Wondering if there's a descriptive name for this geometric surface

I've been making copies of ancient Egyptian furniture. Many stools have what's called a "double cove" seat shape but I've examined several artisan stools that depart from this in a subtle way. Description and diagram link below the fold...

Basically, if you take an arc and move it along another arc, it'll cut a surface called a double cove. It's much like the shape left by a scoop moving through ice cream.

In the artisan stools, the edges of seat follow the exact same arcing path but the centre of the seat has a tighter, deeper radius. It's as if the scoop contracts in radius as it moves through the ice cream (except that it's happening simultaneously across two axes).

I'm wondering if there's a way to describe this double cove shape, where radius of the arc starts large at the edges but shrinks towards the middle

Is there a way to make a phone case more grippy?

I have long struggled to find an iPhone case that is not too slippery for my liking. Because I can't keep buying new cases in the hope that they'll be more grippy, is there something that I can do to an existing case that'll make it grippier? Like, something I can spray, stick, or wax on, which doesn't also make it attract dirt?

The ideal would be for my phone (iPhone SE 2022) to not slide off my open palm held at a 45º angle.

In the distant past, I had an iPhone case made of a kind of neoprene rubber, which had excellent grip. I also had one made of leather, which was also very grippy. I've been unable to find ones like those again.

You can recommend new cases if you like, but what I am really asking for here is something that I can do to my existing case. I currently have both a silicon case, and a leather case, but both are too slippery.

What do hiring managers think of this form of recruiting?

During a current job search I've been approached by multiple third-party recruiters that apparently don't contract with companies to find candidates for their current hiring needs. These recruiters will instead find a person such as myself who are open to new opportunities; find open positions from across the appropriate industry that might be a fit for them; and approach the companies hiring for those positions to see if they are interested in the person as a candidate. I'm in architecture, but I assume this model is common in any number of industries. Actual question(s) below...

Is there any advantage to job seekers with this arrangement, aside from the recruiters finding positions that a job seeker might not? Are there downsides? I wonder if this approach actually puts the job seeker at a disadvantage compared to job seekers applying to their positions directly?

I don't know how specifically such recruiters approach companies with potential candidates. If it's essentially with "unsolicited resumes", I understand that companies generally do not appreciate that - and rightly so, I think. But are there other approaches they use which are beneficial to both hiring managers and job seekers?

Which Phone Next?

Please recommend the iPhone that will replace my trusty 6s.

Yes, that's right, I've been soldiering along with a nice little iPhone 6s, because it does what I want from a phone...phone, text, camera, and a tiny bit of web surfing. And Apple Pay. But, I'm increasingly running into performance issues and I feel like it's time to finally retire my little workhorse. I will definitely go the refurb route.

My needs are few. As I said, phone, text, camera, etc. I am not someone who lives their life out of their phone. Size is a big deal. The 6s felt great in my hand. Small, thin, metal (I definitely prefer metal) It fit securely in any pocket. I'm not at all a fan of phablets. I realize, though, that I may not have a choice.

Not a fan of Face ID. My M3 iPad Air still has a print reader, and I'd prefer my next phone have one, too.

Obviously, I'd like my next phone to be as future-proof as practical, as far as OS updates go. My 6s (which got a security update last month!) topped-out at iOS 15.8.8, so obviously I'm not too concerned about living on the bleeding edge.

So, if you can think of a recent-ish model of iPhone that covers as many bases as possible, please suggest it.

Novel organization software for people with cognitive issues

Instead of taking three days to write this, am going minimalist. So

1. I have had a novel idea in my head for a few years
2. I have a chronic progressive neurological condition that affects (among a long list of things) executive function and short term memory function.
3. Now that I am on disability I have lots of time to dedicate to this project. Just to make it all meta-, It is about the experience as an educational psychologist experiencing the progress in real time from the inside.

OK, maybe not a big audience, but having read and met the author Andrew Lelend of "The Country of the Blind" I discovered a North Star for my project. Challenges:

4. I am trying to manage~ 10 characters with a 35 year arc.
5. Lots of different places and events to track
6. Still wondering if the disease takes the form of a character.
7, In the current conditions there is a magical realism aspect of being out of place in the world while imaginary or uncanny experiences are increasingly part of the experience.
8. I meet people and within 72 hours have difficulty remembering what we talked about, in that same I could meet with them again and not remember what we talked about or their name.
9. I have tried different strategies but none work. Really.

