Is it nearly as bad as the Twitter hype machine insists?

One thinks it’s a bigger disaster than “Batman v Superman,” while the other saw some bright spots.

I still haven’t seen every movie, but I’ve sampled pretty much all I can of those I’ve yet to see. Still, I went with scores and songs from films I did catch up with, especially since the context in which the music is used is so important and is why it worked for me.

My biggest surprise in movie music this year is that so few scores with a full orchestra made my list. You’ll hear lots of electronically powered work from some remarkable modern artists, but that said, there is no movie music of the year list without some full orchestra, and from the very best at it.

That said, please enjoy as I share my favorite music I heard in movies during 2015.

Kanye West – “Runaway”

Our friend Ben Stark’s new short film “Dead Saturday” stars Oscar-nominee Eric Roberts (“Inherent Vice,” “The Dark Knight,” “Runaway Train”) as Pastor Malcolm and Kurt Krause (“True Detective”) as troubled youth Jimmy, who interprets a loophole in the Bible as a free pass to sin without consequence on the Saturday before Easter.

Acclaimed young Shoals-area band The Bear contributed an original score.The film will screen at Druid City Brewing Company in Tuscaloosa on July 11 at 6 p.m. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow, with another screening of the movie right after.

After a series of statewide screenings, the filmmakers will then take the film to as many regional film festivals as they can manage, including this year’s Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, so stay tuned for programming information.

Ben talked to Stark about the themes and ideas explored in this film, why the short format suited this project, how to find the right people to help make it and how he plans to get more eyes on the movie moving forward.

They also look ahead to the rest of summer 2015 which promises even more good times with movies like “Ant-Man,” “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

Chuck Jackson – “Any Day Now” (heard in “Inherent Vice”)

While I’ve still got a handful of movies from last year I still want and need to see, all or most of the music from the 2014 film year remains accessible. So I’m not ready to make a top 10 list of my favorite movies, but I do feel good about this list of my favorite movie music.

Personally, I feel like 2014 was an exceptional year for it. We heard career best original work from some of the industry’s best composers like Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat and the duo of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, plus an array of pop songs used beautifully in memorable scenes I won’t soon forget.

In fact, those three composers deserve special recognition for the jobs they did on three specific films, although their work appears in multiple movies in 2014, some of which landed on this list.

It’s hard to pick one true favorite piece of music from the 2014 film year. As you’ll read below, there’s a ton of good stuff out there. If pressed, my favorite scores came from “Interstellar,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Gone Girl,” and I’d give my favorite soundtrack or song compilation to “Inherent Vice.”

The nominees will be announced on Jan. 15, but the guys think they mostly know what to expect.

Alexandre Desplat – “A Prayer For Madame D” (from “The Grand Budapest Hotel”)

Ben and Corey hop aboard Christopher Nolan’s deep space opus “Interstellar” starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.

The guys get into only slight spoiler territory as they break down Nolan’s latest and perhaps most ambitious blockbuster and determine whether it lived up to their lofty expectations.

They also discuss writer/director Dan Gilroy’s Los Angeles-set comedy/thriller “Nightcrawler,” starring a brilliant Jake Gyllenhaal as a morally bankrupt crime journalist looking to conquer a competitive and dangerous industry.

The guys then hit director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s grim meta-comedy “Birdman,” starring Michael Keaton in a comeback role that may or may even outshine the film and what few consider a style-over-substance technical and immersive experience.

Finally, Ben and Corey spend some time on Pixar’s recent announcement that we’ll get “Toy Story 4,” among other sequels that Corey thinks defies the standard in original storytelling the animation studio set years ago.

They also get weird with Kevin Smith’s even weirder body horror comedy “Tusk,” starring Justin Long and Michael Parks. Should Smith have let this nutty germ of an idea drift away into the smoke-filled podcasting studio, or did he actually capitalize and create a new cult classic? Don’t think too hard.

Ben’s brother Graham Flanagan also joins the guys to talk Woody Allen’s latest romantic comedy “Magic in the Moonlight,” starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone. Two out of three agree it’s another home run for Allen, but one tries to bring that notion back down to Earth.

Ben talks briefly with Tuscaloosa-born and New York-based photographer Miller Mobley who shot the above portrait of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who passed away at 46 on Sunday.

Mobley reflects on the shoot, which took place last February when Hoffman was doing press for his film “A Late Quartet,” along with co-star Christopher Walken.

The photographer goes into detail about Hoffman’s behavior on set during the brief window of opportunity he had to shoot one of the best portraits of his young career.

