As many of you know I am on a quest… a quest to lose weight and be healthier. This is not a New Years resolution but something I have been working on for 6 months now. I feel like this time is different. I am working hard at making real life changes. The first thing that I am doing differently is journaling. Weight Watchers suggests that you do it, nutritionists suggest that you do it, even many counselors are having people journal for weight loss. I am now a huge fan. Journal writing is working for me for many reasons.

Getting it Out: Let’s face it, none of us who are over weight are fat because we want to be. Many times it is not even because of anything more than dealing with our demons. We all have them. We all have reasons for emotional eating. It is not usually that we are so hungry we just cannot stop. It is often that we are eating to feel better. We then overeat and from that point we are filled with worse emotional baggage than we started with. I have found that stopping myself in my tracks and writing in my journal has helped a lot. I can look back and see what my triggers are and I can get whatever is “eating” me, out of my head.

Planning: Writing in a journal has offered me the opportunity to really plan. I do not mean that I am planning meal by meal. It is so much more than that. I have been able to plan social eating. I have been able to review in my head and on paper different techniques for avoiding picking, overeating and even plan for meals. In my journal two days before Thanksgiving I did something I still find to be quite silly. I drew a picture of a plate and put how much space each item at dinner should occupy on my plate. I know that it seems quite silly but it worked and I continued to lose weight over Thanksgiving. I also found that my weight loss slowed over Christmas week. My journal was also not touched that week. Since there was no plan, I was not able to be successful.

Track Weight Loss: In the front of my journal I have dates and weights. It is a quick way to track how I am doing. I am also able to go back and reference how I was feeling emotionally during peeks and valleys. I even track my period in relation to weight loss. This enables me to look at the whole picture and not get stressed. In tracking my weight I have determined that I gain up to 7 pounds the week before my cycle begins. This has enabled me to remain calm even though the scale is moving in the wrong direction.

All in all I believe in the power of the journal. I have filled three one subject notebooks front to back over the past 6 months. I have found this to be a positive way to assure that I stick to eating healthy and that I am emotionally happier. If you do not journal I would very much suggest that you try it as part of your weight loss journey as well!

Along with so many others I struggle with my weight. For the past 6 months I have been working very hard to shed all of this extra weight that I have put on. I have lost a total of 66 pound since I had my son in July. I have found that calorie counting is an effective, simple way to go. A few days before Christmas I received the best package of all from MomSelect and Weight Watchers. In a box, in a cooler, packed on dry ice was the most wonderful thing of all! It was a cooler full of Weight Watchers Ice Cream Treats!

I know that many of you have to be wondering how they were not only taste wise but also calorie wise. These great treats varied in calories. They were the perfect way to end the day. It is how I reward myself when I am trying to lose weight. If I have a good day and stay under my target calories I will treat myself to a treat. To be honest I have been buying these Weight Watchers treats for the past 6 months while I have been trying to lose weight. I was super excited to see new flavors in my box of treats. I know that you are dying to know what I tried and what I thought so here it is.

The first ones that I tried were the Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Bars. I know that it is a mouthful to say but the name is well worth the taste. It had sweet, chocolate and was big enough to last through the pleasure. The only thing that I noticed is that it is a little too artificial tasting for me. I am not saying that I did not eat them. I am also not saying that I would not buy them to eat again. The dark chocolate was just enough to give you that chocolate fix while you are watching your calorie intake. These Dark Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Bars only have 110 calories and are so worth it!

The next ice cream bars I indulged in were the Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Dulce de Leche Ice cream Bars. These were by far my favorite of the bunch. They have a creamy caramel taste and are again covered in my favorite thing… Chocolate! The biggest trouble with these is that the kids also LOVED them! This meant that it was not long before they were gone. I have been back to the store to get more of the Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Dulce de Leche Ice Cream Bars. They are only 120 calories and well worth it! I highly recommend these treats!

Weight Watchers Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Ice Cream Bars were not a disappointment either. Even though I am not fond of strawberry ice cream, these ice cream bars did not let me down in anyway. Just as the others these were a wonderful way to end the day! They have only 100 calories which make them the best bet yet calorie wise. I think that it is again important to mention that the kids LOVED these ice cream bars and that I was lucky to get one at all! If you like chocolate and you like strawberries you will love these treats.

I was so excited to see the Snack Sized Chocolate Fudge Bars in my cooler. I love the giant chocolate fudge bars but do not always feel like I have been good enough to justify 100 + calories. These Snack Sized Chocolate Fudge Bars are delicious and are only 45 calories each. This means that if you have had too many calories in a day but really need a fix you can indulge. It also means that when you CRAVE chocolate, you can have 2 and still not be over doing your calorie intake. These also hide well in the freezer due to their compact size. I was able to have some before the kids found them!

