Boy am I glad I found your site! I've learned a lot by reading through the blog about oral care. I'm blown away by your information and am excited to try your system. Already went to zelliescleanwhiteteeth.com and ordered products. I know you only recommend the Crest regular past, but I wanted to get your opinion on the toothpaste I have been using. Have you heard of or tried Sensé Natural Whitening toothpaste? Here's the list of ingredients:

Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) neutralize acids harmful to the teeth and gums. Alongside Hydrated Silica, they also act as abrasives to help scrub teeth clean.

Xylitol, Natural Flavor, Stevia and Sea Salt provide provide natural sweetening and flavor to the toothpaste.

Vegetable Glycerin, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate and Carageenan (Seaweed Extract) provide texture and stability to the toothpaste.

Titanium Dioxide is a natural mineral compound that provides color.

Sodium Benzoate is a preservative that helps keep the toothpaste free of harmful bacteria.

Poly C, Vitamin E and Green Tea Extract are antioxidants that may help support healthy gums. Green Tea Extract also reduces the adhesion of plaque and bacteria to teeth and gums.

Tetrapotassium Pyrophosphate assists in reducing the accumulation of tartar on the teeth.

Thank you so much for sharing your information. Please keep up your work.

JB L.Ac.
Acupuncturist, Nutriceutical Specialist

Hi JB,

Thanks for your message. I am very familiar with Sense products and I love many of their skin care items and their associated Young Living products.

However - my system will not work with this toothpaste.

If you have great teeth - this toothpaste may work for you, but if you have sensitive teeth, gum recession or cavities - then change and use the toothpaste and regimen that I recommend!!

My issues with this paste would be the inclusion of sodium bicarbonate ( which I do not recommend for women) and glycerin ( which I believe can prevent remineralization of teeth)

I know it is exciting to see some "great sounding" ingredients, but in my system of oral care - I have only found one toothpaste that will work.

You decide - and remember that if you have great oral health - the last thing I want to do is change you from the products you are using.

On the other hand, if you are fighting any kind of oral health problem - then I suggest you give my "system" a try!

Hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Ellie:

Hi

I've just ordered your system for my wife and myself.

I've seen oral care products that have calcium and phosphate advertised. Is there any advantage to using these also?

For instance <http://www.recaldent.com/index.html> and <http://www.caphosol.com/us/> to mention a couple.

Thanx...

C

Dear C:

Most of these 'remineralizing" agents are no more than dried milk powder!

If you eat whole dairy foods (cheese, yogurt, milk) then you should have plenty of calcium and phosphates in your diet.

Try to protect your teeth from acidity and dryness - this is far more important than using these (unnecessary) products.

I do not like to get between you and products that have been recommended by your health professional - but remember, these expensive products are expensive because the manufacturers spend a lot of money advertising to dentists! The ADA also holds the intellectual property patent on these products - so they get touted in dental circles all the time.

I suggest my system, a good diet, check your vitamin and mineral intake, rest, relax and keep your toothbrush spotless!

Thanks so much for your question. I would spend my money on some tasty European cheese to nibble - and not this expensive toothpaste/rinses!

Ellie

I started on your system about five days ago and am very excited and hopeful.

I am a 52 year old female and had some deep cleaning (root planing) done several months back, along with some topical antibiotic treatments. When I went in for a checkup 3 months ago the dental hygienist cleaned and checked the pockets and once again wanted to apply topical antibiotic treatments. They are very expensive so I only had her do the 3 worst gums.

My questions is; I am going for another cleaning tomorrow and would like to know your opinion on the topical antibiotics. Do I really need them or can I clear out that bacteria myself using your protocol?

Thanks so much for your time and again for all the wonderful information.

P

Hi P,

My system has healed pocketing up to 8-9 mm with no additional therapies.

This is unheard of in the dental world - so don't expect to get any encouragement from your health professionals.

Even my partner in my office (who has witnessed these events) shakes his head at me - because treatment would have generated thousands of dollars - and I send patients out with $50 worth of product to use.

I am in the process of trying to take pathogen tests to SHOW these improvements in a visual way - with results that cannot be contested.

This involves taking an Oral DNA test - to measure the germs in the mouth - before and after the use of my system.

I have some re-tests coming up soon - and I hope they will show my system is powerful and gets rid of pesky germs that cause so much damage to your gums and health.

I do not recommend antibiotics personally at this time.

If you do decide to have them - you have to realize that they are going to be a temporary fix.

Xylitol and my complete mouth care system is a way to sustainable oral health - for a lifetime.

If you need some help with products, how much xylitol to take or other coaching - I would be delighted to help you.

Best wishes,

Hi Dr. Ellie,

My 18 month old daughter just went to the dentist. I was concerned because of some spots on her teeth. I wipe her teeth down after every meal and brush her teeth every night in the tub with training toothpaste. She is still nursing during the day and frequently at night. Our dentist told me that she required four crowns for her four front teeth and he blamed nursing for it. I then spoke with a holistic doctor who told me that tooth decay in baby teeth is reversible. I want to try everything I can before I subject her to major oral surgery. I was hoping you could help me out. We recently started using Coral White Toothpaste with xylitol (after every meal and before bed), Bamboo silica, Flaxseed oil, coconut oil and coconut milk. The holistic doctor also recommended colloidal silver spray. I have read your recommendations online about rinsing her mouth with xylitol after meals and will begin that as well. Also cleaning her toothbrush after every use. Can I use ACT mouthwash on an 18 month old? I would really like to get a second opinion from a dentist, but would like to see if we can reverse some of her tooth decay first. How long until we see some effect? How will I know if it is working? Would you be able to recommend a dentist in the El Paso area? Is there anything else that I should be doing? Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do. We are willing to do anything.