The guys even caught Ron Howard’s Formula One racing rivalry flick “Rush” starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl, which both agree is entertaining but a little light on substance.

Corey hasn’t seen Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut “Don Jon” just yet, but Ben insists he and others would get a kick out of the comedy about a man trying to beat an addiction but more importantly making an effort to better himself and change his outlook on relationships.

Ben and Corey, joined by Bloomberg producer Graham Flanagan, witness the healing power or total fraud that is Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film “The Master” and make time for Rian Johnson’s third film “Looper.”

In a SPOILER-HEAVY discussion, the guys behold the technical and acting clinics at play in Anderson’s complex tale of aimlessness, manipulation and love in post-WW2 American. There’s no doubt Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman deliver powerful performances, but cracking Anderson’s code proves quite challenging. They all look forward to revisiting.

Graham and Corey dig all or most of Johnson’s time travel thriller, while Ben can only go about halfway in his praise after he feels the story his a narrative brick wall about halfway through. But the concept, effects, performances and clever balancing of timelines make “Looper” a must-see. (Some spoilers)

Ben and Corey butt heads this week but not on Andrew Stanton’s science fiction adventure “John Carter,” which delivers like a blockbuster should despite falling into the dreaded all-time box office disaster category.

The guys don’t get the backlash in the wake of a befuddling marketing campaign that failed to connect with audiences, even when the $250 million-budgeted film has mainstream appeal.

Where the hosts disagree is on the cop comedy “21 Jump Street,” starring Jonah Hill and Cullman native Channing Tatum, who shows signs of life in this very funny film. Corey thinks it’s a modern comedy classic, but Ben thinks that’s stretching it a little.

They spend extra time dissecting the “John Carter” debacle, wondering how a Disney tent-pole release could ever fall victim to so much negative criticism before it ever played in a single theater.

Ben and Corey strap in for director Nicolas Winding Refn’s superb, violent character study “Drive,” starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan.

Both agree “Drive” is one of the best films of 2011 so far, and if it’s any indicator of how the rest of the fall season will shape up, we’ve got plenty of good things to anticipate.

With FilmNerds.com editor Matt Scalici, Corey takes an early look at Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball,” an adaptation of Michael Lewis’ book about Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) who used Sabermetrics to evaluate baseball players and build a winning franchise.

Rounding out the show is an interview with Time Magazine editor and entertainment writer Gilbert Cruz, who recaps his experience covering the Toronto International Film Festival. The festival now serves as the go-to launchpad for likely Oscar contenders.

At this year’s festival were Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia,” George Clooney’s “The Ides of March” and several other buzzed-about films.

Director Terrence Malick rarely wastes a frame with whatever puts on the screen, especially in his latest feature film “The Tree of Life.”

Ben and Corey, joined by Ben’s dad Steve Flanagan, dissect Malick’s exploration of childhood, memory, loss of innocence and existence. Deep stuff, we know.

The film brought home 2011’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or and still finds itself in the Oscar discussion this year. You can bet it will end up on plenty of top 10 lists later this year, perhaps including those made by this show’s hosts.

Ben’s brother Graham then joins the show to talk about “Senna,” a documentary about three-time world champion Formula One racer Ayrton Senna.

Rounding it out, the panel discusses parenting and movies, specifically what goes into the decision-making process of when to let a child see R-rated movies or more mature content.

Ben and Corey are just as pleasantly surprised as the rest of American audiences who thought “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” looked downright stupid.

The concept may still be, but the result is a gripping science fiction story that may be the best of the overloaded series, with respect to the great Charlton Heston, and one of the best films of 2011 so far. It at least helps us forget about that awful Tim Burton remake from 2001, so that’s a plus.

Ben and Corey then caulk the wagon and ford the river to discuss neo-realist auteur Kelly Reichardt’s Oregon Trail film “Meek’s Cutoff,” a challenging and deliberately paced study of lost pioneers in dire need of water and guidance.

The guys also welcome Ben’s brother Graham from New York to talk about “Bellflower,” a buzz-worthy indie release that caused a stir at the Sundance Film Festival this year.

Corey and guest host Phil Owen take on the latest in cowboys fighting aliens movies, ahem, “Cowboys & Aliens,” director Jon Favreau’s big budget adaptation of the lesser known graphic novel.

While the film looks great and is packed with star power and special effects, it just doesn’t seem to deliver on its promising concept of mixing the two beloved genres of westerns and science fiction.

Also on tap are new trailers for Peter Berg’s board game adaptation “Battleship” and producer/co-writer George Lucas’ Tuskegee Airmen adventure “Red Tails.”

