Do you have a story to tell? A passion to share… a skill you could teach … experiences that could help others? You can get started today and not have to spend a cent.

Blogging is an inexpensive and easy way to start writing and get started online. Some people have even turned their blogging into books and movies, like the recent movie Julia, Julia, and Tim Ferris author of the 4 day workweek.

Blogging has evolved quite far from its humble beginnings as an online journal. Today blogs are fully functioning websites which help get the news out, connect people, and build communities of like-minded people.

How often do I need to write or post something?

Once a week is good, but if that seems like too much even once a month is a great start. The important thing is to develop the habit of writing and posting online.

How long does it need to be?

The average reader stays on a blog post 96 seconds. People are used to reading snippets online now and it has been shown that the reading habits of American online have changed to more of a scanning style.

So 200-350 words a post is a good size for a blog post. You certainly can write longer and more, but breaking up a long post into parts one way to do it, and you will find different readers will find you through different titles and stories you have written.

I am not sure what I want to say or how to say it.

One of the first things I suggest you do before you start a blog, is find other blogs and websites that may cover some of the subjects you want to write about. Find online forums and read what people are saying. Research is always a good idea before you begin. Take notes while you are doing this so you can remember your ideas for later. I recommend that you keep a blog notebook with you at all times to jot down ideas as you go out and about.

There is no right or wrong. This is not English class. Do not be afraid to write. The more you write the better you will become and you will find your voice.

You can go back and edit change anything you have written. You can even delete posts you don’t like. Blogging is fun if you just relax and let it be a creative way to express yourself.

How will people find me?

Tell all your friends, start an email list, join some of the other blogs and online forums you may of found in your research and become part of their community, you can add a link to your website in your signature file in your email, and on all your social media websites and business cards. Update your Facebook when you publish a post, then go and tweet it!

How will I learn how to blog, I am not technical at all!

You can Google wordpress training videos, or blogger training videos, and you will find hundreds of wonderful videos that will show you each step. I have several videos for beginners on my website for wordpress users to help them learn how to get started posting.

Anyone can blog

My 71-year-old Dad had a stroke 5 years ago, and is now in a nursing home. After his stoke, he very was sad about the loss of his old life and mobility and independence, yet he inspired his therapists and others with his amazingly positive and never give up attitude. I told him he could help other people like him through blogging. I bought him a laptop and set up a blog for him and he is blogging in the nursing home. He recently got them to install a wireless router for visitors and the other residents.

One of my clients runs a blog called Feisty Side of 50. She is the number two blog for baby boomer women! She got started with a free wordpress blog just for fun and it took off.

Today she has her own internet radio program where she recently interviewed Prince Charles and Patricia Cornwell, all because she started a little blog for fun.

If you have something to say and you love to write, get started online and who knows what might happen!

More simply, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software, not fight it.

WordPress started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing and with fewer users than you can count on your fingers and toes. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on hundreds of thousands of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.

The GPL from the Free Software Foundation is the license that the WordPress software is under.

The WordPress platform is easily adaptable to all types of websites, from blogs to e-commerce storefronts. Here’s what you need to know about the world’s most popular Content Management System (CMS).

If you want to create a successful website, you’ll need to start with the best platform you can find. This is easier said than done — since there are so many options available for building your new site, it can be hard to know what platform to choose.

While there’s no one perfect platform, WordPress comes very close. It’s easily adaptable to all types of sites, from simple blogs to booming e-commerce storefronts. The benefits of using WordPress are numerous, and it’s surprisingly easy to get started with.

While WordPress was originally designed for blogs, it’s now suitable for all kinds of websites. In fact, it powers over 28 percent of all sites on the internet. You can use it to create business sites, online portfolios, e-commerce stores, and much more. For a clearer picture of what WordPress can do, check out some of the biggest and most popular sites made with it.

Before we move on, let’s address one common point of confusion. There is a difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com is a website that allows you to create a site using the WordPress software on their site, and is good to practice and learn with. You can create a site online for free at WordPress.com. WordPress.org supports people who use the software you can download and use to create your site, which will require your own web hosting and domain name. Installing your own copy of WordPress on your own domain name and your own hosting is a more flexible and powerful platform. You have total control over everything this way.

WordPress.com has some restrictions. As they should. They have to protect their site and their servers so they limit plugin use and other enhanced features you can use on your own hosting.

It is always better to get your own hosting account and buy your own domain name than to go with the free version on WordPress.com

But… I do tell my clients if they want to practice and learn the basics for free before they take that next step, sign up for a free blog/website on WordPress.com

You can always export your content to your new self hosted site later.

If you need help getting started, let me know.

