Your Moon Sign and Your Soul Purpose

The Moon is the storehouse of what I like to call out “biological karma”. On exoteric and psychological levels, she is literally and figuratively our mother. She thus represents the nature of the most basic of all of our relationship. The Moon in our natal horoscope therefore speaks to us of our primary needs: food, shelter, material and emotional security. The position of the Moon by sign, house, and aspects to the other planets in our chart, tells us a great deal about our instinctual relationship to such needs.

How do we fulfill these primary urges? What constitutes for each of us our instinctual pattern of response when deprived of these basic elements of personal security? In a man´s horoscope, the Moon indicates our relationship to women and to our own inner feminine nature. The lunar position will often indicate the kind of women we seek out for relationship and the nature of the emotional dynamics within such relationship. In a woman´s chart, the placement of the Moon is fundamental. It indicates a woman´s basic health as the Moon regulates her 28-day cycle as well as her ability to express her urge to nurture, to be supportive, and literally, to mother. In the horoscope of both men and women, the Moon reveals the scope and quality of our primary emotional nature, its drives and instinctual patterns.

The Moon has two other major functions in the exoteric horoscope of the personality life. She is first and foremost the representative of the past. With her is locked the memories of all of our biological ancestors, and thus in this way holds an important key to our past lives. Who and what we are has a great deal to do with the biological matrix out of which we came. In this respect, all of our ancestors can be said to still be “alive” through each one of us and we pass on that life (and those racial/family memories) to our children. It will be your Cancer (ruled by the Moon) grandmother or grandfather who will have the deepest and clearest memories of the family tree and its history!

The memories of your forgotten ancestors do indeed live through you, only we do not remember their experiences. What we do have within us is the second major lunar factor, instinct. So many of our patterns of behavior, our likes and dislikes, our tastes in food and home environments, are conditioned not only by our parental background but by the collective history of earthly experience of our progenitors! The Moon therefore governs the entire scope of this biological history (firmly locked within the molecules of DNA in our genes and chromosomes) and is thus the source of our instinctual responses to life.

The process of spiritual evolution requires that we move from instinct to intuition; from unconscious patterns of response based on the biological past to a conscious participation in the creation of Life. This is not such an easy task as it requires us to leave the womb of our mother and be born again through the Heart of the Mother. And leaving home can be a very fearful process! As we examine the more esoteric dynamics of the “lunar landscape”, we will see how this process unfolds. Please remember that the nature of Soul unfoldment, i.e. the awakening of consciousness, is accomplished through synthesis, Thus we do not abandon our mother (nor any of our ancestors for that matter), we take the entire family with us as we journey to the Heart.

The nature of the Soul-centered, esoteric energies of the planets does not negate their personality-centered, exoteric meanings. A blending is taking place—one which gives rise to an ever-increasing inclusivity. It is the path to inclusivity which is also the Path to the Mother. The Soul-centered individual has neither forgotten nor abandoned the past nor is one forgetful of the responsibilities we have in our ordinary, daily life. The effects of the Moon and its sign placement, as we understand them to be from the angle of traditional, psychologically oriented astrology, are still valid. But there are other, more refined or highly evolved lunar influences which the Moon “veils”.

We can start our own voyage to the Moon by first examining ourselves. Where is the Moon placed in our horoscope? Where are we still attached to its influence as a storage place of past karmic imprinting? Where does the focus of our own attachment reside and most importantly, were is our resistance to its release? Once we enter the Path, we will be continuously confronted by such situations until we are able to break through the “lunar maya” which holds us enthralled in illusion. We struggle with the past, bringing our instinctual memory patterns to the surface of consciousness. The battle then ceases to be one of subjective, unfocussed inner, emotional turbulence. The battle becomes more objective and we face our own shadows as we set forth to break free into the higher life.

Esoteric astrology tells us that the Moon at this point is loosening its hold on our emotions. In its place another planetary force appears. This is the energy of Vulcan, esoteric ruler of the sign Taurus, and the planetary energy which helps us break free from the past. It is energy of Vulcan, now working through the position of the Moon in your horoscope, that severs these ties with your biological karma. A greater inclusivity begins to appear in your attitude towards life and those emotions connected to the instinctual nature of the personality are replaced by feelings and urges more in keeping with the loving will of the Soul. You have entered the battle for emotional freedom leading to our release from those compulsions and attachments which no longer serve our higher good.

