I.C. Shah

Founder, President and CEO of ICS Telecom Inc. – a leading provider of voice and data network services in Western New York. Mr. Shah is a graduate of Michigan State University and a very prominent community leader. He currently serves on the Boards of Rochester Broadway Theatre League, D.I.A.L. and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Rochester. In the past he has served on the Boards of Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, Compeer, Kidney Foundation , Rochester

Area Community Foundation, Seniors First etc. Mr. Shah is a well-respected philanthropist and a fundraiser. He has raised millions of dollars for the non-profit organizations in Rochester. For his community service, Mr. Shah has been recognized by many organizations such as Mental Health Association, Compeer, Kidney Foundation, Association of Indians in America- Genesee Valley Chapter, just to name few. He has been honored as Small Business Person of the Year by the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, Urban league of Rochester and Small Business Administration. He was also honored as one of the Outstanding Asian Americans of New York State by Governor Mario Cuomo. Mr. Shah also received the prestigious Philanthropy Award from the Rochester Area Community Foundation, and most recently Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University. Mr. Shah has a passion for his community and the causes involving children and the disadvantaged. He has used his creativity, entrepreneurship and philanthropy to help hundreds of organizations in our community. When he gets on the Board of any organization, he serves with the same passion and enthusiasm as his own business. He has a passionate commitment to serve his adopted community which has accepted him and his family and made him feel at home.

Wim Appelo

President of the Xerox Global Business and Services Group. He was appointed to this position in October 2008 and named a corporate vice president in February 2004. He is also a corporate senior vice president, appointed in December 2007. Wim is responsible for the company’s worldwide product strategy, marketing & planning as well as product development and engineering. He also is responsible for the company’s worldwide supplies business, manufacturing, supply chain, procurement, facilities management and other core corporate functions. Wim joined Xerox in 1991. Since that time, he has held several positions in corporate audit, strategy, and finance for manufacturing and supply chain operations in Europe. In 2000, he championed the worldwide inventory reduction initiative and management process for the corporation and in 2001 returned to Europe to manage the European Manufacturing and Supply

Chain. Prior to joining Xerox, Wim worked for seven years in the paper industry for two operating companies within Buhrmann Tetterode, NV, Netherlands. From 1984 to 1987 he was financial controller for the Levison Group b.v., and from 1987-1991 he served as director for Papierfabriek Doetinchem b.v., responsible for logistics, IT and finance. Wim holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from HEAO in Zwolle, Netherlands and an MBA from Delta University in Utrecht, Netherlands. He is chairman of the board for Xerox International Partners, and is a board member for Xerox Ireland. Appelo is also a member of the Rochester Institute of Technology board of trustees and the University of Rochester Medical Center Board.

Sophie Vandebroek

Xerox’s Chief Technology Officer and the President of the Xerox Innovation Group since January 2006. She is responsible for overseeing Xerox’s research centers in Europe, Asia, Canada and US as well as the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC Inc.). Previously, Dr. Vandebroek was Chief Engineer of Xerox Corporation and Vice President of the Xerox Engineering Center, technical advisor to Xerox’s chief operating officer and Director of the Xerox Research Centre of Canada. Dr. Vandebroek is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, a Fulbright Fellow and a Fellow of the Belgian-American Educational Foundation. She holds 12 US patents. Dr. Vandebroek has received awards from Xerox, IBM, HP, Monsanto, the Belgium National Science Foundation, Semiconductor Research Corporation, IEEE, and Cornell University. Dr. Vandebroek is a member of the Board of Directors of Analogic Corporation, of Nypro Corporation, and is a member of The US National Academies Committee on Science, Technology & Law. She is a trustee of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and also serves on the advisory council of the deans of Engineering at Cornell University and at MIT. In 2011 Dr. Vandebroek was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame and elected into the Royal Flemish Academy for Arts & Sciences. Dr. Vandebroek was born in Leuven, Belgium where she earned a master’s degree in electro-mechanical engineering from Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, Belgium. She received her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She and her husband, live in Lincoln, MA and enjoy spending time with their six young adult children.

Ashok Rao

Ashok Rao joined RIT in 2007 after over 25 years as a faculty member at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., where he was professor of technology operations and information management and served as chair of the school’s management division. Rao has also served on the faculty at Northeastern University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In industry, Rao was director of business systems with Northern Telecom and has prior experience at Canada Packers and Leeds

& Northrop. His consulting and research includes new product development, total quality management, computer integrated enterprises and management training. He was president of RAM Systems Inc., a software-consulting firm and is actively involved in the Center for Quality of Management and APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society). Rao earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharaghpur, India. He later earned an M.S. in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in industrial and management engineering from the University of Iowa.

Dear ACT Members,

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. To celebrate this special occasion, many national and regional events are going on throughout the US to honor and pay tribute to the tremendous contributions of Asian Americans to the rich and diverse fabric of our multi-cultural nation. Various ACT chapters have been holding activities to celebrate this month together with fun and meaningful events in each of the regional communities. Please help celebrate this month by taking a moment to reflect on our heritage as Asians and Pacific Islanders.

In the past couple of years, we have heard from you on this topic through your thoughtful essays and photos that evoke Asian heritage and what Asian heritage means to us. This year we are embracing this topic through a Photo Story Contest, a collection of photos that are complimented with written stories that will be compiled from your submissions. Join us in this celebration by sharing your experience and thoughtful insights.

• “Tell Us Your Story” – ACT is launching our 2^nd Annual Photo Story Contest. We are encouraging ACT Members to participate in the photo contest to share with fellow ACT Members nationwide. You may submit up to 3 photos at our ACT Photo Contest website http://act2011photo.shutterfly.com along with a short story that compliments each photo. (Registration required – instructions attached) Uploads are due Wednesday, August 31, 2011. The photos MUST belong to the submitter (either taken by you or showing your involvement in Asian-Pacific Culture) and the top 3 winners will be determined by the ACT Board. The first place winner will receive a $100 Gift Card to Amazon.com.  Two second and three third place winners will also receive $50 and $25 gift cards, respectively. • “Make An ACT Connection” – ACT is working hard to bring you a job shadowing / networking program among ACT members where we match up members who want to meet other members in various segments within Xerox. Andy Tilp has been with Xerox almost 9 years and was with Tek for 16 years with a 5 year hiatus in between where he explored other options including his own software company.

He has an Electrical Engineering degree from Colorado State and a Masters in Computer Science from Oregon State.

Outside of the technical realm, he has had a passion for helping families and individuals with financial planning and promoting financial literacy. He has moved this passion into the professional realm by pursuing his Certified Financial Planner designation and is the principal of his own fee-only financial planning firm. He is a Registered Investment Advisor with the state of Oregon. He also teaches high school classes on personal financial literacy.

Beyond that, Andy has fun with his family’s activities and running a small farm outside of Sherwood.

Vinay Rao is the Director of Channel Strategy and SMB initiatives in Indirect Channel Business Group responsible for creating growth strategies for Indirect Channels and developing SMB oriented offerings that expand Xerox brand name beyond hardware on a Worldwide basis. Vinay has held various strategy, Marketing and Business management positions in business groups over the last 16 years in Xerox.   

Vinay is excited about accepting the Wilsonville chapter ACT president position and is looking forward to working with everyone involved to pursue key priorities and ideas to lead ACT to achieve our vision in 2011. He believes with most of economic growth forecasted to come from Asian economies, we Asians have a unique opportunity to help Xerox achieve its growth objectives by energizing and sharing our perspectives and creativity.