These were another delicious option for those days that you are a little short on calories. These Weight Watchers Dark Chocolate Raspberry Ice Cream Bars are only 80 calories but do not lack in flavor at all. They have some extra chocolate shell and are creamy and delicious. Not only did I have to fight the kids for these ones but I had to fight Rob as well. I only wish I had a lock for my freezer. It may be worth the investment.

Christmas is right around the corner and I find that I want to sing all day and all night. There is no better time of year for songs that are geared toward children. Christmas songs for children is what the season and singing is all about. This year my children have a few new favorites in addition to the good old ones.

Nuttin’ for Christmas: This song made its first appearance on the radio in 1955. It is amazing how these songs live on generation after generation. I am amazed that the kids keep watching a youtube video and sing along. Even with technology this song lives on with children around the world.
<iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/B_7xqqt1Vgs” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Up on the Housetop: This is one of my favorites that you do not get to hear very often these days. I am hoping that by singing it with my children again and again it will become one of their favorites as well. <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/Yep2d7H974w” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: Who does not love the story of Rudolph all wrapped up in one fun and fast song? This is one of the best and most popular Christmas songs for Children in the USA. <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/T5VdsuQ-YfM” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Must be Santa: I love this one because it is super fun and fast paced. The kids catch on quickly as well. <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/JeKaV-yhN3c” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Frosty the Snowman: What is more fun than a snowman who comes to life and leads the children on the adventure of a lifetime? <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/Z1RoN3CnxFw” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

The 12 Days of Christmas: This song is a huge challenge but we always have a great time trying to get through it all. <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/FF1xcKW2e-g” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

All I want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth: We all remember the Christmas that we lost our two front teeth. Even better is that there is a song about it all. <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/duMdZkuOGGg” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

Santa Clause is Coming to Town: What is better than a song that reminds children how to behave? I love this one and it is one of my personal favorites! <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/HWv72L4wgCc” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

These are our favorite Christmas songs for children this year. Which ones are on your children’s top Christmas songs this year? I hope that they have a blast singing… because… It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

I am thankful for my family. No matter what is going on they are always there. While I know many people cannot spend time in a room with their families and in-laws I actually am lucky enough to enjoy their company.

I am thankful for my babies. I had been told when I was 20 that it would be near impossible to have children. I remember feeling as if my life was over. All I had ever wanted was to have a big family. Having a Dr. tell you that your dreams could be shattered is never easy. I showed them though. I have 4 beautiful babies and the big family I had always wanted.

I am thankful that god gives me the strength to deal with things such as bipolar and cerebral palsy on a regular basis. I will admit that there have been days that I have been crippled by dealing with these illnesses. I have resented god for giving my babies such challenges. I have asked why me? I have asked why them? Now I accept it and we make the best of it all. I would not trade them in for anything

I am thankful for my husband who no matter what is always there by my side. Again it is not always easy but love has shined in our lives and we give each other the boosts we need.

I am thankful for my health. In church there is a teen who has spent her life struggling with diabetes. Recently it was discovered that she also has cancer. As I pray for her each evening I also thank god that I am healthy, that my babies are healthy and that my husband is healthy. There are so many things we take for granted.

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to share what you are thankful for. I know that some days it seems as if nothing goes right and that your life is terrible. I think that what is important is that you put all of that into perspective. Thanksgiving is a time to evaluate. Thanksgiving is a time to truly look inward and discover your inner thanks. What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

For many Black Friday is a kick off to the holiday season. This year retailers have chosen to change the game a bit. Many retailers will be opening on Thanksgiving Evening. Santa where are you? We need your help so that Christmas does not ruin Thanksgiving and Black Friday traditions. While I completely understand corporate America’s desire to rake in the Christmas cash I think that we all have to re-evaluate a few things.

Image via Wikipedia

Thanksgiving is a NATIONAL holiday. This is the only nation holiday that almost everyone has the opportunity to be with their family and friends. It is wrong to get rid of this holiday for monetary reasons. Christmas on the other hand is a religious holiday and no retailer would dare to be open on Christmas day.

Many people shop on Black Friday. How much more money can they rake in by opening 4 hours earlier? Is it worth the impact that will be felt to open that 4 hours early? Will they lose out on sales because they have made many shoppers annoyed? I know many people who will not be shopping on Black Friday this year.