The next step along the evolutionary road Home to the Mother involves the planet Uranus. After Vulcan (who as we may recall was the “Blacksmith of the Gods”) has forged those tools of greater awareness in his fiery oven (signified by our emotional battles!), we may now step forward with a greater sense of our individuality and a firm hand on our creative will. In this respect, Uranus begins to work through the position of the Moon in our horoscope. Uranus, the planetary revolutionary seeks to replace outworn ideas and doctrines with new concepts, thoughts, and structures, that permit our participation in the larger, collective life of humanity. Whenever we are actively engaged in service to humanity in general, we can be sure that our connection to the Soul is secured. This is one of the greatest blessings that Uranus may only reveal when acting through the Higher Self as the esoteric ruler of Libra.

Finally we come to that stage in life when the real “higher octave” of the Moon appears. This is Neptune, the bringer of the veil of emotional illusion on the personality level but the Initiator into the Mysteries of the Heart on the level of the Soul. Neptune is the Soul-centered ruler of the sign Cancer. When Neptune removes the lunar veil we stand before the Mother. Our lesson is complete. Whether we are a man or a woman in the present incarnation, we have learned how to nurture all and everyone. Our love is boundless, totally inclusive, and unconditional. We have come Home.

Let us now examine the position of the Moon from an esoteric perspective in each of the twelve signs and determine its Soul-Level Purpose:

Moon in Aries: Mercury, the esoteric ruler of Aries is on the same Ray of Manifestation as the Moon—the Fourth—and greatly influences the Moon when in this sign. In this case, Mercury helps to reorient the emotional nature of the Moon in this so that a greater contact is made possible to the mental body. Thus our feelings and emotions will become a better vehicle for “the birthplace of ideas”. Aries gives a fiery impulse to our emotional nature. From the level of the personality, this means that an individual is apt to be very impulsive in their self-expression, increasing the intensity of feelings into fiery outbursts of passion. On the Soul level, such fire is the fire of mind, allowing the person a much greater scope of creative self-expression.

Moon in Taurus: A very potent placement usually indicating a struggle between the creation of forms for one´s own pleasure and personal security or allowing oneself to be a vehicle for the collective well being of all. Abundance is the keyword to this position as the individual on the Path with the Moon in Taurus will lack nothing in the way of material substance, providing that the use of that substance is for the service of others. The Moon in Taurus need not worry about not having herself, but true happiness connected with material flow is only possible through the transcendence of personal desire. Vulcan is the ruler here and its First Ray energy brings out the Will-to-Good which can be expressed through the Law of Right Human Relationships, embodied by Venus, exoteric ruler of the Bull.

Moon in Gemini: This combination provides a tremendous potential for the communication of harmony and Right Human Relations through the written or spoken word. Venus is the esoteric ruler of the sign and joins with Mercury the ruler of Gemini on the personality level. Gemini is a Second Ray sign (Love/Wisdom) while Venus activates the Fifth Ray of the Concrete Mind (science and technology). The Soul-level purpose of this position is very much involved with the creating of patterns of relationship and communication which break down outworn models of social interchange so that new ways of relating may be brought forth for the greater good of humanity.

Moon in Cancer: On the personality level, this position indicates the strongest link a person may have to the past. It certainly allows an individual to be very nurturing but it does not necessarily provide an opportunity for evolutionary growth if the level of personal attachment to the familiar is too strong. On the esoteric level, Neptune emerges as a power of real opportunity as it is the Soul-centered ruler of this sign and is energetically connected with it. The Sixth Ray of Devotion acts through Neptune and combines with the Third (Active Intelligence) and Seventh (Synthesis, Order) Ray influences of Cancer. This allows the individual to create those environments that sustain a strong level of support for the collective. Such a person would be very willing to foster those social circumstances that serve to support any and all humanitarian efforts that nurture and sustain.

Moon in Leo: On the personality level, the Moon in this sign may birth an individual who is the epitome of emotional egocentricity. On a higher level of exoteric expression, this position can result in a highly gifted and abundantly creative person. The difficulty comes with one´s attachment to this gifts and the compulsion to be recognized for them. The test coming through Vulcan in this position will require the individual to reorient their fiery feelings and natural talents for the good of the collective, thus bringing in Leo´s opposite sign, Aquarius into play. Leo and Aquarius are both signs of the Fifth Ray, making this one of the easiest polarities to handle on esoteric levels. Thus the Moon in Leo gives one amble opportunity to invoke that great Fifth Ray lesson—the Law of Right Human Relationships—and the beautiful energies of the Fifth Ray planet, Venus.

Moon in Virgo: As the Moon is the esoteric ruler of this sign, its placement herein gives an individual a strong potential for world service work. The Soul-level purpose is to reveal the indwelling purpose within the various forms of life. This is of course, Love. The Virgin is the Holy Mother who births the Christ, symbol for the Soul of Humanity. The Second and Sixth Rays are very potent in this sign and lead to a deep sense of devotion to those life pursuits that evoke and increase consciousness. The effects of Vulcan when acting through the Moon in this sign would serve to break down patterns of selfishness and the manipulation of matter towards one´s own, personal ends.