Thank you so much.

D

Hi D,

Xylitol is most effective when it is used in adequate amounts and when you have enough frequency of use.

Multiple applications are needed - don't rely on the toothpaste (and I have no experience of this paste - why does it say white? No baking soda or peroxide I hope).

I suggest lots of xylitol exposures - a 1/8th teaspoon granular xylitol after meals, or in water as a drink - Zellies fruit mints - it does not matter.

My daughter dips a toothbrush into the xylitol granules and my grandson sucks the brush for his "xylitol"

Since you have spots that need to remineralize I suggest some ACT bubblegum rinse - used on a toothbrush - and brushed on these teeth.

The xylitol helps to heal deeper layers of the tooth and ACT heals the outer layer - the skin of the tooth.

I recommend ACT for kids when they have damaged teeth or white spots.

You need the ACT or you will not get quick enough healing to prevent this damage

I do NOT agree that nursing is the problem. Cavities are a bacterial disease - and the problem is that your daughter has picked up this disease - from someone in the family or a caretaker/babysitter.

ALL the family must start using xylitol and realize that cavities are a transmissible infection.

The breast milk just happens to be full of great and healthy sugars for the baby - but nasty cavity bacteria also love breast milk - and grow on it.

Xylitol will wipe out these harmful bacteria in about a month - so have your daughter wipe he teeth, sip and enjoy xylitol - then the breast milk WILL NOT HARM THE TEETH!!!@!!

Hope this helps,

Yes, you can reverse the cavities - once you have stopped the infection.

xylitol- xylitol - xylitol.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Best Wishes,

Hi Dr. Ellie,

My daughter is 28 months old. She was breastfed (including night time) and her father and I have terrible teeth (cavities/periodontal issues). She now drinks from a cup, doesn't drink anything other than milk and water. Until about a month ago her teeth were perfectly white-that's when a little orange/brown spot appeared on one of her front top teeth near the gum line. At the same time I noticed some white along the gum line on her two front teeth. I tried brushing it off but it wouldn't come off. Now that her teeth have come out further the white is no longer near the gums-both front teeth have a thin white line across them. I don't want to take her to a "traditional" dentist (which seems to be all we have in this area) because I'm concerned they will do more harm than good. I have been giving her 6.5g of Zellies Xylitol throughout the day and rubbing ACT on her teeth with a q-tip in the morning and before bed for about two weeks. Today I'm noticing more white along the gums in her bottom teeth. Is there anything else I can do to try to stop this process on my own?

Thanks in advance.

N

Hi N,

Cavities start as a softening of the tooth surface - and as the teeth soften, they look white and chalky.

The next step is that the tooth surface caves in - forming a cavity.

This is totally reversible - and the sooner the tooth is helped - the quicker the healing.

The first thing to realize is that this damage is being caused by germs.

These mouth germs float around in your saliva, but they also stick to the surface of teeth and make acids - that damage the teeth.

You and your husband are infecting you baby's mouth with germs from your own cavities and bad teeth.

THE ONLY WAY to stop this infection is to clean up everyone's mouth!

The great ( and amazing) news is that one teaspoon of xylitol each day - can do that for everyone!!!!

You and your husband should add a teaspoon of xylitol crystals/granular to water and sip this during the morning - think of this as a "health drink" - that you drink FOR your child - so she can be healthier.

You and he can also enjoy Zellies mints and gum after meals - but use the crystals to ensure you have enough xylitol each day.

Now you and your husband will be controlling the spread of cavity infection - even if you still have bad teeth and/or cavities that are not filled.

( I would like you to use my complete mouth care system - but we can talk about this later!!)

I suggest you continue what you are already doing.

Wipe these teeth with a little of the ACT rinse a couple of times a day.

Put a tiny bit on xylitol into drinks - and ensure that you end EVERY meal or snack with a little xylitol.

Does your daughter take vitamins (I don't know where you live) but sunshine and vitamin D is important for tooth health.

Whole organic dairy is also helpful - does she like yogurts?

Zellies is launching a new product in a couple of weeks - ZELLIEBEARS - for kids.

These "quick dissolving" bears provide 1.4 grams of xylitol in each delicious bear.

If you like - she could end each meal with one of these - after breakfast, lunch and dinner.

This will be a new line for Zellies - helping Moms and Dads with a simple remedy to get enough xylitol to your child each day.

We expect to start shipping this product on December 1st - so stay tuned for details!

Hope this helps - a picture of the problem teeth would be useful if you need more help.

Best wishes,

Ellie

Hi Dr. Philips,

I've ready your book and have followed your blogs. Thanks very much for the work you are doing in educating people about how to care for their teeth and health.

My son, husband and I are all on the program. We have been giving our son a small amount of xylitol after each meal/snack and have been brushing his teeth with it at night. It's been working like a charm and his teeth look wonderful. My husbands teeth and mine are looking so much better now too. Sensitivity is all gone. Floss comes out clean. Teeth are starting to look white. I'm convinced your program also saved me in the nick of time from another filing. All this within less than a year.