Why are we so driven by retail? Because of the retailers big push this year, I am completely stressed and it is not even the Christmas season yet. By the time Christmas gets here I think we will all be quite tired of it. The neighbors are already decorating. any people have their trees out and the Salvation Army Bell Ringer is already out.

Will Christmas overtake Thanksgiving all together? This holiday that has been in existence for so long seems to be losing the Christmas battle. So will we all soon throw it away all together to make more room for Christmas? Also what will happen to black Friday is we continue to move the shopping earlier and earlier? Retailers will not have the ability to have one big make it or break it day!

I know that many of you think that I am nuts. For goodness sakes I have a holiday countdown every year so how hypocritical can I be. The truth is that I believe that preparing for the season in advance is important. I think that in budgeting and planning we find some peace and certainly less stress. I would never, ever start decorating my house before Thanksgiving. While Christmas is a very special time in my heart, so too is Thanksgiving. Having worked in retail for years I really believe that it is time to reexamine what is important. I know that it is economically tough times but is it worth sacrificing people’s ability to spend Thanksgiving enjoying family?

On the other hand what is wrong with all of us. I know that many of you reading this will be out there Thanksgiving night to get a hot deal. While I can respect your desire to save money and get the items you want I am asking you to stay home. Hold your babies a little longer, enjoy the pumpkin pie, talk to family members you may not have the chance to see through out the year. Let Thanksgiving be Thanksgiving and start Christmas in the morning.

The truth is that the hot item you leave your family to go out and get will be gone before you get there anyway. They only buy 10 of those hot items and the employees buy it up and hide them before the doors open. Show corporate America that they do not have the power to ruin another holiday. Let Christmas and all of its glory start Friday. What is the next holiday to be sucked up and ruined by Christmas?? Perhaps Halloween will be the new Thanksgiving.

Let me begin by saying that there are two sides to each and every story and somewhere in the middle lies the truth. As thousands protested in Oakland it seems as if they were met with extreme force. While some say that the entire Occupy Wall Street movement is a leaderless group with no clear goals, other say that there are clear demands and that no one is taking the time out to see what Occupy Wall Street is all about. I have done some research and all I can say is THANK YOU! I cannot go out and sit in the streets for months at a time, but for the people who can and are; around the nation and world, I applaud you. As I watch video after video of the raid on Occupy Oakland movement I am saddened and disheartened. We are all Americans. We live in a nation in which we have the right to assemble and the right to stand up when we feel injustice is occurring. All of us should be thankful that this brave set of individuals are bringing awareness to concerns that are decades in the making.

I have watched a lot of the videos of the Occupy Oakland Raid in the past day and a half. Part of me keeps watching them to see if I see my brother, who has not checked in yet, and part of me watches because I am just in such disbelief. These are not images of a free America. These images closely resemble nations across the world. Nations in which the people are suppressed. Nations that are not build on democracy and freedom. What have we done and how do we fix it.

I see a lot of the points Occupy Wall Street is making. I agree with many of them. As a family of 6 it is tough to make it. Having grown up in middle class, I struggle to hang on to my class status. Each day it becomes more difficult. There are so many things that our family is suffering through that many others, in this once great nation, are also suffering. It is my understanding that Occupy Wall Street and All of the Occupy movements are looking for basic things.

Take the money out of politics. Special interests and lobbyist have ruled this nation for too long. It is time for the laws to be made by the people for the people once again.

Spreading of the wealth. While some are against higher taxes for higher income brackets I am not. The trouble is that the days of philanthropy are long gone. The upper class and corporations have been ruled by greed. People with money used to spread it around. A CEO of a business would make sure that all of the employees of that business are able to survive before taking millions in bonuses. They would give holiday bonuses to all of the workers. It seems to me that in today’s society, the upper class keeps the wealth with no regard to the hardworking people who brought that wealth to them.

Health care… what a mess. This is another matter of greed and money. Even doctors are fed up with insurance companies. 11 years ago I had a baby and paid $20 for my entire pregnancy. I paid for insurance and when I needed it… they covered me. Now I pay three times as much to have insurance and they cover next to nothing. This past pregnancy cost $12,000 out of pocket. What American has that kind of money sitting around. It almost totals the amount of my entire college education.

Jobs, jobs, jobs. Where are the jobs? As a nation we make nothing. We have become a nation founded on service. Machines and “convenience” factors such as Easy Pass, self check out in the stores and online banking have stolen our jobs. As a nation we need to stand up and figure out how to fix this very real crisis.

