The Incredimail application incorporates a useful “bounce” button that is designed to send unwanted emails, such as junk mail straight back to where they came from. Can I do this from Outlook or Outlook Express?

Neither Outlook nor Outlook Express offer a “bounce” option for received email but you have to question the value of this feature anyway. Spam gets sent in batches measured by the million and we suspect that spammers are hardly going to spend their time weeding out the odd email that gets bounced back. Regardless of whether the mail is about pharmaceuticals or financial protection, the chances are that the mailshot would have been blasted out without caring if it gets to its destination or not.

If spam is worrying you, you may want to switch to Thunderbird, there are a whole host of spam-handling add-ons you can get to play with.

I regularly send emails to multiple recipients with Windows Live Mail and it’s tiresome to have to manually select their email addresses from the contacts database each time. Is there any way I can add their details to a group, which can be used to contact them each time?

This can be easily done in Windows Live Mail, although the software calls groups ‘categories’. Click on Contacts in the bottom left of the main Live Mail window to bring up the Windows Live Contacts. It can also download your contacts list from Windows Live Messenger or Hotmail.

Click the arrow next to New, then from the dropdown menu, click Category. In the window that appears, give the category a name and choose which people in your contacts list you would like to add to it. People can belong to more than one category. Their names will appear at the bottom. Click on Save when you’re happy with the selection.

Now close the contacts list and return to the main Windows Live Mail screen. Click New to begin writing a new email. Either type the category name in the box labelled ‘To:’ or click the ‘To:’ icon and select the category from your contacts list.

Email addresses can be added and removed from the category as needed. Open the contacts list in the same way as before, right-click on the category and click edit category.

Be careful though, as any changes you make in Live Mail will be carried over into Messenger and Hotmail, including deleting a contact and creating a group. If you create a group in Windows Live Mail, it will also appear in Messenger. You probably won’t be able to get an insurance quote to protect you from that sort of thing

I’ve been watching a bunch of videos on YouTube which are mashed up versions of other videos with a cheeky beat, a troop of kittens and some crazy stuff. I’d love to make my own, but I have no idea where to start. What do you suggest?

First of all, you need to watch as much material as you can to learn what techniques work and what doesn’t. Some of them can be really catchy and start off their own meme on the Internet, resulting in thousands if not millions of views. There are a number of techniques you can use to produce the videos, but here’s a package that can really help.

Anime Studio Debut 6 is a software package that lets you design and build your own animation shorts, cut out animations and 2D movies. It’s currently on sale from Buy.com for around $15, pretty cheap I thought, which means you can give it a try and see how you get along. The package has some great features, like Integrated Lip-Syncing, direct upload to YouTube, Motion Tracking and loads more.

At the end of the day, you’re going to need some imagination and the right tools to make this work for you, but you need to get stuck in and playing with the technology. Check it out!

I’m the proud owner of an iPhone 4, but as I spend a long time outdoors I used to always carry a spare battery with me. The iPhone’s battery is not replaceable, so I can’t do this. Is there an other option I could use instead of a spare battery??

The good news is that the battery life on the iPhone 4 is reputed to be nothing short of awesome. Obviously, I don’t know how this relates to your personal circumstances and usage patterns; but it’s worth finding out first if you really need to supplement your normal battery time.

If you do find you do, as you say, the battery isn’t replaceable, but here’s an option for you. The iPhone 4 Power Station is a backup battery with power indicator that lets you supplement the built in battery with an external power source. It’s a rechargable battery that can be charged up with your standard iPhone cable; and when your phone battery is low, you can plug in the external battery and give your phone a boost. It’s currently on sale from Buy.com for under $10 and can get you out of a fix if you need it.

The unit can also be used with an iPod as they have similar connectors. In fact, you can charge it up and carry it around and use it to boost any device that’s running low. The indicators will show you how much power is left. All in all, a great little device.

I have Word 2003 on my computer and have an annoyance I was hoping you can help me with. Everytime I start entering a date, Word automatically completes it for me. Is there any way I can stop this?

I guess this is a good example of a computer trying too hard. And putting a voice changer on, pretending to be Darth Vader and telling it to stop just isn’t going to help (I hope you haven’t tried that). The easiest way to turn this automatic updating off is to disable AutoComplete in Word. Click on the Tools menu and then AutoCorrect Options. Click on the AutoText tab and then on the box labelled “Show AutoComplete suggestions” so that the tick disappears. Click on OK to save the changes.

There you go .. no more annoying AutoCompletes.

I’ve had a quick look around and I can see why you’re confused. There’s a pretty vast selection of different speakers, all which could work for you. You probably don’t need some of the high end features you can find, like Dolby Surround, if this is just a set of speakers for your computer, but I would recommend getting a set with a dedicated sub-woofer as this can really bring out your bass.