However, despite my best efforts, we had a little incident over the weekend whereby my son (16 months old with lots of energy and not so much co-ordination) fell and did a face-plant right into the tile foor in our kitchen. At first I didn't notice that he damaged his teeth but later that night when I went to brush his teeth I notice that one had been slightly chipped up the side of the tooth near the bottom (where the front two teeth meet). To be honest, I thought he had a small bit of white food stuck in between his teeth at first but I realized later, it was the way the tooth chipped.

I took him to the dentist today and x-rays were taken. Turns out the tooth was fractured, but the dentist said it was not into the pulp or root of the tooth (phew!). The dentist said I had two choices, he said that baby teeth were very vascular, and could heal themselves unlike adult teeth (guess he hasn't read your book). He says the fracture isn't bad, we could leave it and monitor it over time to see how it heals. He said the risk would be that the tooth may change color (gray) and he may need to do a pulpectomy in the worst case. The second option, was to as he put "cosmetically" repair the tooth and fill it. The benefit would be that there would be less potential for complications down the road if we went with option #2 (i.e., pulpectomy may be avoided all together); however, the second option involves more risk in my mind as it requires sedation at a hospital which I would like to avoid (esp. after reading your book and blogs). The dentist's recommendation was to leave the tooth as it was for now, and monitor it. He suggested that I only feed my son soft foods for the next two weeks to give the tooth a chance to heal. The dentist recommended that I go back to him again in 2 weeks, then 3 months then 6 months to have the tooth monitored.

I know you can't get between a patient and a Dr. in terms of the advice you can provide. But I do respect your opinion and would appreciate any thoughts you might have to offer on the situation. Any other helpful remedies or concerns would also be appreciated.

My feeling is that the tooth is sound, and that we wait to see how things go rather than risk the sedation. My son is acting normally, eating normally and not showing any sign of tooth pain. I think that we are doing all we can right now with the use xylitol (to kill bacteria/prevent dental caries and heal the tooth). Since the incident, I've also picked up a bottle of bubble gum Act and have been brushing his teeth with this as an added measure (specifically making sure that fractured tooth gets the first coat). :)

I was also told by the dentist that this type of injury (and worse than what my son had) is very common in children of this age. This might be a stupid question but any thing you can recommend from your years of practice to help prevent this in the future (appart from the obvious like try to baby proof as much as possible). My son is very fast, and not very careful and I'm very worried this (or worse) will happen again in the future. All it took for the incident in the kitchen to occur was a fast (and not so careful baby), a misplaced parental foot and a tile floor. :) I joked with my husband yesterday that we might need to by him a baby mouth guard.

Sincerely,

C

Hi C,

I am sorry that this incident happened for your son, but I am thrilled that you have a dentist who gave you truthful options.

I think that the idea to wait is probably the best way to go - and this is what I would recommend, if something like this happened to one of my grandchildren.

Baby teeth rarely die - so even if the tooth turns gray - it may recover and become normal again.

A little tooth can look "bruised" and go from gray to yellowish - like a bruise and then recover completely - so don't be discouraged if the tooth turns darker.

I like the sound of your dentist - and I totally agree that avoiding a sedation is the main goal.

The other idea - not to fix - avoids putting a white filling on the tooth ( and white fillings contain BPA).

I am sure that everything will resolve - and this is just the training, we parents have to endure, as our kids get hurt in the process called life!

When my son was at high-school we used to park our car facing the emergency room - because every game seemed to end up there!

The good news is that he grew up to be a good looking, fun and well adjusted person ( with a couple of chipped teeth).

Thanks for putting your confidence in my opinion.

It sounds as if you are making great choices and doing everything right.

I have always taken good care of my teeth but i've had cavities, crowns, and receding gum lines.

I read your website extensively before I started the system 6 months ago. I was aware that I might get black staining after starting the system. I did, it came off after my first teeth cleaning and my teeth looked great.

after 3 months of my cleaning i got the black stains again. They look pretty horrible, I just went in and got another cleaning.

I have been using the correct products..I use the blue original listerene. could this be causing such intense staining? or do you think it might be the clo-sys? I stopped by wallgreens today and bought the gold colored listerine.

I want to keep doing the system, I love it and I think it really helps.

ps I found out a year ago that i have celicas disease. I'm not sure what the dental community thinks about celiacs but I think it has been a big factor with my troublesome teeth

Thank you for your time.

DD

Hi DD,

Thanks for your message - I am glad that the staining did not make you too worried - and that you realize there is a time line - related to the slow death of harmful and infected plaque bacteria.

I do happen to think that the yellow Listerine is slightly better at keeping teeth whiter and causing less staining.

However, I think the problem is that you are getting "re-infected".

Check that you clean your toothbrush every day - keep away from any toilet area in the bathroom - allow to dry between uses - and don't kiss anyone with bad teeth (or get them on the program also!)

The removal of bacteria is normally a 6 month process.

This process takes time because it starts with the bacteria on teeth - but then the xylitol has to deal with more stubborn germs that are in the skin of the mouth and tongue, in saliva and up in your ears, sinus, nose and throat passages. These areas are all connected - and germs spread everywhere. Even if your teeth are clean, they becomes re-infected from these other areas and the germs try to attach to your teeth again etc.etc.

If you are aware of sinus, nasal drip, or ear problems - I suggest using xylitol as a nasal spray ( at least for the first 6 months) in a big effort to eradicate this disease from your digestive tract. YES - your nose and mouth are basically the entrance to your digestive tract and need to be clean - (especially if you have digestive problems - this is very important).

