The Listening Ear Crisis Intervention Center of East Lansing/Lansing is pleased to announce that dates have been set for Summer 2012 New Volunteer Training program.

In order to be considered for the Training program, you will need to attend one of the orientation sessions below, even if you have previously attended one in the past. There, you will have an opportunity to fill out an application, learn about The Listening Ear, receive information about Training, and participate in a small group session. Each orientation takes approximately two hours.*

ORIENTATIONS:

Sunday, June 3^rd from 1 pm-3 pm @ The Listening Ear, 2504 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing

Monday, June 11^th from 7-9 pm @ C-Wing Wells Hall, MSU (room will be posted)

Thursday, June 14^th from 7-9 pm @ C-Wing Wells Hall, MSU (room will be posted)

Saturday, June 30^th from 11 am-1 pm @ The Listening Ear, 2504 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing

After all the Orientations are completed, you will be notified whether you have been selected for the Training program. Training will take place on July 12th -15th and July 18th -22nd, evenings and weekends; a more detailed Training schedule will be provided at Orientation.

The Ear's Training program is renowned as one of the most effective for teaching empathy, crisis intervention, and active listening skills; many other agencies in the Lansing area and across the country have used it as a template for their own training. The 65+-hour program consists of lectures, exercises, small group interactions, and role plays, designed to ensure you acquire the skills to handle a vast array of crisis situations. There will be personal rewards as well; volunteers frequently describe the Training program as a powerful life-changing event!

The Listening Ear is the oldest all-volunteer crisis center operating in the United States, open 24x7 since July 15, 1969. The Ear provides free and confidential service for phone and walk-in clients on the topics of suicide, depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, stress, and many others. In addition, the Ear's Sexual Assault Counseling staff is recognized as leaders in the Capitol Area in providing short-term counseling, advocacy and community education to survivors and significant others. The Ear serves more than 17,000 clients a year and is locally and nationally esteemed, having received the 113th "Point of Light Award" from President George H. W. Bush in 1990, and East Lansing's "Crystal Award" in 2003.

FY 2012/2013 Budget Hearing Schedule

The Lansing School District Board of Education has been dealing with many issues since the first of the year.  The Board has held three of four public meetings to discuss the restructuring of district.  The fourth meeting will be held on February 23, 2012, Thursday, at Reo Elementary School at 6:00 p.m.

 In leading the District into the future the Board will be making a decision on a new Superintendent and they are asking for your help.  Attached is a survey link where you can give your opinion on the type of person you want to see fill this critical role for the District.

Karla Swift, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO, spoke before the Ingham County Democratic Business and Professional Club Monday February 13, 2012.  President Swift spoke on a variety of issues including “Michigan’s 2012 Jobs Plan” which was unveiled on January 12, 2012.  This plan will hold legislators accountable for creating good-paying jobs, rebuilding the state’s crumbling infrastructure, making sure all of Michigan’s children have access to a good education, and helping unemployed workers get back on their feet.  This document, entitled “Michigan’s 2012 Jobs Plan,” provides a roadmap for rebuilding the state’s economy by investing in Michigan’s workers, families, and communities.

During the hour presentation President Swift also talked about the nonpartisan “Economic Policy Institute ‘Right to Work’ Report”, and the impact on workers and jobs in Michigan.

Attached is a copy of the report given by the LSD Administration concerning the restructuring of schools within the district.  The Administration’s recommendation is a two phased approach spanning two years.

 The first year 2012 -2013 would:

  • Reconfigure Otto Middle School to 4-8 school
  • Reconfigure Pattengill Middle to 4-8 IB school
  • Maintain Gardner as a 6-8 middle school
  • Relocate the Insights from Pattengill to Stem (Dwight Rich) K-8 building and lift/increase enrollment Cap at Stem K-8 to at least 800 students
  • Reconfigure Post Oak as PK-3 IB school
  • Reconfigure Cumberland, Gier Park, & Sheridan Road to PK-3 schools
  • Close Willow & Reo Elementary Schools—see if we are able to develop alternative uses for these building

 Second year 2013-2014

  • Reconfigure Gardner Middle School 7-8
  • Reconfigure Attwood, Cavanaugh, Kendon, Lyons, Forest View, Lewton & Averill to PK-3 schools
  • Reconfigure Elmhurst, Mt. Hope & North as 4-6 schools
  • Reconfigure Riddle to PK-6 school
  • Potential closing of another elementary building—decision needs to be made between October/November 2012 (unnamed school)
  • Potential reconfiguring and/or consolidating High School (9-12) students the closing of a High School—decision needs to be made between October/November 2012  (unnamed school)

The School Board is studying the proposed recommendations and intends to hold approximately four public meetings throughout the City to receive input from the community.

You can direct a 'person in need' of resources to call '2-1-1' and they will talk with a real receptionist. It is similar to calling 911; but it's for resources. This is a free to use service, paid for by our taxes. The 211 receptionist will share any and all resources available in your community and/or throughout the state. There is a story in the 'October update' of a 211 agent helping a 'person in need' to help fix his roof. The 211 agent actually got a contractor to donate their time to help fix this disabled couple's roof. How great is that? I know there are many agencies that help people in need, but I was really impressed with this 211 agent.

In the 211 report, information is broken down by county. The report indicates how many people called and what services were being requested. You can see if the needs in the county are increasing or decreasing month to month and in what way.

The CARE Program is seeking volunteers!

 

The Capital Area Response Effort (CARE) is a post-arrest response team for survivors of domestic violence. The CARE staff and volunteers offer crisis intervention and community resources to those who have experienced a domestic assault in Lansing, Lansing Township, Meridian Township, East Lansing and on the campus of Michigan State University. Volunteers always go out on calls in pairs, after an assailant has been arrested.

 

The next training will be held the weekend of January 12-15, 2012.

 

The choices for on call shifts are:

Thursday from 5:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.

Friday from 5:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.

Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

 

 

What does CARE have to offer you?

The CARE Program has many opportunities for volunteers. You can:

 

  • Become more involved in your community
  • Learn or enhance your crisis intervention techniques
  • Build your knowledge of the legal system and other community resources
  • Take a stand against domestic violence

 

Am I what CARE needs?

CARE volunteers are a diverse group of people with some key characteristics. A volunteer would tend to describe themselves as a people person, a good listener, a team player, reliable, and as someone who is interested in social justice. 

 

What is expected of a volunteer?

In addition to being on call a minimum of one to two times every six weeks, volunteers are expected to:

 

  • Complete a volunteer application
  • Provide two references
  • Participate in a short interview
  • Have an insured and reliable vehicle
  • Agree to a review of criminal history and driving records
  • Complete four days of training
  • Attend four in-service meetings per year
