I recently got myself a new Nexus One which runs Android. It came with a tiny little data card that slots inside the phone, but I can’t figure out how to read this with my computer. I have a card reader that has a variety of slots, but nothing as small as this card. Any ideas?

The type of card you’re talking about is called a microSD card and is a popular choice amongst phone manufacturers. It’s a tiny card and you can get microSD cards storing up to 32Gb of data. As you say, the card is really tiny, measuring 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm and is a quarter of the size of a standard SD card. You will find that your card reader will take standard SD cards as this is a pretty common format to use, but you’ll need an adapter to read microSD.

Adapters are usually pretty easy to come buy, because most retailers tend to sell them together with any microSD card you buy. For example, The Kingston 2Gb microSD card shown alongside, which is on sale from Buy.com at $6.99 (including shipping), comes complete with an adpater that can be used to read other microSD cards. One solution would be to buy a cheap one of these and use the reader for both cards.

I’ve been saving up for months now and have just managed to buy an iPhone. I really want to take care of this lovely gadget and I’m afraid of scratching the screen as I use it. Is there any way I can protect it from scratches??

To tell you the truth, the screens on these devices tend to be really strong and shouldn’t get scratched; but if you want to make doubly sure there are a couple of things you can do.

One thing you can do is to get some screen protectors. For example, the iPhone 3G/3Gs Premium Screen Protectors are an ultra-thing self-adhesive sticker that attach themselves to the front of your screen. They protect your screen from any violent scratching that might damage the screen and just act as another barrier against possible damage. They’re currently on sale from Buy.com and cost only $4.50 for a 6-pack of protectors.

The other advice I can give you is not to leave it in your pocket together with your keys. Too many people like putting their phone in their back pocket, then sitting on it; or leaving it together with keys or other things that can scratch your device. A little bit of prevention can go a long way.

I travel a lot and wherever I go I seem to be rolling up my mouse cable and unravelling it at the other end. It’s getting really annoying, is there a good mouse you recommend that’s good for travelling?

I remember the days of messing around with cables and trying to untangle mouse, webcam, power supply and whatever I had in my bag at the time. Things have got better since I’ve learnt to use my trackpad, but I do know that a number of people will always prefer a real mouse to sliding their finger around the keyboard.

So, what do I suggest in your case. Well, have a look at the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000. Here are the reasons I recommend it. First of all, it’s an optical mouse; there are no moving parts so it’s less likely to breakdown and will work on most surfaces. It’s also wireless; which means that there are no wires for you to tangle up and have to untangle. And it has the nice touch that the wireless received fits right into the base of the mouse; which reduce the chance of your losing it. It’s currently on sale from Buy.com for around $17 which is quite a bargain. Go check it out.

I’ve been reading a lot about people who have been phished by clicking a dodgy link on a website or an email that someone sent them. What’s the best way to avoid getting abused in this way?

There are a number of threats online and being phished is just one of them. Phishing is defined as:

…the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public.

It’s hard to avoid this risk without any protection, but most anti-virus packages nowadays include the ability to protect you from knock phishing attempts. Take McAfee Total Protection 2010 for example. It includes a set of components to protect you from viruses, spyware, spam and phishing attempts. It usually makes sense to try and get a single package that can protect you from everything; that way you can put your faith into one package. It’s currently on sale from Buy.com for around $20 for a 3-user license, which isn’t very expensive for some peace of mind, isn’t it?.

My mum keeps complaining that my XBox is too loud, but if I put the volume down, it really doesn’t feel as atmospheric. What do you suggest?

I got this question from a 12 year old cousin of mine, and like a lot of questions I get asked by twelve-year olds, the answer was pretty basic. Turning down the volume wasn’t an option, but I did suggest closing the door. This wouldn’t have worked for him, as his Xbox was in the living room, where every one spent the evening. So, I pulled our the backup plan: headphones.

Actually, I took it one step further than that. If you’re going to go down the headphone route, might as well go for a headset that has a microphone you could use in your games too. So I suggested something like the Plantronics GameCon X20, a headset designed specifically for gaming on the XBox. In fact, there’s not much to say about it except that it’s on sale from Buy.com for $10, which is pretty reasonable when you think about it.