Moon in Libra: This combination is very geared to the expansion of human relations from the more personal dynamics of Venus (exoteric ruler of the sign) into the more collective an impersonal realms of Uranus (esoteric ruler). The lunar focus for the creation of forms is centered on the harmonious blending of all human resources. Uranus, the Seventh Ray planetary expression is very much involved with the principle of synthesis. Thus when the Moon is in Libra and brings into play the energies of Uranus, the individual is very much oriented to the principle of “unity in diversity”. When this combines with the energies of Venus and Right Human Relations, we see that a Moon in Libra person can be very instrumental for the working out of many types of humanistic plans and projects.

Moon in Scorpio: Whenever a planet is in Scorpio there is always a sense of tension. Scorpio and the Moon are both connected to the Fourth Ray (Harmony Through Conflict). The Fourth stands as the transforming gate between the energies of the ego-self and the Soul. On the personality level, a person with the Moon is Scorpio is always required to transmute the energy of the lower emotions of selfish desires into a more refined feeling nature. The Moon is said to “fall “ in Scorpio as the nourishing qualities of the Moon are often severely restricted in this sign. But from the Soul-centered perspective, this “fall” relates to the death of the personality which is “felled” by the energies of the Soul. Thus the Soul-level purpose for this position is to use one´s outer, form life as a total expression for the healing properties and unifying qualities of the Higher Self. The tests are often severe (Scorpio is not a light-weight sign!), but the rewards are very lofty.

Moon in Sagittarius: The duality of this sign on the personality level often manifests as the struggle between personal desires and one´s more altruistic ideals. This duality is resolved esoterically when the Earth and the Third Ray dominate this position from the esoteric perspective, and one seeks to bring practical solutions to humanity’s needs. Idealism merges with realism, personal desires are geared for the release of people into a wider understanding of life. Once again the Fourth Ray is a very potent influence, yet the Moon in Sagittarius Soul-centered individual is ready to ride forth into the battle for the good of the collective. Vulcan´s work through the Moon in this sign involves the break down of the belief, so common to personality.centered Sagittarians, that their understanding of life represents universal truth. Once this humility is achieved, the Moon in Sagittarius may nurture through her wisdom.

Moon in Capricorn: The restrictive energy of Saturn, ruler of Capricorn lessons on the Soul level so that the individual, instead of feeling emotionally constrained, experiences the joy of true emotional responsibility. This means that the Soul-centered Moon in Capricorn person has come to the realization of where their real work resides. He or she may embrace this task as it has been well earned! The urge to control others (so very present with the Moon in Capricorn on the personality level) has given way to the awareness stated in this line from the Mantra of Unification: “Let the Soul Control the outer form and life and all events, and bring to life the love which underlies the happenings of the times.” The ability to structure the form side of life is then used by the person with the Moon in Capricorn in order to harness personal and collective resources for the benefit of group purposes.

Moon in Aquarius: From the level of personal emotions, this is not the warmest nor the most nourishing of lunar positions. It brings forth a tendency for a sense of impersonality which may not be necessarily very loving, just detached. Yet the quality of detachment is absolutely essential to the Soul-centered individual. Such coolness however does not indicate a lack of feeling nor the absence of love. On the contrary! Passion is replaced by compassion, self-absorption is transformed through absorption into the Self, and detachment from personal desires becomes a vehicle for world service. Uranus’ natural association with this sign allows it to function on the Soul level as an instrument for the invention of new processes of social interaction and communication so that the sense of the unity of humanity may be expressed to others. It should be remembered that Aquarius is a Fifth Ray sign and is thus intimately connected to Venus (Uranus is the esoteric ruler of Libra) and the Law of Right Human Relations.

Moon in Pisces: On the personality level, the mutable nature of this sign and the unstable quality of water may lead to an unending mutation of desire, thus perpetuating a life of hungering after something that can never be achieved. Yet this very same lack of fixity and the connection which Pisces has to the ocean of all human experience, makes it the sign with the easiest entry into the universal truth of love. The Fish function through the same two Rays (II and VI) as its polarity, Virgo. The First Ray quality of Vulcan when working through this matrix serves to harness the Will (Ray I) of the Pisces individual towards devotion (Ray VI) to the Plan of Love/Wisdom (Ray II). This occurs through the gradual release of Pisces from his or her attachments to the sensation of emotion on the personal level so that he or she may sense the Presence of the Soul. Once achieved, the First Ray will point to the Way Home.