While I do not feel as if this great nation needs to become a socialized nation, I do believe that we have to take a long, hard look at what capitalism is doing to us. This nation post 9/11 is a utter mess. We have been stripped of our privacy and rights due to fear. We have allowed corporations to run this nation. It is time for something to change and it is my belief that the protesters of Occupy Wall Street are on a positive path. Change is inevitable… let’s just pray that it is change for the better.

have struggled with my weight my entire life. Some of the struggle is emotional, some of the struggle is physical… all of it is hard. This time I am having more success losing weight than ever before. I feel like it is melting off of me. There are some things that I am doing differently this time that I feel are contributing to my weight loss success.

Goals: I know that this sounds simple and old school, but it is working. I have set a large goal for myself that I will lose 32.8 pounds by December 31st. Because I often find big goals to be overwhelming I decided to switch it up a bit. I have established several small goals along the way. One small weight loss goal was to lose 2 pounds by the time I was off to a wedding. Another small goal is to lose 1 pound by the time I went away for the weekend. I keep choosing small events in my life and set a small goal to achieve. Some small goals I have achieved and some I have not been able to. I just start fresh each couple days to couple weeks with a new small goal. Eventually my small goals should add up to my big goal. So far I am still on track to being able to achieve that goal.

Calorie Counting: While this is an old technique I am finding that it is working. I roughly count my calories each day. I aim for 1200 calories. Some days I am over and some days I am not. It is a rough estimate. I have been trying to reduce my carbs. based on my pre-diabetic status. So far the 1200 calorie goal is going well.

Substituting: In addition to counting calories I have been thinking of ways to enjoy foods without eating unhealthy choices. I have been putting Humus on my chicken wraps for lunch instead of mayonnaise. I also have been skipping salad dressing and tasting the natural flavor of veggies. I have been putting artichokes, olives, apples and many new and different flavors into my salad and am really enjoying it. In addition I have eliminated butter from my diet. I do use butter spray and olive oil from time to time but I avoid too much of any of these.

Walking: While I have not been great about exercise I am really trying to incorporate it more into my weight loss plan. I have been trying to take the kids out for a walk at least twice a week in order get moving but I know there could be more. I am sure that increasing this will be a goal in the next few weeks but for now walking 2 days a week is reasonable. The best thing is that the kids enjoy it

Weight Loss Journal: I know that Weight Watchers encourages using a journal. For years I have resisted it but the truth is that I have found it to be quite helpful. Please do not confuse journal writing with tracking calories. Every few days I sit in a quiet room, alone, and write in a journal. I try to get a hold on my emotions, anxieties, failures and successes. I have found that getting all of these things out of my head have been helpful. I am an emotional eater and needed to figure out another way to channel my emotions. I write until I have nothing else to say.

So far this is how I am finding success in this chapter of my weight loss journey. If you are interested please join me. You can visit me on facebook at Becca’s Belly Busters. I would love the company!

I just saw on Ebay of all places that Star Wars the Complete Saga is being released in just three days! I have been waiting for this release for YEARS now and I have to say that it is about time.

Growing up Star Wars movies were my all time favorites. Because I am getting old please realize that I am talking about Episodes IV, V, and VI! I am not sure if it was the cool creatures or Princess Leia but I LOVED them. Then in 1999 George Lucas did a wonderful thing and released Episode I. While Star Wars Episode I did not get the wonderful critic acclimation… I still loved it. In 2005 “The Revenge of the Sith” was released and the Star Wars Saga was complete. I have to admit that I was not in anyway disappointed with the newer movies. Yes, they were not the same actors and the technology was much more advanced but for me… it made the story complete. Either way I know that Star Wars: The Complete Saga will be making its way into my home by Christmas!

We now know how Darth Vader was drawn to the dark side. The question of why Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker were separated. There was no longer any question as to who made C3PO or how Obi One Kenobi knew so much about Luke’s father. It was like going back in time and having all of your questions answered. For this Star Wars fan the completion of the Star Wars Saga was a wonderful thing!

It will be so nice to be able to watch them all in order. Because I did not remember the order off of the top of my head I was forced to look it up! So here it is:

Episode I: The Phantom Menace. You remember the movie where we first met Anakin Skywalker meets Obi One. The one with that annoying yet lovable Jaja Binks. Although some felt that there were racial undertows there… I think that they just needed something to complain about!

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: In this movie the Jedi take over again and there are secrets revealed! Oh and who can forget the Ewoks? You know that you wanted to take one home with you!