The secret to preventing re-infection is the following:

Make sure to have ENOUGH xylitol each day.

If you find the gum and mints are too expensive - then go to a health food store and purchase a one pound bag of pure xylitol crystals ( about $10 for a three month supply).

Make sure it is not a mix of xylitol/Splenda or xylitol/sand( silica). Both products are in the marketplace - and must be avoided.

One teaspoon of xylitol each day will give you enough xylitol to control an oral problem - BUT NOT if you put it into tea, coffee, lemonade etc.

You need to put the xylitol into water - and sip this "oral health drink" during the morning - or better yet, over a long extended period of time - keep it handy and have a little after eating or drinking each meal, snack - after anything and everything. Make sure to finish your "xylitol health drink" by the end of the day so that you have had your daily "dose" of xylitol.

Interestingly people with Celiacs disease find that sipping of xylitol helps their digestion considerably - especially if they take probiotics at the same time.

Let me know how this goes - but don't stop - you cannot afford to have cavities, crowns or receding gums. This is all preventable.

And please don't listen to the latest "hygienist hype" about peroxide and baking soda - please!!!

I believe that Arm and Hammer has some deal with the ADA since there is so much hype and bad information out there - I have SEEN the damage these products cause.

No whitening, no peroxide, no baking soda - PLEASE!!!!

I hope you will find this useful information,

Please let me know if you have any other questions,

Best wishes,
I am so happy to stumble across your work-- I knew there must be something I could do to help heal my super sensitive teeth. My problem is anything sweet results in severe tooth pain turning into severe headaches. I have had to stop eating all fruit-- so I cannot figure out how I can use the xylitol without really severe pain. I am hoping you have some advice for me-- thanks so much for your work.

Sincerely,

A

Hi A

I would like to know a bit more about your tooth sensitivity so I could tailor a specific answer for you.

For a quick response - I would advise that you put xylitol crystals into water and sip this between meals.

I would also put you immediately on my complete mouth care system of rinses with the EXACT products that I recommend.

The only variance would be that you could dilute the Listerine 50% with water - until the sensitivity goes away.

Make sure if you use the rinses - do not interspace with water between the rinses!!

Go from Closys to brush - rinse the toothpaste off with the Listerine and then immediately to the ACT rinse.

Do this twice a day - no more. !!! Go on a flossing holiday.

Get started with a good diet of Omega-3 foods, and fermented whole milk dairy ( like organic yogurt) with fresh pineapple mixed into the yogurt.

A probiotic may also be helpful. This dietary information is to help you GROW a protein/healthy bacteria layer over your teeth - to help heal the gums and teeth.

DO NOT use any peroxide or baking soda - in any kind of product!!!

In about two or three days you will probably be able to start using Zellies xylitol gum and mints.

Hi Ellie,

When do you rinse with water?

Between each time you use a product or do you not rinse at all?

I'm not clear...

Thank you,

ro

Hi,

NO - You do not rinse at all !!!

You go from Closys to brushing ( after you spit the Closys out, of course).

Brush all around and over your teeth.

Spit out the big glob of toothpaste - (but DO NOT rinse with any water).

Use Listerine to rinse the toothpaste off your teeth - ( use vigorous rinsing with this liquid 'cos it is liquid flossing!!)

Then spit out the Listerine and immediately rinse with the ACT.

This will make you want to say "ahhh -that feels good".

Let the ACT "soak" into your teeth for a minute - spit out, spit out again and maybe even a third time.

BUT.......... NO water - NO rinsing - one step of this system leads directly into the next.

Hope this answers your question,

Ellie

Dr. Ellie,

Can you tell me your opinion of electric toothbrushes and whether one could use them with your mouth care system?

I'd very much appreciate hearing your thoughts on them.

CH

Hi CH,

Research shows that it does not matter what kind of brush you use - a manual brush can be just as effective as any rotary/electric one.

The most important thing about a toothbrush is that you disinfect it each day - ( in Listerine) rinse out and store it so it can dry between uses. Never store under a cover or in a bag.

Keep toothbrushes away from the toilet area of a bathroom - at least 6 feet away from a toilet - since this plumes bacteria all around during a flush. I often recommend that brushes are stored in a bedroom window - or maybe your toothbrushing routine is transfered to a kitchen area.

The last thing to remember is that gum disease bacteria transfer from person to person during a kiss or when sharing food. Adults need to realize this when they cuddle children - and be concerned if they are passing gum disease germs to the next generation.

So - the story of toothbrushes is not about the kind you have, nor the action that you use - but how well your toothbrush is maintained! I offer a box of 25 toothbrushes on my website. These Zellies brushes are terrific - and only $25 for the box full! http://www.zelliescleanwhiteteeth.com/p-188-pack-of-25-count-tooth-brushes-.aspx

This way you can throw your brushes away when you travel and change them often - because they cost so little. There is also an antibacterial toothbrush called the Mouthwatchers brush - which is antibacterial - and that is an interesting brush that I endorse also.

Hope this answers your question,

Ellie

I’ve been on your system for approximately 6 months, and everything seems to be going pretty good (I have a Dentist appointment next month to see for sure). After reading a post on your blog regarding Coconut Oil (and how it helped a person’s gums), I had a question. Do you feel that Coconut oil has benefits if used for gently brushing (as was mentioned by someone on your blog)? I’m not thinking of replacing any of your system, this brushing would not be part of my usual routine (Closys, Crest, Listerine, ACT). I’m thinking just one or twice a week, in the afternoon.