Reiki can be easily integrated into many aspects of your daily life allowing you to benefit from the relaxing and healing properties of life force energy. In my article, Reiki - Woven Into the Spiritual Fabric of Your Life, I outlined simple Reiki Techniques to start your day, but when you get to work, there are many more opportunities to do Reiki:

Make a Reiki symbol card by drawing all the Reiki symbols to which you have been attuned on a piece of paper or a file card. I did this on my computer by drawing the symbols on paper and scanning into the computer. Then print the symbols on a business card and place it out of site around your work space. You can put one under your keyboard, in your file cabinet or on the back of your wall calendar.

Use Reiki symbols as passwords for online accounts, you will be typing them each time you login.

Place a mini Reiki crystal grid on your desk, at work, in a very attractive box. Keep a picture on your crystal grid at home so when you charge it, the one at work is also filled with Reiki energy.

Give your self Reiki during your work day, when appropriate. You can place your hand on your leg and give yourself Reiki often, if you have that intention.

Draw or place a Reiki symbol card in your checkbook. You can also take a copy of your bank and credit card statements and draw symbols on them or make a bundle out of them, place a Reiki symbol card in the bundle; placing it in a sacred spot in your home. We live in an infinite universe; it's natural for us to experience abundance, including financial abundance, in our lives. The more abundance we attract in to our own lives the more we raise the level of receiving for everyone. Let Reiki help you achieve your life's purpose.

Put Reiki symbols in your wallet.

Carry crystals and wear crystal jewelry charge with Reiki.

Be creative, you will be surprised how many ways you can be a channel for Reiki energy.

Draw symbols or place Reiki Symbol cards behind the pictures on your walls and the books on the shelves in your home.

If it is practical, draw symbols on your water filter. Mine has a symbol card and crystals charged with Reiki in the casing. You will notice the difference in the taste of the water and you will have a constant source of Reiki water.

Draw Reiki symbols on cedar blocks and place them around the room when you are doing Reiki or when you are sleeping. You can turn them face down if you don't want your clients to see them. Cedar is traditionally known as a sacred wood. You will feel the energy as you put them around the room before a Reiki session and the smell of the cedar will enhance the environment.

Place crystals charge with Reiki into the potted plants in and around your home. My plants began to flourish after receiving this wonderful healing energy of crystals and Reiki. Place photos of the crystals and the plants on your Reiki crystal grid.

When leaving my house, before I close the front door, I draw a Reiki symbol to leave in the house until I return. It isn't necessary to draw symbols, you can visualize them or even just think of them and the energy becomes activated.

If you are a Reiki master, give yourself attunements regularly. I do every Sunday morning as soon as I get up.

Here are a few more very effective techniques you can do almost anywhere:

In nearly every situation you can draw symbols and send Reiki with your eyes. It is said that your eyes are the window to your soul so when you use them to send Reiki, it is your soul that is purely channeling and sending Reiki and it is your soul which is also receiving the healing energy.

Intend to send Reiki. Think Reiki. When we think, our thoughts take form, so just by thinking Reiki you activate the Reiki energy in your brain and start the flow. When we receive attunements, symbols are placed in our head and our brain. The images of the Reiki symbols are stored there; so that without any other physical action we can think and send Reiki. It's our intention which is the driving force behind the energy and the movement to its destination. Reiki energy is like water flowing down in a bubbling stream; going where it is needed, following the path of least resistance.

When you shake hands with someone or hug someone give them Reiki. You can easily intend for Reiki to flow into your hands and allow the person with whom you are making contact to receive a touch of Reiki energy.

Be Reiki. Pick the Reiki symbol most appropriate for you at the time and imagine you are that Reiki symbol. Experience the energy of the symbol first hand. When you are done, send the symbol back to the universe and come back into your body.

When sending Reiki long distance, imagine the person or situation to which you are intending to send the Reiki small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, hold that imagine between your two hands and send Reiki. I feel very intense energy when I do this and have been told afterwards, by the people receiving, that they experienced very effective healing experiences.

The more Reiki you do, the better. Weave Reiki into the fabric of your life and you will notice it become richer and stronger. Activate the sacred and experience the divine.

Transiting Energies - Time to Express Yourself

You know what this current mix of transiting energies makes me think of? Taking what’s wild, and applying rules to it.

Venus in Aries is just coming off a conjunction with rebel Uranus, and heading into a square with expansive Jupiter in Cancer. Venus in Aries is a bit crazy. Charge after what you want. Flirt with an assertive edge. Draw a little blood. Uranus and Jupiter are punching up those Venus themes (love, money, self-esteem, beauty).

Get NOTICED.

