Its true - many people think of bulletin boards when they hear "cork flooring". Thanks for helping to educate them. Cork is a great product and there is so much one can do with it - whether on the floor, on the walls or even the ceiling.

Another eco-friendly option for cork flooring is the cork mosaic flooring. These floors are actually produced from recycled wine corks and cork waste to create beautiful, eco-friendly flooring. The wine corks are cut into discs and adhered to a backing to form unique mosaic patterns. You can read more about it - http://jelinek.com/flooring.htm#4

Hi Rob,
Thanks for telling the story of cork oak for flooring. It's nature's very own eco-friendly product. And with binders and finishes that have also been made with indoor air quality in mind, cork oak rises to the head of the class.
Cheers!

I have an outdoor project that I started two years ago, but I am over my head.
I wanted to know if your show will be having a "casting call" for people who live in the metropolitan atlanta area. I am actually 40minutes from Atlanta, Georgia. And my project in general would consist of a flag stone walk way and patio with a deck, built in BBQ with cabinets and countertop.
If you are looking for someone to be on the show, I would be more than happy.
Thank you, fondly Kimberly Pegues

Rob,

I am currently building a house and I am putiing in floor heat. I was wondering what is the best flooring to use (other than ceramic tile) with floor heat that will hold the warmth and won't dry out and crack?

Rob,

I really like the idea of tiling outdoors but I have seen so many projects on homes that have had water damage. Are you familiar with the Duradek outdoor floooring products and the tiledek specifically?

"Empire today " is doing a great job, Flooring samples displayed are excellent. The advantage of this feature is customers have a view of different designs and have a wide choice.

Great stuff Becky! Very interesting to see how the residential building industry is approaching green building. The corporate new construction LEED certification is slightly less interesting.

What do you mean by "Lippage? "

Anyhow, the standards engineered or prefinished products actually come from the manufacturers themselves. You would need to contact their technical department and check with them.

From what I know of my discussions with some of our sales guys, a lot of customers are actually looking for colour variations, for just the reasons you're talking about - because variety is fun, and uniformity is kind of dull. I think there's more of a movement toward natural materials these days, as opposed to vinyl tile, lino, and carpeting. So, I think a lot of people are beginning to adjust their expectations when it comes to the types of visual effects they're after.

Excellent article Rob. I just wanted to add one other benefit that helps millions of people. Hardwood flooring is allergy free. For people suffering from dust, pet dander, and that kind of allergy, there is nothing worse than carpet, and nothing better than a hardwood floor.

I believe what brings the most out of the natural stone products is those 4 words: durability, aesthetics and creativity, healthy. Natural stones offer a great variety, maybe one of the most useful materials, but still not valued well enough. I totally agree with Rob and would like to add as an expert that natural stones may be the defining content of one´s ambient. Wooden flooring and decoration may also be good, but it burns, gets second hand soon and keeps dirt. However, it is best for the dance stage and looks beautiful in certain ambients.

Dear Rob,
I have ceramic tile counter tops throughout my kitchen and LOVE IT!!! I am wanting to put ceramic tile on the floors in my den, without making it a radiant floor. I am concerned about how cold they would be in the winter months. And second, I have two dogs. On occasion they do have accidents. I am a concerned about the grout absorbing urine odor.Would I regret this route.

Thanks for such an informative blog about ceramic tiles. I hope i can see this blog two years before when i was building my house and was confused what to select ceramic tiles or wood for my kitchen. but Thanks to Ciciliot for clearing my confusion. It is very hard to find good help and that i found then.
Not many people have knowledge about ceramics and help of professional is mandatory in this regard.