In my research on the web regarding Coconut Oil, I came across a topic called “Oil Pulling.” I was wondering if you were familiar with this? Apparently, this is just swishing Coconut Oil around in your mouth for around 20 Minutes.

If either of these sound like they might have benefits, do you have any recommendation of when or how often I should do it?

If you don’t have an opinion on these, that’s OK, too. I just thought I’d bring it up to you, since I really trust your counsel on dental matters.

Thanks for your time, and I’ll let you know how my 6 month appointment goes!

TS

Hi TS,

I am familiar with Oil Pulling and have read quite a lot about it.

I think that coconut oil may work well to help "pull" harmful bacteria from periodontal pockets - and in this way it could be a home remedy to prevent gum disease getting worse.

I have tried coconut oil pulling myself but feel that a long routine on this product would be a time-consuming challenge!

( I prefer to trust Closys - which I believe works in a similar way - but works more gently and more quickly).

I do think that coconut oil helps get rid of staining and maybe helps loosen calculus deposits.

I am unsure and I worry that coconut oil may be too aggressive for regular use.

In the same way I believe that baking soda may work for a one-time use but should NOT to be used regularly, because it appears to work against the development of the healthy protein film you need for sustainable oral health.

What I found after using the coconut oil was that my teeth (which are usually very comfortable) were a bit "raw" and sensitive for a few days.

This is why I view it as a help - but use sparingly - and not too often.

I think you will find that my system does everything you need! Remember to disinfect your toothbrush regularly - very important and often forgotten!

Best wishes,

Ellie

Dear Dr. Ellie:

An interesting tidbit of information to update: I asked my hygienist and periodontist via email if they had an opinion on using a stabilized chlorine dioxide rinse (Closys) as an alternative to chlorhexidine, as it is tasteless, doesn't stain teeth and has research to support it as a good alternative. She said she had never heard of it, but would check it out with the periodontist. So, having never heard of it before and looking at the research, the message back from their office is that it "sounds good." So now I can stick with the system and be compliant with their advise! And all it took was a bit of the-patient-educating-the-doctor! :0)

K

Dear K:

What a relief! If your dentist wants more research - they can look into the company that makes Closys ( Rowpar Pharmaceuticals) and visit their professional website. The only problem is that the next time your dentist will probably be recommending the Closys toothpaste! Ha! (It comes free when dentists order from the company!)

Chlorhexidine is not very effective, and I worry about it's use - ever since a lady in UK died recently from rinsing with Chlorhexidine.

They may not know about that story either!

Dear Dr. Ellie:

Why do you recommend using ACT Anticavity Fluoride Rinse, even though it contains saccharine? Is there something else I can use that contains no artificial sweeteners?

- T

Hi T

My system works and my book, Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye describes in 200 pages why I recommend the products that I recommend.

I am also sure that I have answered the sorbitol question a number of times on my blog site www.DrEllie.com if you would be kind enough to look there.

Basically the system I recommend works like a recipe - and having the ingredients "exact" is essential.

I recommend specific toothpaste and mouth rinses - and they all contain ingredients I would not want to eat!

Fortunately after using them we spit them out - so the effect is not the same as if we ate or consumed them.

I wish I could recommend totally natural food products - but I have not found a way to oral health using only food products.

I do know that if you follow the directions I give - your oral health will improve, cavities can heal, and gum disease will go away.

If you add other nutritional supplements and lifestyle habits - your results can be even more spectacular.

Let me know if you think some personal coaching would be helpful - I charge $110 for a half hour.

Telephone appointments can be set up through my website www.DrEcoaching.com and I would be happy to answer any of your question in detail.

Dear Dr. Ellie Phillips,

My doctor has recommended I start your Complete Mouth Health Care System.

I have looked at your website and read the information about the system and I have two questions:

Since my dentist has for years strongly recommended I floss between my teeth at least once a day, I'm wondering why you do not recommend flossing and what your opinion is of it.

I look forward to your reply.

C

Hi C,

The products and method that I recommend are specifically designed to help people achieve total oral health.

To me, this means a mouth condition where your teeth teeth and gums remain healthy and comfortable, year after year.

My concern is far beyond teeth - I worry about the impact of teeth and gums on general health.

I work very hard to stop inflammation in the mouth - since that can damage other parts of your body.

I have always argued that if your gums bleed and if you have a gum infection or inflammation - the last thing you want to do is floss the germs deeper into gum tissues.

The use of the protocol I recommend will get rid of the infection and inflammation in your gums and the plaque on and around your teeth.

When you develop a healthy mouth chemistry (with regular use of sufficient xylitol) this will keep your teeth and gums healthy and protect them.

You have to ask yourself why you are flossing.

If you are trying to improve the health of your gums with floss it most likely will not work. My system most certainly will work if it is used exactly and correctly.

If you are getting bits of food out from between teeth after eating - then flossing gently should be no problem.

Ardent flossers, with no gum disease, can certainly continue flossing.

The best time to do this is before using the system - before the Closys step.

Ensure that you do not use a water rinse between the steps, ensure that you keep your toothbrush disinfected and also that you have a good place to store it - away from the toilet.

Dental disease is preventable - and I coach people to ultimate oral health.

If you would like more information and discuss flossing and extra ways to improve your mouth health - I would be delighted to help you.

The prices for my telephone coaching programs are listed at my website: www.DrEcoaching.com

Thanks again for your message,

Best wishes,

Ellie

Thank you for responding [to a previous email] I know you are busy.