But Jupiter is trining Saturn Rx in Scorpio. No matter how you slice it, Saturn is about rules. The limits of reality. To me, this feels like taking the crazy____ and focusing it. Taking what’s messy and putting some polish on it. Saturn Rx in Scorpio is not about convention, btw (not that kind of polish). It’s about reaching deeper, stretching further (so that you pull a muscle) and coming up with a meaningful focus. Going to where it aches, and finding the truth, and allowing those limits to add an edge to your creation. Or your directionless desire.

It’s great to have rampant passion, but you really get down to business when you focus that passion.

Chiron's Journey - Then and Now

Our attention has been on the cacophony of the Cardinal Cross of late, but another actor in the solar system has been playing a subtle role in drama of the skies.

The asteroid Chiron -- teacher, martyr, medicine man -- has been sextiling Pluto for much of the past three years.

Modern astrologers often assign Chiron's rulership to Virgo, the sign of service and healing, citing the centaur of myth, who was a healer and a teacher. This would fit with the actual astronomy. Chiron reaches 0° declination (the equivalent of the Sun at 0° Aries) every 20 years in either Virgo or Pisces. This is the polarity of the body and the spirit, the 12th and the 6th houses. Here Chiron's journey ends or begins.

Chiron has an erratic orbit, weaving between Saturn, Uranus and Mars. Because of this inconsistency, he spends much, much longer in some signs. So at the two extremes, he stays in Pisces for about nine years, and in Virgo for just over one. This certainly puts an emphasis on these signs for Chiron. Virgo is the sign of physical healing and Pisces of spiritual healing or, if things go wrong, the reverse, spiritual disintegration.

Currently Chiron is direct a 17° Pisces and will move just one degree further before turning retrograde on June 20°. If you have planets at this point or in mutables at 17°/18°, pay attention. Chiron has been in Pisces since 2010, and he leaves in 2018. He spends longer around the mid-degrees of the sign than at either end, so right now Chiron is moving very, very slowly. When a planet (or asteroid) does this, you have to ask yourself, is he trying to make a point?

Much has been written about Chiron, but astrologers often seem to want him to mean something even if that does not quite fit the facts.

From my experience with real charts, Chiron is definitely involved in both physical healing and physical wounding. Chiron is involved with pain and with medicine. It is common for people in the healing professions, alternative and orthodox, to have Chiron on the MC or ASC or in the 6th house. It is common for a Chiron transit to bring some kind of pain - physical, emotional or mental. For a personal story on the Chiron transits around my broken foot, click here – (although I'd add that my love affair with Solar Arcs ended soon after this post). Chiron can be Healing Wounder as well as a "Wounded Healer".

The last time Chiron was in Pisces was between 1960 and 1969, when he was in occasional opposition to Uranus and (widely) Pluto in Virgo. This was a decade when for some, drugs (Virgo) opened the doors of perception (Pisces). But Virgo is not just about medication but also about meticulous, daily practice and ritual, such as meditation or prayer. This was the decade when the hippie trail might lead to a sufi mystic in Morocco or a hare krishna ashram in Goa or a zen monastery in California. A place of religious retreat is ruled by Pisces.

It was also a decade when the modern environmental movement got started, thanks in part to the work of Rachel Carson and her seminal book Silent Spring, published in 1962. Environmentalism is, of course, connected to the earth signs, particularly Virgo and Taurus, those green-fingered gardeners. Uranus' entry into Virgo in the 1960s awakened us to the way many ways we were destroying the planet. For some, Chiron in Pisces connected this physical destruction to the spirit of Mother Earth as well as her body. James Loveolock began playing with ideas that became the Gaia Hypothesis in 1965. Although he may not consciously have wanted his theory to have a religious dimension, by using her name, he invokes her.

Piscean-style spirituality is, more than any other, about the immanence of the divine. Henry David Thoreau, the great-granddady of mystical environmentalism had Chiron in Pisces. And Chiron himself is half man-half beast; half-tame-half-wild, the product of a union between humans and wilderness.

If in personal charts and with personal transits Chiron often shows a wound or a wounding, how does pain work for the collective when Chiron is in Pisces? Two of the nastiest wars of the 20th century took place under Chiron in Pisces: WW1 and the Vietnam War, both of which were notable for the use of chemical weapons - poisoned gas being a Piscean murder weapon. Both wars would now probably be characterised as psychically wounding. The unresolved wound of WW1 led straight into WW2, when Chiron was racing through the opposite side of the Zodiac. Just to be precise: when war was declared in 1914, Chiron was at 17° Pisces; in 1939, he was at 17° Cancer (don't forget that Chiron moves very fast through these signs) in a perfect emotional trine aspect to the WW1 Chiron. By the end of WW2, that is VJ day, Chiron was at 17° Virgo back exactly opposite to where it had been at the start of the Great War. Astrology can be very neat.