10. So the problems I am having are character and plot continuity, repeated locations that need details carried over, and timelining.
11. Text is not something I can easily remember. Professionally I always used bright diagrams to organize my talks. Love Sanky diagrams, and did a lot of design work with post-its.

12. I tried scrivener, but the tools for setting up the framework inside that app wasn't a good fit for how I wanted see the structure,
13. I have loooked at plottr and twine, but neither felt like a friction free experience

So I am wondering about MeFi users' experiences with tools for planning novels, or maybe screenplays. I like to be able to see the big picture of the story's internal structure.
A. Discover condition in grad school, studying cognition and learning for MS degree in educational Psychology.
B I used to write a lot for research, English majors can do anything!

C. Sorry that this post is self-indulgent. It took two hours on my iPad to get it out,
D. My large clear wall is not in the same room as my writing station,

Thanks for any experiences that you can share. It means a lot that you read this far.

Should I see if someone can stay with me after top surgery?

I'm going to be having a bilateral mastectomy sometime in the next ten days to two weeks. I'm single and live alone, but I have people who can visit. One friend offered to stay for a few days. Is that something you needed?

I've been a primary care person for more than one trans man following top surgery, but in both cases it was a friend or partner I lived with anyway. I can certainly arrange to have people visit daily, but will I want someone 24 hours for a couple of days?
Doctor's Office wants my disabled friend to fax papers

I know that fax is considered secure and emails are not, but I also feel that using a free fax service on the internet is no more secure than email. How can papers be sent between a patient with no fax options and doctor's office?

My friend (who was already disabled but still working) injured herself at home a few months ago. She is trying to get papers filled out for medical leave with the state of Minnesota and the doctor's office is saying she has to fax them to them since they contain private medical information. She doesn't have a fax machine. She doesn't have a computer. She cannot leave the house alone.

Last time, she had to take the disability transit service out to the office one day and then take it there again another day to pick up the papers. I've asked why this stuff can't be mailed. She just says they are not helpful. She and I both tried faxing with the faxing services on the internet and the faxes never went through. They refuse to believe her.

Of course they will not talk to me and I have to hear everything through her and she is confused and angry. So, what are some solutions to getting papers faxed to a medical office that has a poor record of receiving them?

British Museum on Looted Cambodian Statues

I read this piece yesterday about a British guy who stole a huge fucking amount of Cambodia's Cultural history, notably just about any statue from the Khmer Empire encountered in the west is probably looted.

One of the places he donated goods to is the British Museum. Which cannot, by law, return anything it has. Has the museum ever put out anything about this?

The Met returned the statues it has a few years ago and Latchford's daughter returned everything that his estate still had. But the British Museum has famously defended the keeping of the Parthenon Marbles (stolen by Lord Elgin) and the Benin Bronzes (stolen by British Troops after the destruction of the capital city of the Kingdom of Benin in order to secure better trade rights - yes there was a trade delegation sent that was killed, but either the people sending the delegation had the intelligence of Charles II of Spain or they knew things would end badly)

Anyway, these were stolen during the 60s and 70s initially, first during the Vietnam War and the bombing of Cambodia and then during the Cambodian Civil War and the Khmer Rouge rule. But as far as I can tell, the British Museum Act (wiki link) (text of the act, look at section (5)) would not allow them to be returned, especially given the 2005 ruling that said that they did not have to give back Nazi looted paintings.

So I think it's safe to assume that they didn't give them back (or perhaps loan them on a 999 year basis, which might be legal). What I am more interested in is whether they actually said anything, especially given that the V&A and the Met both gave back their stolen statues (in 2022 or so, but they were returned). Or did they just ignore the requestand assume that the Anglophone media would praise the return from the Met and from Latchford's daughter and skip past the fact that they were not trying to return the stolen statues?

"and everyone breaking in will immediately know you are not that sane"

How would you hang this piece of art? Front, back.

It's time for Mixed Media Face Lady to take her rightful place on my wall and I don't know the best way to get her up there. As you can see, she's been assembled on top of a piece of scrap cardboard. There's a bend that needs to be stabilized, off-true edges that I would like to enjoy in their crusty glory, and depth and texture that I don't want to have flattened. A frame doesn't feel "right," propping against a ledge would fail the bend, and one of those magnetic bar frame things would squish her. To her credit, she's very lightweight so the solution doesn't need to be particularly robust, it just needs to work. (18"x21" ish ish ish)

Thoughts? Creative solutions?