There was just one thing missing that I wanted to know form you. If there is a cavity already in the dentin of the tooth. Would it require a filling, or could using your system "clean" the tooth like you said in your response below?

Any cavity too big to repair will not get worse - but it will get "cleaner" and the enamel and dentin will be "stronger" and the gums "healthier" if you do eventually need to have a filling.

I see no down side to getting started as soon as possible.

Thanks,

A

Hi A,

There are numerous factors that determine the amount and speed of a cavity repair.

In the old days when dentists didn't understand that acidity was the problem, they would eliminate sugar - but that is unable to control a cavity.

Until recently dentists believed that once bacteria were into the dentin, the cavity would continue to move towards the center of the tooth.

This was because they did not have xylitol to inactivate and kill the bacteria - but when you use xylitol things are different!!

First project

Before healing can begin it is necessary to kill the lead bacteria at the dentin junction.

This involves frequent use of xylitol - at least 5 grams and at least 5 times a day - especially after meals.

It takes about a month (4/5 weeks) - depending on the amount of infection. One small new cavity will be less infection that say, 15 aging cavities.

Xylitol can stop the progress of a lesion - and any dentist who does not "believe" this is possible, has probably never tried 100 percent xylitol and the combined use of my mouth rinse system.

I expect ( but have no proof) that Closys is an important component in this "cleaning" process, since it oxidizes the mouth - and gets rid of the worst germs that are anaerobes.

Next is Repair

Repair will be slower or inadequate if there is too much ongoing and conflicting damage.

If someone continues to drink soda, or juice etc or when they do not seek the underlying REASON and DO SOMETHING to control this damage - there may be too much damage to counter the repair.

A cavity is always the final result of a battle between a daily amount of natural repair ( which happens in every mouth to some extent) and the daily amount of damage done to that tooth.

"Encouraging" bacteria with an acidic environment or frequent "feeding" with carbohydrates simply encourages a cavity to develop and not repair.

To make repair happen more quickly it is necessary to control mouth acidity as much as possible ( ? changing a damaging habit or routine - e.g. drink juice during a meal rather than drink it as a snack)

It is also helpful to stimulate natural healing by using my mouth rinse system.

Together, the use of xylitol with my rinse system provides tools to stop and reverse cavities.

Dilute fluoride works to heal the outer shell of a tooth - but does nothing to kill the cavity bacteria nor heal the deeper part of the tooth.

Going back to the old days - generally it was only fluoride that was available to stimulate this healing of teeth.

When fluoride is used alone - only the outer part of the tooth will heal.

This is where the notion of partial healing was developed - if only fluoride is used - you do not get the deeper part of the tooth cleaned or healed.

Hope this explains the way it is - and why it is hard to give a definite answer - since it depends on how involved and motivated the patient is!

Best Wishes,

Dear Dr. Ellie:

I drink lots of water daily and would like to know if I should eat a xylitol mint after each time or is it when I drink something other than water and have something to eat.

- A

Dear A:

It may be useful to check the acidity of the water you are drinking - it may surprise you to find that some water is very acidic!

If your water is acidic - you need to protect your teeth when you drink it - just like anything acidic.

Evian and Fiji waters are alkaline ( their pH is usually 7.2-7.4 and is probably noted on the label or website)

Your teeth will benefit from alkaline water.

Another idea is to put a small amount of xylitol crystals into the water that you drink.

This can be sipped during the day - so that you consume 1-2 teaspoons over the course of the day.

Xylitol added to water is very useful to do if you have gum disease or gum inflammation - it is very cleansing and healing for the mouth.

Older adults will usually benefit from using xylitol in water in this way.

Thanks so much for your question,

Ellie

I am about to start your system, so I have purchased on-line the UK version of it ( I live in Spain). I was just checking the ingredients of the Retardex Toothpaste and it contains Sodium Bicarbonate. Then is it better not to use it?

- L

Dear L:

I think it is better to use regular Crest or Colgate toothpaste - because these pastes contain silica and sodium fluoride.

The purpose of paste is to coat and protect your teeth before you rinse with Listerine.

You need silica and sodium fluoride for tooth protection.

Closys toothpaste is only a recommendation for people who will not use my entire system - people prone to gum disease who need something as simple as possible.

It is not my recommendation -because I do not think it offers enough protection when used as PART of my system.

We need something different from a paste that is part of my system -and I prefer Crest Cavity Protection or a plain Colgate is an acceptable substitute if that is all you have available.

I am almost done with your book and I am so excited to try your routine. I have had multiple dentists tell me there is nothing I can do more for my teeth than floss and brush and some people just have bad teeth so I need to live with it. I knew there had to be more out there than this answer. My friend told me about your book and I am so grateful she did. It has openned my eyes to so many things about oral health care. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and studies.

Sincerely,

SW

Hi SW,

Thanks for your message.

I am sure you will be excited when you see what this system can do for your oral health.

Think about is how vital oral health is to general health - accepting disease is not an option!

Below is an example of the messages I receive all the time - here is one from YESTERDAY - from the medical director of the Heart Attack and Stroke Prevention Center in Spokane WA:

Hello Ellie, I hope you are doing well.

I have come to the conclusion that ALL my patients need to read your book and do your program.

I tell them to go and buy your book and show them my copy (I have also loaned it out). I have been doing Oral DNA and I can’t imagine why everyone wouldn’t benefit from your program and reading your book. I know (Dr.) Brad (Bale) is doing the same in his practice.

