and clapped their hands the hardest when Luna Mystika stars Heart Evangelista and Mark Anthony Fernandez appeared and performed one after the other on the makeshift wooden stage.

“This happens rarely (to see celebrities in person) so we might as well enjoy the moment even if it’s raining,” an Ilonggo fan says.

Mark, while singing Nandito Ako under a wide umbrella, gave away shirts to the jampacked crowd.

“Ayos ba kayo diyan?,” he asked with concern. The audience, in turn, responded with delight.

It was Mark’s third time to join Dinagyang. This time, Mark thanked everyone for the warm welcome and invited the audience to continue supporting Kapuso shows especially Luna Mystika where he plays Dexter, the love interest of Heart’s Celestina.

Heart, on the other hand, was touched to see Ilonggos soaking wet all throughout the show. She greeted them pleasantly and belted out a song accompanied by a band. The heavy downpour also didn’t stop her from going up on stage even if she has just recovered from sickness. Heart, too, at one point, tried to keep the umbrella away to interact well with the crowd but failed because she might be electrocuted from the microphone she was holding.

“I’m so happy to be here. Thank you for all the support and please don’t fail to watch Luna Mystika,” Heart says.

As the Kapuso Night ended, happiness vividly reflected on everybody’s faces. The Ilonggos’ warm welcome, in turn, conveyed a feeling as intense as the pounding of the drums we often hear come Dinagyang time.