I can help you with your domain name, website hosting and installing and setting up your WP website.

Just fill in my pre-planning form, or send me an email.

Use Creative Commons-Licensed Images

When googling for an image, add “Creative Commons” to the search.

Use images that have a Creative Commons (CC) license. However, be aware that a CC license is just that: a license. You need to read its terms and conditions and see what it allows or not.? Not all CC licenses allow the same uses. A CC license may allow use as-is, in a remix, or as part of a new work. In some cases a CC license requires attribution of the copyright owner.

Pikwizard.com “We have over 100,000 completely free images on the site, over 20,000 of those are exclusive to us. We are also adding new images to our library daily and our ultimate goal is to get to more than 1 million images.”

StockSnap.io: StockSnap has hundreds of beautiful high-resolution photos that are free from copyright restrictions. They add new photos every week and can subscribe to have them sent to your inbox.

Unsplash: Unsplash is built by a community of over 41,000 photographers who aim to inspire. This site has over 200,000 images that companies including Slack, WordPress, Squarespace, and Apple have used.

Stock.Xchng: With a robust search engine, this is one of my preferred places to “shop” for free images. Stock.Xchng is owned by iStock, so the first row of images are often paid images – but the pictures that follow are entirely free!

Pixabay: If you’re after high-quality images, Pixabay is where it’s at. Also, you don’t have to create an account to download a picture. Just click “download,” and you’re set to go.

Flickr Commons :

WARNING-BE very careful now with Flickr. I just had a client who used an image off of flickr that used to say Creative Common license and now a company that tries to track down photos and scares people with a legal looking letter asking them to pay.

To learn more about companies sending you scare emails to collect fees, read this Reddit thread.

Flickr has been bought by Yahoo/Oath and is not the free image location it used to be. They do however have a creative commons area, which is copyright free and contains quite a few very old photos, if you are doing historical or looking for old photos. They have old art work and illustrations with no known copyright and many very fascinating and unique image you can download and use safely. Check it out, it is well worth it if you want unique images or vintage images. It is all about your search words. When doing a search be sure to select creative commons in the upper left drop down. For instance here is what the search word “color” pulled up:

Purchase Stock Photos

If you decide you love certain images and want to pay for them, here are some trusted resources for those.

Fotolia: Fotolia’s subscription service can save you a lot of money if you plan on using images often.

iStock: If you have a particular image in mind, iStock’s awesome search box will help you quickly get what you need.

Cutcaster: Cutcaster gives you the opportunity to pay as you go. Also, their photos are well organized, making finding what you want a pain-free process.

Getty Images: With one of the largest image databases (over 80 million still images and illustrations), you’re guaranteed to find what you are looking for. The downside: the images are often expensive, and Getty is one of the biggest purveyors of cease and desist emails (so make sure you pay for them!). Getty has a proprietary software they run online 24/7 looking for their images that are not paid for and they do collect. Beware.

Be safe and make sure your images are not copyrighted or buy the ones you love.
When working online, you usually do not a size larger than 300-500 pixels.
That size is usually very reasonable in price.

More resources for copyright FREE images.

Another great source for large copyright free images is screensavers.

Called How old do I look, it allows people to analyze any image found on Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, or upload their own. Tell your age from a photo, and ask yourself, how old do I look?

It even allows users to search for celebrities – and see what Microsoft thinks their real ages are.<del></del>
It is fun to use, but the ages vary wildly.

People uploaded photos taken of them on the same day and got a huge variance in the age it said they were.
The developers said, ‘We wanted to create an experience that was intelligent and fun could capture the attention of people globally, so we looked at the APIs available in the Azure Machine Learning Gallery,’. The system works by analyzing 27 points on the face. Called face landmarks, they are a series of specifically detailed points on a face; typically points of face components like the pupils, canthus or nose.

‘These attributes are predicted by using statistical algorithms and may not always be 100% precise. Still it is quite fun to try out. Hint on the photos, if you are using ones from your digital camera and have not re-sized them, they will not work. They have to be smaller than a straight digital file you may of downloaded.
Most people have no idea how huge those digital files really are.

Here is a group photo of some of us from the San Francisco Writer’s Conference volunteer meeting this year.

For some reason it missed one of us, and as for the rest, well let’s just say I think it is not exactly the most accurate tool yet!
Visit here and try it out. “How old do I look.net”

Update: The Daily Mail tried it out on a bunch of staff and wrote about it here.

Would you be happier if you were off of Facebook? This Dutch nonprofit initiative has created a website, 99 days of freedom, and is asking people to try their own experiment.