I quite like the Altec Lansing 2.1 Speaker System which is currently on sale from Buy.com for around $60 (including shipping). It looks quite nifty, has a separate sub woofer for the best bass you can get, and 2 adjustable speakers that you can move around your desk and point in your general direction. The subwoofer can be placed on your desk or even underneath it; it will provide a good bass for your music or sounds anywhere it goes.

Looks like a great set of speakers. Check out the website and if it fits the bill go ahead and buy it. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I bought an HTC HD2 smartphone a couple of weeks ago. When it connects to my home Wifi it says that the current weather is “Snow” even though there’s no snow outside. How can I make it report the correct weather.

I had a similar problem when I got my Android phone, so I would doubt this is a problem with your phone. There are a number of ways in which your phone figures out where it is, and if it doesn’t have a GPS location, it will try and figure out where you are based on cell phone towers (called Assisted GPS) or the location your IP address may be registered under. The problem with the last two options is that they are at best, not very accurate; they can also be wildly wrong.

The best way to resolve the issue is to tell your phone what weather you want to show. Tap on the clock on the Home tab and scroll through the list for your nearest city. Tap on the Add City option and enter city name if your city is now shown. Click on the circle to the left of the city to select it. The weather should not update automatically. If not, tap on the text of your current location and then on the Weather tab. Tap Update Now to force the phone to look for the current weather.

That wasn’t terribly hard, was it. Let’s hope someone doesn’t ask me how to treat acne in my next question.

I have installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my MSI Megabook S270 laptop, which has a widescreen monitor. All is working fine apart from the System section of the main menu. Some of the icons are hidden at the bottom of the screen. I can just see the tops of them, but the scroll bar won’t let me move any further down. How can I access them?

This is a known problem with Ubuntu Netbook Remix and widescreen laptops. There used to be an official bug report for this and it should have been fixed by now. If you have the broken version and need access to the icons the workaround involves changing the resolution of the screen to an ordinary size rather than widescreen. Click on the Ubuntu logo in the top left-hand corner and then on System. Click on the Display icon in the main part of the screen. Click on the down arrow in the Resolution menu and select a different resolution with (4:3) at the end. Click on Apply and then Close.

Access the icons in the System menu and then return to the option to return the resolution to normal. Ubuntu Netbook Remix should automatically check for updates, so if you’re connected to the Internet it should automatically download the fix to sort out this problem. Quite funny actually, when you’re searching the Internet for a testosterone booster and your computer tells you “Ohhh, I have an update”. Just keep in mind that it always makes sense to keep your computer up to date with the latest updates.

I have a folder for all the documents I’m currently working in a specific folder on my computer. I would like to include this folder in the list of shortcuts that appears in the Open File dialogue window. How can I do this on my Windows 7 PC?

There are different ways to do this depending on which operating system you’re using, so it’s a good thing you included that fact that you’re using Windows 7. Windows 7 has a Favourites folder that appears in your Open File dialog and it’s quite easy to add a new folder to it.

Here’s what you need to do:

Open one of the applications you were using (example Word)

Navigate to the folder you wanted added to your Favourites

Right-click on the Favourites icon in the left-hand column

Click on “Add current location to Favourites”

Once it’s in the Favourites folder, you can move shortcuts around to change the order. So next time you’re looking for that document you wrote about the causes of adult acne you know you can find it without any trouble

I’d like to make a ring tone for my iPhone. Do I need to buy expensive software? Can it be done for free?

There’s quite a market out there for ring tones and if you want you can even make your own. All you need is iTunes, a computer (PC or Mac) and a song that’s not protected by DRM. If you didn’t buy it off iTunes, you should be able to make a ring tone out of it. Here’s what you do:

Open iTunes.

Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.

Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.

Write down the start and stop times of the clip.

Right-click the song and select “Get Info.”

Click the “Options” tab.

Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to “Start Time” in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 1:23) format.

Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to “Stop Time.” Make sure the ringtone is no more than 40 seconds long.

Click “OK.”

Right-click your song again and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.

Right-click the ringtone and select “Delete.”

Click on the “Keep Files” button.

Find the file. It’s usually in your User folder under “Music > iTunes > iTunes Music” and under the band’s name. It will have an extension of m4a.

Replace the m4a extension of your ringtone with m4r. You can either double-click slowly to rename your file, or right-click and select “Get Info” on a Mac or “Rename” on a Windows PC.

Click “Use .m4r” or the PC equivalent when the system warns you that the change may affect the use of your file.

Double-click the ringtone file. ITunes will automatically add it to your ringtones folder in your iTunes Music Library.

Connect your iPhone and sync your ringtones.

Try it a couple of times just to make sure you’ve figured out how to do it. You can use this technique to create ringtones from whatever clip you like, whether it’s your favourite song, an advert for prenate dha or your kids crying. The world is your oyster, so head off and start creating!