Amy L. Doneen, M.S.N, A.R.N.P

Medical Director
Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center
Spokane, WA 99204

It is important to follow my system EXACTLY (like a cake recipe) if you want to see results and the ultimate success in the shortest possible time.

It will be great if you can go back and WOW your dentist at the next visit!

You can - I am sure!!

Here is a link to the cliff notes of the book - so that you can see images of the items you need:

http://www.drellie.com/pdfs/The-Kissing-System/Complete-Mouth-Care-System-Cliff-Notes-Version.pdf

I suggest purchasing a kit from us the first time - then you can go to the store or order in bulk as you get more familiar with the products you need.

It is so important to get the correct toothpaste, the correct ACT etc.

Closys is only available in Walgreens Stores or sometimes from your own dentist through dental supply companies.

You need to have enough xylitol each day. Xylitol makes plaque slippery - so it can rinse off your teeth.

Multiple exposures to xylitol is much more effective - and if you are chewing gum ( the gum does NOT have titanium dioxide in it) but this is a LOT of gum!

I suggest you get granular xylitol crystals and make an "oral health drink" each morning.

Put a teaspoon (4 grams) into a bottle of water - and sip this during the morning.

Then enjoy a couple of mints or a piece of gum for the rest of the day after meals and snacks.

This way you will ensure you have at least 6 grams every day in multiple exposures - without chewing and chewing!

Make sure to clean your toothbrush and keep it away from others who may be infecting you.

Oral disease is contagious and transmissible.

Chlorine dioxide (Closys) is a wonderful product - and basically gives your mouth an oxygen bath before you start brushing.

Anaerobic bacteria are some of the worst bacteria - but they will go away with this rinse - use it unflavored and BEFORE you start brushing.

Hope this explains!

If you need more help or have other questions - I do offer personal coaching through my coaching website www.DrEcoaching.com

Most people find that half an hour can put them on a better road - and we cover lots of other things that help - like nutrition, supplements etc that may be of interest to you.

Thanks again,

I know you carry your own line of toothbrushes, but I have been using this three-sided tooth brush now for almost 20 years (not the same one!) The toothbrush is called "dentrust". It cleans all exposed surfaces of your teeth and gums all at the same time, and the bristles are made out of something that is softer than nylon. It's so much faster and efficient than normal style tooth brushes, that I can never stand to go back to normal brushes, or even electric. I was wondering if you had heard of these brushes, or can comment on the design? I don't know why these brushes came off the store shelves a long time ago, but they are still being sold online, and the dentist who invented them, Dr. Nipp is still practicing in Seaside, Oregon. So I guess what I am asking is, since you being very intelligent and innovative doctor, what you thought. Thanks for your help!

Here's their website: http://www.dentrust.com

Thank you,

Sincerely,
RJ

Hi RJ,

This brush is interesting - and may be good.

I have asked for a couple to be sent to me - so I can try them.

I don't think brushing is as important as dentists have believed all these years - it is more about the whole mouth biochemistry and infection - rather than scrubbing and brushing.

I like the concept of this brush and also the product description - I will let you know!

Just be careful to disinfect your brush often - and store it far away from any toilet area.

Tooth brushes must dry between uses - bacteria die when they dry.

Thanks again for introducing me to this brush,

In brief, I had increasingly worse pocket measurements and was seeing no improvement with flossing as my dentist kept on telling me.

I found your book, started your program, and 2-3 months into it, had my gums measured and they had not improved. They were all 4, 5, and one 6. My dentist gave me a deep cleaning, and here's the latest installment, 3 months later...)

After being absolutely meticulous in doing your complete regime (not even skipping one day), that 6mm pocket has become a 3! I even have one measurement of a 1mm pocket! I am getting an Oral DNA test next Wednesday, so I'll be able to tell you about that soon too (hopefully it will also be good news.) I had been also been flossing once a day so I wouldn't have to lie to my dentist, but I have stopped flossing now and my gums feel even better.

So I am utterly grateful and very, very happy. I skipped out of the dental office :)

I do have some more questions which are all over the map. I would be very glad to give you payment to answer these because you've helped me so much. It seems only fair. If you'd prefer to talk rather than email, I'd be glad to do that too. Let me know what is easiest for you. Take your time in responding too -- none of this is urgent.

1) I am a strict vegetarian, verging on vegan, both for health reasons and mainly for my ethical and environmental beliefs. I worry that the lack of dairy in my diet may effect my teeth, but I do make sure to eat lots of alkaline foods and finish my meals with raw veggies, nuts, or an apple as you suggest. Have you seen any major negative effects in dental health due to absence of dairy?

2) Rinsing my sonicare toothbrush head in Listerine every night and putting it on my window sill is fading the "indicator" bristles much faster than normal. Does this mean I should replace it more often, because the bristles are being worn down, or is it OK to still just replace it every 3 months?

3) My dentist is really pleased that I am using Closys, which she loves. She says she's noticed that people using it a lot can be more susceptible to staining though. I think this is true in my case -- the upper part of my bottom teeth, and the lower part of my upper teeth, where the enamel is thinner, is becoming a bit grey. I don't drink coffee, tea, or wine, so what else could explain it?

4) My dentist is also still recommending Invisalign due to some crowding in my mouth. I have found out that it does not contain BPA but I am still not keen in having plastic in my mouth every night for the rest of my life. I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about the matter.