My own kids left FB years ago. On their own. They felt like the fights, the gossip and the drama was not worth it. All three of them say they are quite happy to not be on Facebook. Most of their friends are not on anymore either. The young people who still use it, tell me it for family and to keep in touch with their grandparents and family. How they use it has changed dramatically. The young people I am speaking with are college age and high school.
Most of them use Instagram and snapchat to communicate now.
Facebook paid one billion dollars for Instagram in 2012, so they found a way to get back and keep those kids who have migrated to Instagram.

Do you ever wonder what life is like without Facebook?
In response to Facebook’s controversial mood experiment involving some 700,000 unwitting users, we present you 99 Days of Freedom; an online study on how life without Facebook impacts user happiness. Joining is very simple: follow our three step instruction to join the experiment for as long as you like. We can’t wait to hear how you spend your time off.
Visit the website here.

Reaction to Facebook’s controversial mood manipulation study dominated headlines for a week. Lawmakers called for an investigation. Governments did, too. Consumer groups filed complaints. And of course, users threatened to leave.

The “99 Days of Freedom” initiative was dreamed up by employees at Just B.V., a creative agency in the Netherlands. It started as an office joke.

“Like a lot of Facebook users, many of us were bothered by reports of secret mood experiments,” Just’s art director, Merijn Straathof, said in a press release. “As we discussed it internally, we noted an interesting tendency: To a person, everyone had at least a ‘complicated’ relationship with Facebook. Whether it was being tagged in unflattering photos, getting into arguments with other users or simply regretting time lost through excessive use, there was a surprising degree of negative sentiment. Then someone joked, ‘I guess that the real question is, ‘How do you feel when you don’t use Facebook?’ There was group laughter, followed by, ‘Wait a second. That’s a really good question!”

Just chose 99 days because it thought users would lose interest if the campaign ran longer and it would be hard to measure emotional change if it was shorter. Straathof stressed the goal isn’t to protest Facebook or undermine its business. “Facebook is an incredible platform, we’re all fiercely loyal users and we believe that there’s a lot to love about the service,” he said.

As of early Friday morning, more than 6,000 people had signed up for the campaign, which was announced on Wednesday. That’s barely a drop in Facebook’s billion-user bucket.

Even if the campaign called for leaving Facebook altogether, would it work? Cornell University conducted a survey which it published in 2013 showing a quarter of Facebook users take breaks from the site by deactivating their account, and one in 10 completely quit. The survey was based on responses from 410 people – not exactly representative of Facebook’s much larger user base.

However there were some interesting results. The researchers found that Facebook users who deactivate their account are more likely to know someone else who has also deactivated – perhaps a sign that if enough people get mad at Facebook, a mass exodus could occur.

But mass exodus would mean overcoming the network effect. That would be tough. People might be mad at Facebook, but it’s still the site people use to catch up with friends and family. You can’t just leave it for another site because your friends aren’t on another site – they’re on Facebook. Even if you quit Facebook, you might be using another network it owns like Instagram or What’s App.

But plenty of alternative social networks are out there – some popping up just in time to capitalize on anti-Facebook rage. Sobrr is one such Facebook alternative. In a way, it’s the anti-Facebook. Instead of tracking everything you do, the site erases everything every 24 hours.

Erasing everything is a promise we’ve heard before. Remember Snapchat’s supposed commitment to privacy? Users were told photos and videos sent through the app would disappear within ten seconds, but it turned out they were being saved without users’ knowledge.

In many ways, Facebook owns you. When you clicked that little TOS box, (terms of service), you agreed to let Facebook use your content and photos. Now they have done something that I feel is ethically wrong. You and your friends, and followers may of been part of an experiment conducted by manipulating your feeds. Facebook manipulated over 683,000 of it’s users feeds to see how people reacted to either positive or negative posts from their friends. Conducting secret psychology experiment on users’ emotions. You can add this worry to your lack of control and privacy online with Facebook.

Facebook has conducted a secret massive psychology experiment on its users to find out how they respond to positive and negative messages – without telling participants.

The article above is from the Telegraph, UK and it is quite detailed. If you would like to read it, it has what is known as a “paywall” in front of it. The work around for that is open your browser in privacy mode or with Chrome, it is called incognito, so that is a good tip for you today. How to read protected articles online.

Facebook manipulated peoples feeds. Then they then monitored the users’ response, to see whether their friends’ attitude had an impact on their own.

“The results show emotional contagion,” wrote a team of Facebook scientists, in a paper published by the PNAS journal – Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists of the United States.

“When positive expressions were reduced, people produced fewer positive posts and more negative posts; when negative expressions were reduced, the opposite pattern occurred. These results indicate that emotions expressed by others on Facebook influence our own emotions, constituting experimental evidence for massive-scale contagion via social networks.”

