I got a simple question from a reader that reminded me I might be over-estimating people’s knowledge of lasers.

I keep blogging about laser facials and how they improved my skin from the inside out and removed a few stubborn imperfections on my skin, etc. But I thought that now might be a great time for me to start from the beginning, a drop little knowledge here to help you find out if a laser facial is right for you… So here goes:

What is a laser facial?

Clinics can use any of a variety of lasers to give your skin a clearer, smoother and more even appearance. Here’s a simple list of skin solutions the laser facial provides:

* Elimination of smooth, raised, or depressed scars

* Smooth out fine wrinkles and expression lines

* Reduce pigmentation (sun spots)

* Diminish tiny blood vessels

* Firm up skin tone

How does a laser facial work?

A laser facial is performed with a laser system that uses an intense beam of light to change the appearance of your skin without any incisions. You have to wear special goggles to protect your eyes during the procedure.

Lasers heat the skin just below the surface, which stimulates collagen production so that the newly exposed skin is tighter and smoother.

I’ve been doing laser facials every 6 weeks and my skin has never looked better. It’s really a case where science has created an amazing way to rejuvenate skin and people just have to understand it and try it. The investment will pay off in spades when you look and feel your best.

Shaving usually gets a bad rap… With good reason, since it’s messy, repetitive, makes you hairier and gives you ingrown hairs and stubble. Okay, inhale… exhale… Now the latest from the Shaving Sucks files is this unfortunate news item:

“A 37 year-old Florida woman caused an accident when she tried to shave her bikini while driving. The woman was on her way to see her boyfriend. The crash only resulted in minor injuries but the woman was arrested the week earlier for driving under the influence.”

Gross, weird and unfortunate. That’s what I think about that. Now, if this Florida had attended to her grooming properly, she could have avoided this incident… But something tells me this woman has bigger problems now…

THIS JUST IN: Mo’Nique Hates Shaving Her Legs… But How Does She Feel About Laser Hair Removal?

Do you remember a while back, I blogged about Mo’Nique and her hairy legs on the Golden Globes red carpet? Well, turns out I was too jaded by photoshop to realize that it was a REAL picture. At the time I thought her hairy legs were a paparazzi prank, like when they photoshopped Nicole Richie to look a skeleton or when they gave Angelina Jolie fish gills.

Anyway, I was dead wrong. But I had to hear it from the horse’s mouth to believe it… Turns out Mo’Nique revealed a lot when she sat down with a Barbara Walters for a pre-Oscar gabfest. The precious star proudly spoke about her open marriage and her hairy legs. (I’m not sure what makes me cringe more… Open marriage or hairy legs? What’s the point of marriage if you’re going to act single? And the hairy legs? Well, that’s so just many shades of wrong…)

“I’m very comfortable and secure with my husband. He loves my hairy legs,” she said. “I tried shaving one time. It was so uncomfortable,” Mo’Nique said.

So, listen up Mo’Nique, this is what I think about your hairy legs… They’re like Rice-a-Roni. If you’ve only ever had Rice-a-Roni, then you don’t know how good a Risotto a la Milanese is… You see what I’m saying?

Sure, your husband (and maybe even you) have gotten used to the long prickly hairs on your legs, and sure shaving is annoying, messy and ultimately useless. Hi,

We would–of course–only recommend laser. Lasers are both more effective and safer than Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). IPL uses a beam of incoherent light, often with a cream or gel, to burn the hair shaft. A serious flaw with these systems is that they lack the laser’s ability to produce a selective bandwidth of light that will only affect the hair follicle.

Lasers work by sending a targeted pulse laser light directly into your hair follicle without disturbing the surrounding skin. The light is absorbed by the melanin (or pigment) in your hair follicle and converted into heat, which permanently disables your hair follicles from growing a new hair.

Intense Pulsed Light devices produce a wide bandwidth of light that can heat up all of the surrounding tissue, making it less effective in killing hair and putting the patient at a higher risk for burns, especially on darker skin. IPLs are generally cheaper than true laser devices and are used for various skin procedures first and foremost, with hair removal as an add-on feature. They are considered an outdated form of technology. As a rule, true hair removal lasers usually achieve better and faster hair removal results.

Your pale skin and dark hair make you an ideal candidate for laser. All other issues aside, you will likely see very effective results with few to no complications.

Ambassador Seeks Divorce Over “Hairy Bride”

What a crazy story… An ambassador to Dubai accused his bride of hiding her facial hair with a veil and demanded an instant divorce!

Apparently after the wedding ceremony he lifted his new wife’s veil and saw her dark thick upper lip hair and beard. The groom claimed his mother-in-law tricked him into the marriage by showing him photographs of the bride’s less-hairy sister. And every time he met his bride in person she wore a face-covering naqib veil the whole time. In the end, the groom was granted the divorce but rejected his demand for $140,000 in compensation for bridal gifts he spent on his future wife.

Wow, it must be pretty rough on the bride to be treated like mislabeled merchandise. Ladies, what’s the opposite of love at first sight?

The worst part for her was probably when the court sent the bride, who was a physician herself, to a specialist after her temporary “better half” demanded she be examined for “hormonal deficiencies.” The test came back normal. We all get a little peach fuzz now and then–it’s kind of rough to divorce someone over it in this day and age when we have a permanent hair removal option out there.

How effective is laser hair removal?

Answer:

Hi,

Laser hair removal works by sending a targeted pulse laser light directly into your hair follicle. The light is absorbed by the melanin (or pigment) in your hair follicle and converted into heat, which permanently disables your hair follicles from growing a new hair. The darker the hair, the better able the laser will be concentrated in the hair shaft, destroying it. However, many lasers exist on the market that can treat dark skin–Cynosure’s Elite system, for example.

Laser hair removal requires between at least four and six sessions for best results – a permanent reduction of approximately 95-99% of your unwanted hair. Factors that determine the length of treatment include genetics, the area to be treated, the frequency of treatments, the laser, and the skill of the operator.

Electrolysis is better for destroying light-colored or fine hairs, but can be expensive and time-consuming for large areas because each hair is treated individually. Full face electrolysis would take about two years and up to $2,000 dollars, where a laser would take around six sessions spread six to eight weeks apart at a cost of under half that. If you need an area, completely, completely hair-free, the best method is to use laser for your first six sessions, and then follow up with electrolysis to catch any strays.
