More Things to Do in Mexico City

I have just returned from a trip to Mexico City and it absolutely ruled. (I have been there a couple times previously, but more than a decade ago. Of course it ruled then as well.) I will go again, and I would love to have an entirely non-overlapping itinerary. Looking at the list of places I've gone, what ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THINGS should I do in the future?

Here's the list of places I've been, probably not comprehensive but it's what comes to mind:
Ambitious Fiction from the 80s, 90s or Early 2000s?

Seeing Frowner's comment in the post on the Blue about the Guardian's reader-sourced top-100 books list with the assertion that "STILL, no one has read any ambitious fiction from the 80s, 90s or early 2000s" made me consider if I had any such titles that came to mind. None did, so I decided to come here and query the hivemind for recommendations. Presumably definitions of "ambitious fiction" will vary, but I'd like to see what fits the bill for mefites.

AI Adversarial... But make it Fashion!

It has long been thought that eyespot mimicry on Moths and Butterflies' wings work as predator deterrents. While that has not truly been rigorously proven as such, I would still like to extrapolate that facial simulation today could act as a deterrent to predatory AI facial recognition.
Therefore I would like to have a scarf to wear that confuses the everliving fuck out of all facial recognition models. But I have a few requirements...

Requirements:
1. Summer weight
2. Real data supporting face ID jamming. Such things exist in theory but I trust exactly nothing on the internet anymore aside from metafilter users supplied citations and wikipedia's edit history pages.
Acknowledgments:
This is both William Gibson's Ugliest Tee-shirt and Neal Stephenson's VEIL in concept.
I'm willing to get something printed myself, if supporting data is provided that a given pattern works at the form factor specified.

The Gay Duvet

Help me shop: I want a new duvet cover and have very specific requirements that I'm having a hard time finding all together. I'm putting my requirements inside. If you have a duvet cover to recommend that doesn't meet my very specific requirements, by clicking [more inside] you're consenting to being heckled in the comments. Thank you.

Non-negotiable requirements:
- Queen size duvet cover
- 100% cotton or cotton + natural fiber blend. I'll accept a viscose blend with mostly cotton.
- NOT "SATEEN" FEEL (not "cotton sateen" not anything that has that shiny slick feel it gives me ick, I swear to god the hard on this industry has for cotton sateen I despair) The duvet cover needs to feel like normal cotton bedsheets.
- same make of fabric on both sides of the cover (e.g. not that weird beige microfiber stuff on the reverse)
- fun to look at

Here is a series of declarative statements about what fun to look at means to me in this context:

I would like a duvet cover that features multiple bold, bright colors in some kind of exciting but informal print or pattern. I do not desire floral unless it's very abstracted. Yes, I have seen the Marguerite set at anthropologie. No, it's still too floral (also, cursed sateen). (This would be an acceptable floral for me, for example.) I do not desire mandala-style or other hippie adjacent prints. I like the colors and vibe of both of these sets on Etsy (1, 2) but they're too rigidly geometric for what's feeling fun to me right now (also, cursed sateen). This other listing a friend found for me on Etsy would be perfect (bold color, great relaxed-looking print) but again, CURSED SATEEN. I also quite like this one, but freakin microfiber dude. My current favorite duvet cover is from Ikea and looks like someone did splotches of multiple hues of watercolor onto a canvas. It's nearly perfect. Unfortunately I haven't liked any of Ikea's patterns for a couple years now and my backup duvet cover is getting threadbare. I'm willing to entertain subjective takes on what fun to look at means to other people, but I can't compromise on the sheetfeel.

Nice-to-haves:
- matching pillow cases
- snap or button closure instead of zipper, flap closure less good but also preferable to zipper

Music player to keep dog company

How do I keep music playing for him without a voice controlled speaker?

When I go out I like to leave music on for my dog (pet tax). Usually this is just leaving youtube music's chill station playing on my laptop. But sometimes for work I take my laptop with me, and I dont have a way to leave music playing.

Additional thoughts:
I dont love the idea of Alexa speakers and the like for privacy reasons. Nothing voice controlled.
I would like it to be able to play youtube music but could maybe download some music for him. I would like it to be able to play for a couple hours, otherwise I would use the record player.
FM radio is a possibility but not my favorite choice.
I have an iphone so could do something with an app, it just needs to be able to still work if the iphone leaves

Is this like buying an ipod and hooking it up to a speaker? Is this something that exists?

Looking for a collection of short stories by various writers for my wife. Stories should be well written and crafted. Mystery and "detective" okay but no fantasy, horror, sci fi, shlock writing, or dark endings. No violence against women. No Stephen King. Thanks for any ideas.

Very controversial technologies, pre-AI?

Has there ever been any technologies that has been more controversial than AI?

I'm not old but I'm not a spring chicken either. Looking back, I do not recall any technology being as controversial as AI. Perhaps there were some before my time. Like, I wasn't around when TV or cars came on the scene. Were there any technological inventions in the past that stirred up more strong feelings than AI?

Fantasy Books with Anthropomorphic Rabbits?