5) Finally, I have slightly yellow hard enamel at the top of two teeth, which is apparently due to a "buckle". I could choose to get a filling over these. Would that be purely cosmetic, or would you see some benefit in the hygiene aspect?

Feel free not to answer any of these questions -- I realize you do not want to interfere with dentist-patient relationships and I respect that. I just would love a second opinion because I feel a bit lost in making such important decisions.

With very best and warm wishes,

S

Hi S,

I am delighted to hear your news!

I would also very happy to arrange a consultation with you - if you decide to do this.

If you want to talk - the best way is to schedule a time through my "coaching" website DrEcoaching.com.

http://www.drecoaching.com/ask.html#packages

You may want to wait and think about any final questions you want to ask - so we could tie up all the loose ends.

It would be fun to speak person to person and we might figure out some of the small accessory things that could make a difference.

For example, one lady was seeing great improvement but in our conversation mentioned her blocked sinus.

Now with the use of a xylitol nasal spray - things have DRAMATICALLY improved for her.

looking back I think 60 % of her problems were from allergies/fungus in her sinuses that were infecting her mouth.

Vegan diet: I think a vegan diet is very hard to balance.

I believe you have to know a lot more about diet than normal mix-food eaters.

Usually I think vegans can be short on protein, adequate fats and probiotics.

I could give you alternatives for the yogurt, fish oil and fish based products and proteins that I normally recommend.

Vitamin D is another concern.

From a dental standpoint - you need to ensure you have enough proteins - to build the protective layer of proteins in your mouth that will sustain your oral health.

I usually suggest organic, whole milk yogurt - goat or cow based - we would have to consider alternatives.

Fermented dairy foods appear to quickly add the probiotic cultures that I believe are essential for oral health balance - and work to benefit gut bacteria health - which may be closely related to oral health.

Alkaline foods are good and this is how I begin to teach the first level of oral health knowledge.

On the other hand, fats, proteins and probiotics need to be addressed for oral health for the next level of knowledge.

There seems a strong relationship between oral health - vitamin D, C and bromalain.

Changing your Toothbrush: I would not worry about "indicator" bristles fading on a toothbrush.

It is more important to clean your brush daily - especially when you are fighting to remove pathogens from your gums.

The idea of replacing a toothbrush every 3 months is insignificant in contrast to the need to disinfect a toothbrush and move it from a toilet area.

I have never seen ANY research to support a 3 month toothbrush change - just great marketing!!!

Staining: The staining will continue until you have stabilized and overcome the plaque infection in your mouth.

Maybe increase the amount of xylitol each day - by adding a teaspoon to water and sip this during the day - in addition to some mints and gum.

These stains are most likely composed of "dead plaque" bacteria - many of them have come from old plaque and "dropped' around your teeth.

Once you have your oral health totally under control - this will stop - but it may take 6 -12 months for this to happen.

Read to the end of this piece on my website - and it will explain:

http://www.zelliescleanwhiteteeth.com/Zellie-Mouth-Care-System.aspx

This shows the xylitol time line and why it takes 6-12 months to get rid of an old infection in your mouth.

http://www.zelliescleanwhiteteeth.com/Resources-Oral-Health-Timeline.aspx

Closys is actually good at removing daily stains in the future - don't worry about tooth color at this moment - it is too soon.

Keep on the program and your tooth color will improve slowly and you will see great results - but your gum health is the primary concern.

In my opinion your list of importance should be:

1. Gum health ( without this you will loose your teeth)

2. Sustaining a clean mouth - making changes that stop the staining - shows you have "arrived"!!

3. Make sure the color of your teeth pleases you ( this will happen naturally as your teeth are getting harder and stronger)

4. Concern about straightening or invisilign etc - This should be very last on the list - and in my opinion will make all of the above harder to achieve - so it should only be considered when have achieved ultimate oral health.

Any chance of a picture of the enamel on your front teeth?- even a poor quality one would be helpful - in order to comment.

Maybe this is something we could discuss in a consult - since it is a lengthy discussion with pros and cons!

Hope this is helpful to you,

Great to hear of your success!

Best Wishes,

Question...what are your thoughts on the Spry oral rinse? I bought one just to try it out. The ph of the solution is acidic but after using it the ph of the mouth is very basic. But listerine does the same for me as well.

R

Hi R,

I was offered the opportunity to private label xylitol rinse and toothpaste.

I declined to do this.

The most recent research shows that xylitol rinses and toothpaste do not offer the preventive effects of the mints, gum and granular. I am not surprised.

I think the rinse is not a good product - and I think the toothpaste is too abrasive.

I continue to suggest one specific oral care routine - which works like a charm for everyone who uses it!

Thanks so much for your interest and comments.

Best wishes,

Just found your site. Am 75 yr young woman, without money for dental care...no insurance...just had lots of new cavities at exposed roots due to receding gums...need lots of new work...have always taken good care of my teeth. My question is, is your program specifically for older mouths like mine, or is there more that can be done by people like me. Thanks for what seems to be good work!

-K

Hi K,

This is a great program for anyone of any age. With years, we become more prone to dry mouth - and women often have acidic saliva (made worse by mineral deficiencies or stress).

Xylitol will help a lot - but it would be fantastic if you can get to using my complete mouth care system. My Mom is 90 and puts a teaspoon of xylitol into water to sip during the morning every day - to keep her teeth sparkling and clean!

Here is a link to the complete mouth care system:

Please let me know if you have any other questions or comments,

Best Wishes,