On September 16, 2011 Star Wars the Complete Saga will be released. I know that I am asking Santa Clause for the Star Wars the Complete Saga. For the bargain price of $79.95 for all six movies on blue ray I do not see where we can go wrong with this one!

I know that it seems like it is too early to even think about Christmas, but the fact of the matter is that it is time to being AskBecca’s Christmas Countdown. The goal of this years Christmas Countdown is to actually keep up with it. For the past three years I have tried and tried to do a Christmas Countdown and the truth is that life tends to get in my way. In September and October I am able to accomplish all of the posts and topics I want to. From there it is all down hill. Time becomes a problem and then poof Christmas is here. This year I would like it all to go a little better! So on Saturday, September 17th I will begin the Christmas Countdown 2011. Here is what I have in store this year:

What is hot and what is not. I will be in search of wonderful new products for kids and the family this coming Christmas season.

Sing a song… This year I would like to include some Lyrics to my all time favorite Christmas Carols. One of my goals is to bring Christmas Caroling back this Christmas season. In order to do that we will need to know all of the words to all of the favorites.

Movie time anyone? We all know that Christmas time is the time for movies. Christmas movies are a wonderful way to share time with your family and a way to look back to your childhood. Christmas movies are not all I intend to post about. We also know that many movies are released Christmas day. Check in with me to see what movies you may want to stop into the theaters to see!

Santa Clause‘s Cookie Corner… We all know how the big guy loves his cookies. The Christmas season is not complete without cookies. I know that our family is not alone in baking dozens and dozens of cookies. I will be sharing a cookie recipe a week to add to your recipe box. If you have a favorite cookie recipe I would love to hear about it! We all know that Christmas cookies are the key to a Merry Christmas!

Homemade Christmas Craft ideas. Last year our family had a homemade Christmas. For some members of our family this caused great stress, but for others it was wonderful. There is nothing more special than creating a homemade Christmas craft! We even encouraged the kids to get involved! They loved making their cousins Christmas gifts!

As you can see there is a lot in store in this years Christmas Countdown. You will not want to miss a day.

Just a reminder… Christmas is not about shopping and buying. It is about sharing a magical time of year with our family and friends. Do not get caught up in the hype. Do not let it all stress you out. Be sure to plan and I am sure that your family will have a wonderful Christmas 2011!

Thanks to Momselect, I was given another opportunity to review a great kids product. We had a Zhu zhu baby party and it could not have gone better. Momselect and the makers of Zhu Zhu babies gave me the opportunity to review the Zhu Zhu babies not only with my children, but also with their friends. Today the stork dropped by and delivered Zhu Zhu babies to our house.

We started our Zhu Zhu adventure with a scavenger hunt. Being that we just had a baby 2 months ago there were plenty of places to hide everyones Zhu Zhu Baby. I wrapped them all up so that there was no fighting over who got which Zhu Zhu. The girls started their adventure with a clue leading them to the high chair, baby swing, cabinet in the kitchen with the baby bottles, bouncy sear, crib and more. With each clue the excitement grew and grew. The girls all raced around trying to find the Zhu Zhu baby that was for them.

Once they all had their wrapped Zhu Zhu they tore the packaging off. The girls LOVED them. Comments included, “they are so much cuter than the big Zhu Zhu pets.” and “oh they are so cute”. I let them open them and then explained to them that every baby needs a birth certificate. I printed up birth certificates to color and decorate for each girl. Some chose to change the name of their Zhu Zhu babies, while others kept the name that the baby came with.

From here it was off to snacks and a Zhu Zhu Babies Dance Recital. The people at Zhu ZHu were nice enough to send a Dance Recital Zhu Zhu Babies set for the girls to try out their Zhu Zhu pets. With the help of our new mommy Zhu Zhu the Zhu Zhu Babies were able to put their tutus on and dance up a storm. The girls played and played with them. They seemed to really enjoy them.

All in all this was a huge success! The girls had a great time playing with their new Zhu Zhu Babies and the moms loved them when they arrived. I think that they will all be going out and buying a few more Zhu Zhu Babies for their little ones! The funny part was that I let Emma have this party rather than Abigail. I felt that she had outgrown Zhu Zhu Pets. Boy was I wrong. She did not care that she would be 11 in a few weeks. She wanted to know why she did not get one! So the mom that I am I broke down and let her come to the party too! She seemed to love it more than the 7-8 year old girls. I was told that I could not tell anyone but oh well. She even took the time out today to build her Zhu Zhu Baby a little Zhu Zhu home! Thank you so much to MomSelect and Zhu Zhu for allowing us yet another wonderful opportunity!