Finally, the guys unveil their top five alien invasion movies, which include “Independence Day,” “Mars Attacks!” “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”

The guys liked the movie overall, as well as the little nugget that comes after the credits…[spoiler-ish]…a teaser trailer for “The Avengers.” So stick around.

Ben and Corey visit Hogwarts one more time for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the final chapter in the top grossing film franchise of all time.

The guys dig the last hurrah so much, they put it up there with the best of director Richard Yates’ superb contributions along with the series’ other best efforts.

They also discuss Michael Bay’s latest obscure character study, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which follows the subtle and sensible formula the thoughtful director stuck to the first couple of times.

Joining the show is Ben’s brother Graham, who shares his thoughts on the “Bill Cunningham New York,” a documentary about the New York Times fashion photographer.

Ben and Corey endure and enjoy Danny Boyle’s latest best picture nominee “127 Hours,” the gripping tale of adventurer Aron Ralston’s unbelievable survival after getting his hand caught in a boulder in the canyons of Utah in 2003.

Best actor nominee James Franco delivers arguably his best performance to date as Ralston, an adrenaline junkie and amateur wilderness guide who struggles to decide whether or not he has anything worth living for once in the predicament. The film has six Oscar nominations.

The guys also talk about the Oscar nominations, including what got snubbed and what will and should win at this month’s ceremony.

Ben and Corey welcome back Ben’s brother Graham to break down Darren Aronofsky’s controversial ballet thriller “Black Swan,” starring surefire best actress Oscar nominee Natalie Portman.

Keeping it a family affair, Ben’s sister and former ballet dancer Suzanne Flanagan also joins the show to discuss the technical side of the film’s dancing. Suzanne works in the development department of New York City’s Martha Graham Dance Company and has danced on stage much of her life. She provides a keen critical eye to what the film got right and wrong from a dancer’s perspective and how Portman might fair as a real-life ballerina.

Graham then returns to weigh in on Sofia Coppola’s latest “Somewhere,” a quiet character study about a movie star (playing in limited release). He also discusses his recent about-face on best picture frontrunner “The Social Network” after getting a sneak peek at the Blu-ray DVD (released today).

Graham also interviews CNN colleague Ali Velshi, the network’s chief financial correspondent, who appears as himself in the film. Velshi talks about his experiences working with Stone as well as the contrast between the U.S. economy in 1987 and during the 2008 collapse.

The guys also talk about their favorite movies about money.

This week, we review George Clooney’s latest thriller, “The American.” But just how thrilling is it? Just 20 minutes into Ben’s screening, he heard loud (and telling) snoring a few rows down.

Somehow, the slowly paced film, set in Italy with a mostly foreign cast, about a tortured assassin managed to finish first in last week’s box office race. So maybe something’s working.

UA alumnus and current filmmaker and Los Angeles resident talks to Ben and Corey about moving to and working in Hollywood shortly after graduating.

Morehead worked as Christopher Nolan’s personal assistant on THE PRESTIGE, and he even appeared in that same film. I’m afraid I can’t divulge which character he played, given it’s a spoiler. It came out in 2006, but it’s too great a movie to ruin it for those who never saw it.

Morehead also worked on THE DARK KNIGHT and recently wrapped on Steven Spielberg’s upcoming THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN.

On the show, he talks about working on those films with those esteemed directors as well as what new graduates can do to get a foot in the door within the highly competitive entertainment industry out West.

Morehead is a product of the UA telecommunication and film department, so his story is a testament to what today’s TCF kids can one day accomplish.

So far, we’ve had six shows since my hiatus after “Reeling” back in 2008. Guests have included critic Glenn Kenny, author Cathleen Falsani and several past contributors who bring a ton of knowledge and passion to the table. Look for more terrific guests to join us each week.

We broadcast live on Saturdays at 9 a.m. on 90.7-FM in Tuscaloosa. Sadly, there is currently no internet stream, so if you’re out of town, you can’t listen live. Thank goodness for podcasts! They usually go up a few hours after the broadcast, so keep an eye out.

A brief introduction to your hosts:

Ben Flanagan was the entertainment editor at the UA newspaper The Crimson White and program director for 90.7-FM. He is currently a journalist in Alabama, and he writes an entertainment column for the Tuscaloosa News which you can find every Friday. Visit his blog Ben Around.

Corey Craft also worked as CW entertainment editor as well as editor-in-chief of the same publication. He is currently editor of the Corolla yearbook for UA and also writes a DVD column for the Tuscaloosa News on Fridays. Corey also frequently contributes to CHUD.com.
