The team at Associates in Periodontics

Most rewarding for Shanin is her work teaching homecare to her patients and the daily “aha moments” that really make a difference in their lives. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, taking fitness classes, hiking, cosmetology and music. One of Shanin’s colleagues at AIP describes her favorite memory in the office as when she heard Shanin sing a song in Italian to a nervous patient who couldn’t speak English. Shanin enjoys her coworkers. She regards them as her “family away from home” and says that everyone at AIP “works hard to take good care of our patients.”

- I am amazed at what can be accomplished when everyone is focused on a goal. The proof is on the second floor at 1775 Williston Road.
- People really can “rise to the occasion.” I have witnessed it first hand.
- The phrase “The End” can sometimes actually be “The Beginning” in disguise.
- While in North Carolina, unknowingly choosing Grand Isle granite, Williston maple and Middlebury blue, while staying in room number 247, makes me—a very scientific man—believe that fate may actually be a reality.
- Watching a building burn to the ground is exciting and mesmerizing for so many onlookers. But, it is emotionally brutal for a small quiet group, huddled together in the rain, holding hands amongst the crowd. Look for them, they need a hug.
- My family is much larger than I thought. It includes my staff, friends, peers and patients. They care more than I could have ever imagined.
- My wife Cindy is amazing.
- The fire destroyed our building but not our spirit. Nothing will ever take that away. I guarantee it.

First, the physical setting: We are working out of the second floor den in the Boss’s home, a wide, open room, with top to bottom windows facing a calming view. We catch a few moments breath watching the foliage change in front of the deep blue and steel grey backdrop of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack sky.

And then there is Thunder. No, not the rolling bass frequencies of Wagnerian boom that can accompany strong storms on the lake. Nor even the amusing vision of Irving’s Dutch Dwarves rolling nine-pins along the Hudson River Valley. This Thunder is a black mop of curly hair that surrounds the most gentle framework of the Boss’s Standard Labradoodle.

He is the epitome of a good host, graciously and quietly accepting a raft of boisterous strangers into his home. In doing so, he has never complained. For all of us, and especially for me as a “doggie person,” Thunder is a panacea beyond worth.

He is ever attuned to the frustrations of the group, having that innate sense that tells him when we need his attention and affections. He soaks up anger and ennui in a coat softer than cashmere, and after a reassuring nose nibble, he looks at you with the largest, liquid brown eyes that let you know that he understands, empathizes, and if he only had thumbs, he’d be glad to do some of your job and take the weight off your shoulders.

I very easily fell into looking forward to seeing T-man (as I called him). The best part of my days were walking him out for pee breaks and romping with him in the backyard. Now we are in larger interim space, a move that by any standard would be counted as an improvement. But I miss my canine companion. Maybe we could hire him as a Therapy Consultant. All power and glory to The T-man! Thunder rules!

When Helen’s not at work, she keeps busy as the Treasurer for the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation. They raise money to help military members and their families. She’s also the co-chairperson for the silent auction for the Travis Roy Foundation Wiffle-Ball Tournament, which raises money for individuals with spinal cord injuries. During the fall months, Helen and her husband remain busy maintaining their own apple orchard, Chapin Apple Orchard, in Essex, Vermont.

The holiday season reminds us how grateful we are for those we love and have loved and for the generous support of so many people. We will carry our gratitude into the New Year for the kindness and encouragement you have given us in 2011.

I do admit I’m a little overwhelmed by the thoughts of a new office, but excited to practice in a state-of-the-art clinical space.  For the time being, the AIP hygienists are reporting to 1775 Williston Road and keeping busy learning the enhanced computerized system.  The construction has begun and January, 2012 is right around the corner.  The overall feeling is we just can’t wait to see our patients.

• The Burlington Fire Department, for their brave and skillful containment of the fire.
• Our patients who have expressed their concern, loyalty, and unending support.
• Our colleagues in the dental community who offered space for us to care for our emergent patients.
• Our wonderful staff in the Barre office who have been adding many of our Burlington patients to their already busy schedules.
• Tyler and Jamie of Tyler Scott Architects.
• Our very giving Burlington staff who have “held the fort” manning our phones, re-scheduling patients, caring for patients in Barre, working on many projects to fit up our interim space and doing all of this in good spirits as we re-group.
• Skip, Faye, Ann and Barb from ICV and the city officials in South Burlington who have facilitated the process for our fitting up our interim space at 1775 Williston Road; and those in Burlington who are assisting us with the process of re-building at 247 Pearl Street.

It is both humbling and rewarding to be part of such an outstanding community. We wish you all a grand Thanksgiving.

Kathy has been with Associates in Periodontics for 3½ years. She started as a dental hygienist and soon became a surgical assistant to Dr. Kolesar. For four years Kathy volunteered as a Tooth-Tutor dental hygienist for the State of Vermont. She also participated in the Penguin Plunge for Special Olympics and Relay for Life. For many years she’s been involved with the community theatre and still deciding if she’s a budding Ethel Merman or Lucille Ball.

Kathy enjoys working at Associates in Periodontics because her colleagues and patients remind her of a close-knit family. “From the first footstep inside our door, to the last wave good-bye, our patients are made to feel like family. Smiles are freely exchanged and hugs tend to follow. We chat about their health, their families, and their lives. We are passionate in all that we do and that makes all the difference.”