Facebook were able to carry out the experiment because all users have to tick a box agreeing to their terms and conditions. These include “internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement.” So since you agree in the terms of service to basically whatever they want to do, you are powerless if you use Facebook. They also can use any of your photos anyway they want too. You do know that your profile and photo can be used in ads, right? To stop that from happening you have to select a certain set of privacy settings. Read the details on that here. How do you feel about having no control over your information or being used and manipulated in an experiment like this? I would like to hear from you.

If you feel like maybe it is time to leave Facebook here are directions on how to do that. How to leave facebook.

Facebook isn’t the only social media site to raise red flags for its handling of information recently. Buzzfeed has been accused of keeping user data gleaned from its popular quizzes, which are often shared on social media networks like Facebook.

Many Facebook users have little understanding of the way their personal data is used by the website, or what other parties may have access to that information. According to a Consumer Reports survey conducted before the experiment was reported, “only 37 percent of Facebook users say they have used the site’s privacy tools to customize how much information apps are allowed to see.”

It has emerged that Facebook first conducted research into the impact of posts on its users’ moods for 1,180 days between January 2009 and March 2012, look at the data of ‘all Facebook users in the 100 most populous US cities’, as reported by The Telegraph earlier this year. This just came out in the last few days. At first FB said it was only for one week! Obviously there is much more going on here than they want to tell the public.

Another article about this story by the Atlantic.

Everything We Know About Facebook’s Secret Mood Manipulation Experiment

They have manipulated your feeds to conduct a psychology experiment. How do you feel about that? Do you think this is ethical? They are treating their users like rats in a maze. I am not a fan of social media. I have always felt there are too many privacy rights at stake. In 1998 I was going to middle schools and high schools speaking to local PTA’s about online safety and myspace about how to keep your kids safe online. What I saw coming was a carelessness that people were showing by putting all kinds of personal information online. Today I never ceased to be amazed at how much people post online. Parent putting photos of their half naked kids on Instagram, and all social media. Their kids in the bath, in bathing suits and so forth. Bad idea- Mommy bloggers and parents and grandparents. Do you have any idea about the pedophiles and weirdos looking for photos like these of your kids and what they do with those photos? If these people could see that, and the dark world that is very real out there with the sickos, they would never do that again. That is just one aspect to worry about. Next came Google maps, showing photos of our homes, and cars and yards. Then we have all the underage kids using Facebook and very careless with it. They have no idea what they are putting out there and that fact is could haunt them for decades. In addition to the kids meeting older strange men that trolled for them online and so many stories like this today that are frighting. Everyone is responsible for what they put online and how they put out information. Facebook is a good networking tool, but if they are manipulating our communication and feeds with our followers, friends and business contacts, that is violating the spirit of what they do. This experiment was conducted in 2012, and the only reason it came out now, is the study was just published. I find this gravely disturbing. I would love to know how many other studies and what other manipulations have been going on with our Facebook accounts since then? Wouldn’t you? I am sure this was not a one time thing. We are all dollar signs to these social media companies. Now Facebook has share holders to answer too, and they need to make a profit. What do you think? If you are a Facebook user, how do you feel about the fact that it’s possible your posting feeds and your followers and those whom you may follow could be manipulated in this way by the company for research? Please leave a comment below.

Here is another great article I found on how to fix facebook privacy intrusion.

4 Facebook Privacy Intrusion Fixes

UPDATE 6/29/14

This is creating so much negative publicity that Facebook has a representative talking to the press.
Here is some of what he is saying.

Adam Kramer, Facebook data scientist and co-author of the study, has posted an explanation of the motivation behind the research, which he says serves as Facebook’s statement on the matter.

“The reason we did this research is because we care about the emotional impact of Facebook and the people that use our product,” says Kramer. “We felt that it was important to investigate the common worry that seeing friends post positive content leads to people feeling negative or left out. At the same time, we were concerned that exposure to friends’ negativity might lead people to avoid visiting Facebook.”

“IN HINDSIGHT, THE RESEARCH BENEFITS OF THE PAPER MAY NOT HAVE JUSTIFIED ALL OF THIS ANXIETY.

Really? Ya think so? Does this statement give you any reassurance about Facebook and what they can do with your information and account? I would like to know how many more of these kind of “experiments” and research have been done since 2012. Because you know there are more. We already know they use our account for all kinds of advertising experiments, and I am sure much more than we know. It will be interesting to see what else comes light after this brouhaha.

Update:2019 I have been keeping track of new articles with new viewpoints or that go deeper on this issue all week. This is not one of those stories that is dying down.

