Breaking news?

I don't normally "do" breaking news, but this one seems a combination of important, interesting, inevitable, and even a little funny. It looks like Microsoft has quietly extended the ESU (Extended Security Updates) program for Windows 10 for another year. The support pages quietly changed its end-of date from 2026, later this year, to 2027.

I'll have more to say on this in coming weeks, but for now ... it looks like Windows 10 users got another year's reprieve!

I'm not a sports guy, but I've been paying a little attention to the FIFA World Cup this week, for two reasons.

The first is the impact on Seattle area traffic and related things. I work at home, but that doesn't mean I don't hit the roads from time to time. Not just that, but I visit a local brewpub on a semi-regular basis, and that happened to coincide with one of the games (U.S. versus Australia) being played here. There was barely room to move on what would otherwise have been a very quiet Friday morning!

Second is the Dutch. I'm getting a kick out of the various videos of Dutch fans all decked out in orange, singing and dancing "Links Rechts" ("Left Right") in support of their team. If I have to pick a team to root for, that'll be the one.

Bitlocker broken? Not really, but kinda.

Just wanted to mention that, yes, I've heard the news about the Bitlocker "Yellow Key" exploit. I'll be writing more about it the coming weeks. As with so many things the headlines seem to overstate the practical reality. Yes, it's bad (and embarrassing), but from what I understand for most folks it's nothing to worry about yet. For now the TL;DR: is don't lose your Bitlocker-encrypted laptop.

As I mentioned in this week's 7 Takeaways, I sometimes wonder who used the apocryphal Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times" on us. Times have been too interesting for too long. A stretch of boring might be very welcome, but when it comes to technology it seems highly unlikely.
