hi hannah! thank you so much for taking the time to register and to ask. love!

this could become really long and i will probably end up e-mailing you but i will give you some quick tips.

one: a good eye for style. obvious i know, but some people just don't have it.

two: it is all about who you know, unfortunately sometimes. but start networking now, pound the pavement. put yourself out there. get business cards made up.

three: preparation. start putting your book together now. find a good photographer just starting out, you can trade services. get a new model that needs pics and style her up right. is it a fashion stylist that you want to become? because there is a difference between commercial and fashion. you will also want to put images up on a website because practically everything is done over the web these days. unfortunately it can get pricey, so if you know someone good at that stuff, more power to you!

four: assist a stylist. this is how i got all of my experience. interning on movies and assisting a stylist and let me tell you, i have worked with some of the meanest stylists around. you really need a thick skin to be a stylist. it is hard work, a lot of pressure and not glamorous at all. really. i am not a fashion stylist as i don't like "the fashion world people" generally, they usually are catty and pretentious imo and that is not my style. but be prepared to work your ass off. it is a lot of physical work as well. if you need more info about assisting we can talk more on e-mail.

five: make contacts with designers. really important. you will need a big huge book of designer connections that you can pull from. once again, i am a commercial stylist so i buy things. i don't borrow.

six: you need good credit and at least a couple of credit cards with fairly high limits. stylists live off their credit, it is our livelihood and you cannot be a stylist without credit. period. so start working on that now too.

seven: get with an agency, if you want. they will get you more work than if you are on your own. i was never with an agency. but i happened to have some really good connections that were consistently working and i never wanted to feel like someone owned me.

you're welcome! i got a ba in fashion marketing and college was one of the best things i have ever done for myself. i learned a lot but more than anything i learned how to learn and to have a schedule. these things were invaluable.

but on another note, like i said it isn't necessary. most of my assistants had no schooling, they are just hard workers and quick learners. and after working with me for a while some of them have gone on and become amazing stylists. it's a great thing to see.

i am a big fan of any kind of schooling but it is certainly not necessary. getting a job as a p.a. or an intern is the best way to learn. this industry moves fast.
