US Constitution and Maps

I’ll never forget the things I learned when I was a Boy Scout. One of the skill sets I was most interested in happened to be mapping, maps and anything that had to do with finding your way. Without a map, it’s easy to get lost. I’ve discovered that up in New Hampshire on my own land! I have a fancy GPS unit now, but even those are reliant on batteries and satellites. Sometimes there’s no substitute for a traditional magnetic compass and a reliable printed topographic map. Once lost, it can be hard to get back home to safety....

Riddle View Lane Summer Sleepovers

I grew up on Riddle View Lane in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1960’s. My guess is that it wasn’t much different than any other street in the city. All the houses in my neighborhood were shaped just like the little green houses in a Monopoly game. My mom and dad’s house was so small, measuring just 22 by 22 feet, it could fit inside the garage at my last home....

Aunt Margaret

“Let’s go visit Aunt Margaret,” my Dad said. If I’d had a mirror in front of me, there’s no doubt my eyes and grin were wider than an airplane-hanger door. Margaret was my Dad’s older sister, and she lived with my Uncle Louie in a majestic old home in North Avondale, an original suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Aunt Margaret was a fun aunt. Trips to her house were guaranteed good times....

Newspaper Obituaries

My home is under a primary flight path of a critical-care helicopter used to transport accident victims and patients who are banging on death’s door. The sound made by the rotors and turbine engine are very distinctive, and each time I hear it zooming overhead, I say to my kids, “Someone is dying.” It is a grim reminder of the reality of the moment....

Online Video Advertising

If you paid attention during your high school or college Economics class, you undoubtedly were exposed to the axiom of supply and demand. Video advertising must abide by this law just as a falling rock obeys the law of gravity. We are about to witness a classic lab experiment of the economic law of supply and demand, and it will give any economics professor who is monitoring the online video advertising world enough lecture material to last a semester, maybe two....

Imagine you were a gardener with a giant greenhouse full of plants. One day you decide to take 400 of your favorite flowers and vegetables from the greenhouse and move them to a new, temporary location where you could saturate them with a special fertilizer, lots of other delicious foods and abundant sunshine, well let’s say a mix of sun and clouds. If those of us in attendance here at Zeitgeist ‘05 - The Google Partner Forum were indeed plants, that is exactly what happened to us over the past 36 hours....

Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Club

Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Club is aptly named. You can easily get snake-bitten by the natural beauty that surrounds this wonderful golf mecca. In reality, this private golf club is most surely named for the quiet meandering creek whose shape looks exactly like a rattlesnake that is on the move. A very good freind of mine, Jim Toms, invited me to play as his guest. We had a fantastic time on the course yesterday morning and early afternoon....
