From NPR's Morning Edition on March 11th.
------
Our occasional series with people of broad experience turns this week to a man characterized by his faith — and his willingness to fight.

In the era of apartheid, Archbishop Desmond Tutu railed against the injustice and inhumanity of South Africa's government, and his passionate advocacy helped make the change that came to that country in the 1990s.

Rebuilding A Cathedral of Compassion - A Sermon

By the Rev. David Simmons. The Episcopal Church of today is not the church of power and influence it was a generation ago. This is a natural consequence of the Church beginning to see the Gospel as something that requires us to take positions on issues of human rights. We are still in the process of rebuilding who we are. (And yes, I am aware that I get the date of MLK's visit to the National Cathedral wrong - I'm preaching without notes.)

Senator Danforth on Faith, Evangelicals and the GOP

Many know John Danforth as a former three-term U.S. Senator from Missouri, and former Ambassador to the United Nations. But the Midwestern Republican's interests stretch far beyond politics. Danforth is also an ordained Episcopal priest. The public servant talks openly about his faith and why he believes right-wing evangelicals have done more harm than good for the GOP.

This I Believe - Sara Miles

All Things Considered, May 5, 2008 · "Until recently, I thought being a Christian was all about belief. I didn't know any Christians, but I considered them people who believed in the virgin birth, for example, the way I believed in photosynthesis or germs.

But then, in an experience I still can't logically explain, I walked into a church and a stranger handed me a chunk of bread. Suddenly, I knew that it was made out of real flour and water and yeast — yet I also knew that God, named Jesus, was alive and in my mouth."

Sara Miles is founder of The Food Pantry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. A former restaurant cook, Miles is a journalist who writes about military affairs, politics and culture, and is author of the memoir Take This Bread.

Fresh Air from WHYY, April 16, 2008 · It's been four years since Gene Robinson was consecrated bishop of the Episcopal diocese of New Hampshire. He's faced challenges and controversies as that denomination's first openly gay bishop — and he's written about them in a new memoir, In the Eye of the Storm: Swept to the Center by God.

Formerly married, with two daughters and granddaughters, Robinson came out publicly in the 1980s, and has been in a relationship with his partner, Mark Andrew, for two decades. He remains close to his ex-wife and his family, many of whom attended his consecration. But his openness, together with other issues surrounding gay people of faith, has caused controversy within the church, with conservative Anglicans threatening to leave the denomination.

Here and Now from PRI - The Episcopal Church in North America is near schism over the debate on same-sex unions and the consecration of gay marriage. The church's stance on gay rights is threatening to tear apart not only the church, but two brothers in Massachusetts, both of them priests. Bishop William Murdock is a member of a group of Anglican priests who want to create a new branch of the Anglican Church to rival the Episcopalians. He recently traveled to Africa to be consecrated by a more conservative branch of the Anglican Church in Kenya. He has since been defrocked by the Episcopal Church. William's brother Brian Murdock is an openly gay Episcopal priest. Robin Young talks to both brothers about the how they reconcile with one another, and the future of their church.

The idea of Biblical Literalism is one of short pedigree within the Christian community. Its ascendancy in the 20th century as the premier way of interpreting scripture presents a threat to both Christian tradition and the relationship between science and
religion. This lecture will address the history of fundamentalism and the idea of Biblical Inerrancy and their impact on both religion and
science. A lecture at Murray State University.

By The Rev. David Simmons - The National Cathedral is a symbol of the past affluence of the Episcopal Church. Martin Luther King Jr.'s last Sunday sermon from its pulpit may have changed the church in a mystical way. We are now building a new cathedral, a "Cathedral of Compassion" in the Millenium Development Goals.

This summer, General Convention passed Resolution A129 including, "That Episcopalians strongly encourage state legislatures and state and local boards of education to establish standards for science education based on the best available scientific knowledge as accepted by a consensus of the scientific community." This is an interesting podcast talking to two leading scientists who are also believers and find no inherent conflict between science and faith.

From the NPR site:

Can a world class scientist also be a devout Christian? Join Ira Flatow on Science Friday for a look at the challenges of balancing a scientific career with religious beliefs. Ira will be joined by Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, and Harvard Astronomer Owen Gingerich.

As the fifth anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11 approaches, Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold calls on all people to commit to "a future in which the events of that day will not be repeated."

In a video statement, also available as audio or podcast, Griswold says: "I can think of no better way to observe the passage of five years since the horrific events of September 11, 2001 than to commit ourselves, individually, as a church, and as a nation to looking for new ways to pursue healing and restoration in the world God so loves."

Griswold also upholds the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals as giving the governments of the world a clear and workable plan for addressing "the vast disparity between the wealth of nations ... and the extreme poverty of nearly half of the world's people."

Jonathan Myrick Daniels - A Sermon for Pentecost 10

In March of 1965, MLK put out a call for students and others to join him in Selma, Alabama for a march to the state capital in Montgomery to demonstrate support for his civil rights program. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, a young seminarian at Episcopal Theological School named Jonathan Myrick Daniels receieved word of the march. He mulled it over during Evening Prayer. He later wrote: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." I had come to Evening Prayer as usual that evening, and as usual I was singing the Magnificat with the special love and reverence I have always felt for Mary's glad song. "He hath showed strength with his arm." As the lovely hymn of the God-bearer continued, I found myself peculiarly alert, suddenly straining toward the decisive, luminous, Spirit-filled "moment" that would, in retrospect, remind me of others--particularly one at Easter three years ago. Then it came. "He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things." I knew then that I must go to Selma. The Virgin's song was to grow more and more dear in the weeks ahead."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has set out his thinking on the future of the Anglican Communion in the wake of the deliberations in the United States on the Windsor Report and the Anglican Communion at the 75th General Convention of The Episcopal Church (USA). ‘The Challenge and Hope of Being an Anglican Today, A Reflection for the Bishops, Clergy and Faithful of the Anglican Communion’, has been sent to Primates with a covering letter, published more widely and made available as audio on the internet. In it, Dr Williams says that the strength of the Anglican tradition has been in maintaining a balance between the absolute priority of the Bible, a catholic loyalty to the sacraments and a habit of cultural sensitivity and intellectual flexibility:

An essay on the definition of "Orthodoxy."
Excerpt: "Only God decides who is saved. We simply say that we trust that the church is within God's salvific plan. Orthodoxy does not even create a "Litmus test" as to who is acceptable in the church and who is not. It provides a basic, expansive, and elegant framework within which theological speculation can occur. It does not so much set definite outer limits to speculation as it sets a gravitic mass which draws speculation towards itself."

A sermon from The Rev. Frank logue at King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland, Georgia.

"When we gather with friends and families, what do we tell one another about our lives? These are our stories. Stories are such an important part of our lives. The stories we tell help make sense of our lives. Listen at a family reunion, or even a funeral and you'll hear lots of stories. Funny stories. Tragic stories. Stories full of the drama of daily life. One good reunion and you'll realize how tame, or at least unrealistic Soap Operas are. The true stories are so much more gripping.