Back to kinder themes, Chiron in Pisces helps open the path to numinous spirituality and spiritual environmentalism which in the 1960s linked to a Virgoan need for ritual and practice. But today the path will be different since the current long-term aspects Chiron has made this time around are a conjunction with Neptune in Pisces (now over) and a sextile with Pluto in Capricorn (ongoing) – both different from the opposition to Uranus that was a feature of the 1960s.

The asteroid Chiron was only discovered in 1976. So this is the first time that Chiron has transited through Pisces when we have known of his existence. We have a new Chiron-consciousness now. It is especially important for the generation born in the 1960s, who are having a Chiron Return that lasts far longer than most people's, but also for those with Chiron in Virgo – born in 1943/4/5 and 1993-1995 -- who are having the opposition for far longer than most people.

It will be easier with hindsight to trace the larger story of this decade of Chiron in Pisces, but it is certain that we are dealing with the potential for both the healing and wounding. Already one of the features of the suppression of the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Ukraine has been the unprecedentedly heavy use of tear gas. It's a little unnerving to see that Chiron is approaching 17° Pisces again, where he will station in June.

Principles of astrology

1. Life is short, Art long, Experience not easily obtained, Judgment difficult, and therefore it is necessary, that a Student not only exercise himself in considering several Figures, but also that he diligently read the writings of others who have treated rationally of this Science, and make it his business to find out the true natural causes of things by experiments, to know the certain places and processions of the Planets and Fixed Stars, Constellations, etc., but above all to be a passionate lover of truth.

2. The Principles of Art are three: Reason, Sense, and Experience, but the Principles of Operations four, viz.: The Planets, The Parts of Heaven, The Fixed Stars, and the Site or Position of all those in respect of one another.

3. There are some things perfectly known, as the Circle of Ascension; some in a competent measure, as the Revolution of the Sun; some may be known although they yet are not, as the Revolution of the Superiors; some things fall under knowledge, yet cannot be exactly known, as the precise Ingress of the Sun into the Equinoctial point; some are neither known, nor can be known, as the complete commixtures and distinct virtues of the Stars.

4. It is much worse for an Artist to conceive he knows those things which he is ignorant of, than to be ignorant of those thing which he ought to know.

5. Mean learning with an excellent judgement, avails more than a mean judgement with the greatest learning, yet is judgement with the greatest learning, yet is judgement very much assisted and perfected by learning; but everything prospers better, and is far more easily perfected that has nature for its guide and favourable stars, than that which is attempted by human industry though never so diligent.

6. He that has too great a conceit of himself will be apt to fall into many errors in his judgement; yet on the other side, he that is too diffident, is not fit for this Science.

7. He that would truly promote Art must insist as much on the confutation of false opinions delivered by others, as in the declaration or truth.

An Astrologer is so far only true and honest, as he depends in his conjectures on principles of natural philosophy, and since those Arts which are inherent in their proper subjects, cannot promise any certainty concerning matters to come, the Astrologer ought never to pronounce anything absolutely or peremptorily of future contingencies.

9. Truths of themselves are to be desired, for Science itself is a certain good, now the expectation of future good very much delight us, and on the contrary, when future evils are foreseen, we may either avoid them, mitigate them, or at least bear them more contentedly.

10. Heaven is the instrument of the most High God, whereby he acts upon, and governs inferior things.

11. He that asserts things that can never be proved by experience is deceived and ambitious, but thus it always happens, those that are most ignorant of Art delights to boast of doing things different or wonderful.

12. It is all one as to promoting of Art, etc., and the knowledge thereof, either from nativities known, to predict what shall happen, or after accidents have happened, to discover the Nativities before unknown which are thereby rectified, but as to vulgar opinion, the first way far exceeds the last.

13. He that goes about to destroy Art, is far worse than he that is unskilled in it, for his mind is full of malice and idleness as well as ignorance.

14. Men may be said almost to be compelled by the Stars, even in voluntary actions, by means of their corrupt affections and ignorance.

15. Always deliver judgements from the Stars in general terms, or if thou dost otherwise let it be when thou hast very evident testimonies and in great and weighty matters.

16. We ought not to use arguments or tedious discourses in giving judgement, much less flatteries, but only to pronounce what is known by experience and firm reason.

17. A main reason why events are so rarely foretold by Astrologers, is because the Art is yet but imperfectly discovered, for hitherto those that have been most excellent in it, being commonly old persons, have despaired to live to see the fortunes of children newly-born, and the Nativities of persons grown up, being uncertain, they scarce thought them worth so much labour.