I can't remember this 70's/80's fantasy book series! It's driving me nuts. I've been searching google and amazon for about two hours and I keep hitting dead ends.

The details I remember:

The main character was a stoner type who got dragged into a fantasy world.
A female he went to school with followed him.
His magic was music-based.
He and the female were the only humans, all the other characters were anthropomorphic rabbits and foxes and other animals.
One of the main animal characters was a rabbit.
There was a large salamander that was a communist.
A strip club featuring a stripping mink (i think)

I am pretty sure I'm not thinking of Discworld. I got the paperback versions of the books from a library sale, the covers looked like typical Tor fantasy novels from that time period.

What should we do on our Bay Area staycation?

We live in Oakland, CA, and decided not to travel for Spring Break (which is next week). What should we do with 2 adults and 1 10 year old girl? It will be nice over the weekend (high 70s) and cooler next week (high of mid 60s). The kid and my spouse will go to Tahoe mid-week for a few days without me, but what are some off-beat things to do on either end? We're willing to travel a bit (but not a ton).

We live here so we've done a lot of stuff (including the thing that locals famous don't get around to, which is go to Alcatraz). Willing to travel within reason. What are some good ideas, especially off-beat ones?

Cleaning up after yourself. How???

I'm realizing that my husband and I both could improve in the area of cleaning up after ourselves, in the moment. I'm talking piles of clothing, stacks of dishes, a cluttered bathroom counter. Send help.

I do big cleans (especially before having guests over; that is a huge motivation for me). But these little daily things have added up and it's driving me to the brink of losing my mind. An example is clothing - we switch into pajamas at night, leaving our clothes either strewn on top of a surface or on the floor. Dirty things go down the laundry chute, but those not-quite-dirty things? They turn into a pile.

Some nights we eat dinner on the later side. One of us will cook, we'll hang out and eat together, and then it's 9:30 pm and the kitchen is a mess. I'll tackle some of it, but rarely finish because I'm tired and want to relax. Then the next day I'm having to compensate for leaving the cleaning half done. I also think we're both a little scatterbrained, so when I clean, I often do part of a task (like wash and dry laundry and lay it flat on the couch) but don't complete it (fold and put away). I get overwhelmed and don't often know where to begin, or get hyper focused on one task (mopping the kitchen floor) but the rest of the house remains cluttered.

This isn't so much about balancing the labor, but more about small habits that both of us can try to implement. I ask myself sometimes, "Will this be easier to do now or later?" And that mentality helps. Also, some items just don't have a "home", and that overwhelms me when it comes to putting things away.

We are both self employed and work a lot, so household things sometimes get deprioritized. Our house is also fairly small, and we are "stuff" people (artist + vintage shop owner). I'm looking for advice on ways to make home maintenance just slightly smoother. Any tips?

My back, my back, my chair, its crack

I'm WFH now, and my desk chair has a back that doesn't provide meaningful support. My workplace lets me order things from Staples (Canadian office supply chain). Can you help me evaluate options?

As I WFH, the chair I'm using -- which is a perfectly good chair in most respects -- has a back that looks normal, but if I actually sit back to the point I can feel support, feels like I am in the launch position on the Space Shuttle; there's a huge crack between my back if I sit up straight and the actual back of the chair. I've thoroughly examined the chair and there is no way to change the angle of the back.

I'm not keen on getting a new chair -- it feels wasteful -- but work will let me order some back support from Staples (and only Staples). Here's a link to the "back support" search results.

If you have personal experience with this issue and these kinds of solutions, I'd love some input. I am also open to strong advice for alternate remedies; my preference is to keep the chair and add some sort of support, but if there are other recommendations (within the Staplesverse) for alternate seating, etc., I'm open.

Fun Pride-themed gift ideas

Visiting two gay men this month for Pride and want to give them fun gifts easily packed into a carry-on bag because I'm flying.

The friends in question are a couple, and they are hosting me at their house, so I wanted to perhaps incorporate a thank you for letting me stay at your place gift with a Pride theme. Any ideas for small things I can pack?

Emergency workers with bad handwriting need help

How can I help volunteers to improve their written lettering, given only an hour of training and 1-2 follow up events?

I work with dozens of emergency volunteers who need to take notes on paper and post public signs. Most volunteers' handwriting is bad enough that we end up with un-readable notes, or waiting for the one person with good handwriting to make a sign. I can't expect volunteers to invest in the craft of penmanship & there are lots of other training demands.

My first thought was teaching a clear printing font that works well with poor pens/surfaces (think sharpie on wet cardboard or chalk on brick). Possibly something like a Hershey single line engraving font?

I'm open to stencils or any other aid that is reasonably fast, can be rained on and costs < $50.

Notes tend to be only a few sentences, e.g. "John Doe can donate 2 pallets of sandbags, pickup from the local gravel works, contact on radio channel 13". Or a whiteboard update in 3 inch letters: "West bridge closed, go to First hospital via East Street".

For notes, I'd also be interested in something fast & recognizable inside the group like a short hand or Graffiti

I often pack my lunch, and my current lunch bag is falling apart. Do you have an insulated lunch bag you particularly like? What makes it good?
