Keep in mind that Byron’s poem is a mock-epic that satirizes the well known stories concerning Don Juan (check Spanish literature, 17th Century). Another way to position Byron’s poem is to remember that if falls between Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Barrymore’s Don Juan (best remembered for a pre-Charlie Chan Warner Oland as Cesare Borgia).

(here’s a perfect chance for me to figure out how to do citations in WP, I’ve been meaning too, but the cite element has never seemed to make any sense to me)

Are you referring to Byron’s Don Juan? An excellent choice. The Commedia has been heavily studied and documented so it might not be as much fun.

I just rediscovered this draft. It would appear that I had the phrase uncommon waters running through my head for some time now, as far back as April 14, and I'm willing to bet well before that. For a while it was going to be the next poetry exercise I gave Erin to work with, to write a poem by that title, but I kept coming up with other assignments—and I felt it was cheating as I already had some ideas brewing. And then I got really drunk wrote this draft in a bar. I'm unsure if I should fork it into its own poem or call it an early draft of Entanglement and be done.

From what I can piece together, the phrase mangled wood dates to around April 23 when I ran into a road called Minglewood. I instantly thought of mangled wood and how well it fit with uncommon waters. Those phrases simmered for a while along with a lot of Astronomy Cast, and lies, and deceit, and hurt feelings, and painful-situations-for-which-I-have-no-words, and over a month later I have a poem. Yay. If you were to ask me if it was worth it, I would answer no.

I generally post previous versions of poems in a self-titled category. I’ll post a few select earlier versions of this one at some point. It begun as two separate poems, each one went through many, many revisions. And I’m still not through. It’s too much work to get them all here, so when I get around to it I’ll post the first couple of drafts of each one.

I added as many of the previous drafts that I could find, including the 48 Hours Magazine submission about the 911 call. I am still unsure what the kid was after—or if 911 calls are recorded in a phones call log. You’d have thought I would have checked by now.