Yes, search engine submission is officially dead–and officially a scam.

Take a look at the UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email–spam) email that I received just recently, it looked like this:

The email is offering “search engine submission services” and the service, which costs a hefty $75.00 per year provides “submission and search engine ranking for domain owners”. The offer goes on to say:

Failure to complete your search engine registration by Nov 10, 2012 may result in the cancellation of this order (making it difficult for your customers to locate you using search engines on the web).

Sure, they want you to reply and pay for their “service” by a certain date. But it is absolutely a false and misleading statement when they say that “it will make it “difficult for your customers to locate you using search engines on the web”. That statement is not only misleading, it is WRONG. Let me make it very clear, here:

You do NOT have to submit your web site to the search engines. The search engines have been crawling and indexing web sites without any issues whatsoever for many years now. Submitting to search engines stopped being effective over 10 years ago. The best way to get your web site indexed properly in the search engines is to get links from other web sites to your web site. Furthermore, I have actually proven that within minutes of registering a new domain name, Google will visit your web site, in an attempt to crawl its pages and index the content. That’s without having to submit your URL to a search engine

Here is a photo of the volunteers for that year! 2005.
The only two from this photo who are still volunteering, are Kate Farrell, and myself. I am sure we are missing a few people in this photo. We have 75 volunteers, so it is a big crew. As the Volunteer Director, I must say our volunteers do an amazing job.
We could not put on this wonderful event without all of their help.
Kate is the current President of the Women’s National Book Association, SF Chapter, and I am the former President.
I love Masterchef Australia, and then I started watching Masterchef UK season 9, and I just finished it last night. It was quite enjoyable. The cooking was amazing. One of the contestants you could not help but like and root for is a talented young lady named Natalie Coleman. She is a lovely person, humble, hard working, sweet and close to her family. She feeds her Grandpa and Uncle, to help look after them and because she loves them. She tries out her recipes on her Grandpa. He must love that. She is a creative and talented cook. She seemed to have things so well thought out. I thought it must be her career in finance, she was so orderly and always made sense with her food. I wanted her to win. Also I love it when the girls win!

So she won and I was excited for her and I looked her up online, and she is doing many things now like cooking shows and creating a cookbook with the other two finalists from her season. I found her twitter account and I congratulated her. Drop in the big bucket of the twitter ocean, right? She favorited my tweet and said, “Techno lovin’ foody! MasterChef Winner 2013 http://t.co/QXPxQrUDmg” Natalie Coleman @NatalieColeman1

I thought that was so cool. I just watched her win last night, ( she actually won last Dec, and had to keep it quiet until May of this year.) and then I can just connect with her that easily? That kind of stuff is what makes social media fun, right?

Another fun thing I use the internet for all the time is finding songs I hear on programs with a piece of music I like.
In the Masterchef UK penultimate season 9 episode they had this beautiful piano piece near the end that I had to find. It just gripped me.
Those of you who know me, know I am a search engine ninja. I can find just about any information you could ask for online. People, places, things and all things helpful…
One of the keys to finding obscure information online is to google it in many different ways. You can just drop in related words, or a question, or a sentence, or even if you only have one line of lyrics, it is amazing how fast you can find a song or piece of music with limited information.
In this case I asked the question, “what was the piano piece at the end of Masterchef UK episode 22”? It took me about 30 minutes to finally find a facebook group where one member posted the name of the piece and where the music could be found. Score! I love it when that happens.
I went straight to Amazon and bought it for 99 cents. How great is that? Talk about instant gratification, (delayed by the search, but all the sweeter for the hunt.)
I do not personally use any of those song recognition apps like Shazam or Soundhound and there are more, but thank goodness other people do, because those apps seem to find quite a bit of music and then the users will post it. I sincerely thank all the people who leave the rest of us breadcrumbs online to find things. I try to pay that forward on websites when I know the answers.

Good karma right? Take a listen to the piece of music I found. It is called “Snow Falls” by Adam Burns.

Snow Falls

So my question of the day is, do you use twitter and how do you use it? Really use it. Because most people I meet and know, sign up try it out for awhile and then stop using it. I have my websites set up to auto post to twitter, facebook and linkedin when I publish a new post. I use a free program called twitterfeed. It is very simple to use, and you only need to spend about 30 minutes one time setting it up and then you never go back there again. This works for me, since I get stressed out trying to track everyone and things on the social media scene. I get a big case of the “overwhelms”. Do you get that too when you work online?

There is so much to do online already. I have my work which is all web based and then to spend time tweeting and promoting myself is like the last block of a Jenga game that will topple me. Do you have a fun story or cool connection you made because of twitter?