18. When true genitures exactly taken in accidents prove false or absurd, and not agreeable to the things signifies, they are to be accounted monstrous, and are to be avoided as anatomists do monstrous bodies in their dissections; for they overthrow Art.

19. Generals are to be gathered from Singulars, and Singulars from Generals, and an Artist ought always to learn to distinguish between that which is by itself, and that which is only by accident.

20. The strength and efficacy of Fixed Stars is to be considered from their magnitude, their splendours, their natures or properties, their nearness to the Ecliptic, their place in the World, their multitude, their first oriental appearance, the purity of their place, the similitude or agreement of the body or rays of a Planet with them and their circle of position.

21. The Light of the Time is the Sun in the day, and morning twilight; and the Moon in the night when she is above the Earth, and in her morning rising; so that sometimes their may be two Lights of Time, sometimes it so happens that there is none.

22. When a Planet is within five degrees of the cusp of any house, it shall be accounted to have virtue in that house though actually posited behind the cusp in another house.

23. Not only Trines and Sextiles may be counted friendly aspects, but even Squares and Oppositions too, if there happen a Reception.

Rao voice, words, photo and video just makes a true astrology wanting to come out from within you. He makes astrology fun and something to care about. He makes you want to ponder into the past of ancient India and those hidden gems who still luck in a small village and gully of India. He simply clears out all doubts.

Jaimini astrology is another major branch of Prashara astrology which was lost for 3000 years and was only revived in the 20th century by gurus like Sri Sri K.N. Rao who is considered the best Vedic astrology in the world including the best Jaimini astrologer in the world; but this science never gained as much attention as regular Vedic Astrology until recent years. Sri Rao accounts his understanding and introduction to Jamini astrology through a hidden gem known as "Vemuri Rama Murthy" in Andhra Pradesh, which is described in his book "Jaimini's Chara dasha". One important fact to remember is that planets really become active in Jaimini when their sign based dasha becomes active, but in any chara dasha they will give their results based on how far they are from the sign dasha.

In Jamini astrology sign aspect other signs. Planets do not have aspects. But if a planet is sitting in a certain sign, that planet, too, will aspect all the houses that the sign is looking towards. In such a method a planet will have multiple aspects combining Prashara and Jamini together. If Saturn has 3 aspects in Prashara then in Jamini it may have additional 3. This is why in one single mahadasha Saturn can put delay on many things but no matter what mahadasha you are running, there will always be some "Chara dasha" running simultaneously with Vimshotri dasha. If Mahadasha of Saturn is running while the chara dasha of the sign where Saturn is placed that's when Saturn will began to aspect all the other respective houses.

These are some of the basic fundamentals of Jamini, but Jamini is like an iceberg, it looks simple from the top, but there is a huge cathedral of information within. If it wasn't for the countless hours of dedication of Sri K.N. Rao towards unfolding the mysteries of Jamini, we would be walking blindly in the vast maze of Jyotish. Astrology: The Major Aspects

The Conjunction: Planets and points that form a conjunction are energies that are united. They are blended; therefore, they act together. The closer they are to conjunction, the more subjective these combined energies are. They don't stand alone, and they have a difficult time truly acknowledging each other as distinct or separate. In effect, conjunctions can be a blind spot. When the Sun is in close conjunction to Neptune, for example, others may note the distinction, but it can be hard for the native to distinguish between their sense of individuality and their spiritual, evasive, or roundabout nature. The native may just assume, naturally, that others are much the same way.

The Sextile: The sextile is often read quite like a trine, although there is a distinction between the two aspects. Sextiles, like trines, point to some talent and ease. However, sextiles have a little more "oomph" to them. While trines come so naturally to people that they might have to be reminded of their own talents or tendencies, sextiles are a little more overt to the native. These are the talents that people appreciate in themselves. They may be more inclined to notice and work on these talents. Sextiles are communicative and relationship-friendly aspects. They point to energies that are capable of being directed. Sextiles reveal the potential for intelligent use of the energies.

The Square: This aspect creates tension between the planets and points involved. Tension is necessary in order to stimulate action, but too much tension translates to stress. The planets involved in a square are acting at cross purposes. With squares, we may overdo and run into countless obstacles before we "get it right". However, squares force us out of complacency and get the ball rolling. Squares are often more difficult when we are young, as these aspects force us to grow and learn our lessons.