A headset is great actually when playing a collaborative game, as it means you can communicate with other people on XBox Live without having to let go of your controller. Those few seconds can make all the difference between being at the top of the pile or right at the bottom.

I need to send my CV to a job agency but I can’t seem to open it. I last edited in on a friend’s computer with Office 2007 and am now on my own machine (which has Word 97 on it). How can I open the docx file?

I got this question from a young friend of mine who was trying to send a CV for a job he found on a Miami Job Search site. Well, unfortunately there’s nothing that Microsoft supply that lets you open docx files on Word 97. You must remember that this is 13 years old now and has been out of support for some time. You might want to consider moving to a more recent version of the software.

Is that’s not an option there is a work around. You could download a copy of Open Office, a free Office Applications suite that lets you open and save documents in a variety of formats. It should handle docx files quite easily and it should also let you save the document in Word 97 format. You will have to keep in mind however that you may lose some of your formatting along the way, as the more recent versions of Word let you do things that the old version doesn’t.

One suggestion I have is that you might want to stick with Open Office. It’s a better product (in my humble opinion) than Word 97, at least, it’s much more recent and has better support.

You’re in luck here a Nvidia is one of the major card producers and have their own website where you can download drivers for all their products. Even better than that, their website even has a facility that will scan your computer and figure out what card you’re using and then point you in the direction of the driver you need.

Here’s what you do, head to the Nvidia Driver Download page, where you will see a page like this:

Click on Graphics Drivers (circled above) and let the site install the required software and scan your system. It should then point you at the driver you need to make it all happen. Simple huh? I wish it was that easy to get replacement bulbs for my lighting fixtures, I always seem to get the wrong type whenever a bulb blows!

My wife and I use Yahoo Mail on our computers but often have problems with the site reporting Error Code 5. Is this common and how do we get about fixing it?

I’ve have a poke around Yahoo Help and Yahoo Answers and it looks that the reason behind Error Code 5 is that you’re trying to use the same account from more than one place. There are a number of reasons why this might be happening:

You could have more than one tab on your browser pointing at Yahoo Mail

You could be using a desktop client (like Outlook) while trying to use your web mail

You and your wife could be sharing the same email account and trying to access it at the same time

I’m not sure what you’re doing, but Yahoo Mail is designed to be used by one user at a time. System security sometimes locks down things tighter than an mmf drawer, but it’s usually just a matter of understanding what’s going on so that you can get around the problem.

Let me know if you’re doing any of those things above.

I’ve been using my laptop bag for a couple of years now, and since I got my laptop I’ve been adding more and more kit. I now carry a couple of PCMCIA cards, a webcam, a headset, a portable hard disk and a few other pieces. My laptop bag is busting at the seams, can you recommend a more spacious one?

There are a variety of laptop bag on the market, all you have to do is walk into a computer outlet or fire up your browser and have a look around and you can find tens of different ones. You can get them in all shapes and sizes, but I did come across one on sale from Buy.com that looks like it could take all your bits and pieces and then some.

It’s the Kensington 15″ SaddleBag Pro Notebook Carrying Case and currently retails for under $30. It has one great feature which I think you’ll like, check out the photo below:

Yup, it has a drawer that sites at the bottom of the case letting you store all your cables, peripherals and other bits and pieces in case you ever need them. The comments on the site look pretty positive, most people saying it’s light and rugged, so I think you might like this one.

Check it ou

<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/USB_hub.jpg" alt="Small USB hub.
There are a couple of things to check, including making sure you have the most recent drivers for your computer and devices. However there is one thing you could check first. USB ports typically provide 500mA per port, which is fine for most devices. Hard disk however have a pretty high drain, in fact, some even come with a cable that plugs into 2 separate USB ports, just to make sure they have enough power.

If your USB hub doesn’t have a separate power supply, then my guess would be that you are exceeding the power that is being provided by the port; which essentially causes the port to fail. The best way to address this is to use a USB hub that has its own power supply and see if your problems go away.

The other thing to check out is that the USB hub isn’t over heating. I had a friend who would sit her hub on a tub of anti wrinkle cream, just to make sure it got as much air ciculation around it as possible.