The Trine: Planets in trine support each other. Trines, by nature, are accepting. They allow us to accept others, ourselves, and situations. The talents that trines offer a native are so natural that they are almost unconscious. Often enough, natives don't truly appreciate the talents these trines offer them, and they may not try to develop them. However, these talents are second nature and completely natural. So, for example, if a man has Venus trine Neptune, he may be poetic, romantic, or artistic, and he may easily accept his romantic partner for who he/she is. Another man with Venus square Neptune may have similar qualities, and may possess a strong desire to accept his partner blindly, but doing so is not as natural as the first man. He has to work on it, and might come up against difficult situations in which he feels duped or abused by his partners as a result of that acceptance.

The Opposition: "It takes two" is the expression, and the opposition is created by dividing the circle by 2. Therein lies the key to the meaning of this aspect: relationship. People with oppositions seek out others, as if to mirror their own internal struggles. They learn about themselves through interactions with others. Very often, oppositions cause us to swing from one side to the other and we feel torn. Oppositions represent a state of divided loyalties. Inner discontent, uncertainty, and insecurity can be a result. While a square is urgent and courageous, an opposition is unsure and wavering. When we use our oppositions correctly, we are more willing to consider the other side and we can be adept negotiators.

Difference between sextiles and trines: Both aspects show us planet "buddies" who get along. But the trine buddies may take each other for granted even though they derive pleasure from each other, while the sextile buddies remain separate somehow, and when they cooperate with each other they fully appreciate their "friendship". The expression of the trine is very natural and automatic, while the energies created with the sextile are things that can be drawn upon if need be. With trines, the energies tend to flow naturally into constructive channels, and with sextiles, a conscious effort is required to push the energies into constructive channels.

Difference between oppositions and squares: Squares create the kind of tension that demands action. Oppositions also create tension, but natives generally seek out others in relationships in order to work out that tension! Note that planets in opposition generally occur with compatible sign elements, while squares generally occur between signs that are considered incompatible by element.

Predominant aspects in a chart: conjunctions - focused people, derive their motivation from within; with not enough oppositions, hard to see the other side, easy to lose perspective. sextiles - communicative, creative, expressive.squares - crisis-oriented people, action-oriented, motivated, willing to tackle obstacles, don't blindly accept things, energetic, strength of character and will.trines - unchallenged, talented, accepting, comfortable, complacent. oppositions- contradictory, seek balance in their lives usually through relationships, insightful, they look for meaning in life, inclined to project qualities onto others, unfocused, greater capacity for objectivity, seek growth through relationships.

Lack of aspects in a chart: conjunctions - scattered, don't look within for answers, flexible. sextiles - inclined to avoid creative pursuits, are less self-expressive and communicative. squares - lack motivation, take the easy way out, avoid confrontations, unchallenged, habitual people. trines - not as balanced people, conflict-oriented, driven. oppositions - subjective, don't need partners to mirror themselves, self-contented, not as concerned about growing through relationships or broadening their own perspective, self-reliant.

An Exercise in Self-Awareness

The closer the aspect, the more unconscious and habitual it is likely to be. Interestingly, I have found that we tend to identify more with aspects with wider orbs. Aspects with larger orbs are usually dynamics of our personalities that are most obvious to us, while others in our lives may notice the energies of our closer aspects more than we do. This is because close aspects are very subjective and habitual. They are so much a part of us that we may not pay much attention to the personality dynamics that they represent. With experience and increased self-awareness (as well as feedback from others), we come more in touch with these instinctive facets of our personalities. Of course, astrology can help us better understand these dynamics.

As students of astrology, once we have reached the point where we have "proved" to ourselves that astrology works, the following exercise can be extremely rewarding and insightful. Stop to think about each aspect in your chart and accept that it is part of you. Abandon the idea that any one aspect is more powerful than another, just for the duration of this exercise. Allow yourself to accept that each aspect you see in your chart is a valid energy in your life.

The basis of this exercise is acceptance. In our early studies of astrology, we tend to pick and choose which aspects and positions in our charts are "most like" us. We think in such terms as, "Oh, this is ME!", "This aspect is kind of like me", and, "This is not really me". This is a natural process, as we are still attempting to prove that astrology works (or doesn't work). As well, we are not yet open to the fact that although we live with ourselves every moment, we do not know ourselves all that well!

By picking and choosing which aspects and positions jive with our images of ourselves, we miss out on the insight that is astrology's gift. Each and every aspect in our chart—whether it's tight or wide, angular or not—is ours. By accepting this concept, we serve to gain tremendous insight into our personalities. We increase our awareness and our mindfulness.

Concepts of smithcraft are connected to stories concerning the creation of the world, utilizing all of the Elements to create and fuse a new shape."

Creative Heat

The ardor of fire sign Aries finds its way in friendships and artistic goings-on, too. As things heat up, there is risk -- what "shape" will it take next?
